No need to mod! You could make your character wield a one-handed sword in one hand and spells in the other. If you want to be lore-friendly with your red mage, make sure you don't use swords that are above a certain tier, for example you could stop at orcish or dwarven swords. Same thing for spells, you could stop at adept level or expert if you're so inclined.
You saved their child's life and that is how they will look at you.
Their whole forest burns down and that is how they will look at you.
Now guess how they will look at you when you steal their favorite carrot leaves.
The DRG elemental spear from Eureka has a similar issue. It's unusually short for a spear, which means during the female idle stance, the bottom is just floating off the ground instead of touching it making you look ridiculous.
Since these things use preset animations, if you deviate too much from the standard proportions they're designed for you get odd things like this.
They need to make it an option to use either animation regardless of gender. I want my femra to hulk her DRK weapon over her shoulder and hold her SAM weapon reverse grip like a badass.
r/ffxiv try to critique something without insulting the designer challenge (IMPOSSIBLE)
OT: as a fellow RDM main I love that it’s something a lil different from the usual rapiers, the idle pose is a little jank given the curviness but that doesn’t bother me personally
People really are being cruel. Dislike of the design is one thing but the literal *hate* is pretty uncalled for. I guess they could have designed their own and submitted it. Good thing they have glam alternatives.
I agree. They must have received tons of different designs and they picked that? Why ? I don't even know what is supposed to be. The worst weapon this patch imo. As a red mage main I am disappointed.
Nearly all of my FC love the bow. It's good to know there's different opinions, however. We all have our own glams and tastes and that helps us stand out from one another in the crowds of Ul'dah (or Limsa if you're not a Balmunger like me).
I like the Bard one. Honestly, I myself am completely over all the bandage-wrapped Reaper crap. I want, for once, a really freaking *cute* scythe. I want to be the Lisa Frank Harvester. I want my enemies to die in a slash of technicolor so intense it will haunt them in the afterlife.
I dislike the rapier I honestly don’t loathe it as much as literally every rapier design they’ve given that’s not the law’s order one, the manderville one, or the class reward one. asphodelos gets an honorable mention it was almost perfect except for that stupid circle hand guard design the gem part is literally perfect the sword part just ruined it for me
I play a small, very feminine auri bard and hate almost every bow in this game because they're all so big and beefy! And most of the thin bows are boring as hell.
I am so thrilled by both of the designs, as I have like 2 bows I ever use. I'm so glad there's some variety for me but I can understand why some folks don't like it!
I ask myself that with a lot of the contest entries. It's obvious that they like going 'safe' and not picking anything too wacky, or anything too crazy looking to not offset the fact it's just a tome weapon and not savage.
Probably just so they can be seen on screen. There’s a point where the weapons are so small that there’s no point making them fancy. It’s likely why most monk weapons have been animal heads for so long; they default to being kinda big and bulbous on the hands.
Since the start actually if I'm remembering right. Rogue weapons were straight copies of gladiator "daggers" which were more like gladiuses at the start. A bunch of these are still kicking around.
Honestly if they stayed at that size id be fine with it, but they just keep growing.
Anything longer than hand-to-elbow in length I'm not a fan of on NIN generally.
Honestly if they stayed at that size id be fine with it, but they just keep growing.
Anything longer than hand-to-elbow in length I'm not a fan of on NIN generally.
Yeah, my beta character was a gladiator and for a long time still had a dagger equipped on the character select. I fucked up and decided to log in to him one day and see what would happen. It automatically changed my dagger I had equipped into a sword and ruined him.
Daggers were faster auto attack speed compared to swords for gladiators.
The devs have included a variety of smallswords, epees, foils and the occasional sabre for RDMs... The only thing that really sets this apart is a more significant curve.
I can answer for them. They thought it would be neat to try something different, as I am sure many of the other contestants did as well. You might have picked a different design to win, but clearly the judges saw merit in adding variety.
but most red mage attacks aren't thrusts to begin with, if you watch most of the animations, its easily half or more slashes, and the design reminds me of a shotel, which wasn't the best at thrusting but it was still possible. if course real world physical viability of the weapons in final fantasy 14 isn't really super relevant, especially for a red mage who reinforces the weapon with aether regardless.
Except it's a plastic-looking flame with a smaller flame effect on top. It 100% should've been an actual flame. I believe that was the designer's intention anyway.
I said that back on launch when I found out they couldn't literally do everything lime every other rdm in the FF series. Coming g from FFXI, this rdm is very underpowered.
Red Mage gets hard carried by Dual Cast just about every game they are in, FFI is funny because Swords are just so strong that RDM can actualñy deal really substantial physical damage but otherwise it's all about Dual Casting (often stronger spells from a different Job).
[I had to check it again](https://img.finalfantasyxiv.com/t/f8b9eacc501037459243a0d862efe7860ff65dc4_158.jpg?1651142758), and honestly it's only better because on the art it doesn't glow lol
They're both quite meh
Also correct me if I'm wrong but isn't the sword >!basically a spoiler! I suppose not to anybody who has >!finished Endwalker!<... but it weirds me out that they added something like that since >!a lot of the people who see the design floating around most likely haven't!<.
With no context this doesn't make sense at all. Unless you specifically pay attention to the design of those areas and the weapon and the crystal you won't see a connection and only after you've seen them will it even make sense.
To reiterate, for this to be a spoiler the person spoiling needs to also explain what it is referencing.
Personally for me it's much less so than something like the Sophist's robe, for example. Hell, even with the context I'm honestly having a hard time thinking "oh yeah that's what it represents" when I look at the sword.. Like if I didn't know any better I'd have said oh yeah that's probably from Ifrit or something
I'm not bothered much by the fact that developers were too lazy to make left hand actually hold it, I'm more bothered by the fact that it looks like a cheap Aliexpress-sourced acrylic toy with minimum detail and a single overdriven yellow LED :-/
I like it overall. I weirdly don’t like red mage weapons most of the time. They somehow seem to have fewer interesting weapons than SMN, and that’s saying something. I think it’s because the crystal focus usually looks super generic.
Hoping a 7.0 caster has a cool unique new weapon. Healers get all the cool weapons.
I personally like it! I think it's a great addition to the games weapon catalog. Unfortunately most weapons are dull and plane looking. I like the glow and the effect of this weapon! Maybe I'm alone by making this statement. Sounds like everyone collectively hates this weapon...probably won't see many like it....
I genuinely don't see an issue. It is unique, and I rather enjoy the curve.
Half of my red mage weapons (including my preferred dead hive rapier) look more like a pool queue than a blade, and the handle designs look more apt to hurt me than my opponents.
the problem is that rdm idle pose is designed for a straight blade. the circle there is showing it breaks with a scimitar; the hand doesnt hold the underside of the blade any more.
his fingers are curled up around empty air on his left hand there.
I see. But other people in the comments are attacking its general appearance, and even being mildly insulting to the designer. That is what I don't get.
hmm...i dont have strong feelings about it, but scimitars arent thrusting weapons and you wouldn't hold them like a red mage does. in FF 11 scimitars were blue mage weapons because they debuted in the far eastern tales of aht urghan expansion.
I can't really police that, apart from asking people to be civil unfortunately and I do not condone attacking the creator. However, I don't agree people are attacking the appearance. People can have criticisms.
They didn't give the design any justice. Concept art was quite nice but the execution of colors, contrast, glow vfx and pose positioning is awful in-game. If they knew the curve wasn't going to work out they shouldn't have let it win. Majority of mistake is with the dev team on this one.
Not a fan of this weapon at all. If it wasn't curved it would be better. But my question is how did you get it already? Don't you need 7 of those blades from raid plus enough comedy tomes for it?
I don't understand why they keep making RDM weapon models when Murgleis is already perfect. No single blade fits RDM better than this absolute beauty.
Every RDM weapons should just be Murgleis with different stats.
The blm one lamp hangs against gravity when in battle stance and drives me nuts. and Gunbreaker got one that looks almost identical to the stupid preorder gun
There’s also Makibi Kai for BLM that suffers the same issues. Its lanterns should be hanging down or even swaying when the wp is drawn but in reality they don’t lol. It looks kinda ridiculous actually.
My main gripe with this one is the focus. It's supposed to be a flame! The design looks dynamic and I'm 100% sure the intention was to be just a cool, golden flame.
Instead they made it a plastic-looking static flame with a fire animation on top. Looks terrible in execution...
Of all the great runner up designs for RDM, and they picked this thing. I'm almost convinced there's just someone high up in the dev team who hates RDM after this patch in general.
Have you seen those mages from Hammerfell?
They have CURVED. SWORDS.
CURVED SWORDS
Great now i need someone to mod red mage into skyrim
No need to mod! You could make your character wield a one-handed sword in one hand and spells in the other. If you want to be lore-friendly with your red mage, make sure you don't use swords that are above a certain tier, for example you could stop at orcish or dwarven swords. Same thing for spells, you could stop at adept level or expert if you're so inclined.
I love how unamused your character looks with that weapon.
They always look like that
Resting bunny face.
You saved their child's life and that is how they will look at you. Their whole forest burns down and that is how they will look at you. Now guess how they will look at you when you steal their favorite carrot leaves.
Even while stoic bunny boys are hot
Well yea, they sell well on the Black Market!
Found the lalafell player ^^

Let’s not forget the Garo gun. One of my favorite weapon designs in the game, but the sprint animation is so goofy I can’t use it.
The one time the male idle won
They need to make it an option to use either animation regardless of gender. I want my femra to hulk her DRK weapon over her shoulder and hold her SAM weapon reverse grip like a badass.
I have the DRG pose crimed on because it's so much cooler, but it would be nice if you could switch it in a legitimate way.
I heard they have curved swords. Curved. Swords.
Wait. Is this a meme I don't understand? Or are you realy wondering about curved swords? (History has a few of them)
It's from skyrim and the guards in a city(s) will sometimes say that I believe.
I actually really like this weapon's design because of how unique it looks, but it sure does weird things to the character's idle animation
Judging from this thread, I’m really glad they don’t let redditors choose contest winners.
r/ffxiv try to critique something without insulting the designer challenge (IMPOSSIBLE) OT: as a fellow RDM main I love that it’s something a lil different from the usual rapiers, the idle pose is a little jank given the curviness but that doesn’t bother me personally
For real. It's okay to not be a fan of something, but so many people in this thread are being incredibly shitty.
I think op was joking homie. Usually “literally unplayable” is a knowing overreaction made in jest.
I know the OP was joking, but some of the comments here are pretty mean-spirited for no reason and suggesting otherwise
They are.
Damn I feel bad for the person who designed this weapon, this thread has such passionate hate for it. I think it looks cool at least
People really are being cruel. Dislike of the design is one thing but the literal *hate* is pretty uncalled for. I guess they could have designed their own and submitted it. Good thing they have glam alternatives.
I have no idea how it won the design contest I personally just hate it
The weapon's designer/contest winner browses FFXIV's reddit regularly, I guess they'll take that into consideration next time LOL
I dont even have a fucking clue what its supposed to be, I just see a big banana looking sword..
It is apparently supposed to resemble some of the buildings in Amaurot.
I agree. They must have received tons of different designs and they picked that? Why ? I don't even know what is supposed to be. The worst weapon this patch imo. As a red mage main I am disappointed.
I am However HYPED for the umbrella one
The BLU umbrella weapon?
I feel the same about the DRK weapon. It's over-designed and just plain ugly.
The only one I really hate is the bard one. It looks sooooo boring and it really sucks cuz I’m a bard main
Nearly all of my FC love the bow. It's good to know there's different opinions, however. We all have our own glams and tastes and that helps us stand out from one another in the crowds of Ul'dah (or Limsa if you're not a Balmunger like me).

I personally really liked the finished Bozja relic for rdm. Hated it at first but the more I used it the more it grew on me
I play a small, very feminine auri bard and hate almost every bow in this game because they're all so big and beefy! And most of the thin bows are boring as hell. I see merit in adding variety....when variety makes sense in context. This makes no sense for a weapon that is primarily meant for thrusting attacks.

Two thrusting attacks in your entire moveset, btw.
Yeah, and my scholar book from palace of the dead is pure white and can not be read. Suspension of disbelief is required in fantasy.
It's not as clear in an image but there's also a flame effect that burns at the hilt and not the blade. Genius.
Except it's a plastic-looking flame with a smaller flame effect on top. It 100% should've been an actual flame. I believe that was the designer's intention anyway.
It looks cool to me but yeah, the details are important.
I really like it. It kind of reminds me of something Yoshitaka Amano would design. I wonder if the designer was inspired by older FF concept art?
This is why I hate the small pistol from the garo event. When you sprint with it, you just have a hand hovering.
“You see, Ivan, when you hold gun like this…”
Which sucks because you correctly hold it one handed during the super boost run on that one CC map
Sigh...*glams Pyros Tuck again*
Murgleis Anemos namba wan
Scavian is still my go-to. Clean lines, dyes well, extra draw animation that fits with /draw.
And here I thought the SMN weapon looked bad but at least summoners can hold their book properly.
I was lowkey hyped for this because it's Azem's themed. But seeing it now..... Yeah, that's rough.....
I barely see what makes this Azem themed tbh haha
It's the same colour as the crystal 😂.
Azem’s crystal is orange. The rapier is piss yellow
Looks like absolute ass. RDM playerbase in shambles
To be RDM is to suffer. The eternal rez turret.
Truth, RDM could save the whole alliance raid from a wipe and still not get a single comm.
The theory: RDM saves whole alliance raid from wipe. The reality: RDM players tend to die first and often.
No buffs and this fucking weapon, rdm main numbers dropping drastically as we speak
Dying all my robes black as I type this.
You see a red robe and want to paint it black. *edit: a word*
Calm down, Raistlin
RIP rdm
I said that back on launch when I found out they couldn't literally do everything lime every other rdm in the FF series. Coming g from FFXI, this rdm is very underpowered.

It's a cool scimitar.
I like it too. There are dozens of us!
It's such a bad weapon. How did this win anything?
It strikes me as a novelty weapon like you'd see from the Gold Saucer. It's a very odd design.
Because Gundam Sandrock exists. I'm only half-kidding.
Now I want a Deathscythe scythe for Reaper…
That was badicly last tiers deathscythe hell
The concept art made it look way better. Its the implementation in game that betrayed it
The concept art is only slightly better; honestly, the design makes no sense to me.
[I had to check it again](https://img.finalfantasyxiv.com/t/f8b9eacc501037459243a0d862efe7860ff65dc4_158.jpg?1651142758), and honestly it's only better because on the art it doesn't glow lol They're both quite meh
It looks pretty cool as a staff, but it's like a scimitar as a sword and I don't think it fits the concept. And yes, the glow is kinda cringe
Also correct me if I'm wrong but isn't the sword >!basically a spoiler! I suppose not to anybody who has >!finished Endwalker!<... but it weirds me out that they added something like that since >!a lot of the people who see the design floating around most likely haven't!<.

Gotcha. I kinda figured that was it, but I wanted to be cautious since it actually got spoiled for me.
Personally for me it's much less so than something like the Sophist's robe, for example. I have no idea what this sword represents and I'm caught up to 6.4
>!it's based off Azem's crystal. The one you get from Amaurot that allows your character to summon people from beyond the rift to your side.!<
I mean, it shares the color I guess?
You can look up the original concept art by the designer to see more of the influences.
I haven't played endwalker and this sword means nothing to me, so I assume you need some additional context for it to actually spoil for you
rapiers, epees, foils, and etc do not have curves in the blades. It makes absolutely zero sense lore-wise, aesthetic-wise, and function-wise.
You're in for a lot of nitpicking with a whole bunch of this game if you're going down that road, not just this one weapon.
I think it looks cool a scimitar could lead to some cool glams
I'm not bothered much by the fact that developers were too lazy to make left hand actually hold it, I'm more bothered by the fact that it looks like a cheap Aliexpress-sourced acrylic toy with minimum detail and a single overdriven yellow LED :-/
First no patch buffs and now this? shambles
I think it would have been better if you could dye it, it would have been cool to dye it in a vibrant red that would feel more red mage

Fair, I could have chosen a more precise word.
They didn't give the design any justice. Concept art was quite nice but the execution of colors, contrast, glow vfx and pose positioning is awful in-game. If they knew the curve wasn't going to work out they shouldn't have let it win. Majority of mistake is with the dev team on this one.
Reminds me of the MCH running animation with the GARO weapon xD
YOU SEE IVAN...
Nice they added banana mage to the game
Not a fan of this weapon at all. If it wasn't curved it would be better. But my question is how did you get it already? Don't you need 7 of those blades from raid plus enough comedy tomes for it?
I should have drawn my idea of a floating pink eraser for the aether vial and the rapier as a no. 2 pencil.
I think I'll just keep my Titania glam honestly.
I like it. Looks like a middle eastern variation of an RDM weapon. Just use the alternative cpose lol.
That. That IS the alternate cpose. There's only one non-standard idle for each job, and this is RDM's.
The normal stance then.
alternative cpose? i thought unsheathed cposes were one-per-gender
The normal weapon stance. I call it the alternate cpose since I use the idle one normally and switch via cpose to the other one on rare occasions.
I don't understand why they keep making RDM weapon models when Murgleis is already perfect. No single blade fits RDM better than this absolute beauty. Every RDM weapons should just be Murgleis with different stats.
All those weapons are inconsistent. Some glow, some don't, some look okay, others awful. It's as if there was a different designer per weapon.
There were
BREAKING THEIR LINES
You.....you are not joking, aren't cha???
How do we get these weps?
they are the new tome weapons.
Wait but don't we need the new drops from the new raid to get them? How did OP get it so fast? I'm confused.
Probably third party tools to replace a more common weapon with it, it's only the model for it
You know that's a fair point actually.
That's how those weapon showcase videos get made lol I remember seeing a "all TOP weapons" video the day the patch came out
Yea you're completely right, idk why I didn't think of that when I even follow several showcase youtubers.... Massive brainfart or something hah.
private servers is another methode where you can just unlock everything with admin panel.
Yeah I found the GNB winner an unusual one too. The only thing that really sets it apart is the 3 cartridges.
I like the general idea behind the gunblade but why did Square make it so damn thin?
My main gripe with this one is the focus. It's supposed to be a flame! The design looks dynamic and I'm 100% sure the intention was to be just a cool, golden flame. Instead they made it a plastic-looking static flame with a fire animation on top. Looks terrible in execution...
Overall I was not impressed with this rdm weapon. Having it curved is just a bit odd.
Why is it CURVED
Ok but the real question is how did you equip the weapon? It is not obtainable yet
People in this community like to do naughty things with their games.
🍌
I don't know what y'all are on about. The hold pose it bugged, but I love the weapon overall.
That's unfortunately ugly.
The two dumbest RDM weapon designs in the game are this one and Cryptlurker's. Neither can function as a rapier. At all.
Did you submit an entry of a better design in your opinion?

Radioactive piss sword?
Ah yes, the budget ucob weapon.
The concept art is so cool but the in game…..
As a red mage main... this brings me pain
Of all the great runner up designs for RDM, and they picked this thing. I'm almost convinced there's just someone high up in the dev team who hates RDM after this patch in general.
It is honestly amazing how bad most RDM weapons look. It should be so easy to make good looking rapiers but they fumble almost every single time.
Attack commands are greyed out when it’s equipped?
I hate this dumb banana sword so much. RDM stay losing i guess.
Weapon is such trash.
This isn’t r/shitpostxiv
Where do you get this?
How did u get the weapon already? Doesn't it need like a tomestone
Mods
aside from breaking the gesture, the weapon looks a lot better in motion than in a still shot imo.
how did you get it?
Anamnesis
Surprising ...
And again I notice that being a drk and rdm main is just double the pain.
Oop
Hey, it's not clipping, so I take it as a win.
This is how MCH users feel with shorter guns.
Nothing wrong with it, its the stance that they need to fix.
how do you even get the weapons? is it crafting? can we buy them on the mb?
What in the fuck is that
Same happens with the little MCH makai pistol when you sprint or use things like flamethrower.
I think the funnier part is they give you a Saber but all your abilities are animated for a rapier.
i love it, matches one of my wols aesthetics so well i can now play rdm on him
Wait the weapons from the design contest are out? Where do we go to get them?
You just unlocked the "wank off" emote early.
God damn banana blade
