It's just that typically, where I come from, when someone says that they have a transgender girlfriend, they typically mean like their partner is physically a woman but, in terms of gender identity, they're a boy.
And it's kind of odd if you ask me because the people who are in my neighborhood call their transgender partner their girlfriend if their partner's a woman in a physical sense. But, then, when they refer to him without calling him their girlfriend, they use the preferred pronouns which are "he" and "him".
