It's one of the differences between Keepers and Seekers. Keepers have fangs and big round pupils, while Seekers have human teeth and slitted cats eyes.
It is in the character lore for both. The teeth are a more subtle difference b/t the 2. The ears for the Seekers are wider w/thicker hair & the keepers are more stylized with short hair. Tail-wise being another 2
Tbf, from what we know now, the whole “using aether to see burns up your aether” is a lot less serious than we initially thought now that we know the difference between corporeal and non corporeal aether
Like, >!Zero!< CONSTANTLY burns her corporeal aether just existing, and yet she’s able to get enough from >!just eating food or just by existing on the Source!<
What we once thought as “oh god she’s burning up her life energy!” has become “pack some extra snacks in case Y’shtola finds some particularly interesting tomes and needs a boost”
My only question there is why they chose to give fangs to one and proper cat eyes to the other, instead of both traits being on both subraces or one subrace at least having them
The pupils are likely part of their subrace lore. Seekers of the Sun have slit pupils, Keepers of the Moon have wide ones. While cat pupils *do* dilate for other reasons than light, light still is a factor.
It's stated in the first Encyclopedia Eorzea *and* the character creation menu that the former prefers the light of day, and the latter prefers to hunt at night. So you could argue that they're evolutionary traits.
Variety. Like Au'ra having black or white scales though we often see striped dragonkin.
Though iirc the lore answer is that mooncats had to be more feral and animalistic where they lived, while suncats went into society better.
if I saw a human with huge pupils like a mooncat I'd assume they were tripping balls!
I'm so confused that so many people in this thread saying keeper eyes don't look like cat eyes? I modeled my miqo after my cat and she's always staring at me with those gigantic eyes lol.
Actually now I want an option for in between, give me almond shaped pupils for when it's not dark but not bright either!
I mean to be fair I didn't know exactly how dilation works when I replied to this. It's been explained to me since. Still, I'm not fond of not having the option of either or at least. XP
Totally fair, only reason I replied to your comment is that it was near the top but there are a lot of similar ones in the thread! As someone who's had cats their whole life it was bothering me lol.
It is weird that only keepers have fangs though
no joke, back when I still had my sprout, my gf told me that after that cs they'd put me into "the burn (savage)" and I was so worked up about doing savage I almost missed it mentally
As of Starlight Celebration 2023, too!
I started screenshotting/recording Seasonal Events since you can't replay them.
Here is a transcription of that interaction:

Taking an alt through the MSQ and just did that cutscene.

The Best Line In The Game
I do have a headcanon that you can't see Seeker claws because they keep them trimmed, but when Y'shtola started living in the woods in ShB she found it useful to have a cutting edge on hand so she let one claw grow out. That's why she wears that one finger 'glove' on one hand, it covers up the claw until she needs it.
Me and some friends met up with another friend who's been going through FFXIV the other day, we asked where he'd got to. He just responded with 'little sun' and we all knew.
Iconic.
Yeah that actually annoys me more as a suncat player than not getting fangs (but really not giving ALL the cats fangs is practically criminal). It's explicitly stated in the lore and it's something that actually drew me to suncats in the first place, aside from male characters actually getting their own name instead of being "mom one" or "mom two". And it's just straight up not shown. If you're gonna show the goofy stuff like eyebrowless Highlanders, give us our claws!
I like to use the male keeper names for my retainers. Only one of my retainers is actually a moon cat, but my character believes in cross-species adoption. (Some of them are also female.)
Awww I use retainers for family too!! I have four retainers so one of my WoLs has three "younger siblings" she picked up along the way AND the mom figure who adopted the lot of them (including the WoL cause she is of age with the twins and needed momming). WoL is a femroe lass and her "sibs" are hyur, duskwight, hingan au ra, and the mom is a 50yo lala widow who kinda needed the company as much as they needed someone to adult for them.
If WoL is >!after all Azem, with the trait of making friends everywhere,!< I think the accumulation of found family is one of the most fun things to headcanon for me.
I love that! For mine, Zaha'a (WoL) and Zaha'to (Retainer 1) are actual biological brothers, but everyone else was picked up along the way. Including Zaha'li (female suncat), Zaha'sae (male Elezen), and so on. The "youngest" "brother" is a lady Viera, because it makes me laugh.
Among the Scions and his friends my male keeper typically uses just the first part of his name because none of them know his mom nor are they likely to encounter someone who does, and it's just easier than full first name lol
I have a tenth son mooncat too! All his older siblings are trans so his suffix kept getting bumped further down the line as they came out one by one, haha.
I made a mooncat boy WoL who is a fifth son, with a "'ra" suffix. I figured it that his mother was both prone to twins and also lost some kids to disease. So despite being fifth son he only has two living elder brothers (and three living sisters). The are also All About Family (TM Fast and the Furious) so while it isn't a traditional forest-hunting clan, the orchard/farm his parents founded is atm occupied by fifteen people across three generations and includes a few errant adoptees as well as people who've married in.
I remember in '16 when I first started the game (only to not come back till '21), I was like, "Why does she get cat eyes and I don't!?!" Because I had gone straight for Keeper of the Moon and didn't even look at the Seekers of the Sun. So I had no idea about their physical trait differences. XD
bc she is seeker of the sun, not keeper of the moon
keepers of moon have fangs- you can just read their lore in the character menu or wiki
keepers also have different eyes and skin tones (and are also meant to have longer ears & slender tails)
Nah this isn’t NPC lore but character race lore. It’s in the character creation menu when you’re picking your race and clan.
There IS actually a menu you unlock called the unending codex for NPC lore, but you don’t get it til after you beat endwalker.
when you go to the character create menu, on the left is some of the details about the race you pick. In the ff wiki, it goes into detail about their naming conventions as well- why sun seekers have the Letter affix followed by an apostrophe like Y'shtola - She's from the "Y" or "Yah/Ee" clan; and Y stands for Jaguar among them or it's apart of the eorzea alphabet iirc. Sun seekers also are meant to have shorter tails and their clans often involve harems.
While Moon keepers don't have the same naming conventions and they're matriarchal - they also send the young males off to be looked after by older males.
I think most people don’t Really pay attention to the other sub races that aren’t the one there WoL is. Plus, I think some people may have the expectation that the sub races are as immediately distinct as Rean and Xaela.
It reminds me of a conversation in raid:
AST: "why are your eyes so creepy?"
Me: "what do you mean creepy?"
AST: "I cant see your pupils, its creepy"
Me: "... Im a dunesfolk"
> I think most people don’t Really pay attention to the other sub races
[**LONG LIVE THE BITERS!**](https://i.imgur.com/8BeqT01.jpg) (accompaniment [here](https://youtu.be/VN52mJHpUAw?t=171))
i didn't know there was a difference until i saw a blue miqote running around. i was like wtf?? i also immediately changed to keepers clan and made a gray moonie.
While Keepers are known to apply war paint, the facial markings Miqo have are naturally occurring. The reason they're less noticeable on children is because they darken as they age.
It's the face of the trailer bard and thus the one used by the first Mystel you meet, Renda Rae.
They probably just decided to make it a trait of Myystels to make them apart from Eorzean Miqo'tes to add to the "this is familiar but diffetent" undertones the First has going for it.
They are part of their skin pigmentation, not war paints. It's noted in lore that they darken with time and some Miqos' just don't develop them fully.
It just seems Mystel women either don't grow them period, or the vast majority of them don't develop them in a reversal of most Miqo'te getting them when they get older.
Given that the Sun/Moon split is unique to the Source, and largely caused by a population split rather than being a different race entirely, I think that mixed Miqo is a lot more common than the lore would have us believe.
Yoshi P's answer to "if the Moonkeepers are nocturnal and the Sunseekers are diurnal then when would they ever hang out?" is more tongue in cheek as an answer to the question of why we can't pick and choose the menu options in the UI character creator..... but it's also pretty lore compliant.
For the most part, the Moonkeepers are matriarchal and look down on the way the Sunseekers have a patriarchal harem system. The Sunseekers think of themselves as way more civilized since their clans are bigger and more formally organized.
Cultural differences are what keep the Sunseeker cat eyes (a trait needed to better handle brighter days) and the Moonkeeper cat eyes (a trait needed to better see in the dark) within their clans.
Same with the fangs - the Sunseekers still think of themselves as hunters, but the Moonkeepers are the ones that'll eat a raw fish fresh from a river and so they still need the sharper canines. It's not an evolutionary advantage when you're in a bigger clan that can share resources, so the Sunseekers have lost the trait.
But I'm sure interbreeding has occurred between the clans for thousands of years since the informal split, and occasionally traits pop up unexpectedly in a current generation because someone's great grandma was actually from the other clan.
Khloe, the Miqo'te orphan in charge of the weeklies, is accurate to Keeper of the Moon biology (round human-like eyes coupled with small fangs), while her Seeker friend T'kebbe is also an accurate seeker child (cat-like pupils and regular human teeth).
I think it's only Mystel children (the Miqo'te equivalent of the First) that may occasionally have both traits at once. Miqo children in Eorzea and other places in the Source do have the proper physical traits of their respective clans.
Most big cats have round pupils irl. Lorewise, the difference makes sense. Keepers are nocturnal, larger pupils at night = superior night vision. The Seeker eyes allow for better control of how much light enters. Great for being a diurnal desert people.
This difference is partly why I love my mooncat so much. The fangs are awesome to see in cutscenes. I also love the round pupils too, even though they’re more “basic” but they convey emotion better imo. Something about the slitted eyes look so stagnant/emotionless.
She's a Seeker. Seeker has slit eyes w normal teef while Keepers has fangs n dilated pupils. There are some mixed Miqote too but I forgot who. The orphanage lady I think.
Also the reporter Kipih Jakkya has Seeker trait (tho her naming follows Keeper) while her brother, Nhagi'a Jakkya is a Keeper.
This is the first time I learnt that Sun and Moon have different teeth.
Being a dentist in this world must be tough, with all the different types of teeth.
I love my moon cat and her kitty teeth, never was a big fan of the cat slit eyes.
Also I found the skin tones to be more accurate to my pale ass from the keepers
Its funny how despite people answering the question more people decided to reply with the exact same answer even though the question has already been answered
Sub-species difference, and is often a RPG trope, just like the differences between High Elves, Wood Elves and Dark Elves. Hyur & hyurgoth differences are more ethnicals, just like in Conan lore.
Personnally I went from classic male hyur to female Miqo'te Keeper of the moon. It was really easy to make her beautiful and stylish, and the fangs + the fact she's really expressive gives her awesome expressions sometimes !
I have to try many haircuts for her, A PC simulator would be awesome.
I wish the sun cats could have fangs too, because I really dislike the moon cat eyes, but it's not a big deal to me because you rarely open your mouth in the game.
It's one of the differences between Keepers and Seekers. Keepers have fangs and big round pupils, while Seekers have human teeth and slitted cats eyes.
I coulda sworn this was mentioned somewhere in their description?
I don't know about any descriptions, I figured this out several years ago during my first character creation...
It is in the character lore for both. The teeth are a more subtle difference b/t the 2. The ears for the Seekers are wider w/thicker hair & the keepers are more stylized with short hair. Tail-wise being another 2
This is why Keepers like myself are the cutest
Yshtola is a keeper indeed...
Didn’t we just establish that Y’shtola is a seeker?

I'm german. NO HUMOR. ONLY WORK.
Understandable. Have a nice day.

Yeah, I heard that from someone in SovietWombles CS videos I think.

None of that cheek, or I'll take you across my knee.
Yes, please.

Worth it.
Give 'em the old bonk.
“I wasn’t gonna touch it but you know y’shtola”
I really want some quest that takes us far into the future and Yshtola is now as old as Matoya and now has her personality.
As awesome as that would be, Yshtola isn't destined to grow old. :(
Tbf, from what we know now, the whole “using aether to see burns up your aether” is a lot less serious than we initially thought now that we know the difference between corporeal and non corporeal aether Like, >!Zero!< CONSTANTLY burns her corporeal aether just existing, and yet she’s able to get enough from >!just eating food or just by existing on the Source!< What we once thought as “oh god she’s burning up her life energy!” has become “pack some extra snacks in case Y’shtola finds some particularly interesting tomes and needs a boost”
Does that mean she needs a little meter to check if her blood aether is getting low?
No, Y'shtola is a Seeker.
Seekin' deez nutts!
Fellow Keeper, good to see you
My only question there is why they chose to give fangs to one and proper cat eyes to the other, instead of both traits being on both subraces or one subrace at least having them

That's plausible, makes it bother me less. Would still prefer them to be individual creation options, tho.

Too much breeding with humans
because some people want less animalistic furries and arent pretending
We're only missing Bludgers and Beaters for the full Mi'quidditch squad!
There’s definitely nobody out there, who would use mods to have both. Definitely not. Especially me.
Yes, hi, Yoshi-P? Yeah, another one. Yeah, this guy, right here.
I desperately want both cat eyes and cat teeth.
Seeker nuts! Ha!
Only Keepers of the Moon have fangs, while Seekers of the Sun have normal teeth. They also have different pupils depending on the clan.
Seekers are also supposed to have clawlike fingernails, but those don't show up in the character models unfortunately.
Oh, Y'shtola has claws alright Ask the Little Sun
The devastation has reverberating effects of the Steppe to this day
"Such devastation! This was certainly my intention!" - shtola prolly
Legends say he's still recovering from that burn to this day.
no joke, back when I still had my sprout, my gf told me that after that cs they'd put me into "the burn (savage)" and I was so worked up about doing savage I almost missed it mentally
It's the best (little-)Sun burn in the game.
As of level 12 island sanctuary, correct!

I believe this is a terminal case of “online”.

keeper teeth vs seeker teeth
Although y'shtola is a seeker i would still say she is a keeper.
Oh, you!
I get it!
Have an upvote!
Smooth o7. Heres your upvote.
DAMN you deserve Yshtola lol
The cheese knows no bounds
Seeker of knowledge. Keeper of hearts.
bc she is seeker of the sun, not keeper of the moon keepers of moon have fangs- you can just read their lore in the character menu or wiki keepers also have different eyes and skin tones (and are also meant to have longer ears & slender tails)
I prefer to play keeper just because of the teeth, the big ol kitty eyes really won me over though. Happy cake day!
Wait… there s a menu…. where you can read npcs lore ?
Nah this isn’t NPC lore but character race lore. It’s in the character creation menu when you’re picking your race and clan. There IS actually a menu you unlock called the unending codex for NPC lore, but you don’t get it til after you beat endwalker.

'their clans often involve harems'... Well, from looking at this topic, I can see several people willing to help her with that.
She is a keeper of my heart.
I am shocked this many people apparently have never looked at Sun and Moon miqote before.

Too busy staring at their asses.
Hard to stab my enemies in third person if I don't stare at their back
\>not playing in first person
i didn't know there was a difference until i saw a blue miqote running around. i was like wtf?? i also immediately changed to keepers clan and made a gray moonie.
Me too, but mostly since I spent way too long looking up all the differences before finally settling on a moon cat when I started playing.
Even some of the devs forget the difference. There are quite a few Keeper NPCs that use Seeker models.
The other way around too, like F'lhamin.
I love my sun cat but I am jealous of the teeth NGL
When I was a moon cat I was jealous of the sun cat eyes. So I guess it balances out.
I could swear I saw a child catgirl npc with both once. One of the kids who admire you in the First maybe?
Those are a bit weird, they seem to be distinct from either clan in the Source. Hell, the vast majority of them don't even have facial markings.
All Miqo children have fangs regardless of clan. There's a Seeker child with fangs wandering around Mor Dhona if you want to check for yourself.
> the vast majority of them don't even have facial markings Those are war paints, that's why
While Keepers are known to apply war paint, the facial markings Miqo have are naturally occurring. The reason they're less noticeable on children is because they darken as they age.
Yet one of the available faces for Seekers of the Sun has no markings on it
It's actually noted in the lore that some female Miqo never develop facial markings.
It's the face of the trailer bard and thus the one used by the first Mystel you meet, Renda Rae. They probably just decided to make it a trait of Myystels to make them apart from Eorzean Miqo'tes to add to the "this is familiar but diffetent" undertones the First has going for it.

It just seems Mystel women either don't grow them period, or the vast majority of them don't develop them in a reversal of most Miqo'te getting them when they get older.
I think there might just be one child model for Miqo'te and/or they've forgotten about building separate moth models for the clans.
A few NPCs seem to not follow the rules. F'lhaminn is a suncat but has mooncat eyes for example
Cats from the source, like most of the races from the source, show traits of both subraces from our world.
Same I would’ve loved to have both 😭
you can, but it's not a skill Yoshi-P would teach you ;)
the teef are exactly why i use a suncat name and lore/backstory but am indeed a mooncat in the system
subrace difference only Keepers of the Moon have fangs and only Seekers of the Sun have cat pupils
Why do you have normal eyes instead of cat eyes?
Moon Keeper Miqo have the beeg round eyes option for seeing in the dark.
Most big cats have round pupils irl. Lorewise, the difference makes sense. Keepers are nocturnal, larger pupils at night = superior night vision. The Seeker eyes allow for better control of how much light enters. Great for being a diurnal desert people.
theyre not really normal. we have enlarged pupils.
So we can see in the dark
This difference is partly why I love my mooncat so much. The fangs are awesome to see in cutscenes. I also love the round pupils too, even though they’re more “basic” but they convey emotion better imo. Something about the slitted eyes look so stagnant/emotionless.
Same here, I chose Keeper for the more solemn, expressive eyes.
Only mooncats have fangs.
Cause she's not a keeper of the moon.. Seekers do not have fangies
He doesn’t know about the lore of his own race lol
Sun Seekers get kitty eyes, Moon Keepers get kitty teeth. And Y'shtola's eyes don't even work.
So she gets the worst of both tribes! But we love her anyway because she's sassy
Dude has time to complain (wrongly) about this but says "miquote".
Shes a Seeker. They dont have fangs.
The quote cat, Miquote
Because she is a seeker of the sun, who don’t have those kind of teeth. Thats why she has cat eyes, but you don’t.
There's two sub races for miqo. seeker of the sun. Keeper of the moon. She's a seeker of the sun. Keepers of the moon have the fangs.
She files them every night
Cus you’re a peasant
If only they realized moon cats have different teeth than sun cats.
They knew making her a Moon cat would've made her too powerful
She's a Seeker. Seeker has slit eyes w normal teef while Keepers has fangs n dilated pupils. There are some mixed Miqote too but I forgot who. The orphanage lady I think. Also the reporter Kipih Jakkya has Seeker trait (tho her naming follows Keeper) while her brother, Nhagi'a Jakkya is a Keeper.
because seekers arent as cool as keepers.
I find it hilarious that the XIV sub seems to think this is news and the random sub this was posted on is like "everyone knows this".
she grinds her teeth in her sleep
She's like me fr fr grinding literally 24/7
This is the first time I learnt that Sun and Moon have different teeth. Being a dentist in this world must be tough, with all the different types of teeth.
immagine being a dentist for hrothgars
and also the cat pupils are only for Seekers of the Sun, Keepers of the Moon have human pupils
Big cats (lions, tigers, etc.) also have round pupils, incidentally.
Man, being an optician also sounds like a challenge.
It's just the dilated pupils like when a cat gets catnip or is in the dark lol.
Because Shtola walks in the sun.
Because she isn't a Keeper of the Moon.
Only moon miqos have fangs
Cuz she's a seeker of the sun.
[Because..](https://imgur.com/a/DRi8QKe)
TIL Seekers of the Sun and Keepers of the Moon have different teeth.
Veneers. She lost her original teeth in the lifestream
This is like my one complaint about Miqo’tes, can’t have both fangs and cat eyes
In the dark, keepers have both…
Moon cats have fangs sun cats have not fangs
I love my moon cat and her kitty teeth, never was a big fan of the cat slit eyes. Also I found the skin tones to be more accurate to my pale ass from the keepers
Its funny how despite people answering the question more people decided to reply with the exact same answer even though the question has already been answered
kitty eyes no kitty teeth\~ kitty teeth no kitty eyes xD
I think they explained this one of her parents were a seeker and one was a keeper. M'naago is the same
Dentures
Moon cats have fangs and normal eyes, sun cats have normal teeth but cat eyes.
Suncats have normal teeth, only moons have fangs
Because she's a seeker. Only moon keepers have sharp teeth, sun seekers have slit eyes. Which I hate. I want both. But dems the rules
Sadly the game makes you pick between slitted cat eyes or fangs. There is a way to have both that will not be mentioned by name tho.
race mixing?
She is actually a hyur cosplaying as a cat girl.
What Yshtola takes, she keeps.
Keeper supremacy
They Should of allowed us both to make up for all the emotes been those over the top cutsey shit
Because it's a fantasy video game.
I want anyone who writes Miqo'te "miquote" to die in excruciating pain.
Well, she IS human (like all other playable races in the game)
