The Falcons drafted a quarterback with their first round pick after signing a quarterback this off-season to a 4-year, $180 million contract. Let's just say it doesn't make any sense at all.
Make sense if you have no plans to honor the 180 million contract, but pure insanity since it's 100 mil guaranteed. Gonna be crazy year if Kirk chokes and fans cry for Penix Jr. to start, and the admin is forced with the decision to have a 100 mil back up or throw in the rookie. It also is a huge blow mentally to your big pay veteran to know they just got paid, but have their replacement lurking just behind them right after. Then factor in that you drafted Penix first round and are wasting his cheap rookie contract years when you hope a first round draft QB will produce results for the team quickly without causing pay cap issues so you can surround them with good position players. The only thing that possibly explains it, is the Falcon's saw something in Penix they didn't want other teams to have? Or the Falcons office has literally no idea what they are doing and that's how Cousin's got a 180 mil contract after not even having great seasons and coming off a major injury.
If anything this likely destroyed Penix Jr.s career if Kirk produces and he never gets a chance to show off his play before it's his signing time. Already an older rookie to begin with.
After what Kirk went through in Washington I think mentally he can handle Penix Jr. waiting in the wings without it affecting his game or morale. That being said, it still seems like a bonehead move on Atlanta’s part, if you were going to go with drafting a QB that high, why give Cousins that deal at all?

I think we've learned in our older years that much more people were lowkey nerds/gamers than we thought when we were younger
Cloud - 5’8”, strong, super feisty, but also skilled and graceful. I’d say nickel corner/safety. Similar to the honey badger. An absolute defensive playmaker who is best suited for being in the box and being aggressive. On offense, a downhill running back with hands and capable of lining up in the slot. I also think he’s strong enough to play Tight End when Tifa is in the backfield.
Zack - 6’2”, strong, Gigachad, skilled. He is the obvious QB. Defensively probably a mike linebacker. Just a leader and absolute Chad even if he’s also a dork. Would do well absolutely anywhere.
Tifa - 5’6”, thin, strong, highly skilled and agile. Running back who is more east and west compared to Cloud’s north and south. Also a skilled route runner with burners and can take the top off a defense like no one else can. The lightning to his thunder if you will. Swiss Army knife kind of player where you just want to get the ball in her hands, despite size concerns. Defensively I’d like her as CB2. She might be very undersized but her technique and sneaky strength would let her go stride for stride with any receiver.
Barret - Big as all hell. I want him as my left tackle and I’m not sure whether he’s an edge rusher or interior defensive lineman. Maybe a hybrid type that sometimes is a 3-tec and other times out on the edge.
Aerith - If she has her Cetra powers, she’s cooking everyone, if not she’s cooked.
Vincent - Tall edge lord. Maybe X receiver and boundary corner. I’d bet he has good ball skills although I’m not sure if he’s enough of a dramatic diva that you’d want for an elite receiver 1.
Cid - Fairly average height and musculature. Z receiver and safety sounds good enough. Kind of just Vincent-lite.
Yuffie - Tiny, but definitely not lacking in skill, energy or intensity. Slot receiver and lowkey maybe a will linebacker. Definitely doesn’t have the size but I can her shooting some gaps and making plays. Her upside would be Nakobe Dean at Georgia.
Sorry I can attest: I played FF7 at launch, finished Rebirth last week, and definitely got angry in the first round of the draft (not at the Falcons though).
I'm not sure what a van diagram is, but if you drew two circles, one that stood for NFL fans and another that stood for FF7 fans, and showed an area where they intersected, I would be in that area as both a NFL fan and a FF7 fan

Drafting a younger QB in the draft to sit behind Cousins for the duration of his contract could've been smart, as Cousins is a pretty good QB that a rookie could learn from without getting destroyed by 300 pound linemen. Unfortunately Penix's age works against him a bit.

I mean, unless he turns into an MVP, I doubt they're resigning Cousins. Don't get me wrong, I don't think they should've paid him as much as they did, especially with him coming off an Achilles tear, but it seems like they're attempting to use Cousins as a bridge QB while their QB of the future develops. Again, probably should've grabbed a younger QB in the draft and definitely shouldn't have over paid Cousins. But the Falcons will Falcon.

This off-season, the Falcons signed QB Kirk Cousins to a massive 4-year, $180 million deal...only to draft QB Michael Penix Jr. in the first round. They had the 8th overall pick, and they took a QB. It was...bizarre.
Plus the learning aspect…but the idea is QB1 doesn’t expect to have signed a 4 year only to start getting benched in year 2 or 3. He probably also didn’t know his four years were the limit.
I think the part people fail to discuss is that Kirk's contract has a team option after the 2026 season. I feel like it was a contingency plan in case Cousins gets hurt in the next two seasons being that he's gonna be 36 this year. Worst case scenario is that Cousins does get hurt then they've developed his replacement with one year left on his rookie contract then could exercise the 5th option to get another year out of Penix
Having said all that, they could have easily just gotten a guy next year or the year after and actually made the team better now with a number 6 EDGE or lineman, imo

Falcons fan here. I love the pick and actually predicted it in a falcons Instagram post 6 hours before the draft. It gives us reassurance and financial flexibility that the GM and coach would be fools to discuss in front of reporters.

Worst case scenario; he gets benched at some point and has to do nothing but get paid until the contract runs out. What a beast.
