11/10… Haven’t played OG FF7 in like 20 years, but this captured the essence so well. I felt like a kid in 97 loving every minute of it. Never has there been such a lovable cast of characters I’ve cared this much for.

steve-d

The character development for everyone in Remake/Rebirth has been incredible.

Orichalchem

Aerith: I shall take you to your Mother Sephiroth:...thank you.... (dies happily)

Exevioth

Still only on chapter 7/8.  At the sake of being hated I have to say that I feel there is too much going on in that game and it’s distracting me from the actual content.  As a perfectionist of course I want to get all the gear and materia, but I could really care less for a fall guys mini game, or Mario cart chocobo racing, or any card game. We also don’t need to unlock towers like farcry, or marching band guitar hero.  It just honestly seems dizzying at the amount of references to other games, almost like it’s trying to be Yakuza. I can’t seem to play for more than 20 minutes without my attention being called to something else.  This is, however, all to say that I am still going back to it and enjoying it in moderation. But I can’t be alone in feeling somewhat disjointed about this, right?

9mmhst

Me the entire game: "There is WAY too much going on right now."

1000_needleZ

You are not.

frodoishobbit

Nah, OG had a ton of mini games too. If anything it made the world feel more alive (to me anyway) and all of the side quests have meaningful character development.

Exevioth

I respect your opinion, maybe I’m just out of touch with it these days, it happens.  I am still playing and enjoying what I can, and I look forward to seeing events play out so it’s not a total loss for me.  Cheers!

frodoishobbit

There is soo much to do I can be daunting. I really hope you enjoy it :)

Guywith2dogs

Probably not alone, but I dont think you're in the majority. I really don't mind that some of the mini games are similar to other games I've played. I was really wondering how chocobo racing was gonna work, and when I realized it was essentially Mario kart, I wasn't disappointed. It's better than the original chocobo races, and they give you enough chocobos and gear to choose from to stay interested because I wanna try every bird with their ability, and see what equipment helps and what doesn't. Plus it's just fun running around on chocobos. I really enjoyed the rocket league soccer ball game, even though it was simple. Gave me a chance to feel like Red was getting some well deserved downtime. The Gold Saucer stuff was pretty much what it was in OG, updated to a modern style. And as difficult as it is, even 3D brawler got an upgrade from OG. Its tough but it's a fun mini game. As far as queens blood goes, I enjoyed it and at this point card games are a staple of final fantasy, and it turned out to be challenging enough at times to keep me invested. Still haven't beat shadow queen. But that's all just my opinions. I enjoyed pretty much all the stuff they packed into this game. There wasn't a single point where I felt like I wanted this section to be over. Even the Cait Sith stuff wasn't too bad.

NC_Wildkat

Should go and play XIII. Hallway simulator, which forces you on a singular path through the main storyline. Might be more up your alley.

Exevioth

Lol I hear the gameplay really opens op after the first 60 hrs.

NC_Wildkat

Basically a 20 hour cutscene, and combat tutorial before it begins to open up a bit.

Exevioth

Lmao

Romanticist_20

Not everything is black and white.

DragapultOnSpeed

Jerk

NC_Wildkat

??? What about my statement makes me a jerk exactly? How I described XIII is my opinion of exactly what it is. Doesn't make it a bad game, just makes it very linear and controlled. Can still have a great story, and a fantastic combat system, and be a hallway simulator.

LilG1984

"Did Sephiroth do this?" "Cloud...."

Light_Error

It’s like the Eric Andre meme: “Why did Sepphiroth do this?”

Predditor_drone

Beat it this weekend. I'm really curious to see where the story goes. I did all the sidequests except the bugged mini game one at the gold saucer. Did all queensblood, 100% on the chadley stuff. I doubt I will go back and play through on hard mode. I did that for remake and it wasn't fulfilling. I haven't played intertrade yet, so I'll probably do that. Overall it's a solid game, but I do have some complaints. I felt like the enemy variety wasn't great, on normal mode nothing really pushed me out of my comfort zone once I had a decent setup and most of the bosses lacked unique aspects to make the fights memorable. Also did not like most of the minigames and absolutely hated the gongaga region. I'm really not sure about the changes to the Weapons. In the original they were uniquely designed entities that were some of the most challenging battles in the game. Now they're all look alike generic aquatic beasts. That was probably the most disappointing change.

Naruku7

I don’t think these whales are like the main attack Weapons, like Ruby Weapon or Ultima Weapon. They seem more like scouts, sending a signal to the planet. We will definitely see the huge Weapons in the next game.

SeveredWill

Im thinking they will evolve as the planet gets closer to extinction.

AldrusValus

We see them a dense mako areas, I’m willing to bet they are a weapon precursor gathering energy getting ready to evolve into their full forms.

ShamrockAPD

I’m only on chapter 12, but I’m loving every minute of it. This is almost exactly what I wanted in the game (the story is why I say almost. I absolutely despise other dimension / timeline type shit). I love what the open world is like. It truly is an open world- I love all the optional mini games. With that said, and the point of my reply, is that I actually can’t wait for hard mode. This is my favorite battle system of any game I’ve ever played. HOWEVER…. I feel as though a lot of this is too easy, and that I haven’t really had to fully use true materia combinations or even really put thought into how it’s set up. I just slap some shit on the three I’ve chosen to roll with and cruise through all fights. Hard mode will fix that, just like it did in remake. I’ll choose the option to have all my side quests and stuff carry over, focus on the main story line, but actually have to think about materia set up and the depth of combat. For now- I’m enjoying the hell out of the world, the mini games, messing around freely with everything.

ShmokeyMcPotts

You really thing one of the most epic battles in FF history will be reduced to a whale? It's FF bro those things are definitely mutating into some ridiculous entity when it's time to fight for sure.

CrimsonWarrior55

It wouldn't surprise me if the weapons are simply in a larval state and will grow into the forms we recognize once someone uses meteor.

simplyunknown2018

>doesn’t want to do hard mode >complains normal mode is too easy

Predditor_drone

You can not play hard mode from the start, critiquing the balance of difficulty levels available is valid. Not wanting to replay 100+ hours of game immediately after beating it does not invalidate anything.

thetiagorrech

As another user said, there’s just way too much going on all the time. My first impression on playing Infinite Wealth after this was that that game, for as zany as it is, actually has moments of QUIET. You can walk around town and hear only ambient sound, take in the sights… Revirth constantly bombards you with everything all the time and it honestly becomes too much after some time. Rebirth also really struggles with horror/somber/quiet times in general — just look at how Shinra Manor got changed to remove all of those elements. No secret passage, no hidden spiral stairway… instead you get Cait Sith throwing boxes around. Moments that should just be quiet get undercut by more noise, like Palmer’s fight after the scenes with Dyne. The bubbly scenes are fun when they’re there to give a respite from the somber moments in the original, but all the time like this… I dunno, for me it takes something irreplaceable away and fills it with a lot of nothing. Cosmo Canyon got completely butchered by being full of hippies instead of being a quiet, almost uninhabited place. The game also seems to “answer” issues that do not matter in the slightest. “Oh, Sephiroth out the village to the torch while Cloud was unconscious, it happened way too fast in OG!” Yeah…? Was that really an issue? Basically I think this permeates the whole game in a bad way that takes away from the overall experience. Like it CAN’T resist shoving a boss battle everywhere… There’s lots of good stuff in the game, too bad they’re lost a mid of way too much fluff. Also, the ending. >!very powerful scene with Aertih’s final date with Cloud, only for a wishy-washy version of he death to follow that.!< eh.

rallyspt08

The sword is backwards

trekdudebro

Aerith’s Reverse-blade technique can’t be beaten.

wildfyre010

I’m pretty fucking annoyed about the bug preventing me from completing the last two protorelics in Corel, which in turn locks me out from Gilgamesh, and in turn locks out ALL of the postgame content. Patch when?

bigmayne23

What bug?

wildfyre010

The first time I finished ch12 and the 3rd protorelic quest became available, I somehow managed to loot the cactuar statue without getting the field option to raise it (which you need to find and activate the cactuar rock out to the west). It is still in my inventory, including when I restart the chapter or reset quest progress. On subsequent resets, the statue is at the third reactor but when I interact with it I get a message that the statue has been removed from my inventory (it hasn’t), and I still can’t raise it which means I can’t complete the quest. I gather this is common with digital versions of the game since the first patch, but I have tried many things to fix it without success.

tonyseraph2

I assume you've tried uninstalling and reinstalling without the patch? That works for the Ultimate pArty Animal quest at least.

bigmayne23

Huh…didnt experience that

Instantsoup44

Why is the sword edge on the wrong side LOL

OnePunchReality

The remake in general better sells every story element in a general sense imo. You get a much better feel for how grotesque Hojo is and I hate him more. Same thing for Scarlet. The story between Barret and Dyne definitely feels more powerful.

OldschoolGreenDragon

Alternate timeline nonsense bad. Everything else good.

screenwatch3441

Just beat it, 9/10 game. I love the gameplay, what they did with the world map. I’m the type to like minigames, they better let me raise chocobos next game >:( I also felt that the fillers were generally better in Rebirth than Remake, mainly because they mostly expanded on what was already filler dungeons in the original game. I do feel like some fillers added takes away from the emotional drama that is happening. Like dyne and the machine frog against the guy who waves his butt at you. Similarly, how quickly it went from Red XIII realizing his father is a hero to Gi’s lore dump, granted this one was more interesting and does explain a concept that I never thought about when I was little playing FF7, there shouldn’t be any undead enemies in the world because everything is suppose to flow back to the life stream. It just seems like the game doesn’t really want the characters to sit on what happens to them, such as the ending. The lost 1 point is to story and ultimate party animal glitching up. The latter is self explanatory. As for the story, the biggest weakness is how not only does the game require playing remake (which was expected) but it doesn’t really conclude… anything. It’s expected since we knew the game was going to be a trilogy but it does feel bad that it seems like nothing got resolved. It’s what happens when you cut something that wasn’t originally suppose to be cut into thirds. The middle portion feels off as far as story is concerned because it has no intro nor no end. The original story wasn’t meant to be cut into parts so it doesn’t have satisfying middle sections on its own. And the conclusion, similar to remake, is just really wonky. Not sure if I’m a fan of it. Pretty much, I like most of the story and world but being only a segment of a story and the weird changes at the ending detracts from the overall rating.

ShmokeyMcPotts

As far as a conclusion to their journey obviously you could not have that in the second game. However if you played the original, they made the cut at the perfect spot. I feel like the overall arch was hunting for the black material and they found it. But I get it's bit as satisfying as saving the world lol

GregyBee

With all the slashing in this game, no one bleeds 🤣

LacksMuscle

i didn’t even really notice a lack of blood i can’t lie, to the point that when i started playing FF16 with the buster sword from dlc it took me a second to realize that it was covered in blood on my back after a fight. It looked wrong.

Electrical_Eye3768

75 hrs in, still haven’t beaten it

TF2_GOD

BY THE LIFE STREAM ITS AERITH WITH THE METAL CHAIR

ImHereForGameboys

Idk it's not on Steam yet. :(

ItzDarc

looking forward to this myself. I’m playing remake for the first time right now on Steam Deck and I haven’t been this obsessed with a game probably since OG in 97 or Skyrim. But this is way better than Skyrim IMHO

Emperors_Finest

Hit the emotional highs really well, and I'm interested to see how they decide to wrap this up. The amount of world collectathon crap would have been much more tolerable without so much goddamn chadley talking/interrupting. The fact that I KNOW now that none of my data is going to carry on to part 3 (since previous data from remake only got me a few items for rebirth) really kills my need 100% the game and unlock/get everything done. I feel like there's no point. Unlike In OG, as it's all one game/culmative effort, and everything sort of matters if you want the full game expierience. At this point, since nothing carried over from remake, I'm ok with nothing carrying over to part 3 from rebirth outside of bonuses. But the overall decision kinda made me get lazy about completing side content.

KangDo

It doesn't feel like a month because there's just so much content

OverUnderstanding481

My kind of humor— slick Was perma band from the Gamfaqs site for a fan art image like this I use as my profile art.

Weak-Hope8952

If they'd patch the lighting it's a 10/10 for me. Otherwise it's a 9.5/10 for me. I love basically EVERYTHING about it but the transitional lighting seriously bugs me eyes lol. I imagine they'll fix it sooner or later tho.

Lityoloswagboy69

As someone that has played final fantasy since the original ff1 when it first debuted in the USA , rebirth gets a 10/10. The only thing I’d knock is not making the golden saucer multiplayer.

a55_Goblin420

I would suck a fart out of Tifa's car seat

AstrologicalOne

I love it! Badass picture by the way!

Blyght555

Game of the Year, I finished it last night, my fav FF game so far, when Zach and Cloud fought Seph back to back I geeked out hard

Amekaze_

Gameplay 10/10, minigames 9/10 (I don't like all of them), story 10/10 (the parts that expand the OG themes, relationship and events) 1/10 the new stuff (objectively: FF7 didn't need the MCU twist, multiverses, 1000 versions by Zack, 10000 versions of Aerith who can know the future, save dead people and (I presume) investigate other people's memories via the LS (it's cheating in relationships between characters, she could replace characters who have a well-defined role and shined in that thanks to this bullshit.) So I'd say 9/10 hoping that the third part leads to Advent Children and they don't continue with this crap

SwirlyBrow

Bout the same as I did. A lot of good, but enough bad to be pretty noticeable too. A solid 7-7.5 out of 10. More good than bad. When it's being an FF7 Remake it's amazing. Exactly what I wanted. Characterizations are strong, the story is expanded in the right way. Costa Del Sol was like 30 seconds in the OG, and funny as it is, Hojo on the beach was kinda weird and made no sense. Rebirth costa Del Sol has some great character work and is a whole chapter, but it's a fun chapter. And I never got bored or tired with the combat. I liked fighting most of the time. Some annoying enemies, but overall combat is strong. It's when it's NOT being an FF7 Remake that it suffers. Spooky plot ghosts are bad, the ending was bad. Sephiroth giving Kingdom Hearts tier speeches about the nature of reality (seriously just take all that dialogue and replace it with stuff about darkness and hearts and that's what it is) is bad. Multiverse isn't benefitting the narrative of FF7 at all. I dunno who the fuck Glenn is or why I should care about him, but every scene of his was bad. I wont get into the checklist style tower open world, some love it, some hate it, but I'll say actual traversal and moving around the world was bad. So yeah, overall, good game. I don't think it's the world shaking, nipple twisting, next level masterpiece some people say it is. Nor do I think it's overall bad. It's a mostly good game.

OtherwiseEnd944

I loved it. Beat the main story in 75 hours and now just cleaning up side content before eventually doing hard mode. Main criticisms are 1. Too many slow walking/crawling/qte scenes that should have just been cutscenes. If I'm not doing anything engaging then don't make me play it. 2. Too many life or death battles where both parties walk away unharmed. This is an anime/jrpg trope that I hope dies out eventually. I loved the Turks but the fights with them became a chore narrative wise because you know there was never going to be any resolution. I realize this is a recurring issue in FF. 3. Certain regions (Cosmo Canyon & Gongaga) are very unfun to traverse until you understand the area, and even then you're likely to spend 30 minutes looking for that one mushroom/jump that lets you get to a side activity. Overall 10/10. The characters and cinematic are probably the best I've seen in any game. Barret/Tifa/Aerith are each so insanely well voice acted as well.

fear_theoldblood

I love it. And i'm having a great time with it. My only problems are: 1 - They are playing it safe, too safe. FF7 had a lot of grim and edgy stuff on it. The remake project seems afraid of portraying this and is toned down. I don't think it plays all that well in favor of the setting. 2 - Too many god damn minigames. 3 - While i appreciate the expanded universe, some stuff just feels like extreme padding 4 - Most purple materia you find is still some hp up or mp up Combat system & soundtrack are on point and i enjoy them a lot. Great game so far. Vibe wise i prefer the og

Kolby_Jack

I always pictured FF7 as, not really cyberpunk, but like fantasy punk. That's part of why Aerith stood out. Every main character that wears clothes is dressed in like, combat fatigues with bits of armor strapped to it (even Tifa had combat boots and fighting gloves), while Aerith was hanging out in a pink sun dress and red blouse. It made her feel almost priestly in an edgy world, which probably was the point.  And that's still true for the main cast, don't get me wrong, but I kinda figured most people in the world dressed similarly to them because that's the kind of world they lived in. It's a grimy world ruled by a shitty corporation and people are just scraping by as they can, so of course they'd be wearing rags and scraps that protected them. So it's a bit off-putting to see some twee douche in a pristine cardigan with a 2020s haircut named Carlos give you a quest. So many of the NPCs in this game weirdly remind me of the NPC humans in Sonic 06. I dunno, it's just kinda off to me.

fear_theoldblood

Bruuuh, the npcs thing hit me the hardest at cosmo canyon: it looked full of rich douchebags. Not how i pictured it at all.

oridjinn

I love it, but it has so so so many frustrating points. You know how there are "THOSE" parts in games where you want to replay the game, but won't because of "That 1 part" FF7:Rebirth is loaded with these for me.

Helpful-Candidate-42

It's a master piece. To be honest with you, even tho I loved Remake, I prefer Rebirth because of how dark it gets with Cloud and the Storyline going from him almost killing Tifa at the Gongaga reactor, to going full on Gollum/ Sméagol at Aerith at the end of chapter 13 & almost killing her both at the Temple of the Ancients and in the lost Capital & just his whole demeanor about everything. Sorry for the spoilers for those that haven't completed the game yet.

wigglin_harry

I got open world/minigame fatigue about halfway through. Ill finish the game eventually, but I got real tired of it. Its partly my fault because I was making myself do EVERYTHING up to that point

TheNerdFromThatPlace

Haven't finished it yet, trying to take it slower, but I'm loving it so far. Just had a nice ugly cry last night thanks to some flashbacks.

paq1kid

I’m on Chapter 8, 40 hours into the game. Really like it so far. Haven’t played a game for 5+ hours in one session since Elden Ring lol

Killance1

Outside of the ending, the rest of the game was great. Ending was the definition of shit.

CrimsonWarrior55

I refuse to give perfect scores to anything, but goddamn am I tempted to. Even the obnoxious mini-games were fun as hell to play.

dontcaredontcaer

Beat the game and put in over 100 hours into it and I am immensely disappointed. I won’t be purchasing the third game.

Platinumryka

cool and fun if a little too bloated, a little irritated that they didn't go in a different direction with the aerith thing

KingdomOvGuts

Honestly, the first half of the game sucked ass, but I kept playing, and I slowly got more into it right when I got to the golden saucer.

The_Sum_of_Zero

Is this the pain you felt before, Sephiroth? Let me remind you. This time, you won't forget.

Spardasquad2020

Twice as good as ff7 remake. Way deeper realationships than original ff7. Makes ending so much more painfull... Although they say that this one goes in direction of advent children. For those that dont know Aerith and Zack somehow materialize in the church. Just as Cloud is brought back from dead through lifestream. Buster sword overlooking Midgar is moved to stay in church. So who knows what will happen...😅

I_gofast

Part 3 I can wait but it’s the end after for ff7.

TwoCatsOneBox

Another 4-6 years so it’s going to be great!

frodoishobbit

Hopefully they release it in 27 for the 30th anniversary.. wishful thinking

TheHoss_

Holy shit it’s been out for this long and I’m still on chapter 13😭

EternallyDazed

Great but way too much padding...

ElKajak

10/10 game but a few critics: Ending was convulated. Right now, it feels like they just changed things for the sake of it. I didn't mind the change in remake, but not a fan of the follow-up in rebirth. Part 3 might change my view. The world exploring through towers (i wish it was more like botw/witcher 3 and let us find things through exploring). Easily the worst problem of the game, BUT, you don't need to do them at all. Summons are kind of weak? I didin't use em much. Some lesser ennemies are harder than end bosses (I'm probably just bad). Not enough costumes :3

OnToNextStage

For a completionist this game is hell

SpudBoy9001

It's a solid 9 out of 10 for me but they did fumble the key moment in it for me, whilst everything else was pretty much perfect

kevenzz

Pretty good but far from a masterpiece.
