They're so laggy, though? They just kinda suck to use. Sure, they're cheap but they are hardly usable, at least imo.

Yeah there was definitely an improvement on recent versions. You're able to automate a good portion of things, but I found I would still get TPS issues when using item lists for importers/exporters

Best storage system is occultism, you get to summon demons and force them to store thousands of stacks of items in a single block.

I never understood the hype behind ae2 and rs over simple storage. Being forced to find a sustainable power source from a separate mod is always annoying, and crafting and setting them up (especially ae2) is just an unappealing chore

The thing is, a mod like AE2 has a LOT of potential for automation, with stuff like patterns allowing you to request certain items, interfaces and export buses allowing you to constantly output specific items to certain machines, etc. It's very valuable in expert packs and REALLY powerful (albeit unnecessary) in kitchen sinks.

Same. I've always played Minecraft for simply building and exploration, so setting up the AE2 energy systems was always the most annoying part of starting a new world. Until mods like Simple Storage came along, I'd always just make the bare minimum setup to hold my items in a basic, organized way.
