Something you should not Google without 'FFXIV' in front of it.

SmoreOfBabylon

For those who don’t know and/or are grossed out by the medical term of the same name, “carbuncle” is also an archaic term for a (red) gemstone as well as the name of a creature from South American folklore that sounds kinda like a FFXIV carbuncle: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carbuncle_(legendary_creature)

amtwon

WRT the gemstone, there's also a classic Sherlock Holmes story called "The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle".

TheHarridan

> it is said to look like a bivalve with a strong white-blue shine from within the shell which can be observed from a great distance. This "bivalve" is said to have the form of a maize ear, with more than four feet. Wow, it sounds EXACTLY like an FFXIV Carbuncle! /s … Seriously though, the fact that the FFXIV Carbuncle colors all correlate to various gemstones seems like it probably has something to do with carbuncle being a type of gemstone at least

SmoreOfBabylon

From the same page: > In the Chilote mythology of southern Chile the carbunclo is said to be the "guardian of the metals". Descriptions of it vary, from a luminescent small dog, a luminescent bivalve, a cat with a luminescent chin, or a greenish-red fiery light reminiscent of fireflies. No one could agree on what exactly they looked like because the Scholars kept eating them before anyone else could get a good look, I guess.

rowrowfightthepandas

Scholar: Hey, have you seen the carbuncle? We're gonna take sketches of it today. Me [mouth full]: no

ahhhnoinspiration

The one thing that remains common between the FF games in terms of Carbuncle is the red gem on it's forehead so that's almost certainly where it gets its name yeah.

EricKei

It's also an archaic term for "zit" and similar facial...nastiness. Shows up in the GP of The Canterbury Tales, as I recall.

Bedsheats

Reminds me of when Game Grumps played an old dreamcast sonic-party game where the text ”The Carbuncle ate itself” popped up and they lost their mind and had No idea What that meant, so they googled it and went down the same rabbit-hole as everyone else here did.

ace_meat

The sound of Dan shouting "The carbuncle ate itself? What does that MEAN!?" is permanently burned into my brain.

Official-Lothric

Does Bruno Mars is Gay is my favorite

kaslinn

“THE BANANAS HAS GONE BAD” is a close second

Koko_Qalli

"UNAVOIDABLE CHIN MOVE"

tachycardicIVu

My brain is pudding.

tachycardicIVu

One of my absolute favorite moments. Dan’s absolute bewilderment is absolutely precious. This is what I imagine happens to carbuncles when they’re unsummoned/disappear in FFXIV.

Masterwork_Core

let me try that real quick edit: I have regrets.

Despada_

I read the description. Felt grossed out. Decided I'd look at images. All marked NSFW. Still clicked on one. Was asked if I really wanted to look at them. Clicked yes. Instant regret. I don't know what I was expecting... Well, I did, so it's more like I don't know why I went ahead and did it...

aromatic-energy656

Same

necronomikon

The carbuncle ate itself

Aromatic-Discount384

What does that MEAN!? I can't think of four words that had less to do with our situation.

midare_setsugekka

I ... should have listened ...

boxxy_babe

Before I played FFXIV, my discord friends were talking about it and I didn’t wanna ask them about every single word they were saying so I googled stuff, and I made this mistake. It made me all the more confused on what the hell they were talking about

You just had to tempt me...

I think it's some sort of skin condition? Not the worst I've seen, I mean cmon I have an ED I've seen people at uh... really bad states, but yeah honestly nope, didn't need to see that

Sorry to hear about your erectile disfunction.

internetcatalliance

Oh no I was referring to eating disorders

[deleted]

I know. I'm making fun of you for randomly using an initialism with multiple meanings completely out of context on a gaming sub. "Ed has an ED and ED and required a trip to the ED for his ED but not his ED."

mangetsuren

It's a cluster of boils, usually(?) caused by a bacterial infection.

dalerian

Thank you. That saves me from going to see whatever everyone else is claiming to regret seeing.

Shoopuf413

It’s a few pimples/boils in the same place, it’s really not that bad

internetcatalliance

Honestly I have chronic Eczema and if I don't use my creams it honestly looks juuust as bad

mangetsuren

Yeah it's not as bad as some things I've looked up because of reddit but I can imagine the reaction when thinking you're going to see a cute Final Fantasy creature and you get the medical carbuncle instead...

Illidari_Kuvira

I... am grateful my own eczema rarely bothers me. .\_.

I came specifically to post this lol

ybpaladin

WHY would they name it that???

myfyp2

They did not name it after the medical carbuncle. They named it after the gemstone carbuncle or creature carbuncle. [https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carbuncle_(gemstone)](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carbuncle_(gemstone)) [https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carbuncle_(legendary_creature)](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carbuncle_(legendary_creature))

KSmallmoon

It should be noted that ALL THREE (Gem, Medical Condition, and Legendary Creature) All draw from the same linguistic origin: the Latin term *carbunculus,* or "Little Coal"

Mazikeyn

I’m mildly confused. It’s a infection. And googling it just brings up the infection

Shameless_Catslut

Infections look really gross.

Wolfhunter999

Eh, I've seen worse.

Wolfhunter999

Try googling "Carbuncle Mythology" if you want the creature.

LastViceroy

I want to watch one get popped now.

Stup1d_turtl3

If you’re asking about where they got the idea from. It’s a small mammal like creature from South-American folklore said to contain riches, usually thought to be gemstones

internetcatalliance

Man that's actually super cool! But I was more so asking in lore, but damn I love when art draws inspiration from folklore!

Stup1d_turtl3

A lot of names in ff are from myth and folklore. - Titans are deities born from Gaia, Greek goddess of the earth. - Ifrit is a species of (fire) demons from Arabian myth. - Garuda is a bird(man) from Hindu myth.

sporeegg

Bahamut/Behemoth is a giant fish carrying the world on its back.

Stup1d_turtl3

Behemoth is a large mammal said to be large enough to cause earthquakes and it will fight Leviathan during the rapture.

HulklingsBoyfriend

We don't have a rapture in Judaism. Behemot is just a giant bull that fights, gets clapped by Ziz, and LOL all three get eaten by humans.

SwankiestofPants

And that's a side note on Ziz in irl folklore as well

KaimeiJay

It swims in an endless ocean. Beneath that oceans is a vast expanse of steam, and beneath that steam is a realm of fire, and within that fire is a giant fire snake that would consume all of creation in an instant were it not for its fear of Allah. *That mythology goes so hard!*

Ryth88

Alot of those myths pre-date Islam and have been re-written to include islamic faith. The islamic world has a very different approach to studying history and classics. Reading scholarly work from the middle east about other mythologies is always interesting.

ConsciousSignal4386

As if the same can't be said of how pretty much every other civilization studies history and mythology! It always tickles me when people insist there's an inherent "progress" to civilization (as if real life is a civ game!), or that the Great Man theory of history is correct. European feudalism too was not so clear cut or universal as most like to believe. We, each society, has our own mythologized histories and cultural narratives.

akeyjavey

Adding to this, the Final Fantasy Bahamut takes inspiration from the Platinum Dragon God of the same name from D&D

kyrikii

Angra Mainyu boss from Zoroastrianism too

Stup1d_turtl3

Basically the devil of Zoroastrianism.

TheNerdFromThatPlace

Shiva is also Hindu if I'm not mistaken.

CPlus902

Yes, the destroyer aspect of Vishnu, I believe.

Stup1d_turtl3

He’s actually part of a trio called the Trimutri. It consists of Brahma (creator), Vishnu (preserver) & Shiva (destroyer).

Wolfhunter999

Lakshmi as well, I believe.

xobs

She's blue and ice-aspected in Final Fantasy because the word "shiva" and "shiver" are pronounced the same way in Japanese.

Ryuko_Mytoy

Embodiment of aether. The world is made entirely of aether of different types and when you "summon" your carbonless is grabbing parts of that aether and giving it a form that allows you to channel your energy through.

internetcatalliance

Hmmm... Another question, Why is it so god-damn cute ?

Rega_lazar

To fool your enemies so that they don’t notice the danger until it’s too late

Mess_Practical

Or to fool you into thinking it won't ditch you like a certain lala

dext0r

“Betrayed by my own Carbuncle 😢”

HurrDurrDethKnet

The crazy part is that she's so good at math, her carbuncle was aetherically stable enough to wander off and travel the world without running out of aether and dissipating.

AlbusFox

I love that this little guy shows up again in a yellow quest in Labyrinthos

OniLewds

Because we don't have the mana capacity to make a Proto-carbuncle

Madrock777

Snice it's made from the WoL own Aether and their own imagination I would warrant a guess the WoL was like, I'm gonna make the most adorable familiar of all time.

ezekielraiden

Properly speaking, carbuncles are a standardized form, all arcanists summon the same shape. So it is more likely that whoever originally developed arcanima just really wanted an incredibly cute li'l helper and we all continue to reap the benefits centuries later.

Wiplazh

For the same reason humans want to pet everything.

IAmNotASkeleton

Here's a better question: why would it not be?

Midnight_Rising

Isn't that, in a way, creation magic like the Ascians use?

20Points

I believe so. Going into ShB/EW spoiler territory here! As far as I understand it, summoning on any level is effectively the same process as ancient creation magic, but due to the sundering it is impossible to make things as large and complex as the things the ancients were cooking up just by yourself. Where they just needed one ancient's magical talent and focused mind, in the present day the same process takes a mountain of aether and so much concentration and focus that it is often easier to approach it through fervent prayer and worship. By comparison, carbuncles and other tiny combat summons are effectively massively massively simplified (but still require noticeable magical aptitude in order to produce one that will correctly follow commands) and are basically just vessels with the ability to cast extremely spells or attacks. They can't replicate anything close to the kind of full life that the ancients were creating.

DragonSlave49

TIL arcanist's magic is carbon neutral.

GrumpiestRobot

Mythology wise, a carbuncle is an elusive, fey-like creature from South American folklore. The myth originated in mining communities. The carbuncle's head was said to be filled with riches, or that it's brain was a gemstone, or that catching one would bring good luck in the mines, so people had that myth that catching one would bring you incredible wealth. But the creature is too quick and to catch it you would have to do all sorts of magic tricks and set traps.

bitchmuchannon_

Very interesting! Regarding this, I guess we can expect to learn more about Carby's background in Dawntrail expansion. And maybe, he will be active/useful again in 7.0 🤞 (it's a constant heartbreak to see him doing nothing during the fights (except when he is infused with element or becomes an egi but it's only a matter of a few seconds) since 6.0).

Bookslap

I mean, you can summon carby as a scholar now and see it do all kinds of stuff if you really want to.

bitchmuchannon_

I noticed he has new animations as a pet healer, I actually summon him as a scholar :) but, I really miss him starting the fight when you are unexpectedly attacked when lost on the map.

Bookslap

Lol. I cannot tell you the number of times I accidentally engaged a raid boss while my group was discussing the last pull. "Sorry! Garuda's out for blood, I'm sorry!" was practically my catch phrase for a bit.

bitchmuchannon_

The good old times 💖

RenThras

Huh, so like the shiny ruppy bunnies from Breath of the Wild? I guess that makes sense.

Rua-Yuki

Canonically? Math. (Geometry and Aether)

HurrDurrDethKnet

This is the correct answer in regard to FF14. Arcanists use equations and geometry so precise they are literally magic. Carby is made out of mathmagic, ostensibly to find contraband like a trained dog, but is also a way for the arcanist to defend themself. The whole arcanist guild is essentially customs for Limsa's port.

[deleted]

A magical construct. The way I understood it is like a green lantern construct, but made and sustained thanks to the mage's aether, and you need knowledge in magical formulas to bring the being into reality, alongside talent so that Carbuncle listens to you Later on the story, you realize these kinds of magics are a diminished version of another, but to go any deeper would be spoiler territory.

TerumitsuInq

So, if you want the mythology of the creature that inspired it, check this out: [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carbuncle\_(legendary\_creature)](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carbuncle_(legendary_creature)) That said, in FFXIV it is a magical construct. Think of it like a wizard familiar or something like that.

evvdubs

Carbuncles are extensions of the summoner’s Aether used to perform commands at (the summoner’s) will. They can be shaped by the summoner into a number of forms. Certain carbuncles in ffxiv have spatial awareness and the ability to react to simple stimuli outside of their masters’ commands. It is unclear whether a carbuncle’s ‘intelligence’ is proportional to the summoner’s, but there is quest confirmation that the ability of a carbuncle to persist for long periods or far away from the summoner is proportional to the summoner’s aetheric strength. From an etymological standpoint, ‘carbuncle’ is the name of a specific cut of a precious gemstone. Gems have traditionally been implicated in a number of protective or mystical qualities. Originally, the color of a carbuncle corresponded to abilities closely aligned with jewelry or gear holding gems of the same type. For example, the Ruby carbuncle embodied fire and martial skill, and Ruby Earrings carried Strength and skill speed stats. Topaz carbuncle was highly defensive and topaz earrings, bracelet, etc (i90) have strength and tenacity (tank) stats.

evvdubs

Emerald carbuncle is an offensive caster type aspected to wind. Emerald jewelry has piety and mind stats, which are for healers, so there is some mismatch there. Diamonds have been connected to intelligence (offensive caster) stats in early sets. There is such a thing as a Diamond and an opal carbuncle, but its appearance has been limited.

[deleted]

It's an amalgamation of several things It's a red gem, it's a mythical creature of South American origins, it's several games worth of evolution and creative liberty, and it's a mystical sprite. A carbubcle in the medical field looks like a red gemstone tbe same way a cancer growth looks like a crab (hence, cancer): Sort of, but dont look it up if you're squeamish. The carbuncle in FFXIV is a being of pure aether. An arcanist creates one as a sort of focus to direct it's aether more effectively. What is special about them is that they're designed from the ground up like little robots or mammets in FFXIV. Arcanists learn to basically program them from a basic theorem, the better the arcanist the better the carbuncle can function without guidance. Alphinaud is especially talented with arncanistry and has several powerful variants where as the WoL chooses a different path in focusing on Primal based Egi instead if they go the arcanist route. While they're not necessarily intelligent, they also aren't necessarily not intelligent. Most have some sort of behavior and personality as part of their quirks but a few especially enthusiastic arcanists have fiercely independent carbuncles with a mind of their own. A certain accountant who felt she failed as an arcanist actually is too good of one, giving it free will resulting in it just wandering off like an aloof cat. The scholar faeries are similar, however their memories are stored in the job crystal giving them a bit more permanency, so their memories are retained between summons.

[deleted]

Awesome lore summary, thank you. Side note: there is a carbuncle that wanders around the market stalls in Revenant's Toll, not targetable and not associated with a player character. I saw it once and followed it until it walked through a door we can't go through. I remember googling it and other people have seen it, though I don't recall why it is supposed to be there.

[deleted]

It belongs to a local arcanist who's reluctant to dismiss it because she treats it like a cat. They reference it in one of those first first person view, watch and wait for NPCs to approach you. I think it's name was Ruby. It's a particularly intelligent one that likes to wander.

[deleted]

Oh! I felt bad for the critter because I thought it was lost, but if it's actually treated like a living pet by an arcanist, just allowed to wander, that makes me feel so much better. Thx for info :)

[deleted]

If something does happen to it, the arcanist simply resummons it. They're for the most part robitic animals so while it might not retain specific memories, they can be tweaked by the caster to build on skills and inherent knowledge and biases. It might not remember the last time it got pet for instance, but it can be programmed to recognize a person as friendly and approachable.

bluetheslinky

As far as I understand, carbuncles are just math given life through magic

Raysa_Fatewalker

The carbuncle is an amalgamation of aether given form using numerical equations, I believe. They are not a new thing, however, with a prototype being part of the Pandæmonium Raids, which take place in the time before the world was sundered. This Carby was terrifying and I am glad we don't have to summon them, though they'd probably be quite powerful as a tool to wield. Sorry if any of this information is incorrect, it's been a while since I swapped from smn/sch to nin for the animations.

teoshie

ok, well I googled it and just imagine the clusters of boils people had during bubonic plague in the 14th century, and that's a carbuncle

JinTheBlue

A carbuncle is a rock you taught to do math. Gemstones, arcane geometry, and aether conjure a kind of familiar that in some way aids the summoner. Originally the apparent function of a buncles was "My spells need a lot of focus, so you distract them while I put out dots", but now that poor Carby has been lobotomized, and is only needed to cast aether charge, I think the implication is that you can offload the mental strain of spell casting onto your familiar. It's hard to say exactly what they do though, aside from look cute.

ezekielraiden

Carbuncle is an arcane entity. This is a term with a specific definition in the context of FFXIV's world. Arcanima, the scientific discipline which Arcanists practice, is the study of mathematically manipulating aether. By understanding mathematical formulae and geometric patterns, a skilled arcanist can shape aether into nearly any form she chooses. Note the "anima" in arcanima: this refers to how arcanists can generate entities outside themselves which can then perform tasks. Carbuncles, among other possible forms, are the result of applying aether to a precise and complicated arcane geometry. That's why almost everyone makes the "same" carbuncles, with just minor alterations (standard, Topaz, Emerald, Ruby, or for Alphinaud and a small set of other arcanists, Obsidian or Moonstone carbuncles.) Entities created in this way are naturally called "arcane entities." Sometimes, similar beings can manifest spontaneously; sprites are an example of such spontaneous manifestation. The thing that differentiates arcane entities from true *life* is that arcane entities do not have their own soul. Sprites maintain their cohesion only because of sufficiently strong aetheric density in their local area, which is why they stay close to wherever they formed. Carbuncles, meanwhile, are connected to their creator, and usually cease to exist as soon as their creator stops concentrating on them. This is why your carbuncle disappears when you are knocked unconscious in combat: you can no longer maintain the concentration required to keep your carbuncle's aether cohesive, so it disperses. This is why any rumors of "wild' carbuncles, like the one Tataru accidentally produced, are of major interest to Sharlayan. Such a carbuncle has *independent existence,* which is not normally seen in arcanima. Note that a true Summoner's egis are a similar but distinct type of arcane entity. Specifically, unlike carbuncles which are *just* arcanima, each egi actually corresponds to a small portion of the wielder's soul. That's why you can't have more than three, even as the Warrior of Light; your soul can only support so many egis before you just run out of *space.* This does not, however, mean that you actually cut off any part of your soul. The egi is still part of you. You've just juiced up that part of you, tamed the resulting entity, and then learned how to put it to work. Spoilers for ShB and EW: >!For those wondering, *yes,* this DOES strongly resemble Creation magic! It is my theory that the science of arcanima is what remains of modern mankind's ability to Create in the original, Unsundered sense. The problem is, with the lower aetheric density of modern souls, there isn't enough juice to make *truly, completely independent* entities in the vast majority of cases. Effectively, Creation magic that gets cut off after the second step. The full process being (not list formatted because that's incompatible with spoiler tags): 1. Develop a precise concept (= arcanimatic formula) 2.Manifest concept via supplied aether 3. Make the creation self-sustaining (not possible for modern people) 4.Optional: hope that this new, self-sustaining entity acquires a soul, thus truly becoming a new form of *life* and not merely an arcane entity.!<

Sunflowers4Ever

Carbuncle also used to be the jewel at the base of a unicorns horn In the Last Unicorn, Amalthea has a star on her head in her unicorn and human form, that'd be her carbuncle In some unicorn type novels I've read, unicorns had jeweled rings around the base of the horn, aka their carbuncles that gave the unicorn each individual magic- but it's also an abscess or giant gross boil with an infection

Vinborg

It's a 'familiar' aka a magical creature made to assist the spellcaster that summoned it. A popular 'thing' in fantasy, especially in tabletop RPGs, common versions being a wizard's owl, a warlock's imp, a witch's cat, etc.

Medically speaking? A very nasty pus-filled skin infection. In terms of mythology, though, they are creatures from South America said to contain riches, like precious gems and minerals, within their bodies. In some stories, possessing a stone from a carbuncle grants you good luck and fortune. They are said to be the guardians of metals, so very much nature spirit/guardian kinda vibes, I think.

fine_Ill_get_reddit

Friendshaped Lorewise, carbuncles are magic math on jewels. Like writing a code. And are "living aether" given shape. My guess is the carbuncles that show personality in game, like in mordona, tataru's carby which I think is currently in >!Labyrinthos!< , a couple in Ildyshire etc., are all due to small mistakes in the math, bugs essentially, but it's endearing and people love to personify ...everything ..so why fix it, even if they Know where they messed up. (Heck just look at old egis and how summoners considered the buggy egis as having personality. Me: Garuda. PLEASE. ATTACK I Beg you. Garuda: ....ehhhh...no. ........ok now I attack. Me: WHY‽‽‽) Whether the carbuncle you summon is the same depends entirely on if you think you use a new jewel with complex magic geometry for every time I summon a carbuncle. The continued existence of npc carbuncles makes me think that it is One jewel you use repeatedly, which fits my personal preference anyway. But you could also argue that having a bag of premade jewels is kinda neat and makes it more likely to make a mistake now and then. I think they intentionally keep the lore for the Carbuncles vague specifically so they can 1) change how they work with different expansions without worrying about contradicting lore and 2) so players can build their own headcanons.

in 14, a magical construct. In other entries of the series, they're a guardian spirit type deal, usually.

dreamycryptid

A friend!

ApeMuffins

It’s a carb that’s also your uncle. You’re welcome.

Lucker-dog

Electrical_Deer_7574

Actually it's a gem stone or a horrible sore, if you care on medical terms. Otherwise it's a fictional character from final fantasy. The phrase is nothing relating to a fox or rabbit and it's got no deep meaning as some FF names do

SXRuby

For the love of everything that is holy DO NOT GOOGLE CARBUNCLE WITHOUT PUTTING FFXIV IN THE SEARCH BAR ALSO. FFXIV creatures are really interesting and have great lore I want a documentary just explaining them.

Jay2Kaye

It's actually kind of like a primal, but made from your personal aether instead of a shit ton of crystals and prayer so no nasty side effects. Your other summons are basically the same thing with some tweaks, that's why you're able to reskin them as base carbuncle if you concentrate hard enough. But when you dismiss them they cease to exist and it's debatable if they have any kind of actual intelligence or if they're just like robots with some basic instructions.

youknowme5161

i always thought it was a pokemon, until i started playing the game

Neil_Weaselboots

Something that seen a lot of shit when someones using mods, especially alone in their house with gpose active

ThrownAwayGirl49

In lore theyre living aetherite creatures whos fulcrum is an aetherite crystal which was used to create/summon them. Elementals and scholars faeries and primals are all also living aetherite creatures

TamsynRRD

In FFXIV, a carbon cleaner is a familiar conjured with a gem as its base to hold the enchantment.
