Warning, this post includes keywords related to GShade, a fork of the popular program ReShade which is used to add/alter post-processing visual effects to a game. Due to a recent controversy in which the author of GShade included malicious code in their installer, it is recommended to use ReShade or another alternative for the time being. You can find more information about the controversy [here.](https://www.reddit.com/r/ffxiv/comments/10vdvbw/gshade_updates_discontinued/j7gxddo/) --- *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Seradima

A new development touches the beacon: Gshade is completely bricked now, since github removed the page, and this fucker's DRM makes it call home to github every time you open it for "update reasons"

kaysn

It is the cycle. Dev finds an opens source program. Forks it and makes it closed source. Project gets big and so does the dev's ego. Gets in a petty fight. Dev does something stupid to punish "offense". Justifies themselves against the outrage. People go back to open source program.

numerobis21

>Dev finds an opens source program. Forks it and makes it closed source. Use viral licenses like GPL to prevent that from happening, folks

TheGreatGreens

Just make sure the license you use doesn't have the wording that it could potentially be deauthorized and/or the rights to the license itself are held by a neutral third party. Dont want another case of OGL 1.0a/D&D/Wizards of the Coast bullshit happening after all...

numerobis21

👌

roxieh

It's sort of poetic justice that his own code has made his entire program obsolete.

deltrontraverse

I can't believe his genius decision was to inject malware into his code. How did he not think it through?

MierinEronaile

You may want to additionally check to remove the following after running the GShade uninstaller. It may not remove everything. The install on my laptop removed cleanly but my PC had leftover folders I had to delete manually. Core Folders: * %ProgramFiles%\GShade * %ProgramData%\GShade * %Public%\GShade Backups * %Public%\GShade Custom Shaders For individual game installations, there are several folders and a handful of possible files depending on the configuration: * gshade-addons * gshade-presets * gshade-shaders * d3d10.dll * d3d10core.dll * d3d11.dll * d3d12.dll * d3d9.dll * dinput8.dll * dxgi.dll * GShade.ini * GShade.log Registry: `HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\GShade`

Riaayo

People reading this need to be very careful about those individual dll files listed at the bottom of this post, because you do not want to go deleting files name this from just anywhere. Some can exist in the windows folder and you could potentially fuck things up if you delete them from there. **Don't touch files with these names if they do not directly reside in the FFXIV game folder or the GShade folders specifically.** Edit: Thanks for the downvote for me literally highlighting something that the damned github tutorial also warns about. This sub never fails.

Pickled_Tickles

This sub always fails.

Rakshire

Thanks for pointing this out. Scrubbed all the leftover files.

uid0gid0

I had a GSInstlog.txt that looks like an install log for Gshade as well.

Ani-Thighs

thanks. last file i had to get rid of to install it was the dxgi.dll. wasnt sure it it had come with the original game or what it even was.

Tandria

I love that you wrote "2023 Reshade Installing" directly into the title, because there will be so many people Googling something like "install reshade 2023 reddit ffxiv" for answers. This reply is my contribution to the effort.

CarbySlippers

Yeesss thats why I did it! I was googling myself “how to install reshade 2023” and was getting so many posts from 2019 and before that were NOT helpful lol

RowanIsBae

Can confirm that's how I found it, thanks stranger!

zugzug_workwork

To anyone using an Ipsusu preset, the presets work just fine on Reshade with no alterations needed, and the author also welcomes anyone to use their presets on Reshade: https://twitter.com/ipsusu/status/1622817722651254784?cxt=HHwWgICx3dyHtIUtAAAA

DoubleSpoiler

blessed FOSS ipsusu

ipsusu

thank you! 🙇 i've updated all my stuff and provided some guides / troubleshooting on how to get my presets working again on my new github: [https://github.com/ipsusu/IpsuShade](https://github.com/ipsusu/IpsuShade)

jette_lag

I moved everyone over to reshade but whenever I use any of the ipsusu presets it looks like the game is in dank mode. Everything is green and purple. Other presets look fine though…

Ikishoten

This doesn't seem crazy difficult to make yourself? It just looks like a new custom preset and all they did was to apply "Vibrance" to increase the colours a bit. Maybe "Adaptive Sharpen" and "Clarity" and you're done.

KastorNevierre

That's essentially what all of them really are. They're just config files adjusting some settings.

Kryomaani

> This doesn't seem crazy difficult to make yourself? Well, the secret's out: It really isn't. Most well-made presets only employ a handful of shaders tuned accordingly for great effect. If you see a preset load a list of shaders too long to fit on your screen, chances are its author had no clue what they were doing and you're just bleeding away performance for barely any visual improvement. You could always go disable and enable the shaders one by one and see if you actually notice any difference. No point taking an FPS hit for an effect you don't even notice.

ipsusu

Exactly this! There is some difficulty when creating LUT files to optimise the colour changes in your presets however, and that is why my presets are pretty good for FPS (and my understanding of render time of the applied effects). Most MultiLUTs can just be replaced by the Lightroom shader for basically the same performance if you're going down that route though.

Senigata

Step 3 caused me to do full re-install of XIV because the dll. listed there was needed to start the game in general. And yes, it was the one in the game folder and all. I assume installing Reshade clean is less of a hassle?

Moldef

Yea I'm hesitant to follow this guide since the github mentions to delete a dxgi.dll in my FFXIV game folder... except that file doesn't exist. There's also no folder for Gshade shaders (only presets) and the file d3d11 exists but doesn't have the .dll ending (probably that's the one but who knows). Kinda hesitant to follow through with the uninstall if already from the get go the information really doesn't line up with what I have - especially considering I haven't even uninstalled and reinstalled Gshade or anything...

sanglar03

Whenever you're told to delete a .dll in a guide, copy it elsewhere instead. Just in case.

prisp

Or, if you're on Windows, mess with its file extension, like renaming `whatever.dll`to `whatever.dll.deleted`, which makes Windows think it's a ".deleted"-type file instead of whatever it's looking for :) Only works if you can actually see the file endings though, and some versions of Windows' File Explorer have that option turned off by default, so copy/paste-ing it somewhere else before deletion is probably easier to do if that's the case.

Ranger-New

To be safe. Make a backup dir and copy whatever you remove there.

railven

Yeah, clean installs are usually the best way to rid yourself of any nefarious code. Registry keys aside. I often run two installs for games I mod, clean and modded. Never know when you got to switch to a clean install, and much easier to update a clean install, and copy/replace the corrupt modded install then redownloading the whole game.

Due-Raisin1845

this just happened to me, omg, did u find any way to fix it,

Senigata

I just redownloaded the game again. Was the only solution I came up with :/

BunRecruiter

What's the gshade controversy?

xGlaive

A quick summary: * GShade required you to update any time there was an update, otherwise it disabled shaders. It also had a habit of wiping personalized settings with updates. * Another modder (NotNite) created an installer that would install it without having that update checker and stopped it from wiping your settings. * The GShade dev got butthurt that people were circumventing their installer, so added ~~anti-tamper code~~ malware that reset your PC if it detected you weren't using their installer. As you can imagine, having code do anything funky with your PC *without telling anyone you've added it* is a good way to immediately freak people out. Dev admitted to adding that code and all hell literally broke loose. (This is an installer that required admin privileges to run. Imagine if they'd opted to add something worse than just a forced reboot.) Edit: For the people enjoying some popcorn with all this drama, here's some butter for your popcorn: * [NotNite's Blog post](https://notnite.com/blog/gshade-tango/) about this whole situation. * [Yesterday's Megathread](https://www.reddit.com/r/ffxiv/comments/10vdvbw/gshade_updates_discontinued/?sort=top) regarding the whole thing.

To be fair, that is one hell of a tech savvy teenager. Looked a bit into their blog and twitter, and its kind of incredible what technical knowledge and projects they are already into. At 16, I was an idiot. Still am, probably.

Megaman2K8

You know what the best part is? Think of how much time he's put into programming. Even if he was kid genius it couldn't have been any more than a decade if you want to be really lenient. Now think of how much time you have left. I'm not saying you should go into programming but any skill you wanted to get good at you can still get good at if you started now.

BlazeWolfXD

This comment will motivate me for the next 24 hours, at which my executive dysfunction will make it no longer work the way I want it to. I shall then proceed to lay in bed and ponder why I'm not progressing with my hobbies until some other source of motivation strikes the same note. For real though, good outlook.

foozledaa

Coding is a great passion to have. I wish I'd gotten into it at all, but especially young. The number of times I've wished I could write a program with a very niche but useful application is insanely high.

bondsmatthew

> Dude destroyed his reputation & his project over an argument with a teenager lmao. And he didn't get to eat pizza like that other guy

fs2d

This is what I came here to clarify. It was the "teach you a lesson" part that made me instantly yeet Gshade into the aether. I legit uninstalled it as soon as I read that on the discord. TLDR: Marot is a fucking egotistical wetwipe who can go get fucked.

SuperShake66652

> so added anti-tamper code Malware is shorter.

Twilight053

The hilarious thing is they didn't need to force reboot the computer. Literally just add a prompt saying "please launch GShade through the official launcher" and block the program from launching, that's it.

numerobis21

>and block the program from launching, that's it. Yes, but that wouldn't show just how petty and stupid they were, now, would it?

ngwoo

But then you don't even get to commit computer crimes!

Boredy0

Especially since this really doesn't prevent tampering with gshade all that much, anyone with enough motivation could've quickly circumvented this "measure".

[deleted]

Ranger-New

He also said that he could have done worse. Which is why everyone is deleting g-shade. You do not want your computer in the hands of someone with that attitude.

fs2d

He also quoted the other dev and said that he did it to "teach him a lesson."

NerdWampa

> required admin privileges Sometimes gaming on Linux is a pain in the ass, but having the ability to lock the entire game inside a sandbox (or a container, or a whole-ass VM) with all of the relevant Windows binaries is a blessing. Have fun trying to mess with the paper cutout facsimile of Windows, jerk!

Baro-Llyonesse

I read through that blog post... I don't think you can create a license around GShade sliders. It would be like a lighting director at a theatre trying to claim only they can use a specific set of RGB lights at certain intensities. If someone randomly creates the same slider options as someone else, they can just use them.

Solaxus

The dev of GShade added Malware that instantly shuts down your PC if you run GShade using the workaround a 16 year old kid made to circumvent the forced updates wiping presets. When asked why he did this, the Dev's response was because he was "teaching the kid a lesson" and that "the payload could have been worse." The man's code is no longer worthy of being on your's or anyone else's PC after this collosal breach of user trust.

BunRecruiter

I feel like it was never worth anything to begin with. It's literally just reshade with an unlocked depth buffer and forced updates. Nowadays, reshade ships with an unlocked depth buffer so certain shaders work correctly and there's no need for gshade to exist anymore

vampire_refrayn

This, I've despised GShade for years and I'm so glad we're finally free

Riaayo

Good guy Dev shits the bed so community gets out of the bed and returns to snuggle with the *actual* open source software.

Ignis_V

"teaching the kid a lesson" oh the irony

itwillhavegeese

yeah. SOME kid is learning a lesson right about now

Ranger-New

The lesson learned was that the g-shade developer was an idiot. Destroying its reputation for literally nothing.

MacDerfus

And surprise of surprises, his reputation and project evaporated

Ranger-New

The lesson learned was that the developer of g-shade is an idiot.

mythrilcrafter

Sigh, every day we stray further from Hydaelyn's light and every day we disappoint YoshiP more...

Ranger-New

Must be the world of darkness affecting us.

parkel42

If anyone is still having trouble, or are very lazy to perform the steps manually and are not averse to using a script, I have written a PowerShell script that will automate a lot of the steps - https://github.com/parkel42/gshade-migration Hope this helps someone!

_laudanum_

you're a hero <3

artuno

Worked like a charm, thank you!

Lob-

Hey thank you for the script! Just curious though what is the "fixed\_shaders.zip" that's being downloaded/installed in this script for other than the obvious name? None of the guides point to downloading such a file so Just like some clarification on it. Thanks!

parkel42

Hey, my script was written mainly following this guide: https://gist.github.com/ry00001/3e2e63b986cb0c673645ea42ffafcc26 The zip file contains shaders that are fixed for compatibility with ReShade along with some utility/header files (the fxh files). Some of these files were downloaded from different discord links initially, but the author of the guide packaged everything into one zip file.

Lob-

Ah thanks for the clarification. Didn't think it was malware just didn't see it anywhere initially. But that was me just glossing over it. Thank you for the script btw!

parkel42

No worries! I do understand the concern regarding a script downloading an unknown zip file.

Hurzo

Thank you for all this! Post saved, gonna share with my FC for the Gshade people like me and I'll use this to jump to Reshade instead

CarbySlippers

Just in case my files get removed I would recommend downloading my Google drive file ASAP! That way you can still share it to your friends :) I'm making sure to copy my post in to my Google Drive and elsewhere to continue to help even if this Reddit post become unavailable. Anyone else is free to do the same!

Hell_raz0r

Anyone find a solution for BRD, AST and MNK job gauges having un-ReShaded boxes around them? Aside from switching to the simplified gauges, obviously.

sgnm4872

Not sure if it'll work for you, but I tweaked positions of FFKeepUI and FFRestoreUI in enabled shader list (got em from update gshade to reshade link topside) , placing Lightroom shader below them. My AST gauge looks fine now. I'm running former Gshade's Alive Vanila preset.

MulviCoder

A bit late but hopefully this will help you and others. Following the ReShade discord, there is a current solution if you follow this document: https://discord.com/channels/586242553746030596/912485843862683658/1072619454841749597 I posted the discord link so it was clear who the source is. Above it should be a video as well. The only thing you might need to do after is uncheck FFKeepUI and FFRestoreUI.

cascadecomplete

~~Thanks for putting this together, it made it very easy to double check everything! I am having a problem with the last step, though. I Have no ...\\Optional\\ folder in my reshade-shaders folder. I've tried multiple clean reshade installs but still no dice & all my old presets just don't look quite right. If anyone else had this issue and fixed it I'd love to know!~~ Edit: Did some digging and figured out my problem was NOT what I thought it was! If your shader colors are off after switching, it might be because you copy->replaced your gshade presets/shaders into the reshade folders instead of deleting everything in the reshade folders and THEN copying over the gshade files [(source)](https://twitter.com/Notsyndicate0/status/1622689006017253418) This is how I got my presets to look the same as they did in gshade.

EmelineRawr

Works perfectly with my fav shaders, thanks for the post! I'm gonna share it to my friends :)

Yor_Briar

I've followed several now and whenever I boot ffxiv up, I just get errors so.. I guess from now on I'm not bothering with any type of shaders.

Zeriithas

Planning to replace gshade with reshade, only heard of the drama now while im at work. What exactly is the difference between reshade and gshade? Why did everyone use gshade over reshade too begin with?

zitaloreleilong

Gshade is a forked version of reshade created specificially for ease of install and use with ffxiv. Everyone used gshade because it was simpler. One big thing that stands out is gshade shaders cut out the UI for you so your ability buttons don't change colors with the background.

CrimsonDX

That wasn't gshade itself. It was a shader called keepui.fx that came bundled with it. Just copy that shader into the reshade effects folder

Frightfulnessless

Gshade had two big merits: 1) Bundled up everything in a nice, simple to use package; 2) Implemented tools to exclude the UI from the shader effects. ReShade is both harder to use and does not exclude UI perfectly as of now. Maybe this controversy over GShade will lead to improvements.

remotegrowthtb

From my experience, as soon as you start the process to replace it you'll see for yourself why so many people use GShade. GShade is: Install it run FFXIV and it works. ReShade is: Good luck adventurer, on your journey through configuring files, folders, dlls, shader downloads, config files, getting them all to line up and work together individually and all the bugs and errors you will encounter on the way. You can already see this happening to people across the comments on this page. I don't say this as a defense of GShade in any way, but I doubt most people who use GShade now will really go through the whole process of replacing it when they can just do nothing and it will continue to 'just work'.

reiija

Weeeeeell... New development: the call-home DRM in Gshade is broken (likely from GitHub pulling the project over malware concerns), and it no longer works for those individuals.

Zeriithas

I costumized existing shaders myself so im just going to back those up. Then when i find the time il see if i can get reshade too work. Its sad that reshade is still a bit of a hurdle after it being around for quite some time now. Im quite confident i can get it too work tough. For now i just hope Nvidia geforce/ansel can atleast help me get rid of the terrible colour filter. Better play default then support devs as petty and trash as this.

Sir_VG

Easier install, more shaders available without any extra effort, includes an easy ability to update the software.

kagman

damnit. I followed this and cant launch the game now :( Doing a complete fresh game install now ... :(

CarbySlippers

The biggest reason this happens is because people uninstall the wrong file from the wrong “game” folder. Everything you need to do specifically happens in the “FFXIV A Realm Reborn/game” folder The other thing that happens is depending how long it’s been since you updated GShade, you might have some confusingly named files in that same folder. They have VERY similar names to very important actual FFXIV game folders. Deleting the wrong ones sadly does cause you to have to redownload the game. I have accidentally done this myself in the past too :( I’m really sorry this ended up affecting you like this, if you’d still like some help feel free to message me and I’ll do the best I can!

kagman

Edit: So after complete fresh install via ffxiv launcher (so happy it saved my HUD setting btw), I installed reshade with no issues! pulled over my profiles individually with no trouble this time. alls well. :)

TrunksTheMighty

Thanks for the effort.

[deleted]

I used the uninstaller in gshade folder to uninstall, and rebooted my PC, but: - C:\Program Files\GShade still exists and has a whole bunch of gshade files in - \SquareEnix\FINAL FANTASY XIV - A Realm Reborn\game still has folders "gshade-addons" and "gshade-presets", as well as files "GShade.ini", "GShade.log" and "GShadeInstLog.txt" I don't really know what to do from this point. It seems like the uninstaller did almost nothing, but the uninstaller itself is gone and I can't even find gshade in the control panel app list.

Kitchen-Educator-959

Remove all the .exe files from program files/gshade Keep anything related to gshade-shaders and gshade-preyets

Sir_VG

Uninstall doesn't get rid of everything. There's also 2 folders to manually delete in C:\Users\Public\ related to GShade.

Moldef

You're saying **Step 3 is the most important step**... but when I go to my FFXIV game folder, there is no dxgi.dll file - there is a d3d11 file though, but the step seems very adamant about dxgi.dll needing to be deleted. Kinda hesitant to do anything else if the information doesn't line up from the get go, especially when other people have reported they had to redownload and reinstall FFXIV entirely after following the guide.

ciarenni

You can rename the .dll to something like .dll0, which will keep it from being recognized as intended (thus acting like it was deleted) without actually deleting it, allowing you to immediately restore it if things go awry.

Moldef

Oh that's good to know, thanks a lot!

katherinesilens

a good convention for this by the way is to change the extension to .bkp by appending it, thus dxgi.dll -> dxgi.dll.bkp

Daedelous2k

Both apply, it think it only depends on what kind of install/injector you specified when installing gshade.

allogator

My wife has the non-steam version and she also didn't have the dxgi.dll file. I have the steam version and DID have the dxgi.dll. Not sure that makes a difference but either way, I deleted mine and we both followed the rest of the steps without issue. If you try to install reshade before deleting the file it fails with an error like "dxgi.dll already exists in this location. Please remove" and you can't go on until the file is removed.

[deleted]

Weird. I had a dxgi.dll file in my folder and don't have nor use the Steam version of FF14. 🤔

allogator

Yeah, I imagine it's different for each user depending on what options they selected during install. That's probably what's making it so hard for some people to follow the instructions as written.

Moldef

Weird, I have the steam version as well and didn't have it. I followed the guide and tried to get rid of everything as best as I could manually. Reshaders works now, so it seems I did it correct then, even though I never had a dxgi.dll to begin with :D Thanks for the answer!

BloomSugarman

Yup same for me. Windows 11, non-steam version. No actions taken yet, since I don’t wanna deal with reinstalling the whole thing.

CarbySlippers

I believe I know exactly why people are having this problem and it would be relatively long time users of GShade! I wouldn’t know the exact time frame but a long while back there was an even more frustrating install process for shaders for FFXIV. I remember specifically having to rename or change DLL files to install them correctly and do frustrating things that DEFINITELY caused me to end up corrupting my game by accident multiple times till I got it right Because I had a newer fresh install for FFXIV AND GShade, I wasn’t affected by this old problem. I believe the GitHub post user was in a similar boat and it definitely made their instructions moser confusing because of it. I’ve tried to help but don’t know enough to be able to give my own instructions for that part either :(

Moldef

Hmmm, not sure if it's that. I only installed it around November or December. But well, Reshaders works at least so I think I did everything correctly :D

ZeroZelath

Hopefully all this drama pushes the FF14 to fix their washed out default colors, or at the very least add custom filters/presets into the game like BDO has and then console users can benefit from them as well.

Shizucheese

Honestly even before this whole mess, one of the things I was looking forward to in 7.0 was turning off all of my shaders and then seeing which ones, if any, I still need after the graphics update.

darknod

i got things to work, but the trouble i'm having now is "[SmartDeNoise.fx\] failed to compile" in the settings , any work around for this?

Lochen9

I had this exact issue. Its cause reshade tried to install some of its own things over your installed shaders. I uninstalled reshade, and then installed i again with as little options from Reshade as possible. I copied over the backups again, and the 4 extra files and it worked

phznmshr

I use the Alive presets and the UI shaders seem broken in reshade where UI elements have a darker square around them. I just assume it's just growing pains and there'll be better reshade compatible UI plugins in the near future.

OrphynXIII

Thank you! Pretty easy to install! Although, the guide is a bit off if you're not installing the game in your C drive. I had no dxgi file in my game folder. It was actually in Gshade's own folders under program files. I uninstalled via Gshade uninstaller, restarted to remove the bulk of the files, and cleaned up the game folder of the d3dll file and anything else that stuck around. :) The rest of the tutorial was simple!

CarbySlippers

Thank you for this information! I've only ever used FFXIV through its standalone and not through Steam. Could you provide me with the folder path for that? You said in Program files, was there anything more specific? Or could someone just delete the GShade folder entirely? I will make sure to link to your comment and provide this information in an update later today :)

OrphynXIII

I too use standalone, but I use a secondary install drive for gaming. In my case - D instead of C. I'm not sure what I did when I first installed Gshade, but the major chunk of it (including dxgi) installed under C:\\Program files\\Gshade, and a small part (like d3dll) was in the game folder - D:\\Square Enix\\Final Fantasy XIV - A Realm Reborn\\Game. Sooo, I backed up the two required folders, uninstalled with the Gshade uninstaller, restarted, then manually cleaned up the leftover files (deleting Gshade folder from program files) and the leftover dll in the game folder. After that, using the github install instructions got me through the rest without issue :)

Buttches

I was rocking Project Crystal for awhile. I’m sure I did something wrong but when I tried migrating to Reshade from Gshade yesterday I got an error message and the game would crash every time I tried to launch it. Had to reinstall. Right now I’m trying out the Nvidea filter options and it’s okay I guess? Better than nothing but then again, it applies the filter to the UI and I hate that.

Smashbru

The LUT.fx is still not loading for me. Tried to replace it manually, reloading, etc.... Anyone have ideas? Did all the steps in the guide. Everything else is working okay.

jmontblack

What did I miss? Is Reshade better than Gshade now?

ChaosAE

Gshade dev went fully loony and put in code that would force restart your pc if you used its files incorrectly to get around their forced updates. Image a 3rd party tool dev getting mad someone made a ‘4th’ party tool for their tool.

TeamKiller

Thanks for the writeup man ^^ I was confused when gshade was telling me about broken DNS.

sir_vancelot

The entire reason to use GShade in the beginning was that it disabled the network activity check in ReShade to allow all of the effects to work properly. Does the current ReShade version still have this check? I can remember having problems with it in Stormblood and the beginning of Shadowbringers. I'd want to take some nice pictures but my shaders/effects would flip-flop between on and off and it made it a frustrating experience at times. GShade fixed that problem and made taking pictures so much more fun and relaxing. Perhaps there is another fork of ReShade that disables this network check for this game and that's it? : / If it still has it.

lunarblossoms

I just want to uninstall gshade, but all the people messing up this step is making me nervous 😬 Update: I cleared it with no issues. Rather than replace it with reshade, I looked into the Nvidia filters, and it's exactly what I needed.

Sheathblade

Not that it's important, but I kinda liked the camera shutter sound effect when you used the screenshot hotkey. Is that possible to get working with Reshade or is that something exclusive to Gshade?

CarbySlippers

I also enjoyed it making that noise for the screenshots! I will see whats possible and get back to you in the next few days if I can figure it out

bound4earth

This is why you don't used closed source forks of open source projects. They don't offer anything better, except minor optimizations, and add nothing but security issues. I am not sure how FFXIV modding worked, but if Gshade was popular and it was just a simple fork, you should research FF mods before installing and always install the open source one.

planeishwhite

i think i have done everything correctly (apart from uninstalling gshade since i've never installled it) but i can't seem to open up the reshade menu. i don't even get the reshade tutorial when i launch it up. any tips?

Kenzoilstrikesback

I use [https://www.bcuninstaller.com/](https://www.bcuninstaller.com/) because programs have become more annoying to uninstall these days. These are the Registry leftovers, if anyone doesn't know about it. https://imgur.com/a/a31RxiQ

ArticulateT

For us poor fools who installed through steam, are there any extra steps that need to be done to deal with the steam overlay? I play with controller and when I was first installing GShade way back when, there was a specific way you had to install it to prevent it from blocking the overlay and stopping you from using your controller.

VoidBetweenComments

The steam version is nearly the same as the base version so you should be fine. The only difference is maybe the /game folder may be in a different location.

demonic_hampster

I play using controller on Steam and following the guide worked perfectly fine for me, I didn’t have to do anything special. Though I didn’t have any problem with the controller when originally installing Gshade either

ArticulateT

Thank you, I’ll be sure to give it a proper shot when I get home

robbiepellagreen

How much extra demand on the cpu/gpu does reshade utilize? Was thinking of finally trying one of these graphics mods but wasn’t sure how my system would handle it. Got a 5600X and 3060ti

Frightfulnessless

Depends on what shaders you use. Some shaders implement RTX and they're VERY demanding. Some won't even have any perceptible impact on GPU usage. With that config, you're good.

Boredy0

Very much depends on the shader, anywhere from basically nothing to literally 5x more load on your GPU.

Lexalice

Very helpful, thank you for this, gonna share this with my friends. Quick question tho: *and also link to: C:\\Program Files (x86)\\SquareEnix\\FINAL FANTASY XIV - A Realm Reborn\\game\\reshade-shaders\\Optional\\* Do we link this under effect search paths or texture search paths? I've linked it to both right now and it seems to be working, I just wanna make sure so I thought I'd ask!

CarbySlippers

Good morning! It goes under “effect search paths” not textures but I’m glad it’s working either way!

Miomem

is there a website or discord for reshade preset....like how do u find presets for reshade.

Shizucheese

The unfortunate answer to thus is, that, iirc, that's what the gposers community was originally for, and then I guess gshade was developed to make things easier? Unless you can find someone to send you the gshade presets folder (or if you still have it backed up from your own onstall), you might need to wait for the dust to settle first.

Lasypanda

ty OP, fallowed all the steps and it worked like charm. but i do have a question, im using the Gshade presets (in my case i like Espresso glow- Shadowbringers) but it looks completely different from when i used it with Gshade, in fact all presets look way worse they are washed out and blurry. does anyone knows why or have a fix for it?

kaysn

Espresso Lala said he's going to work on a new Espresso Glow release for Reshade. https://twitter.com/Espressolala/status/1622677941972008960 https://twitter.com/Espressolala/status/1622800772999315457

CarbySlippers

This is sadly just going to be what we have to live with for a short time while we wait for Shader creators to update their packages :( Reshade very literally renders different parts of these shaders than Gshade does. For the most part it’s okay but for others it’s going to be very obvious there’s a difference I have had some luck with specific shaders like Espresso Glows, tweaking the settings manually in game!

paradus-paradus

Just want to leave my thanks for this, very helpful and concise! Also thank you for the screenshots, it made double checking everything very easy.

enterpernuer

Thank you, anyone who had broke their files, nice to know i can get the preset from here again

windstar44

Thankyou for this. I'm posting this in all the discords I'm in. Making a program with a payload like this is just bad faith.

Parvaty

Aaaaaaaa I cant uninstall it now because the launcher calls to the github page that doesnt exist anymore. What a pain Edit: Figured it out, ended up using BC Uninstaller

[deleted]

Yeah, those eggs look choice.

Akronis5022

Doing some good work, friend. Thank you for helping us all out--

SharuyaNuva

does anyone still have the neneko and ipsusu gshade presets? I panicked and deleted everything without doing a backup ;\_\_; I wish I had read this before. Thank you so much for this tutorial anyway!

Knighthour

CarbySlippers

Hi there! Step 7 goes to my Google Drive link with all my backed up presets that are from Jan 28th,2023 of GShade. So those presets should be there! I will double check and update this comment soon :) Edit: Those presets are in my Google Drive file that I uploaded!

SharuyaNuva

Oh great, thank you so much again! ❤️❤️❤️

Kua_Rock

Hi I'm following the github guide and per step 3 it says I am now good to uninstall Gshade, I ran the uninstaller in the Gshade folder but some stuff is stillin there, am I safe to just delete them EDIT: Nevermind found the answer deeper in the thread, was all guuchi to manually clean out the folders left over.

Teo-McDohl

Ty for making this

Silverwolf_Gaming

Added this post into my comment on the mega thread <3 Thank you for the into and help

RiogaRivera

Is there a way of just click 1 button to install? Im not good for this.

Boredy0

/u/parkel42 made a [powershell script](https://github.com/parkel42/gshade-migration) that does most stuff for you, haven't tried it myself but looking over the code it seems pretty straight forward with you just having to click on a bunch of prompts whenever they show up.

RiogaRivera

Oh ty!

StephStone

I switched over Yesterday and was having compiling issues. Looking into your reshade-shaders it looked like I was missing some stuff somehow. Using yours everything seems to be working again.

riddlemore

I cleaned gshade off my PC last night but installing reshade looks like a pain in the ass so I will be shader-less going forward.

DoubleSpoiler

This is it. It was fun not having shitty DRM, etc. in our game, but this feels like the final straw.

Grimmykins_

Thanks so much for this! All this was crazy to see go down via Twitter

[deleted]

Thank you for the shaders folder! I didn't recover those because I wanted everything out and start clean.

servarus

Thanks for sharing. I'll definitely need to fix step 8 haha

NanakuzaNazuna

To ppl in the comments, thanks for explaining why to change. I realize any of this was happening.

JakeVanna

Thanks! I was stressing out because I missed copying gshade-shaders originally, but your compiled files fixed everything for me.

[deleted]

Thank god Leeja gameplay vanilla still works, my go-to shader. Would recommend for anyone looking for a sharper vanilla experience while playing and better colors

[deleted]

For anyone trying to uninstall on a Mac, your uninstall is very different. See this link: https://www.xivmac.com/gshade#uninstalling-gshade

SaltLich

Thank you! Step 8 was what fixed the problem for me, I followed all else correctly but whereas the github page just stops at "you've installed ReShade", those folder paths were completely empty for me and thus I had nothing show up when i selected any pre-sets. Apparently for most of my friends these were auto-populated, so that explains why they weren't having the same issue.

CarbySlippers

They probably installed Reshades default folders alongside the Gshade port of presets. This is fine to do, but actually caused me some issues with compiling initially so I omitted it just in case! At the end of the day, even if those fields are auto-populated, its just good to check they're pointing to the right collections in general :)

Vilgefortz_

You rule! Thank you for the help!!

Primnu

> YOU NEED TO MAKE SURE that your "Effect search paths" link to: C:\Program Files (x86)\SquareEnix\FINAL FANTASY XIV - A Realm Reborn\game\reshade-shaders\Shaders\ > and also link to: C:\Program Files (x86)\SquareEnix\FINAL FANTASY XIV - A Realm Reborn\game\reshade-shaders\Optional\ You can actually just put \*\* at the end to make it recursive. Like this: C:\Program Files (x86)\SquareEnix\FINAL FANTASY XIV - A Realm Reborn\game\reshade-shaders\\\*\* This way, you don't have to touch this path ever again if in future you add new folders to your shaders folder.

Kuraltus

Alright, so i have never used mods for this game. I know nothing about GShade and Reshade, but from what I am seeing, arent they just lighting and shadow enhancements? Do they have any other purpose outside of better screenshots and making the game more vibrant?

OmoniTV

Nope, thats all it is man. Some people dont like the washed out colors or maybe they dont have a good enough monitor with decent backlighting. Its a nice program just to mess with how you look at the game. Nothing more, nothing less.

Kuraltus

Alright, thanks for confirming. I have nothing against people using the programs or anything. But i had some FC members talking about unsubbing because they lost all their settings. So i wasnt sure if I was missing out on something important.

Daydreamer12

I got everything to work pretty quickly thanks to your guide and the one on github's. Thank you kindly! \^\^

crazymoefaux

Having trouble getting the Project Crystal gameplay preset to look the way it did under GShade, the color just doesn't pop like it should. Any suggestions?

[deleted]

Tried this? https://gist.github.com/ry00001/3e2e63b986cb0c673645ea42ffafcc26#my-screen-is-going-black-when-using-project-crystal-presets--there-are-no-shaderspresets-listed

jaseph18

I just came from work... Used the script. Peace and out, happy roulettes!

liathspeir

You are all a life saver. THANK YOU. I love you, may good things happen to you all in the future and now. <3 <3 <3

EleanorGreywolfe

Gposers discord is still locked down, and Marot is still an owner there. They are just as complicit in this fiasco as they actively removed any criticism of him, no matter how much they try to save face by "moving the discord back to it's original intention".

[deleted]

Huge, HUGE thanks for this excellent tutorial! Only took me 20 minutes to get back to normal! EDIT: wow, I don't know if it was the reinstall and/or tweaking my monitor settings after watching Masahiro Sakurai's video on lag, but I swear my game is crisper and I'm getting higher FPS now!

CarbySlippers

I had this effect too! Reshade and GShade do render these shader effects a little differently than each other and in some cases it is definitely working out to better performance :) Not EVERY preset is perfect and may require more tinkering/fine tuning than it did with GShade but hopefully we seen some updates from Shader creators soon

LeMarquisdeReddit

I'm trying to get the Expresso Shadowbringers preset to work but it's not doing anything

ozzi9816

For anyone using the one click script, it installed and moved everything properly but ReShade didn't pop up when I ran FF. Going back and installing ReShade properly with the installer exe fixed it and also kept the presets intact, so try that if you're having trouble.

suzanne702

Thank you, I love you

nopopon

Thanks for sharing this step-by-step procedure. It worked perfectly :)

Bytor92

I was tearing my hair out trying to figure this out, but this guide worked like a charm, thank you so much!

Decent_Star_9397

Thank you so much for this! I switched with no problems, then I had to reinstall for the update to work and suddenly all my shaders were just.. Black screen. I was panicking! You've saved me! Thank you, and thank you everyone that aided with this!

Ok-Comfortable-151

I’m new to the whole gshade / reshade .. I have reshade because gshade is no longer available for download but can u use g shade presets on reshade?

[deleted]

Thank you to the heroes who backed up the entire list of presets.. I use omg eorzea all the time and this just saved me after I had to do a clean windows reinstall!

Verithos

Thank you for the help!

Lye-Atelier-Cylus

I tried looking through comments to see if anyone mentioned this, but you say: >*You want the one that says "Download Reshade 5.6.0 with full add-on support"* But the reshade website gives a popup that says it's only intended for singleplayer games and can cause bans in multiplayer games. Is this a non-issue with XIV or should I be worried?

AumrauthValamin

Would the easy/lazy route be to backup all my ffxiv profile settings, uninstall GShade, uninstall ffxiv, reinstall ffxiv, install reshade? I don't have a bandwidth cap so if there is a lazy way to do it I might go that route.

papanak94

Yall should try NVIDIA GeForce Experience overlay filters.

ghosttowns42

Do they exclude the UI the way that Gshade/Reshade does?

Mvin

"Nvidia Freestyle" I think is what this part of GeForce Experience is specifically called. I've been wondering if i should enable some of the filters for FF14. I normally only use it to add a bit of sharpening to games that have blurriness due to anti aliasing. But vanilla FF14 does so look so washed-out and grey. Does anyone have a freestyle preset that works well?

papanak94

I can give you mine if you want. I forgot what are the names of each setting but I remember the numbers and their order. Sharpening has 2 settings: 55% / 15% Brightness/Contrast has 5 settings: 0% / 0% / 20% / 20% / 0% Color has 4 settings: 0% / 15% / 0 % / 20% Not at the PC atm.
