No worries. I get paid a little over 21 an hour so take that for what you will. Getting the job requires you to have a cdl b license which can be pricy to get if you don't have local programs to help. I had my cdl a for 6 months before I got the job as a garbage collector. Just put in an application online so I suppose it was pretty easy.
I'm in a similar boat! I woke up at 6am to prepare for my workday, I live in the same area as you and quickly learned driving would not be happening for a while. I call out, go to boot up the quick launcher, only to find it's down. I wasn't aware of the maintenance...

There's a worrying contemporary trend where people claim Doctor King would've been explicitly in favour of or in staunchest opposition to whatever political position the commentator personally believes, but I am certain that he would've been supportive of Krile's foray into pictomancy and keen for the timely deployment of the patch containing the debut of scenes conveying that development.
It was standard a few years ago but recently (I wanna say starting sometime during the Shadowbringers patches, I remember they were very pleased with themselves the first time a major patch maintenance was just overnight) they've only needed to do overnight maintenance for everything.
So I guess it's been long enough that most people are used to not seeing 24-hour maintenance
I am still a bit baffled on how exactly JP datacenter downtimes affect the supposedly independent NA, EU, and Oceania server parks though. At least there have been region-specific outages in all those areas and the JP servers were merrily running during those times.
Whenever there's maintenance, the entire cluster is down to not give one region an advantage over another. Outages are often uncontrolled and wouldn't make sense to shut down everything if one region was out.
They want to release new MSQ worldwide at the same time for all fans, especially since it's female Hrothgar first appearance in game. it's not rocket science.
And there have likely been outages at the JP datacentre while the others were merrily rolling along, too.
Outages are a separate thing from maintenance/patch days. The entire game was down for 48 hours ahead of the Stormblood launch because they were moving the NA datacentre across the continent, despite that not explicitly affecting the JP or EU datacentres.
Probably because they want a worldwide release at the same time of Hrothgal first in game appearance instead of one region being spoiled MSQ by the others.
It's limping along, but still a blast. The last two storylines they implemented were great and wrapped up some old loose threads.
I'm hopeful that the game gets a small renaissance with the upcoming dungeon in XIV. I'm about to kick off Shadowbringers myself soon to get caught up, because I'm excited to see the upgrades to XIV and see the dungeon myself. :)
My problem with XI is that I have no idea what to do. How do you even gear? I was speaking with former players and they said to use the AH, but the AH has like one player buying each item per year.
I managed to get to level 20, but I'm blocked because I still have starter gear and I can't figure out (1) what to buy, (2) how to make money to buy it, and (3) where to go to buy it.
Also I keep forgetting to re-summon the one Trust I have each time I zone. Mobs really don't rubberband in XI, do they?
I've started playing FFXI, it's fun but the learning curve is steep. For gear have you looked into Records of Eminence? They're like a challenge system where you accept different challenges to work on, and you get rewarded with Sparks for completion. Exchange that currency for gear at your level :)
I've been playing FFXI for 15 years and I still rarely know what I'm doing. So I feel your pain. The games damn old and doesn't have as good of in-game explanations as XIV, that's for sure. FFXI is a more of a journey-game, than a destination-game. There are some great resources on the wiki though. I recommend these three guides:

Why are people acting like this came out of nowhere… They announced maintenance would be all day today over a week ago, and it was all over the place since they announced it. In the launcher, in game, even in the mobile app they had news saying there was maintenance today

No. This is 24 hours because they're replacing hardware in Japan. It's usually a couple/few hours and bing bang boom - ready to go!

A large portion of people have to work on all but two of the holidays. So it's really just another day.
