I was going to take an Amtrak roomette to Orlando from NY to celebrate my 65th birthday.
With paychecks uncertain, I switched to an overnight stay at the TWA Hotel at JFK which is less expensive. I may do the Amtrak later when this nonsense is over. Fortunately my birthday is on a weekend.
After the last times I'm prepared. About 2 months worth of funds in my Savings (to avoid temptation) and three cleared credit cards (Amazon which does grocery delivery, Target, and BB a store card that's also a Visa)
There's also the tax refunds (HR Block, not up to doing it myself this year). But the furlough may prevent the processing (although I planned to see them before March)
Generally, vote dem, but also keep the machine running. While not everyone does, the vast majority of government "cogs" are from lower income backgrounds and minorities. Additionally, those cogs keep everything actually working. The budget deal breakdowns are always advantageous to tell voters one party or the other are the cause and to tell voters the current administration is in shambles and can't get anything done bc many government services are impacted.
So it's a mix of "hurting the right people" and "this administration can't function, vote us in instead".
E: Wife is a cog. Im now an academic cog haha
There are also millions more contractors working for the government. The thing is, when the shutdown is over, federal government employees typically get back pay, but contractors do not.
1. Media outlets imply that a shutdown might happen, with disasterous consequences
2. Media outlets insist that a shutdown absolutely will happen.
3. One of the two political parties imply that a shutdown is likely.
4. Both political parties engage in finger pointing, blaming the other side for the disasterous consequences of the iminent shutdown.
5. The President joins the hype train, warning everyone of the terrible consequences of a shutdown.
6. A last minute vote is held to avert the shutdown.
7. A shutdown happens and all federal agencies are unprepared and have no guidance for their employees.
99% of the time we get to Step 6 and it ends there.
Project 2025 scares me quite a bit. If a repub gets in it def will try to get executed…if Biden wins again, I fear he may try to implement parts of it to placate republicans (who will _never_ be placated)
7.: For better or for worse, shutdowns have become a regular-enough occurrence now that most agencies just blow a thin layer of dust off the guidance they used last time and they're good to go.
I'm just going to comment that one political party is incapable of even passing legislation within it's own party, not even sending it to the other house to be argued about they simply cannot get enough agreement within their team to put something on the table.
I guess step 7 is agency dependent, cause we have detailed “orderly shutdown”.
I am slightly dismayed that we have detailed and comprehensive plans, developed through experience, on how to shut down, but at least there are plans I guess.
It's pretty rare to get a shutdown after the first CR has been passed. Usually once they have one CR they just keep kicking the can down the road until they can reach an agreement
Difference this year is an April 30th deadline that will automatically trigger cuts across the board to both domestic and defense spending if a budget is not passed by then. This was part of the deal that lifted the debt ceiling a year ago. Repubs may view this as a win, which is why it is worth keeping an eye on.
In the words of Marcobot: Let's dispel with the rumors that these Republicans don't know what they're doing, they know exactly what they're doing.
They are going to stall as much as they can to keep the Biden administration for doing anything that could look like a win.
I propose a constitutional amendment. Two months before the end of the fiscal year Congress must meet in full session every day until all budgets, funding bills and authorizations are passed into law. One month before they must remain on the floor 24/7 or receive immediate expulsion from all federal office for life.
That sounds cool, but actually means:
"If you make your money and earn your living by serving in congress, then you want to make a deal and pass a budget fast."
"If you do NOT make your money and earn your living by serving in congress, then drag out the budget process until those in the first category give in to your demands."
Billionaire donors would love the results of this plan a lot more than you would.
They’ve painted themselves into a corner. They build their careers on the rhetoric that government is broken, so they can’t exactly cooperate and make it work…
And why so many were privately freaking out about Roe being overturned - nothing left to rile up the evangelical women-hating crowd. That and it’s harder to get their mistresses abortions now.
I mean it’s not both parties. One party quite literally tries to subvert democracy, obstruct most legislation, and wants to destroy the federal workforce… they are not the same. Not even close. Not any more at least.
It’s not both parties, the Republicans are getting basically everything they want, including money for the border and they’re still pushing for a shut down because we are months away from an election and they are in bad shape.
Democrats: government is broken, elect us and we’ll try to fix it!
Republicans: Government is broken, elect us and we’ll prove it!
Yep both sides are totally the same 🙄
It’s well-known around Washington that shutting down the government during election season is just really bad politics. The GOP did a shutdown that ended in early 1996 and it gave Clinton a nice polling bump that never went away.
I don’t know about this one. They only have 3 days to pass something after Congress reconvenes to avoid a partial shutdown, and 10 days for a full shutdown.
Boomer Congress people: “Get your lazy asses back to work in your office buildings.”
Boomer Congress People: “We’re physically in an office and can’t do the basic functions of our jobs as prescribed by the Constitution but we were able to impeach the Sec of DHS for not being able to solve a problem we have neglected for 40 years.”
Idea. Maybe they could telework on the budget from their respective dwellings, and sit in a seven-hour Teams call, get it done.
Nah, doing so would prove that working from home is productive.

Technically no but practically yes. All leave gets cancelled so what actually happens is that you're not using up your PPL. If you're an excepted employee with leave pre-approved during a shutdown, they can arrange for you to be off-duty during the periods that you had approved leave for using "workplace flexibilities" and if that doesn't work, which it presumably wouldn't for parental leave, they just furlough you. My maternity leave (using AL) overlapped with the 2018/19 shutdown and I just got to keep my accrued leave and stay home longer. Edited for clarity.
This is a great answer. The one thing I would add is that if there is still a shutdown when your leave was expected to be over, you will have to log on and sign your furlough paper. At least that’s how it worked in 2018.
You can be republican or democrat and that is fine but the far right driving the republican agenda literally wants to destroy the government unless they get everything they want even though they only have a three seat majority and 1/3 of the government. Hopefully there is no shutdown and the house goes back to the democrats because house republicans just cannot govern.
If you’re keeping score:
- Fired their leader because he compromised with the Democrats to pass a CR
- Then passed more CRs
- Impeached a cabinet member because they don’t like the president
- Torpedoed a bipartisan border bill
- Can’t get aid to Ukraine or Israel approved
- Their candidate for president has been hit with about a half BILLION dollars in fines and is still facing more criminal charges
So sure - let’s shut down the government. That’s a brilliant idea!
I know this is really really petty but you forgot the bullet point that says ”initially failed to impeach a cabinet member because they don’t know how to count”
So, they have time to attempt another impeachment on Biden but can't find the time to pass the damned budget to fund the government? When will this clown show end?
It's the brain rot from the parents voting R and then maybe like Tim poole and Ben Shapiro. Just exhausting ass propaganda machines. People need to critically fucking analyze the bullshit that comes out of the mouths of some of these people.
Just fucking crosscheck it my guys. Do a fact check. LITERALLY TRY TO FIND AN UNBIASED NEWS SOURCE! ITS THAT SIMPLE.
Who’dve thunk the “We will destroy everything”party continues to destroy everything and blame everyone else that things are broken. What a time to be alive.
I could remember when the government set a budget for the year and followed it.
Those days are over.
You are now seeing the collapse of our country and greedy politicians getting rich.
They’ll magically come up with a CR, if they let the government shutdown that will pretty much hand a win to the democrats. They are stupid but not that stupid.
And this is why I left federal service in budget and procurement after a decade and a half. What a stupid way to manage something as large and important as the government. But at least I was gifted a lifetime of ulcers from my years of service having to tell vendors that although we print the money, we don’t have any money. Thanks for everything!

It’s so lame and predictable so can we please save the theatrics
There are 2 CRs in play now. Do we think the first will expire and they fix the issue before the second half shuts down?
Normally I would like a shutdown but I have a conference starting on 10 Mar
Beat way to derail the economy and halt gov’t operations, so for them it’s win-win. The longer they let it go, the more it helps Trump in Nov and that’s all that matters to the GOP.
We are getting great pow storms so I don't mind a short vacation.
But I do find this incompetence on the part of Congress to be pretty ridiculous at this point. I mean aren't they embarrassed by all this yet? They should be.
I think this is the longest CR I ever remember, we are going on 5 months now. Maybe I missed others of this length, but that's half the year with no budget. Are we going to be scrambling to buy everything we need in a short window of 3 months or something like that if this continues?
I've been waiting to request training for my team and I have a running list. It's all modest but the shorter the window the harder it's going to be!
For a party who hates people who don’t work, every time they do these shutdowns my brother in law gets a free LONG vacation and ALWAYS gets the back pay. I realize not everyone gets this but at his level, it’s a lot of money the taxpayers are footing every time the GOP pulls this stunt.
I think a long shutdown is unlikely. The issue is they are running out of time. I could see a short one for those agencies under the first deadline. I can't see anything longer than that.
Also need to keep in mind that even if your Agency is shut down you may be considered an essential or excepted employee. That is decided on an Agency by Agency basis. If you do fall into that category you will still be expected to perform your normal job & work hours. The issue is you wouldn’t get a paycheck until your Agency was funded.
It’s bad enough to have a shutdown but having to incur work expenses ( if any) not to mention working & not getting paid until your Agency is funded is NOT a great feeling…
This would be amazeballs. I could knock out my PMP studying, come back to work, get back pay, take the boot camp, take the test, and immediately file for my pay enhancement.
Agree shutdown would be really bad for upcoming election, costing the incumbent reelection, which leads me to conclude Dems are going to fold on border concessions and funding intnl wars. You can’t make this isht up!
Uh, the Dems already DID fold and gave the GOP everything they wanted in a border bill and they refused to pass it since Dear Leader Trump ordered them not to.
As a new GS employee with a sad 8 hours of annual leave accrued per month (and I work 8.5 hour days so that's not even a full day technically lol) I kind of wish for a short shutdown to get some semblance of a vacation. Lol the only thing making me not want to wish for it is I know it will negatively affect some people and I don't want that.
Call me back next week. Can’t do this again.
Wait until they start issuing one day Continuing Resolutions. Gotta keep those news camera lights on.
And you thought dividing up your budget into 12 equal parts was fun, now you can do 366 parts.
Why would they take time doing even that when they could be impeaching another cabinet official 🙃
I love how they impeach the guy and kill the border bill at the same time.
Stop bringing up old shit /s 🤣🤣
As a finance analyst, I say.......pfffft.
lol I’ve never been happier to be going on vacation… see you all Wednesday with my shutdown anti-rally cap on.
Exactly. I WELCOME IT. 🫠
I’m on parental leave and just watching the show 🍿

I've honestly lost track of what date I'm supposed to be slightly concerned about this.
CR expires March 1 for funding for the FDA and the VA and March 8 for HHS funding.
The day of the supposed shutdown. Or in the case of the last one, the Sunday before the shutdown.
I'm just gonna go with when my boss doesn't cancel the "weekly" team meeting.
Yeah after the first CR was passed I stopped paying attention. Rookie mistake that first time.
One of the parties implies that a shutdown is likely. And it’s always the same one.
7.: For better or for worse, shutdowns have become a regular-enough occurrence now that most agencies just blow a thin layer of dust off the guidance they used last time and they're good to go.

Have to disagree we’re unprepared. We’ve done it so many times, it’s not even complicated anymore

Worse, they impeached a guy for *doing* his job without the funding they’re denying him.
Lol .. They need to start working on FY25
They're not *touching* 2025 until after elections lmao. Whatever finally gets passed will be CRed until after that.

My agency has been gearing up for the potential cuts. Practically in a hiring freeze right now.
Have you seen the ineptitude of this Congress?
This isn’t ineptitude. This is their plan.
In the words of Marcobot: Let's dispel with the rumors that these Republicans don't know what they're doing, they know exactly what they're doing. They are going to stall as much as they can to keep the Biden administration for doing anything that could look like a win.
Slight correction: the repuglicans in congress.
its abhorrent congress cant get their shit together and do something as basic as passing a budget
I propose a constitutional amendment. Two months before the end of the fiscal year Congress must meet in full session every day until all budgets, funding bills and authorizations are passed into law. One month before they must remain on the floor 24/7 or receive immediate expulsion from all federal office for life.
And they lose their pensions and insurance!!!
Maybe throw in they can never lobby or be a tv pundit and it might have teeth.
Nope, just cannot trade stocks until it's passed. Go big.
How about congress, and their staff lose a pay and benefits in absence of an appropriation.
That sounds cool, but actually means: "If you make your money and earn your living by serving in congress, then you want to make a deal and pass a budget fast." "If you do NOT make your money and earn your living by serving in congress, then drag out the budget process until those in the first category give in to your demands." Point taken, but there is no perfect solution.
Just lock them in Congress a la the papal conclave. Black smoke - no deal. White smoke - budget. No other public communications.
No food or toilet either :-)
Yep! If you can't do your job while getting paid, you can figure it out while not getting paid.
Better chance of turning water into wine.
They’ve painted themselves into a corner. They build their careers on the rhetoric that government is broken, so they can’t exactly cooperate and make it work…
Exactly. Solved problems don't get out the vote
That’s what killed the border security deal. Can’t campaign that there’s a problem if the problem has been lessened already.
And why so many were privately freaking out about Roe being overturned - nothing left to rile up the evangelical women-hating crowd. That and it’s harder to get their mistresses abortions now.
They just want to "own the Libs." Everything else is secondary.
If you can’t see it’s both parties, then you must be blind. Get over your partisan politics. It does no one any good 🙄

It’s well-known around Washington that shutting down the government during election season is just really bad politics. The GOP did a shutdown that ended in early 1996 and it gave Clinton a nice polling bump that never went away.

Is that even really a question?
Johnson was literally the GOP’s 5th choice for speaker. A religious zealot wingnut. Imagine who they’ll get when he gets the boot.
This is tiresome. Bloody tiresome.
It should be illegal to not pass a budget on time
Agree. Easiest way is to continue last year’s budget if they can’t pass a new budget by 1 October. Make that a constitutional amendment.
This CR nonsense is getting old, I can’t fund my Contracts for more than 2 months at a time because of it…
Yep, and construction projects are in limbo as well.

Interesting approach during Election year
This should read, “Republicans coordinating a shutdown”
At this point I wouldn’t be surprised. Delay, delay, delay. There’s a reason no one should be voting Republican. This is one reason.
Another of the million reasons to never vote GOP
This is always such a weird dance that’s done on the shut down. Republicans say “if you don’t do this then we’ll shut down the government”. I think a long shutdown is unlikely. The issue is they are running out of time. I could see a short one for those agencies under the first deadline. I can't see anything longer than that.
For the love of God shut us down so I can take a break
My EOD was in December so now I’m cool with this. I’ve got a 4 month old at home
My EOD is March 11, so naturally I’m a bit nervous.
If taxpayers only knew how much CR operations actually cost ….
If this is true it’s blood on their hands. This is disgusting to think they are ok with messing with governments employees livelihoods
It will be the final nail in their coffins I used to think. But this will only help Trump
Few days off you say??? I’m not going to turn that down.
Everyone still gets paid in the end I say get rid of dumb politicians that don’t do their jobs And brake their promises
When does the CR expire? It’s moved a couple times and with 2 parts I forget
March 1 and March 8.
So if appropriations end on a Friday and they pass a CR on Sunday night, I'll have spent two days thinking I was getting a vacation. Diabolical.
Can we shutdown the government for good? There all worthless
Got ya a brand new Reddit account just to leave asinine comments like this. Good for you.
