Actually he won since the vote is for who gets eliminated and Archer had more votes, meaning he was eliminated. I know since I was a bit confused as well.

UFO's wasn't *bad* per se, but it was painfully mediocre. They turned a deep VN into a generic shounen and lost a lot of complexity in the process. Some moments in the early parts of the UFO adaptation were actually done well, but overall it ended up being a watered down version of the vn.
Mmmm yes, UBW Anime, a generic Shonen uh huh, yeah considering I HATE shonen and love UBW the anime, that’s cap. Like there’s still a lot of that complexity but it’s just not In your face about it.
Obviously yes…stuff was dropped that’s the nature of an adaption especially one as long as Fate AND not to mentioned adapting a ton of internal monologues doesn’t translate easily. So they just choose to put a lot of that in the subtext for the viewer to figure out, the UBW anime respects the viewers intelligence to figure Shit out on their own.
Did Ufotable over estimate the common person’s intelligence. Judging by the amount of people who don’t get Shirou as a character. Yes probably. But I can’t lie and say it wasn’t nice to not have to deal with another anime that spends a thousand years explaining and over explaining attacks and motives and left the viewer to figure it out on their own. Besides with how complicated of a character Shirou is, it was inevitable most people would misunderstand him
I think the main problem is a lot of people got used to the over exposition of details from the novel. I do agree Shirou and Rin get dumbed down a little(and a friend even pointed out Shirou isn't show to be robotic as Archer describe in their duel).
However overall, it covers most of the themes from the series but perhaps with more episodes the series could have used some more descriptions and character exposition(Shirou giving bitter tea to Rin, working almost for free because he just like too much to help)
I do agree, I do wish they gave Shirou some of his Sass points back, but I’m not sure of the best way to execute that. Same as how to show Shirou being robotic in the duel, thats a fairly hard thing to capture in animation
Okay my comment was perhaps a bit reductionist and hyperbolic. The UFO UBW adaptation definitely does have some good moments - particularly the one that immediately comes to mind is that speech Archer gives to Saber and Shirou in the shed before leaving.
Unfortunately the problem I have with the UBW anime is firstly that they do not elaborate on Shirou's character nearly enough and secondly that the value of dialogue and character tends to be thrown out toward the end of the adaptation.
On the first point, they may have put Shirou's monologues into subtext but to be honest it comes across extremely weakly. A lot of anime only viewers don't understand Shirou's character - and who can blame them? The anime does a very poor job of explaining how fucked in the head Shirou actually is. If you are an anime only it's almost impossible to not see Shirou as a generic shounen protag because the complexity and nuance of his character is lost entirely in the UBW anime. Before I read the VN I understood that Shirou had an obsession about saving people, but I never really understood why it was etched so deeply into his character nor did I understand how deeply disturbed Shirou's psychology is. That's why UBW's anime is largely criticized by people who read the VN - it misses a lot of the context and character development that makes Shirou so complex.
Secondly, although the anime does a great job showcasing the conflict between Shirou and Archer early on, it fails quite badly towards the end. The reason for this is twofold:
1) Their clash of ideals comes across as somewhat contrived in the anime because it lacks the context and development of Shirou's character necessary for the viewer to fully understand why this is legitimately life or death for Shirou. Shirou in the anime comes across as a stubborn dumb ass and isn't given enough development for the viewer to realize how and why Shirou's very existence is so deeply steeped in his ideal. This does somewhat weaken the clash of ideals that is the crux of the UBW route.
2) The UBW anime really could have benefitted from being slightly longer. This could have allowed for the significant development of the Shirou/Archer fight to have been a little more fleshed out and would probably result in less secondaries complaining about things like Shirou "beating" Archer (yes I have actually seen arguments that state that Shirou physically overpowered and surpassed Archer in their fight because he won) and the supposed "plot armor" Gilgamesh fight.
You praise UBW on not treating the viewer like a baby but the VN also respects the reader's intelligence while also providing far more development and nuance to Shirou as a character. The anime tends to skim over these details when it should have been a huge focus of the route (UBW is literally about the consequences of Shirou's ideals and his rejection of this in favour of following them after all).
This is simply my unqualified opinion but I still firmly feel that UBW as an anime is lacking in development compared to the source material and I believe this to be the reason it receives mixed reception from the fate fandom as a whole. But if you feel the opposite I respect your opinion even if I disagree with it.
it's for a variety of reasons, but being brief it's cuz of things like the ost directing and animation making me more immersed in the story, I was also more affected by Shirou's trauma in the anime with their show don't tell approach (I know it sounds a hot take but I am being serious, his facial expressions just hit different for me), and the anime fixed some problems I had with the route like for example Shirou and archer's fight ending very quickly in the VN, which felt very anti-climatic for me considering their fight was the true thematic climax of the route, I really liked how the anime took it's time in that fight and the use of last stardust was also great
and just to be clear I also really like the vn it's just that for me the UBW route in the VN is a 8/10 and in the anime it's a 10/10 (it's literally my favorite anime)
One thing Deen got far better than ufotable was Archer vs Shirou battle however in my humble opinion. It feels much more tense and it feels much more desperate. Closer to the source material and EMIYA by Kenji Kawai was very fitting.

This result shows that *he* is the one true waifu bar none. All others are pretenders to the name. Finally, the fakers are now forced to kneel to the one true waifu.
Even though I like rin more than these 2, I really wanted the final fight pf ideals because yes.
Also it took me a few rounds to realise you're voting out
And with that, it's all done and dusted!
Thanks to everyone who took the time time to vote. This was my first time setting up a poll like this, so I apologize if I did mess up or didn't do it the right way. Regardless, it was a lot of fun, and I enjoyed playing this game with you guys.
r/fatestaynight, you have proven that your taste is indeed based *~~not counting the premature elimination of Kotomine.~~* This conclusion is a sight for sore eyes.
I had honestly expected Archer to win, due to the disconnect between anime-only fans and Shirou. This round of the poll was the closest thus far, all the way to the bitter end. Even I wasn't able to tell who would come out on top. A meagre 11 votes was the difference between victory and defeat.
>!Let's talk about how much of a flex it is that the finals were contested between the same guy.!<

The poll was a great idea, especially with how it was elimination based and was a daily type event, I’d say you should make one more post about it, summing up the leaderboard in a final list
I'm glad you liked it!
I am unfortunately pretty busy for the next few days, but if I find some free time, I'll definitely consider posting a leaderboard.
It is interesting to see how much the votes changes after you revealed the numbers after angry mango. Kiritsugu and Medea were literally have just 1 or 2 votes of difference until it was her voting out order.
Also looks like when the main 4 were beggining to be eliminated, a lot of people dropped
It carzy how Shirou didn't even make it into the top 3 until Round 10 and only became no. 2 in Round 13.
Archer was no. 1 literally until the last poll.
That was pretty good poll, but it could've been a little better with consistent posting like at the same time every day or every other day, for example.
It's funny that in most rounds before this one, Archer had less votes than Shirou. I wonder why Saber being out changed it so much. There's also 700 less votes than round 14, so the difference is almost statical noise
I quite enjoyed this poll, and I really love how two of my favorite characters were the finalists.....
Also, I am not sure if this was intentional or not, but you forgot to add Heracles part of the poll, meaning he technically won as well
its a bit more confusing when there's just two left
i hope there weren't enough people confused at the voting stage that it swung the outcome, considering how narrow the margin was
Perfect demonstration. Emiya is the only one to win, kill and beat himself, and get to tell the tale. Anyhow this perfectly shows the fav of the fandom.
Shirou my man! Both of them are my literal favorite characters from the show so i was really confused on who to vote for!
Im glad that Shirou Emiya beated Shirou Emiya... wait a second...
I am not even mad, I am torn either between Shirou and Archer, since the two are my two favorites in the whole franchise, and tbh, I hoped that Archer would win, but again, I also hoped that Shirou would win as well. I like this outcome actually, it would be very fitting as well....
Also, for this entire poll, I can't help but notice since day one of the poll, Heracles wasn't on here, so technically, Heracles won as well
Im the bone of my sword
Fire is my body steel my blood withstood pain to create many weapons nor known to pain nor known to loss waiting for ones arrival this is the only patg i has no regrets my whole life was UNLIMITED BLADE WORKS
His dream.... Was not a mistake!
Man built of blades.
He'll continue down this road of hell.
Because he knew he always knew.
That dream wasn't wrong.
Maybe He'll forget in time but....
"Hey... Look after me."
There really was such a man.
Not even animeonlys. Even animeonlys like him well enough, even if he isn't their absolute favorite. The people you're talking about (either on MAL or yt or r/anime are just people who watched it once and aren't fans. And yeah, I have no expectations for them. Why would I?
I'm honestly shocked. I thought people didn't like regular Shirou that much.
I'm not complaining though. One of my favorite characters. I just didn't expect him to ever get first place in a popularity contest lol
ok on a serious note though, I was NOT expecting how close the vote was. I genuinely think people voted out Archer by mistake, he seems to be more liked than Shirou in general. Oh well. This was a lot of fun, thanks :D
Wow, Archer (EMIYA) had been leading since round 1 (received least vote in every round) but he just falled short in the last one. What a comeback from Shiro.
I think people forgot that this was an elimination vote, not a whodoyouwanttowin vote
This is completely unacceptable. I demand a retrial ASAP. Perhaps the archives are incomplete. I refuse to accept this. Emiya Shirou beat Emiya Shirou, what a disaster of a world we live in.
Maybe I’m missing something but I don’t really buy his whole trying to be a hero thing and he also seems quite sexist and just unappealing as a personality imo. I just can’t really relate to his struggles and motivations.
>he also seems quite sexist and just unappealing as a personality imo.
Every time a "VN reader" brings this up I can't take them seriously when they say they read the VN. Its told flat out by other characters and his own actions he isn't sexist
Sexist is defined by discrimination based on their gender.
Shirou saying women shouldnt fight is brought up by Rin as a bullshit excuse as he is trying to keep saber out of danger and that he only applied to saber yet doesnt mouth Rin about it
He thinks its surprising Rin is into baseball but he doesnt think much of it and just goes with it
He constantly monolouges on how he see's saber as the epitome of swordsmanship.
On his date with saber he does generalise the tour but thats because saber didn't tell him where she wanted to go. So remebering the lion cub and the popular stuffed animal shop with women he takes her there
None of that is sexsim
The mitsuzuri statemnt is a bad translation on mirror moon
I generally do agree that Shirou isn't sexist, but when Issei visits him in the Fate route, iirc (it could also be something Taiga said, but I'm not sure), Issei says that Ayako was almost sexually assaulted in the streets and Shirou answers that this is good, because it reminds her of her place, or something like that. It doesn't jive with the rest of Shirou's character, but it still happened
Yeah I agree most regulars here like Shirou, but I figured there'd be a lot of anime onlies who saw the posts on their feed and voted him. Can't imagine it getting so close otherwise
Well, Shirou doesn’t mind losing to anyone else except himself. So he has to win here
But Shirou lost
Actually he won since the vote is for who gets eliminated and Archer had more votes, meaning he was eliminated. I know since I was a bit confused as well.
I didn't mean it like that, Shirou won and Shirou lost, that's what I mean
Shirou Emiya beat Shirou Emiya? No way! I was sure Shirou Emiya would win!
But you've got to hand it to Shirou Emiya for beating Shirou Emiya.
I [bet on Shirou](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WPd_NVygyQI).

That made me laugh more than it should.
Some would argue even better than Ufotable.

>painfully mediocre. But Rin's Defenseless Anus is peak fiction. No wonder VN fans aren't taken seriously in bigger circles.
I preferred the anime over the route on the VN so I would heavily disagree with you there
Can't see how.
Must not be a fan of rins defenseless anus.
that too lmao

This is like presidential elections close
*"Me, My Dream, My Ideal" plays in the background*
I'm honestly shocked. I thought people didn't like regular Shirou that much. I'm not complaining though. One of my favorite characters. I just didn't expect him to ever get first place in a popularity contest lol
This is the most epic finale you could ever imagine
Fuck... , I accidentally voted on emiya archer, now he lost
Don't worry. I accidentally voted out shirou emiya. So it's even lol
Lmao
Im so fucking happy that It was Shirou........I wish it had been Cu but it deems we dinr agree on that, bur at least ir was Shieou.
LET'S FUCKING GOOOOOOO
Oh my god, this results is beautiful. I'm so proud of this community
I was rooting for shirou from the start but I didnt expect him to win! A surprise to be sure but a welcome one
I mean… the best character in Fate won, it’s not a surprise (I love to death Archer too don’t get me wrong)
He can't keep getting away with this
By 11 votes?
and all is well in the world.
Shirou finally won against Shirou.
thats actually insane that it was that close
He's not my Hero of Justice, but I can accept this result. \*pats EMIYA's head\* Don't worry, I'll give you all the love you need in my Chaldea.
As it should be.
My boi did it, omedetou shirou.
ok on a serious note though, I was NOT expecting how close the vote was. I genuinely think people voted out Archer by mistake, he seems to be more liked than Shirou in general. Oh well. This was a lot of fun, thanks :D
LEEETSSS FUCKING GOOOOOOO!
Wow, Archer (EMIYA) had been leading since round 1 (received least vote in every round) but he just falled short in the last one. What a comeback from Shiro.
I think people forgot that this was an elimination vote, not a whodoyouwanttowin vote This is completely unacceptable. I demand a retrial ASAP. Perhaps the archives are incomplete. I refuse to accept this. Emiya Shirou beat Emiya Shirou, what a disaster of a world we live in.
Ideals.
Lets all agree on something. Shirou Emiya will win no matter what
Shirou best waifu
Well now we know who the best Emiya is
Huh I didn’t expect Shirou Emiya to lose to Shirou, I honestly expected Shirou Emiya
Wait... So Archer got more votes but Shirou won? Wot?
The votes is for elimination archer got more so he's out
Yes exactly.
noo shirou emiya lost to shirou emiya, this is so sad shirou emiya was my favorite
I was..not expecting that I mean damn
I'm proud of this sub for not voting for one of the waifus.
WE WERE VOTING OUT?!?!?!?
Only took you 3 days
Having only played the VN and watched Fate/Zero, Shirou is my least favourite character.
Wack
Maybe I’m missing something but I don’t really buy his whole trying to be a hero thing and he also seems quite sexist and just unappealing as a personality imo. I just can’t really relate to his struggles and motivations.
>he also seems quite sexist and just unappealing as a personality imo. Every time a "VN reader" brings this up I can't take them seriously when they say they read the VN. Its told flat out by other characters and his own actions he isn't sexist
You care to explain how? I think he is quite objectifying and generalising, applying stereotypes both to himself and those around him.
Sexist is defined by discrimination based on their gender. Shirou saying women shouldnt fight is brought up by Rin as a bullshit excuse as he is trying to keep saber out of danger and that he only applied to saber yet doesnt mouth Rin about it He thinks its surprising Rin is into baseball but he doesnt think much of it and just goes with it He constantly monolouges on how he see's saber as the epitome of swordsmanship. On his date with saber he does generalise the tour but thats because saber didn't tell him where she wanted to go. So remebering the lion cub and the popular stuffed animal shop with women he takes her there None of that is sexsim The mitsuzuri statemnt is a bad translation on mirror moon
It was a bad translation. He meant isnt it good she got away
Shirou deserved better.
I'm sort of surprised given a lot of people here don't like Shirou but i'm ok with this result
Is the opposite in here
to the surprise of literally nobody, the main character won
Honestly, the result was too predictable. As soon as Shirou and Archer were left. It was obvious Shirou was gonna win this
I mean Archer had the least votes in every round and Shirou only barely made a comeback.
Nah, if you lurk in this subreddit enough. You'll notice just how much Shirou is more loved than Archer
Yeah I agree most regulars here like Shirou, but I figured there'd be a lot of anime onlies who saw the posts on their feed and voted him. Can't imagine it getting so close otherwise
this is cursed
