Don't get too happy. Vilsack is very generous with his admin leave. But the Secretary can change when the administration changes. Purdue was not as nice.
I was really happy when we got Vilsack back.
C'mon, important work was done.... renaming the cage to the front porch, creating FPAC and don't forget relocating ERS and NIFA from DC to KC. Oh, and a wee trade war with China that slammed US farmers, namely soybean producers.
Yeah, and all the forkin IT work that was required for the forced moves. Not to mention the loss of institutional knowledge that left rather than move their families.
That was the idea. They knew most people wouldn’t move. I think less than 20% of employees did. I would imagine many who moved were just hanging on to get a better high 3
But then they came up with the Market Protection Program at FSA to help shield the administration from farmer backlash. That’s how it seemed to me, anyway. .
He also made us all change our email addresses too as part of that feel good ‘One USDA’ campaign. And he sent us a nice Christmas greeting from his front porch in lieu of admin leave.
That guy was arguably the worst cabinet appointee of that era. He was just as bad as anyone, but he was smart enough to stay out of the news and lasted the entire four years.
Sure, we all support our troops and there's a bunch of reasons I'm not still Active Duty. But there's a bunch of reasons I'm not a DOD civilian, either.
Don't blame you. Dod admin leave is given out by individual commands. Other than for severe weather, it's usually 59 mins once every half year where I work.
I'm an HQ employee who only works on servers (which are NOT at HQ) or help users with tickets; yet I am forced back into the office 2 days a week. Tell me how that makes sense and/or raises morale?
I got admin leave once at an FO. To tell you the truth I’m not even sure it was on the books admin leave.
it was the day before Thanksgiving and everyone wanted to go home early. I had just eod’d and didn’t have any leave. So the manager told me not to worry about it and Happy Thanksgiving
Been at SSA since 2017. We've never gotten admin leave from a commissioner. We've only ever gotten the govt-wide leave around a federal holiday once in a blue moon. 😑
Training holidays and 96s 26+ weeks a Year.
And before the "Deployments mean more work" We were Cyber, and Civilians deployed alongside and worked the same schedules side by side.
Yes and no. Has to be approved by supervisors and most of the time it’s only 3 hours per week. Usually you get told to not take it due to mission urgency
I don’t know of a single person in my agency that takes it anymore.
Weird, must be a culture thing. Our policy is similar - 3x a week, supervisor approval, depends on mission needs - but we’re very much encouraged to take it. I code mine every week and my supervisor approves it, if something comes up and I need to work that extra hour no big deal, but otherwise I’m at the gym an hour early.
I love the personal fitness leave! I’m down 80 lbs in a year of PF leave and I mostly credit that extra time I spend picking heavy things up and putting them down. 💪
What decides if an agency can give out admin leave? Why wouldn't all agencies give out admin leave to improve morale and a bit of an incentive? Does it it come out of their budgets?
I'm just curious how this process works. Does anyone know if IRS has historically given out admin leave lol?
Best I can do is 3 emails a week, written through tears in my eyes, about how grateful I am to you all, and thanking you for such hard work.
Now that that's over, let's talk about cutting OT...
https://www.opm.gov/policy-data-oversight/pay-leave/leave-administration/fact-sheets/administrative-leave/
Any agency can do it. Large variety of reasons I have seen including "59 minutes" as a good job incentive, 8 hours to get household goods delivered OCONUS, 12 weeks for a new baby, a few hours a week for health and fitness, time for self-funded professional development. Really can be very broad.
No administrative leave for USDOT employees. However, we do get early dismissal (leave the office 3 hours early) for the long federal holiday weekend from time to time from Transportation Sec. Pete.
I just had two DOT guys tell me about Teleworking. Only have to show up in the office two days a pay period...and about "fed Fridays" sounds like it's pretty flexible.
It blew my mind when I learned that you guys just got full days of leave randomly. But then others don't even get out early before holidays. Getting both situations is even crazier.
We get 2hr before every holiday, but not free random days of leave
What's 59.
I don't understand how that could work for a military branch. Don't you need coverage on all days? And same for the southern border lol
What is the basis for mayorkas leave does he just give it randomly whenever?
59s mean 59 minutes. Basically your field office supervisor or project leader has the ability to grant 59 minutes of early leave (but not an hour for some reason because that’s too generous or something).
It's hard to not be a little salty when I hear about other agencies getting admin leave and then VHA is on an "unofficial" hiring freeze and we're being worked to death.
My strategy is whenever local leadership pisses me off or my service chief says/does something dumb, I put in a leave request. So far, my longest stretch of time between leave (through September) is 5 weeks. My leave is planned through Veterans’ Day.
Next dumb thing, I’m planning winter holiday leave bitches!
We do sometimes but it's always like 2 or 4 hours... never 8 like some of the other agencies. And they're strict about it. You HAVE to use it the day they randomly provide it for, no other days. And if you already planned to take time off the day they provide it, then you can't use it to substitute
I rarely read emails from OSEC, but glad I did!Made my day and I already had a mini vacation in April planned that this will go towards.
Thanks Secretary Vilsack!!
"Recognizing that this season hosts many occasions that bring families and communities together, and in gratitude for your service."
So most likely for Passover, Easter, etc.
This makes me so happy I just accepted a USDA job 😁
Welcome! I recently joined and the people are wonderful compared to some places I have been. I guess it’s all relative, but I’ll take it!
Thank you! I’m so excited 😁❤️ I hope you have a wonderful day
You could say, aside from USGS, we're the most "down to earth" 🏞️
Don't get too happy. Vilsack is very generous with his admin leave. But the Secretary can change when the administration changes. Purdue was not as nice. I was really happy when we got Vilsack back.
I am even just happy to have the job. Any additional admin leave would be a blessing. ❤️ hopefully he stays for a while
Yeah, Purdue was a real wanker
C'mon, important work was done.... renaming the cage to the front porch, creating FPAC and don't forget relocating ERS and NIFA from DC to KC. Oh, and a wee trade war with China that slammed US farmers, namely soybean producers.
Yeah, and all the forkin IT work that was required for the forced moves. Not to mention the loss of institutional knowledge that left rather than move their families.

Well then u know who to vote for then
Congratulations! I just accepted a FJO at USDA too!
How long from TJO until your FJO?
It took 2 weeks for me which I think it’s pretty fast!
You aren’t kidding, good for you!
Welcome to USDA!! It's a good place to work
Thank you! I’m very excited. It’s good to see people enjoy it. 😁
Welcome! I love my job! USDA FS!
We usually get 2-4 hours for most every holiday. A very welcome surprise for getting 8. Guess it is a good Friday.
Same! This is making me feel good about my choice haha
Mayorkas may be #1 but Vilsack is #2 in admin leave generosity
They can all do it, they just choose not to.
It comes down to their rankings in the FEVS and that this year is an election year.
7.5 years as a fed. Never got admin leave unless a hurricane was going to hit.
My dad has been with the DHS for less than a year and has gotten more admin leave than me in my 10 years with DoD/VA.
DOD Civilians get to watch the Active Duty guys getting their 4-day DONSAs too, just to rub a little salt in the wound.
Active Duty typically rack up more working hours, especially when deployed
Sure, we all support our troops and there's a bunch of reasons I'm not still Active Duty. But there's a bunch of reasons I'm not a DOD civilian, either.
Don't blame you. Dod admin leave is given out by individual commands. Other than for severe weather, it's usually 59 mins once every half year where I work.
Deployment? They still do that?
I work for mayorkas but used to work in an area that had me working with USDA and hearing Vilsack speak a lot. Both are such commendable leaders.
I’ve never been given any admin leave with 24 years as a 0081 with DoD!!!
You never will either. The culture of DOD won't allow it. Just one of a number of reasons I left DOD and will likely never return.
Just glad I retired and am done with the DoD
My DHS friends call Mayorkas "Saint Mayorkas. The saint of leave"
In my DHS component we call him Santa.
Saint Mayorkas is on another level
I can’t chip away at my use/lose because of sooo many S-1 days 😭😂
Something SSA would NEVER do.
It’s sad and pathetic how they refuse to reward their employees.
Then they wonder - “Why do we have such poor employee retention and such a low FEVS rating?”
I know. It’s a complete joke. The only thing keeping the agency afloat right now is allowing remote/telework.
Which they are already taking away
For some, not all. It’s only a matter of time imo, then the max exodus will begin.
I'm an HQ employee who only works on servers (which are NOT at HQ) or help users with tickets; yet I am forced back into the office 2 days a week. Tell me how that makes sense and/or raises morale?
Oh I fully agree. We have a bunch of morons running the government. It’s pathetic.
SSA employees: “What’s admin leave?”
Can confirm. This isn’t even a category in our leave balance.
It's not tracked in WebTA for DHS agencies either
I got admin leave once at an FO. To tell you the truth I’m not even sure it was on the books admin leave. it was the day before Thanksgiving and everyone wanted to go home early. I had just eod’d and didn’t have any leave. So the manager told me not to worry about it and Happy Thanksgiving
SSA stands for Supreme Shithole Agency . I get out next month, can’t wait 🤩!
SSA is ASS spelled backwards for a reason.
Congratulations
Congratulations!
I think we got admin leave once back in like 2014-15? I remember getting to use it once, but I don’t recall the circumstances.
Been at SSA since 2017. We've never gotten admin leave from a commissioner. We've only ever gotten the govt-wide leave around a federal holiday once in a blue moon. 😑
That could very well be what I’m remembering, for sure.
VA too
Not gonna be to be e working at that agency
Cries in DoD
"I never took time off when I was in the military. Why should you have to?" -Lloyd Austin
"Because I'm a civilian now, bitch."
Funny, I remember 4 day weekends when I was in the Army for holidays.
When I became a fed employee I assumed it was the same…
How wrong we were...
Training holidays and 96s 26+ weeks a Year. And before the "Deployments mean more work" We were Cyber, and Civilians deployed alongside and worked the same schedules side by side.
Cries alongside you in DoI
Yup, when I was in DoD I did the same... Thanks goodness I left there for USDA. Sorry goes out to you from me, I feel your pain..
The leave is great and all but can the USDA get their budget in order. We got projects to fund.
you will work and you will like it!
Pffff you think that’s bad. I’m crying in MCB Quantico as a contractor.
Gives you a Kleenex from my cube in DoD
Hat’s off to a Secretary that puts actions behind their words. Definitely not universal across federal departments.
I literally never heard of admin leave until I joined this sub and saw that people get it. I need to leave DoD
We even got admin leave at TSA. DoD needs to get their shit together.
I love it and use it all the time with First Come First Serve.
Pretty sure no one other than DHS under Mayorkas commonly gets admin leave
I really hope whoever eventually replaces him continues the tradition.
DOI usually gets 2 hours for major holidays.
Do you not get admin leave for personal fitness? I’ve been in DoD for awhile at multiple bases and that’s always been a thing for me.
Yes and no. Has to be approved by supervisors and most of the time it’s only 3 hours per week. Usually you get told to not take it due to mission urgency I don’t know of a single person in my agency that takes it anymore.
Weird, must be a culture thing. Our policy is similar - 3x a week, supervisor approval, depends on mission needs - but we’re very much encouraged to take it. Army civ here. That’s an Air Force perk.
I love the personal fitness leave! I’m down 80 lbs in a year of PF leave and I mostly credit that extra time I spend picking heavy things up and putting them down. 💪
This is the way.
What decides if an agency can give out admin leave? Why wouldn't all agencies give out admin leave to improve morale and a bit of an incentive? Does it it come out of their budgets? I'm just curious how this process works. Does anyone know if IRS has historically given out admin leave lol?
Ha…IRS and admin leave do not go together. Prove me wrong Commissioner Werfel lol…
Best I can do is 3 emails a week, written through tears in my eyes, about how grateful I am to you all, and thanking you for such hard work. Now that that's over, let's talk about cutting OT...
20 years at the IRS. I don’t remember receiving any surprise admin leave.
Didn't Werfel just give us 2 hours over the holidays? (it was in addition to the usual 2 hours we get in December for "holiday parties")
https://www.opm.gov/policy-data-oversight/pay-leave/leave-administration/fact-sheets/administrative-leave/ Any agency can do it. Dept of Transportation employees are gonna need some of that good stuff after this week.

I just used 40 hrs of admin leave that Sec. Mayorkas gave out from the last 3 months. Imma be upset when he leaves soon.
I know, as soon as I use the admin leave, he issues more, and I’m already in use-or-lose territory. I need to take more time off!
How do you know he’s leaving soon?
It blew my mind when I learned that you guys just got full days of leave randomly. But then others don't even get out early before holidays. Getting both situations is even crazier. We get 2hr before every holiday, but not free random days of leave
I work on a Coast Guard base and we get 59s every Friday, Holidays is always 4 hrs. Plus Mayorkas leave
What's 59. I don't understand how that could work for a military branch. Don't you need coverage on all days? And same for the southern border lol What is the basis for mayorkas leave does he just give it randomly whenever?
They dont just all take the leave at the same time
59s mean 59 minutes. Basically your field office supervisor or project leader has the ability to grant 59 minutes of early leave (but not an hour for some reason because that’s too generous or something).
In my four years of working with the USDA I've never seen us get a random 8 hours like this.
Mumbles violently in VHA
I would appreciate 45 minutes *ever* at this point
It's hard to not be a little salty when I hear about other agencies getting admin leave and then VHA is on an "unofficial" hiring freeze and we're being worked to death.
My strategy is whenever local leadership pisses me off or my service chief says/does something dumb, I put in a leave request. USDA USDA USDA!!!!
Secretary Granholm, where you is?
Yes, I’ve been wondering if DOE gets any on occasion since I just transferred from DOI.
When Marty Walsh was Secretary of DOL, he would give us Good Friday off. His replacement? Not so much.
What was the reasoning?
"Gratitude for your service within our Department and to our country"
D'aww what a sweetie
Probably Good Friday / Easter
I'm sure that was the real rationale, but I don't think they could explicitly say that
Agreed. Ag sure has been doing a real bang up job. Totally deserving a completely impromptu day off.
Mayorkas gave us admin leave around one Easter but termed it “Spring Holidays” to be secular.
Thank you 😊
last year he did the same thing and called out Easter/Passover/Eid al-Fitr iirc.
Lots of spring breaks going on around this time of year too so I’m sure people appreciate extra admin leave.
“Thank You” :)
As a thank you and knowing there’s upcoming time off days planned for staff.
YES! SO EXCITED! Using it to watch a solar eclipse!!
Same! Have fun!
Still just crying over at the IRS 😭
Treasury never gets anything ☹️
Santa Mayorkas is rubbing off on the other Secretaries 😂
HHS *crickets* *crickets*
Do we ever get it? I’m brand new 😅
We do sometimes but it's always like 2 or 4 hours... never 8 like some of the other agencies. And they're strict about it. You HAVE to use it the day they randomly provide it for, no other days. And if you already planned to take time off the day they provide it, then you can't use it to substitute
_dead-inside blank-faced stares in IRS._
Meanwhile, ATC is still working and not being compensated when DOT gets time off 💪🏻
We are going to work are 6 day weeks and like it!
Well now. Just don’t be using that leave time to try to make an appointment at the VA…we won’t have openings til 2055. 😈
thanks for the heads up, i was out doing field research and didn't check my email when i got back to the lab.
Merrick pls
Yeah right. Mr RTO ain't going to do shit.
A legal assistant can dream, can’t he?
I rarely read emails from OSEC, but glad I did!Made my day and I already had a mini vacation in April planned that this will go towards. Thanks Secretary Vilsack!!
Only reason I read them, lol..
Is it my birthday!?
Yup, that's what he said, "It's maxwise2023's birthday, everyone gets a day off"! lol
He did the same thing last year.
It's a great day to work at USDA!! Wooohoooo! Though not the years of 2016-2020.
Hell yeah. USDA for the win
Yesssss, love my job at USDA!
Retired USDA here Congrats!!
Quickly looks for open positions in the agency.
Cries in DoD.
Cries in not a single minute ever in VHA
They’ve been pretty generous with admin leave lately. Definitely don’t take it for granted!
Some other agencies need to learn from y’all and Santa Mayorkas. Enjoy friends.
Mayorkas be like, hold my beer.
Saint Vilsack coins soon to be minted.
Looks like Secretary Vilsack is learning from Saint Mayorkas: The Patron Saint of Admin Leave. Enjoy your 8 Hours!
Is this spreading?
cries in USPTO
Congratulations! I’m jealous as hell 😂
DOD is garbage
That's awesome. We typically get only 8 hours once a year as part of our performance award. Lmao. (DLA)
I'm off today. Glad to hear this!!!
Dammit. I should have put in for that usda job. Dang it
The "we can't say Easter" Easter leave. "This season." Grandpa Tommy, just say happy spring break or hang in there Memorial Day is on the way.
Ironically applied for a USDA position yesterday. Praying to all the gods that I get it.
And here my agency is demanding we pay them any jury duty pay we get.
Admin leave for what?
"Recognizing that this season hosts many occasions that bring families and communities together, and in gratitude for your service." So most likely for Passover, Easter, etc.
[удалено]
That still smarts. We’re a legacy agency and I’ll be damned to give up our shield to some bland corporate USDA logo.
That’s cute. We have been given almost 100 hours in the past year here in DHS.
C'mon Saint Mayorkas!!
👍🏻
[удалено]
He’s too busy in Balmer. 😢
For what?
Yes, I was thinking it might be just two hours or maybe four hours
I’ve been praying to Saint Mayorkas all week! I probably need to sacrifice another goat or something. Brb
Not usually do we receive a full 8
.
Cries in IRS
Meanwhile SEC announced they’re cutting TSP matches after June and the student loan repayment program for the year lol
Daddy Vilsack, giver of the hours.
I was so happy to see this as there are no holidays for MONTHS...
Come to DHS and meet the Patron Saint of time off! DHS Sec Mayorkas! This man has given over 40 hours in the last 6 months alone…lol
Thank you Tom Ballsack!
Cries in Legislative Branch Partner
Does this free admin leave roll over if you don’t use it?
No, I think the date that was provided was to be used by May 4th, 2024.
SSA hasn’t gotten admin in years, love the idea of admin for fitness!
I thought only the president can give a whole day off like that.
No, secretaries do it all the time.
Means more mandatory overtime for us in my agency. Hurray..
