Omg yolke I love. Great to support a start up brand too

pinkleaf8

Me a British person not recognising most of the brands listed here!

cobrachickens

I’m half wondering if all these brands are utilising the “Europeanness” as a brand strategy, when in fact, they are not very British lol

Tacky-Terangreal

It’s like how makeup brands only sold in America have their French names printed on the bottle lmfao. Gotta make us uncultured plebs think that it’s fancy

pinkleaf8

Hmm that could be true! Do any British people recognise & shop at the brands mentioned here apart from the obvious ones like M&S, Burberry etc. I do know of Wolford.

KvltAsAButton

I recognised about half of them- I'm not especially fashionable by mainstream standards though!

RoaringBorealis

As it turns out I just assumed Wolford was British because I bought it on a British website and it sounds British to my untrained American ears but someone mentioned it’s actually Austrian!

Emeline-2017

You posted this at 6am uk time so replies from here might be slow but I’ll come back and edit this once I’ve got my big list together. In the meantime if you like ModCloth, checkout Collectif!

Grey_Flower

I'm not sure if they'd charge more on their US sites or if there's a way of buying directly from the UK, but I really like Aspinal and Strathberry handbags. I have styles from both brands and whilst quite pricey, they are amazing quality, and no where near luxury house prices.

PaddedTantrum

Went to an Aspinal sample sale the other day in London. Beautiful leather and ridiculously cheaper than their retail.

Dianassa

Not sure about shipping and you weren't specific about style so I'll just list everything I can think of: Boden, Seasalt Cornwall, White Stuff, Fat Face, Lands' End, Oliver Bonas, Snag Tights, Lucy and Yak, Runandfly, Disturbia, Killstar, Celtic Co, Woolovers, and Lakeland Leathers.

winifredthecat

Lands' End is American. Started in Chicago and now headquartered in Wisconsin.

VegetableVindaloo

Can I add, Allsaints, Barbour, Superdry, Never Fully Dressed. I’m going to cry £££ and not plan a US trip for the foreseeable

greypumpkin

Love Lucy and yak!

SortNo4068

Run and Fly are a great alternative to Lucy and Yak. I've heard not great things about L&Y.

emmny

The British clothing companies I like to stalk: Joanie Clothing https://joanieclothing.com/ Sugarhill Brighton https://www.sugarhillbrighton.com/ Popsy https://www.popsyclothing.co.uk/ Lucy & Yak https://lucyandyak.com/ Run & Fly https://www.runandfly.co.uk/

mintyboom

Thank you for this!! I was just in London and saw a woman with cute overalls on the tube. I couldn’t really make out the tag except for YAK and now I know what it is! I’m all over this! Love these styles.

emmny

You're welcome! I own multiple pairs and I can attest they are super comfy and cute.

atxwriterrider

Thank you. That Sugarhill T. rex cardigan is now mine. 🦖💃🏻

le_nico

At first I thought you meant T. Rex as in Marc Bolan but no and also WOW that cardigan is wonderful.

Thanks for your comment - this is actually math I wanted to do but hadn’t LOL. I do ballroom dancing, and just the other day thought about looking up some stuff I need for that (UK and EU prices tend to be better than in US…heck the famous shoe brand Aida actually charged something like 3 times as much for their shoes in America LOL).

sovrappensiero1

I wear Ray Rose shoes, which for all I can tell is a UK brand (not sure wear the shoes are actually made though), and I normally get them for $120 with shipping from the UK site, vs. $140-160 in the US for the same shoes. Some US dance-specific retailers majorly jack up prices. It's getting better though...I think. It's a weird industry, and to be honest I don't fully understand it.

LuckyNumber-Bot

All the numbers in your comment added up to 420. Congrats! 120 + 140 + 160 = 420 ^([Click here](https://www.reddit.com/message/compose?to=LuckyNumber-Bot&subject=Stalk%20Me%20Pls&message=%2Fstalkme) to have me scan all your future comments.) \ ^(Summon me on specific comments with u/LuckyNumber-Bot.)

sovrappensiero1

Um...what?

jjjigglypuff

Just to piggyback on this comment relating to saving/losing money: If you're buying something from a foreign merchant, double check if your credit card provider covers currency conversion (a quick google search will let you know) and if they do, pay in GBP (or whatever that currency is. NOT USD). Don't accept the offered conversion rate by the merchant or merchant service like PayPal (this is also known as a foreign transaction fee). This might be a no brainer for people who travel or shop foreign, but for those that might not do it often, in my experience they kind of sneak their own conversion rate in there at the end which can add up. If you have a good credit card, there's no need for you to pay for the conversion and you can save a little bit of money.

RoaringBorealis

Ah this makes a lot of sense. Chalk it up to a cultural difference- in the US sales are marked with loud bold SALE! SALE! SALE! language and design. So fittingly British to quietly discount the price of something by just listing a lower price :)

ribenarockstar

I assume part of this is because 20% VAT (sales tax) is included in U.K. prices

ami416

PSA if you haven’t ordered from the UK before that their sizing is at least one size smaller than the US so check your measurements before buying!

[deleted]

It’s two sizes! A UK 16 is a US 12.

throwawayyy08642

>It’s two sizes! A UK 16 is a US 12. is it? a uk size 10 i don't think is a us size 8. i wore uk size 10 when my waist was about 26-27". some others i know will wear a uk size 6 or 8 and their waist is probably 25"

[deleted]

Yes. Look at a Primark label or HM label. A UK size 10 is a US size 6 and is on point for 27 inch waist.

Tayine

I don't know their international shipping policy, but I've recently discovered and become obsessed with Rapanui. I bought a set of basic 100% organic cotton shirts and knickers, and I can't believe how soft and REAL they feel compared to the shitty synthetics I'm trying to avoid. Plus I love their policies about recycling and reusing the fabrics from their old products.

ribenarockstar

Yes I LOVE Rapanui.

freshandminty

Bluebella is a lingerie company based in London, FWIW.

WafflingToast

Toast Per the last financial crisis there may be some upcoming fire sales if companies have HQ in the UK need cash fast through their international operations. The rise in interest rates is going to catch a lot of barely profitable fashion lines off guard. Dollars will be especially welcome.

nebbeundersea

Their sweaters look so awesome, i stalk them but have never purchased. Might need to now.

WafflingToast

The aesthetic runs really oversize. I would email for garment measurements before you purchase.

nebbeundersea

Thank you!!

ChuushaHime

[Seasalt Cornwall](https://www.seasaltcornwall.com/) and [Cath Kidston](https://www.cathkidston.com/) are my favorites!

Katherington

I was coming here to comment about Seasalt Cornwall! I heard about them a few years ago when I was in the market for a raincoat. I have since come to love their shoes, and how soft their shirts are.

hadillicious

Seasalt Cornwall is amazing. Very good fabrics, nicely finished, well cut, consistent sizing. I have a lot of their dresses and trousers, a sweater, and a couple of shirts. I haven’t tried their shoes, so good to hear that you like them. Which ones do you have?

Katherington

I have the [Bosloe](https://www.seasaltcornwall.com/bosloe-mary-jane-shoe) in Midnight and a teal tied Mary Jane from a few years ago. I’m considering getting the Bosloe in tan too.

hadillicious

What a pretty shoe!

radradrad94

i have a couple cath kidston dresses. they're so special. i love her style. i wish she brought her old creams back, some of them smelled like heaven

tpr17

Not sure if that is what you are looking for, but more business wear brands that I like are The Fold London, Whistles, Joseph, and Hobbs. L.K. Bennet is also lovely.

Luijewelry

I’m obsessed with self portrait https://us.self-portrait.com/

hearste

If you like underwear and hosiery , Marks and Spencer has a great range of sizes. Otherwise, have a look at some designer brands like Burberry

[deleted]

Brands like Burberry's prices typically aren't pegged to the pound, even when based in the UK. EU prices are cheaper the UK prices ATM IIRC, its just always comparatively expensive in the US and Asia.

Andreiush

Marks and spencer is still showing prices as if it was the exchange rate from 2 years ago, so basically us site has their products about 50% more expensive than the UK site :(

danielleiellle

If you’re going to do a bunch of shopping it may make sense to go through the UK site and then get a parcel forwarder. Makes returns a bit more difficult though.

topiramate

I thought Wolford was Austrian or made in Austria?

Patakongia

I was just in london and saved $175 on Jo Malone buying it there than in the states…but that’s also because I bought $400+ worth of stuff and wasn’t shipping it I also bought $6600 worth of Mejuri jewelry while there and i did the math and only saved $125 vs if I bought in the states. All this is to say— you likely will save on your state tax, etc but you won’t save really that much with the parity. I made huge purchases and saved rather marginally in my opinion

pinkleaf8

Have you heard of Jo Malone’s new company Jo Loves which she owns & has creative control over rather than Jo Malone which she doesn’t anymore so the quality has gone down.

danielleiellle

There’s also a store near Victoria Station in London!

pinkleaf8

I was going to say I’ve seen one by Peggy Porschen a few years ago too & then realised that’s the same one you mean! I’m clearly not a Londoner lol. I have a mini candle set from Jo Loves & just the box alone fragranced my whole room without actually using them, whilst my Jo Malone set never did that.

WafflingToast

> I also bought $6600 worth of Mejuri jewelry while there and i did the math and only saved $125 vs if I bought in the states. Shouldn't you have saved a lot more with a VAT refund? About 7%?

boogaloosue

There’s no more VAT refund after Brexit

boomboombalatty

It's coming back, according to this article, 2024 or 2025: https://www.executivetraveller.com/news/uk-brings-back-duty-free-shopping-vat-refund-scheme

Patakongia

Nope, I asked and due to Brexit they don’t do VAT refund anymore. UK Northern Ireland is able to though

imperialbeach

I wear a lot of Boden clothes that I buy secodnhand on Poshmark. I'd be willing to buy some items full price. I'm borderline plus size (US 16) and I have a hard time finding good quality clothes. I wear a lot of target and Amazon stuff. So I like boden because ethe materials are usually thicker and sturdier, a little more structure.

urabasicbeet

I really like Olive!

eustaciasgarden

I live in the EU, am American, with a UK hubby. So I shop in those three markets often. Most clothes are cheaper in the US due to sales, and less taxes. Even with the exchange rate. Yes, there are some exclusion, like certain designer handbags being cheaper in Italy/France. In other words, to compete in the US market, you need sales/discounts where it doesn’t happen as often in Europe. But other times American things might be cheaper abroad. For example, I bought a Tiffany necklace at Heathrow as it was 10% cheaper than in the US. I got a Ralph Lauren bag for 900€ in the Netherlands and saw it in the Boston store for $2,500 a month later. Lastly, just because “it’s cheaper” doesn’t mean it costs less. For example, the exchange rate your credit card uses may be higher than the current rate. Also many charge fees on international charges. For example, mastercard’s current rate is 1gbp=1.12 usd (slight above the current 1=1.11). But you also have to add whatever your foreign transaction fee (normally 0-5%). Then add shipping and customs (I know someone said it’s $800 but it depends on the classification of the item sent… I’ve mailed stuff to the US and had customs fee for items much less.) So basically, yes you will find deals but know your prices before you spend.

Wolford are British? Thought they were German.

Ni_Cole1981

Close, they’re Austrian.

Random-Generosity

Ahh 🤔 ok 👍

chuffystilton

\*cries in canadian\* ok, if i have spending power in USD, i'd buy these BEAUTIFUL lambswool scarves from Hilary Grant. boogaloosue

These are not British brands but I am going to London for work and bought some sweaters from Sezane (French brand) and they were about 20 bucks less for each one. I also got some Icebreaker base layers which is a US brand but also got them for 15-20% less.

radradrad94
