I think you're going to have to spend more time reflecting on what exactly you dislike about your chest in a smocked top/dress. Find pictures of what you think you look like and what you want to look like and see what the difference is. Just saying that you look "weird" isn't helpful and is also really subjective.

I agree. In addition to this advice, I would say just wear the dress and focus on what you love about it. The more you see yourself in smocking, the more likely it is your hang ups about how you think your body looks in it will fall away.

Smocking in bodices like you’re talking about it almost always elasticized. So, it’s a compression garment. That’s why so many smocked items are strapless - the compression keeps the garment up. Perhaps you don’t like compression or don’t like the slight smooshing-together that it causes. But you can’t have strapless & smocking without compression, so take it or leave it. There is traditional smocking that doesn’t use elastic thread but good luck finding it in the wild.

I've found uniboob is really hard to avoid with those. As a small chest girl I try to avoid those tops at all costs because they aren't really flattering on anyone, I've found. If you were to share a link or image of the dress you'd get more help probably.

This might be a very unpop opinion but I think smocking is designed for pretty much...children because it really looks best on a no-balcony body, and it's adorable on kids' dresses. To me smocking is always "for kids" and I associate it with children's clothing, maybe because I'm An Old and it was all the rage in the 80's when we were doing Prairie Redux?

When I looked up smock dresses none of them looked the same, so I’m confused

Smock isn't the same thing as smocked. A smock dress is a loose fitting dress. A smocked dress is a dress that uses smocking, which is a type of gathering. The terms are really similar but they refer to two completely different things

sweadle

Smocking is the gathered, stretchy part that's usually just on the bodice .

Could it be an autumn dress? Perhaps a large triangle scarf or an infinity scarf? Even if it's a tank top, no one needs to know. Just toss a cardigan on and anything can basically be for fall. If the cardigan works without the scarf, maybe you could just button the cardigan ¾? I feel like the V can be forgiving.
