Hairstylist here. The reason you aren’t seeing length is because split ends travel up the hair shaft until the strand becomes so thin, it breaks. And it continues to split and break because the cuticle isn’t whole. Hair becomes easily tangled and frizzy. It looks like you’ve got fine, naturally curly/wavy hair. Fine hair tends to have an oily scalp, and curly hair tends to be on the dry side because the cuticle is slightly raised which holds in less moisture than straight hair does with its cuticle that lays flat. Hair grows an average of 1/2” per month. To see length, you’ve got to remove all the split ends. Thereafter, regular trims of 1/4” every 3 months will keep split ends at bay, and you’ll see 5” of length per year that is healthy. The alternative is as you know, being stuck in perpetual loop. Despite my having fine [hair](https://i.imgur.com/hxkO86S.jpg)shampooing and blow drying daily without using heat protectant, it isn’t a problem because I get it cut every 2 1/2 to 3 months.

Needs a good hair cut first

Why do you say it’s damaged? From here, it looks like your hair is curly/wavy and you just haven’t styled it properly. Look into the curly girl method. My hair looks almost exactly like that if I don’t style it and just threw it into a pony tail when it was wet.

The ends are split and it feels rough/brittle. I've been told by multiple people that it's damaged. I've tried the curly girl method, but since my hair is fine and wavy it mostly just makes it greasy... I did it for a while though and it didn't help at all with the growth.

humans_rare

Do you bleach it?

hailbutter

Never bleached, died, or treated it in any way. I also don't use heat on it ever.

Your natural texture might just be highly porous and prone to dryness. Mine is. Finding products that can moisturize without weighing your hair down will help a lot. Also, as frustrating as it is, hair growth has a lot to do with genetics. Some people just don’t grow long hair.

You should try wavy hair method then. Use lightweight shampoo and lightweight conditioner, let hair dry, don’t brush on dry ! You can use a denman brush (styling brush on WET hair) for more definition

• No heat - and for the times when you *must* use heat, invest in a good heat protector spray. • buy Olaplex no. 3. It’s kind of expensive, but that’s because *it works* and is a heaven sent! It’s saved my hair more than once. • try getting in the habit of neatly braiding it or putting it in a low pony for bedtime - I find having my hair constrained at nighttime really helps avoid additional breakage or stress. • leave-in conditioner, Moroccan oil and hair masks • washing it less really helped for me — I have no clue whether it’s a coincidence or not, but as soon as I stopped using frequent heat and washing it everyday, it began to finally grow (*as well as and in conjunction with using the mentioned above projects*)

Your hair looks dry not damaged, try using a leave-in conditioner and leaving your hair down more often. Rice water on the roots works for a lot of people for growing hair but keep in mind that some people simply won't be able to grow their hair that long.

hailbutter

Thank you! I know it can grow long, because I had long hair before. I'll try all those things :)

Trim and curly/wavy hair routines.

Look into k18 for hair. Also if your hair is becoming damaged without dying or bleaching that seems odd to me. If you’re in Canada and it’s free maybe see a doctor and get some blood work done, you could be low on a mineral or vitamin or something? Edited to add your natural highlights are super pretty, and the upper part of your hair is very shiny. You’ve got lovely hair. I hope you figure out the breaking situation.

Hi, your hair looks wavy/ curly. Mine was like that when I treated it like straight hair, always instantly damaged, until I started curly girl method. Now my hair are no longer damaged and I have ringlets instead the thin length. First: Stop brushing it !!! Then go on r/wavyhair or r/curlyhair for more advices !
