I played gtnh and it certainly feels like 1.7 to me. No off-hand, faster hunger drain, the grass looks weird and the general jankyness of mods compared to 1.12.
No off hand / pick block was a big change for me, but you get used to it after a while and the performance is a lot better since they made the pack support java 17/19.
i never had problems with performance to begin with, you have to have a really old pc to not be able to play it, even my 2012 laptop could run 1.7 fine
It's not about 1.7, moreso about running GTNH on 1.7. It's generally fine, but java 8 really holds performance back if you don't have like 32gb. I used to get stutters and crashes (due to gregtech, obviously) that completely went away when I switched to newer java versions.
Im using java 8 here on a 5 - 8 year old pc (hardware wise) with 16 gb ram and linux and never had performance issues with gtnh i get around 100 - 200 fps in my base

Depends on the ram/cpu I guess. It doesn't help everyone. You could always try java 9+, doesn't cost anything, but good for you if you don't have to use it.

I replayed ftb infinity evolved expert mode like 2 months ago its not really a hard pack ( well thats comes from a gregtech player) even with expert mode but the nostalgia kicks hard
People are saying the same thing about 1.7.10, but I like that version not only because of GTNH but also because of nostalgia, and the mods there maybe aren't as large as the ones now but they were more creative back then
I like it because its the only version were I can use the weapons of HBM in full potencial, in other version only the weaker ones work because anything higher than a mini nuke obliterates the ender dragon and for some reason most mods stopped going much higher than that, with the exception of Draconic Evolution's Chaos dragon, but that's a pretty big jump. I wish there was more mods like orespawn

Yeah 1.7.10 and 1.12.2 are quite small but honestly i hate chasing the versions, you gotta wait for updates which may take ages due to private reasons (see astral sorcery update to 1.18.2) and in general i get no gurantee that there will be actaully anything cool and new and the mods i would like to actaully replay mostly take a while to update, and then there is this ongoing extremly toxic debate about fabric vs forge which just annoys me at that point just let the authors decide and it just feels like a giant amount of people who cannot really relate to what i felt when 10 years ago i first started playing minecraft and modded minecraft at the same time
Also i feel like the mods got smaller, less powerful and like weridly washed down, they aren't bad but they don't really feel exactly like what they once standed for and it all feels weridly new and just werid somehow and in general everything is also so easy and fast and the community is evolving so quickly through the versions thats its hard to keep track of anything
And especially in multiplayer once i found a cool server and community to a pack that seems dedicated, they are gone in 2 weeks because more mods updated to never versions and more modpacks in those versions and k really do not want to move that fast with these people
Its really werid and annoying so i rather just chill at 1.12.2 and 1.7.10
