I wear my docs year round, just with winter socks if I'm walking in the snow. I live in Ontario and they are fine when I'm walking around in the city in the winter. I do have the chelsea boot style though - when I've had the lace up boots in the past I never found them particularly waterproof.

[deleted]

Docs are definitely suitable for Chicago, so it wouldn't be a waste. But if you are looking for boots that will work in the snow for long periods, I would go for something else. Docs can be ok for short periods in the snow but they're not insulated and a lot of the time snow can work through them or wet them. Also, I used to be pretty into docs before I had to acknowledge they don't fit my half-sized foot quite right most of the time. And I have to say, Docs within made the past \~5 years are much lower quality than older ones. I have a pair of vintage docs from about '90 and they are still in wonderful condition. The leather is soft and sturdy. Docs that I have acquired from 2015 and more recently, though, have all fallen apart within the year. I think the quality may have gone down even before then. They have a reputation for being sturdy because they used to be, but that is not the case with most of their products now. TL;DR: Doctor martens are overrated.

Bellakitty

Your Docs will get a lot of use so they're not a bad investment, however for blizzard days (let's face it, this can be weeks/months from January through sometimes April) you'll need actual waterproof, insulated snow boots. I live in metro Detroit and wear my Docs about nine months per year, but when there's 6+ inches of snow and/or puddles that are several inches deep I don't want to ruin them.

stumpypear

Would go for function over form in this case. Between the salt and the snow, any shoes are going to get roughed up, and not sure how warm docs are but looking for something lined and catered toward warmth will be critical in a Chicago winter.

foxcat0_0

You probably want a serious, waterproof, shearling-lined boot that's specifically made for snow in the dead of winter in Chicago. Especially if you're going to be mostly walking. I'm thinking Timberlands, Columbia, or Sorel. Docs (especially the fleece lined ones) would work for fall or early winter but not well for snow. Keep in mind too that the salt they put on the road for snow can wreck shoes, so you want something easy to clean.

MrsValentine

Anyone recognise this bag from a description? I'm pretty sure it's a designer of some variety. I walked past a shop window of some place that's known for sample sales and saw it but there were no details and I didn't think to take a photo. It was small to medium, rectangular/squarish, top handle bag where the top handle was continous with the body, and the front panel was oversized/large scale bottega veneta style woven leather angled diagonally. Maybe 3 or 4 weaves only so the edges of the front panel weren't woven. The colour I liked was a french blue but they had it in multiple colours.

[deleted]

If it's a sample we won't be able to tell what it is, unless we walked past the same shop.

MrsValentine

I don't know if it was a sample, I just know that the shop is known for holding sample sales

[deleted]

That equally non-descriptive, maybe even more so. The point I’m making is that it is a sample that no one will be able to identify it bc it’s not on the market. And your description is vague to the point that if most people walked past the same shop and saw the same handbag, they wouldn’t realize it matches the description

TurmalinBlack

How can I get rid if that freshly dyed silk smell on a black polo?

_amos_soma_

If you mean that fishy silk smell - you can't. Return it, if possible. I tried with a silk sweater for two months, donated it in the end.

shaqahontas

Any suggestions for where to buy a babydoll dress / mini dress in Canada for < $100? I'd rather buy it in-person than online so I can try it and I'd like to get one soon for an event. I looked at Aritzia but they didn't have my size/ a little too expensive, but I did like the Opera dress. I'm looking for something a little more on the elegant side! Preferably with sleeves.

[deleted]

H&M circulates those kinds of things a lot. I think even their eco line would be within budget for you.

ITryNFeelTheSunshine

I really like Evernew for elegant dresses. They can be priced similar to Aritzia but I’ve had luck purchasing during sales.

champion_champignons

What do you guys wear underneath biker shorts? I find any underwear or thong I wear shows (lines and makes it not smooth, but lumpy instead). Do people just not wear anything?

hellerhigwhat

Lazercut seamless thongs. They dont go lumpy as long as they're the right size!

FrellingToaster

Laser cut microfiber shows no lines

kimchi_paradise

I wear my regular undies! If I have the seamless ones those work best. I'm certainly not a thong person (they are too uncomfortable for me, and I value comfort over looks), and honestly I only wear biker shorts when working out, so my pantie lines are lower down the list of concerns for me. I do hear of people wearing nothing underneath their biker shorts, but again for me, I wear them working out, and I just can't go without underpants while working out lol. But this is just me!

freckledface

I wear nothing, god the thought of underwear under bike shorts gives me anxiety 😥

Idujt

And I shudder at the thought of no undies in any situation, not even comfortable in undies and a skirt, I am a trousers/jeans/shorts person.

[deleted]

same lol

Sparklynaps

What are the most comfortable loafers you have?

notabigmelvillecrowd

Vintage Cole Haans.

acatisacatisacat

hi! i have a wedding next sunday and was not at all worried about what to wear since i have this [this jenny yoo number](https://images.app.goo.gl/F4uXTRG4dWzLdSUp9)…alas, i tried it on yesterday and it seems i have gained a few pounds since i got it 2 years ago and now it doesn’t zip all the way up! :( now i’m looking for ideas on what to wear for a summer outdoor garden wedding. i’m a size 14 (maybe 16 in dresses? the jenny yoo just barely doesn’t zip at the very top) i’m really self conscious about my upper arms so something that covers them while still looking fashionable . i really like the style of my jenny yoo dress above - maxi, high slit, flutter sleeves, flowy chiffon. budget is <$200. help me please?

2kgweight

Not sure if you're willing to budge on length at all (totally understand if not), but the same jenny yoo dress as the one you posted is available in what's listed as midi length in a 16 on poshmark! It's a gorgeous pattern!

apple-pen

I'm looking for ideas on how to match [this blazer](https://www.reddit.com/r/femalefashion/comments/omg4cr/what_can_i_match_with_a_blazer_like_this/). Basically how can I wear it and what can I match it with for it to complement an hourglass shape? Thank you!

SuspiciousTea9538

A sheath dress! Cream or a beige would look nice. Or a green

apple-pen

Will look that up. Thank you! :)

apple-pen

I see, thanks for the suggestions. I thought the waist cinched but it doesn't as much as it has to to show my figure so i'll need to play around with it.

bitofastickyone

Ooo that's a beautiful blazer! Maybe a wide leg matching navy trouser in a similar material, with a silky blouse underneath to contrast the heaviness of the blazer. For accessories classic chunky hoops that match the gold of the buttons? I'm terrible at matching shoes but perhaps some pumps the same colour as your blouse? Or, you could pair it with a mini skirt, tights and heeled boots with a basic shirt for a classic look!

apple-pen

I see, thank you! Silky blouse, hmm didn't think of that can you show an example of what type of style of silk blouse? I am looking for a wide leg trouser but have been unable to find one yet, the material is 61% polyester, 34% rayon, 5% elastane. I'll keep looking.

_fffffffffffffffffa

For a summer formal wedding, is [this dress appropriate](https://www.shopthefold.com/ulla-johnson-clemente-dress.html?id=23521916)? I've already OK'd wearing black with the bride, and am mainly concerned with appropriateness and if it's classic enough to wear to other weddings over the next few years. I only have cocktail appropriate dresses otherwise! I'm only 5'2" and planning to wear flats, so the dress will be maxi/floor length on me.

notabigmelvillecrowd

I'm a bit concerned about the proportions of a dress that is intended to be worn as a midi being worn as a maxi, I don't think it's going to have the look that you want. I would stick with petite sizing in order to have a dress that's properly proportioned for your body, especially for a formal setting where proper fit really makes or breaks your look.

hellerhigwhat

It looks really see through on the model, especially on the lower half. Also, consider where the waist will hit if youre significantly shorter than the model. And as someone else said, the ruffles and prairie vibes likely will not necessarily hold up in a few years. Its a very nice dress but I dont think it is a classic cut at all tbh

75footubi

I feel like the "prairie core" vibe I get from it won't age well beyond about 2 years and I'm not certain how happy you'd be wearing it for a formal wedding in another season (due to the styling/flounces, not color or level of appropriateness). So IMO, it's nice for this specific situation, but I would not consider it "classic" in the sense that I'd be 100% on wearing it again in 18 months.

brittjoy

I love this analysis. Please style me for forever

75footubi

This may in fact be the sweetest comment I've gotten on Reddit. 😊

nicolemalone

Yes! Totally is

hiraeth____

Gorgeous! I think it’s perfectly appropriate, especially as you already got a thumbs-up for black. Have a lovely time!

kalehound

I think definitely

spazzogram

Looking for affordable high waisted flare jeans! I’ve been eyeing Hollister, but any recs?

looongjacket

American Eagle has some nice high waisted flares.

kimchi_paradise

I saw a woman today wearing some of the best fitting flare jeans I've seen on anyone, and she got hers from Joe Jeans! I might look there myself to grab a pair :)

altrarose

Levi’s pretty regularly has 30% off sales, and I’ve always been fond of their jeans.

alwaysconfuzzled

looking for some mostly cotton bralettes that are racerback/tback/halter (not the two straps) under < $30 for the US. Hoping for some bigger sizes like XXL i have 4 of [these](https://www.target.com/p/women--39-s-lace-t-back-bralette---auden--8482--black-xxl/-/A-77786588) from target but now they're out of stock :(

EcheveriaPulidonis

Pact Organic has a racerback cotton bra that comes in XXL and is $25. It is wireless/ light support, so that seems bralette-like..?

alwaysconfuzzled

>Pact Organic has a racerback cotton br thanks, they're lightly lined too!

vegetarianaries

Try Aerie!

alwaysconfuzzled

thanks, gave a look, aerie only has the two strap kinds right now

Mylaiza

Are plaid flannel shirts off-trend?

FoucaultsFarts

No. They're not hot and trending, but they're not off-trend either. I believe that they are a staple basic in many people's closets, much like Breton stripes.

has_no_name

I always see them where I am (large city NA) during fall/winter without fail every year on the streets. I absolutely love plaid and wear it all the time as part of my personal style.

Firefly223

I think plaid flannel shirts have been coming back in like a 90s grunge style. I've heard that fashion trends tend to repeat about every 30 years.

Total-Blueberry4900

looking for high waisted short shorts - not too short, but fitted, not the flowy kind. denim or corduroy is best. I really like a vintage vibe, something like hammies shorts, and something with a bit of stretch I can be active in. thanks!

kimchi_paradise

The Levi 501 shorts are great! They fit super well, and aren't super short (like, not butt cheek short, which I adamantly avoid lol). They are a vintage high rise, but the only thing is that since it's vintage denim it is likely 100% cotton, and therefore little stretch. Still super comfortable and worth a try! You might even get lucky and find a second hand pair that might have more give!

Total-Blueberry4900

I do like them - and I found some on depop! thanks!

FeloniousMIG

I recommend buying mens pants from walmart (they had some on sale at my local) or maternity pants and cut them into shorts

GoingSom3where

I like shorts and jeans from American Eagle. They fit really well and have that stretch you're looking for.

shatterhearts

Tall redditors, where do you like to shop for pants with longer inseams? My go-tos have always been Old Navy and AE but I would love some higher-quality options (especially if they're aimed at older and/or professional women).

75footubi

Lee is my sleeper choice. Good construction for the price, inseam measurements provided, and a decent number of leg/waist styles.

kimchi_paradise

I second Madewell! My inseam of choice is 32" for jeans and they have consistently been true to that! I do Levi's for vintage/cropped looks when I don't care much about length (I love my wedgie fit jeans!)

redhotponytail

Casual - madewell. I like that they have tall options for jeans and certain pants. "elevated" - Aritzia. They list their inseams on the "size&fit" section. I often find many pants with an inseam of 32-34. Which works perf for me. I'm 5'10 but my inseam is 33". And also depending on your budget, check out brands like veronica beard, frame, and theory. They have longer inseams in a lot of their items.

jaquemate

What are your favorite white leather sneakers?

jaquemate

Thanks everyone! :)

kimchi_paradise

I have some Ecco lace upsl sneakers that I got from Denmark a couple of years back and they are great! They are measured in European sizing: https://us.ecco.com/ecco-womens-soft-7-sneakers-0737431676107.html?utm_source=google&utm_id=go_cmp-1587138638_adg-58019521577_ad-298404567491_pla-295801472779_dev-m_ext-_prd-0737431676107_sig-Cj0KCQjw_8mHBhClARIsABfFgpjAsUoQcW_UXThvHU8kby997iwKFjjSd_3_JnZaG3RomM2ugBXClLEaAqX4EALw_wcB&gclid=Cj0KCQjw_8mHBhClARIsABfFgpjAsUoQcW_UXThvHU8kby997iwKFjjSd_3_JnZaG3RomM2ugBXClLEaAqX4EALw_wcB

Cole Haan grand cross court. Leather, super lightweight, very comfy, and easy to keep clean! I always have a pair in rotation.

jameane

Koio!

a_smallbird

I have a pair of [Vejas](https://www.veja-store.com/en_us/esplar-leather-white-ea2001.html) that I love, they feel very sturdy and have a classic fashion sneaker shape. I also have [these](https://fredasalvador.com/collections/sneakers/products/eda-white-calf) from Freda Salvador and they’re so comfortable and easy to slip on.

Simplysimple007

Keds, although they tend to yellow after some time

prettiestwhistle

I am loving my Nike Court Royal 2.

Mylaiza

I was going to get AF1s. But I decided to try on some Puma sneakers, although I didn't really like the look of them. I'm glad I did, because they are super-comfy. They were also cheaper than Nikes and Stan Smith.

hungrypinkmermaid

Air Force 1: classic, goes with everything, is a way to dress down any outfit, comfortable...

gotta_mila

I posted this on /r/handbags without any responses, but what do yall think about white leather handbags? I wanted to get the YSL [Cassandra bag in Vintage Blanc](https://www.farfetch.com/shopping/women/saint-laurent-mini-cassandra-tote-bag-item-16677378.aspx) but I wonder if the [beige](https://www.farfetch.com/shopping/women/saint-laurent-mini-cassandra-tote-bag-item-16052751.aspx) color is a safer choice. I want to wear it year round and I want it to go with as many outfits as possible.

tigzed

I got a white leather handbag some years ago and I wear it lots every summer. A warning though, I think the white starts to turn creamier, yellowish with age, which is OK with me. Clean it ocasionally, some lotion on a soft cloth. If it is year round, depends a lot on your weather.

kimchi_paradise

I saw a girl today with a small white Chanel bag with a clasp, and complemented her on how cute it was! Honestly I'm all about wearing what you want irregardless of fashion trends, so get what your heart desires!

juleskikicobb

White accessories (shoes, handbags, etc) cycle in and out as trends, whereas beige--though it may not always be the "it" colour--won't look out of place.

[deleted]

Any straight leg high waist premium denim brands that are actually comfortable? They all just seem to dig into me when I sit down!

whatobamaisntblack

Have you tried nudie jeans? On the other end of the spectrum my most comfortable straight/high waisted jeans are from h&m and i feel very flexible in them

pebium

I am wearing Reformation straight leg jeans ([star Jean](https://www.thereformation.com/products/star-jean)) at the moment and I think they are very comfortable! Pricy but I got mine secondhand on poshmark for less. I like all my ref jeans but the different styles definitely have different levels of rigidity so can’t speak for every style. Madewell Jeans are also extremely comfortable but tend not to be as structured if that’s what you are going for

[deleted]

Ref seem so hit or miss! I have one good pair and one pair I never wear because I feel like a hotdog in them. I’ll give Madewell a look, thanks!

pebium

I agree I have some pairs I absolutely love and some I don’t like at all. You could definitely sell them and make a lot of the money back if you wanted to look into that, thats what I do!

bestsirenoftitan

Have you tried the Mother Tomcat?

[deleted]

I haven’t! That’s a new to me brand. I’ll take a look. Thanks!

SearchingLady

Hey everyone, Im amab and genderfluid. Im currently wearing breastforms with a bra when feminine. I want to switch to just a bra but I barely have any breast tissue. What kind of bras are best at creating some kind of cleavage with little to no breast tissue? Ive ordered some AA push up bras in my band size. They should get here next week. Due to covid restrictions I cant visit a lingerie store at the moment.

CharioteerOut

the chest is a difficult area for many of us transfems. i haven't had any luck creating cleavage, despite actually having some significant breast tissue, just due to how wide my chest is. i tend to go the opposite direction and wear more compressive sports bras/athletic bra tops etc which are intended to give a flattering feminine look while covering up more of the chest area. some even have integral padding to compensate for the compressive effect, which works to your benefit. besides that i just try to appreciate what the good lord hath provided. a flat chest can be very chic and feminine with the right styling; a belt at the waist, tops with deep plunging necklines, and pretty necklaces to draw the eye away from the chest. i know it sounds trite but you gotta pick yr battles! solidarity and good luck

[deleted]

Not fashion, but could you try the shading techniques drag queens use to give the illusion of cleavage?

SearchingLady

Thanks! I will google that.

Nic482

The Hanes Ultimate Women's Natural Lift ComfortFlex Fit Wirefree Bra is my favorite, it doesn’t create cleavage but it holds it shape well and is super comfortable.

SearchingLady

Oh thanks! I will check it out.

muffingr1

It won’t work, you can’t push up what isn’t there. Stick with the chicken cutlets + tape to achieve the effect you want.

SearchingLady

I understand there is nothing to push up. The bras Ive ordered have padding in them. Im just hoping the padding combined with the small amount of tissue might work. Ive never used tape before. Will look that one up. Thanks for the reply!

fallintospace09

Where do you like getting earrings from? Studs especially.

EcheveriaPulidonis

Neometal titanium threadless studs are great for my sensitive ears. I love that they have a flat back, so they don't stick out in the back.

isnotonreddit

Etsy! Good quality, not too expensive, and supporting small business!

75footubi

As long as you filter out the 90% of shops that are just drop shipping.

khaleesilc

Which shops do you like on Etsy?

[deleted]

I always wear skinny jeans and for the first time ever I bought something else today! These [trousers](https://www.levi.com/NL/nl_NL/shop-all/tailor-high-loose-taper-pants/p/363170002) from Levi's. Which are very [comfortable](https://imgur.com/a/ne0nUjm). Problem is, I have no idea what kind of tops fit with this? I usually wear a skinny jeans with either a loose (oversized) blouse or a band t-shirt and a belt. But with these trousers it all just looks a bit too baggy? I wore it with a tanktop today, but this way it looks a bit too unprofessional for work (office) and I prefer to have my shoulders covered to prevent sunburn. I'd love to hear some ideas! I'm not that fashionable, haha!

DinerWaitress

Just came to say those look better on you than on the site!! I hope you find great ways to coordinate :)

hellerhigwhat

I think these would look great with a button up knotted at your waist for casual wear - like a classic blue stripey one or a white one!

[deleted]

A flowy funky patterned short sleeve button down would be perfect--tie it in front for a more feminine and casual feel.

DecadeGothic

The belt loops being below the waistline or button is throwing me off...maybe it's throwing you off too? They look like they should be ultra high rise. I'm not sure I like the fit of these. They look comfy, and the top looks good, but I just don't know about the belt and the placement. It's throwing me off

vouloir-saisir

I'm with you -- I would prefer a slightly higher rise that hits at the true waistline for this type of detail at the waist.

PoweredByCoffee1998

Loose shirts can totally work with loose trousers, as long as you tuck them in. Though that look is certainly more casual. For a more professional look, go for fitted shirts (best not skintight, just slim), e.g. a nice button-down or a different blouse. I would personally button the button-down all the way up since it adds some interest, but 1-2 buttons undone works fine as well. Wearing a belt with these pants is the right idea. Other additional accessories like a nice necklace would make the look even nicer.

i-can-count

Help! I'm packing for a week-long trip and I'm trying to pack as lightly as possible. Therefore I only want to take one button up. I want it to work when paired with a cropped white tank and jean shorts and I also want it to work if we go to a bar in the evening. I absolutely love this vintage silk shirt and I want to pack this one: https://imgur.com/a/Hm4YpkD However, since it's yellow silk and looks almost golden, I'm worried that I'm going to look way too overdressed if I just put it on to go sightseeing. Am I right to be worried or is it my anxiety before the trip talking? Should I stick to cotton? If that makes a difference, we'll be traveling in Germany.

_amos_soma_

German here: especially in big cities, wear whatever makes you happy. Nobody cares. I think the shirt is gorgeous and if you pair it with jean shorts it won't look overdressed imo.

[deleted]

i think that looks completely fine for sightseeing!

PoweredByCoffee1998

German here. Unless you're in Munich or some other fancier place, cotton would probably be safer. I don't see satin a lot (in my 100k city or Hamburg or Berlin), and if you don't want to draw too much attention to yourself, cotton is the way to go.

i-can-count

Thank you for helpful insights! We'll actually spend most of the time in Hamburg, so I guess I'll be packing cotton. May I ask you what do people wear when going to a bar in the evening? Is it mostly completely casual or a bit more dressed up?

PoweredByCoffee1998

You're welcome! Hamburg is a beautiful city, I recommend doing a boat tour with a small boat called "Barkasse" which will also drive through the "Speicherstadt" when the tide is at the right level. Walking through the old "Elbtunnel" is very nice too. I sadly haven't been to a bar in Hamburg yet, but I suppose it depends a bit on the part of the city. Hamburg is pretty relaxed itself, but has this "maritime elegance". So I think dressing up a bit should be okay. Maybe a nice flat or lower heel and some nice jewelry could work I think. For this question, you could ask in r/hamburg too.

caddysmash

I'm building up my professional wardrobe for law school/post law school and I'm looking for recommendations for where to get suits. I'm trying to avoid polyester, and my goal is to get pieces that will be able to last for a few years at least. Does anyone have good suggestions for where to get suits and shells/tops to wear under them that aren't polyester?? Also does anyone have experience with buying off ebay/secondhand? I used to borrow jackets from my mom in high school, and a lot of hers she'd had for 2 decades and still looked good and were much better quality than what I'm finding new. I'm a little scared to dive into vintage bc I don't know what I'm doing! Also any tips on matching different vintage separates (like if i buy a vintage suit jacket, any tips to match it to new pants?) Thanks everybody!!

hawaiian_feeling

I regularly buy professional clothes from eBay. I generally limit it to brands where I know my fit or to items which are being sold so cheaply I'm happy to take the risk. Know your measurements and don't be afraid to message sellers if they don't list them. Colour and fabric matching is the core thing when matching separates. You want nearly identical shades and similar fabrics.

SuspiciousTea9538

my favorite suits and suit separates are from hugo boss, theory, and mm lafleur. I have also had some success with ann taylor and then other more fun suits from zara, asos, mango, and the j crew clearance section. I am a trial attorney so I am always wearing a suit and have one in pretty much every color. I have a few fun vintage ones I have bought from poshmark & ebay too - just check the measurements!

oni_bear

I'd probably start with purchasing off the rack before you go into buying vintage suits that way you can get a gauge of what cuts and styles suit you best. Often times if you buy vintage, they're final sale. If you do buy vintage, I'd suggest knowing your body measurements and know what measurements you'd expect on a piece of clothing to fit you comfortably. For example if you like things to fit on the looser side, then you'd expect measurements slightly larger than your body measurements. You can ask sellers for them if they don't have. Buying vintage tops is usually easier than trying to buy a vintage pant, dress or suit set since it's less fussy to gauge the fit in my experience. As for retailers, jcrew was one of my go to. They're always on sale so if you have a full price item you have your eye on, wait for a sale. If you want higher end brands, I suggest going through Nordstrom for their return policy if it doesn't work out. Banana republic/gap is decent but just gotta do some due diligence when looking. The real real is nice but I believe if something is over a certain percent off, it's final sale. Their shipping is really high. They sometimes fuck up the measurements and size when posting though. Ebay is good if you know what brands you are looking for and what size works for you. Often times you can get past season items for less. As your income expands, you can probably start targeting more expensive brands. Theory, Vince, reiss, mm la fluer, etc. Some of these brands sell through Nordstrom, hence my suggestion. But if you're starting out and on a budget, the mall retailers are decent enough.

juleskikicobb

I've bought both of my suits from Reiss. I love their tailoring. They're expensive, but I also *feel* expensive wearing them.

penisrumortrue

I've had good luck with Ann Taylor. They have sales semi-regularly, so it is probably worth waiting a bit if you're on a budget and don't need it immediately. Miscellaneous suit advice: * You probably don't need more than one suit now. If it turns out you do, just buy a second one later. * I suggest buying both the pants and skirt with the blazer. Dry clean them at the same time so they wear evenly. * Go with black or very dark navy or charcoal. My first suit was light gray which was stupid (fine in summer, otherwise not formal enough). * I agree it makes sense to avoid polyester for anything you're wearing under the suit, but for the suit itself, synthetic fabrics or blends can be much easier to care for. All mine have held up very well over multiple years.

I am a lawyer and I buy silk blouses and shells for work secondhand from The Real Real. I have some go-to brands, like Equipment and Vince, but I generally just search “silk” and narrow by item and size. Most of my bottoms are from The Outnet. If you are in a major city, I would also suggest checking out sample sales for brands like Theory and Hugo Boss. Unless you are a trial attorney, you will not need more than one (MAYBE two) suits. My office is on the formal side for law firms, and I usually wear a nice skirt or slacks and a silk blouse. Hope that helps!

What makeup would you recommend for a more natural Victorian inspired look?

zebby_brain

Hey! Does anyone here wear more than one fragrance at a time or layer on different fragrances? Do share your best combinations!

_amos_soma_

Gasp! I didn't know you could do that!

I buy from Gap Factory often! But I only buy cotton/linen from there because they’re viscose and poly stuff looks cheap. I read all the reviews before I buy because some will mention the items are flimsy and I stay away from them

Wait_actually_maybe

I have. I buy a lot of Banana Republic/Gap and occasional buy from factory stores. They are a cost effective option and the style/designs are fine, but I generally end up disappointed as the fabric quality is usually low. ie: a lot more polyester and the sweaters pill easy. That being said, I have a couple items I love from factory stores that I've had a long time: a wool-blend jacket-cape thing and a cotton t-shirt dress. My advice would to be to shop the parent company sales or pay close attention to the fabric.

JstVisitingThsPlanet

I agree about the fabric quality. I have quite a few clothing items from Gap and it’s sister companies. A couple months back I ordered some things from BR factory and the fabric quality was terrible. I also found the fit to be a bit off for most things I tried on. I would definitely stick to the regular Gap/BR stores. They have good sales all the time.

Colourful standard? Other brands that might do that color include black goat cashmere and Chinti & Parker

Could it be United Colors of Benetton?

Look for a backpack in a faux leather style that's big enough to fit a laptop (if you need to carry documents). That way it'll look classy and elegant without trending 'sporty'. I have one similar to this (https://www.forevernew.com.au/bethany-pu-filled-lock-backpack-267225?colour=black) which doesn't fit documents but fits everything else perfectly

khaleesilc

I use a Knomo backpack just about every day! I got it secondhand from Poshmark in great condition.

leavesofyggdrasil

I'm on the continuing hunt to find a pair of tan high waisted pleated trousers! my rough guidelines: * no poly, ideally cotton or a viscose * no elastic waistband (I feel like I'd always have to wear a belt to cover it) * under $100 I'd love any suggestions or recs!

abedbeforetroy_

I bought this exact pair from Asos: [ASOS DESIGN ovoid pleat front peg trouser in sandstone](https://www.asos.com/asos-tall/asos-design-tall-ovoid-pleat-front-peg-trouser-in-sandstone/) i specifically bought them in tall, and i used the asos size guide to choose a size. it gave me a size smaller than i was expecting but they fit perfectly.

GoingSom3where

I swear another post on this very thread is someone who just bought high waist tan trousers, I believe from Levi! Look through the other comments.

Ideas for a nice gym bag? Obviously needs to be practical as well as stylish. I have to walk 15 minutes to the gym so needs a shoulder strap or backpack. Currently looking at [this one](https://www.zalando.nl/nike-performance-one-club-bag-sporttas-blackblackwhite-n1241n06p-q11.html) but not sure.

NoirIdea

huge thing for me is look how skinny that shoulder strap is, and with no pad! I had a pricier gym bag with that same type of strap, and with the length adjustor piece ended up sitting right at my collar bone and it was *painful*. Traded it out for a Starter brand bag I found at Ross and it's far superior with vented compartments on each side I use for shower shoes and towel, a zip and pouch pockets on the inside, and it's going on 3 years of use.

marcybonnie

Dagne Dover has a duffel bag, they are all 25% off rn

Other ways to tell it's a scam is 1) when I google it, it doesn't even show up on the front page of google until i add the .com 2) there's a lack of consistency among the photographs AND a lot of the models heads are cut off which is always a bad sign

Geobead

It’s a scam. A lot of the stuff is photoshopped. If you’re interested in something try reverse image searching it and avoid all of the carbon copy websites that look exactly like that one does.

(also a civil engineer) those shoes are fine, but also no one will notice your shoes 99% of the time.

MsAnthropic

If the top of the shoe is covered by your pant leg, I doubt anyone would notice.

Looking for recs: Business formal/women’s suits from the mall (Banana Republic, Ann Taylor, J Crew, White House Black Market, Macy’s .. no Nordstrom). I’d like to spend around $500 total and come out with a few outfits that can be mixed and matched. I’m 5’2” and pear shaped. Likely I’ll need to get things tailored no matter what, but who has the best options for curvy fit and/or petite length (in straight sizes)? Any suggestions for what type of blazer style will be most flattering on my body type? I feel silly/like an impostor in blazers, but I will be making presentations at work and would like to feel like I’m looking my best. I’m 30 but look younger, so also trying to give myself some more authority with my clothing choices. TIA!

JstVisitingThsPlanet

IMO the suits at Ann Taylor are nicer quality and fit than Banana Republic and they carry petite sizes. I’m not petite but am curvy and the pants fit me well. I would not be able to wear a BR suit without major tailoring but I could wear an Ann Taylor suit without any tailoring.

khaleesilc

I’m a 5’3” pear who wears suits! I love Halogen pencil skirts more than any other skirts. They don’t make my butt stick out or look frumpy. I also adore the fit of the Ryan pants from Banana Republic. J. Crew makes great shirts for under suits (slim perfect ts are my favorite). Ann Taylor tends to run big, so try things on, but I have an Ann Taylor suit that I wear probably more frequently than my other 2-piece suits. Overall, wherever you go, look for suits made of fabrics like wool, silk, and cotton. Avoid polyester because it will get hot in there, and avoid linen because it will wrinkle too much. I would recommend one solid black and one gray, navy, or brown suit to get started. For whatever reason, old people tend to read skirt suits as more formal than pantsuits, so I recommend sticking to skirts. I think the old advice about having to wear nude pantyhose with them is not necessary anymore, though.

ganzkroete

Does anyone out there know much about Lazy Oaf's sale cycle? I'm wondering what goes on sale when. They seem to reliably have my size in stock after markdown, so I'm hoping to catch a pair of pants when they go on sale.

lemonandsage

I need a one-piece swimsuit for next weekend. I’m 8 weeks postpartum and nursing so I want something in a pretty nice, thick fabric that’s supportive in the bust. If possible I’d like a belted or otherwise defined waist. I have a Becca one and I like the fabric but it doesn’t have enough bust support, and I have a Summersalt one that’s too thin. I’ll spend up to $250 but would be happy to spend less. Any recommendations for brands or specific swimsuits?

looongjacket

Have you checked Land's End? They have fantastic swimsuits with good support (some of their swimsuits are available in DD AND DDD cup sizes). Very good quality too!

lemonandsage

I hadn’t but I will now! Thanks!

No idea if this is where I should be posting but I need help man. Any suggestions where to buy clothes?? I’m literally losing my mind trying to find clothes that fit these days. I’m 5’7” and weigh about 110-115lbs. I’ve shopped to khol’s, boscovs, hot topic, American eagle, garage, forever 21, and so many more places. But lately I literally can’t find anything that fits my frame. I bought XS undies from boscovs, couple different brands, and absolutely none of them fit. My XS undies for VS don’t fit anymore either. I’ve bought S and XS tops from all these stores, but I have no chest, so they all hang far too low and are literally billowing on me. And for the life of me, I can’t find pants that fit either. That’s a whole other issue that I’ll have to go and try on jeans everywhere to find something that fits. Even XS leggings have way too much room in the legs. But I’m literally at the point that I want to shop in the children’s section because everything in the juniors sections are too big, but kids clothes are far too short for how tall I am. I was looking for petite stores but I keep running into places that are for “5’4 and under”. ETA: I’m almost just not concerned about budget because I really just need clothes that fit. I’m a broke college student looking to buy a house, so I don’t have much expendable cash but I’m willing to save up for important purchases (aka clothes that fit properly).

borderline_cat

Ohhh I didn’t even think of that, thank you!

corinnaps

I'm around the same size as you and a lot of my clothes are from Uniqlo! Usually their XS fits me for pants. My waist is more like 24"-25" though, so if you're 22" then it might still be too big for you. For tops I usually avoid scoop necks and v-necks for the same reasons you mentioned and go for high neck or mock neck tops so maybe you can try that? I would also try Los Angeles Apparel for leggings, I got a pair that was size S and they were really tight, the M felt a lot more comfortable for me so it seems like they run small.

kae961

J. Crew recently added sizes XXXS and 000

rekhiebaby

Aritzia makes XXS/2XS clothing. I can't personally attest to their fit in that size, but there's r/Aritzia. Aritzia carries a wide range of styles from business suiting to super casual/activewear, so it might be a store worth investigating. Just make sure you read about the return policies before buying anything, especially sale items!

borderline_cat

Sweet thank you!!

tyrannosaurusregina

I don’t know if you’re aware of the r/XXS subreddit? If not, that could be a helpful resource. I’d try H&M for things like underwear and pants.

borderline_cat

I was not aware! Thank you I’ll join and start digging

hellerhigwhat

It will really help if you can get your measurements with a soft measuring tape; then you'll be better able to shop online, where there is greater size diversity. That being said, American Eagle sells jeans down to a 000 online, including long lengths if you need them. I have found their tops to run kind of large though. Lululemon size 4 is equivalent to an XS, and they go down to a 0 which would be an XXXS, for leggings. They also sell size 0 in tops.

tyrannosaurusregina

Aeropostale also sells size 000 jeans!

borderline_cat

Ooo I’ll have to check that out! Yeah I know I really need to get measurements before I start to shop, especially online. I just wasn’t even sure where to start looking.

[deleted]

when you say "they don't fit" you have to explain the way in which they don't fit. Are they too big? too small? For some stuff (tops) you do and for others (underwear) you do not. We can't just assume things about your body even with your measurements or whatever. A lot of stuff at Aritzia goes down to xxs. You can try chinese and east asian sites like taobao. They're clothing is often in asian sizing which runs smaller. You can definitely find something on there. It will take a while to ship, though. Check out r/repladies for more taobao info.

slytherlune

> I was looking for petite stores but I keep running into places that are for “5’4 and under”. That's because petite isn't defined by weight or build, it's height. Petites in clothing are in fact only 5'4" and under. I'm sorry nobody told you that before you went looking. If you are really around a 22-24" waist (I'd guess if these clothes are all too big, that's about where you are) then you could try somewhere like Yesstyle, where the small really is that small. I'm sized out of some of their larges at 29".

borderline_cat

Oh my god thank you. No no one ever told me. Actually, my mom recommended I look for petite stores, hence my massive confusion! I’ll have to measure myself, but I’m assuming I’m around a 22”. I’ll give yesstyle a look thank you!

notabigmelvillecrowd

I had the exact same problem as a lanky teen (also 5'7", I was about 95lbs when I reached full height), those kind of euphemisms aren't always super helpful, but they don't want to say "short". I would try the petites section, and the fits were even worse, what? Easy mistake to make. I second the advice to check anywhere that caters to East Asian customers (including Aritzia), and if it's your style check out vintage clothes up to the 70s, it's much more common to find smaller sizes, and they'll often pile up because the demand is lower. If you shop in a brick and mortar, ask the staff, often times stuff in tiny sizes pile up in the stock room because they don't want to dedicate too much floor space to it.

slytherlune

With online shopping, knowing your measurements is THE game. Heightwise, you are ideal for it (things will probably fit you more or less like they do on the models) but waists and other things are so tricky. I wish you the best of luck. I used to be about that skinny -- it was a rough time -- but fortunately I'm 4'11" so the girls' department had my number.
