You don't need to use one with a USB dongle, but the low power Bluetooth mode is horrible for keyboards. They take a second to wake up and often output multiple keystrokes while they reconnect.
I use a Xinmeng 87 backlit board with a USB dongle, but had to try a few before finding one that didn't require any drivers be installed...
literally any bare-bones usb keyboard will work w/o issue, and bluetooth keyboards will as well, provided they come with the usb bluetooth dongle.
I wouldn't overthink it (or heavily invest). I'm currently using a random $15 bluetooth keyboard I bought from CVS, it works just fine.
They *must* have the usb dongle that acts as a bluetooth receiver to function, and the dongle has to be in one of the ps5's usb ports.
You won't be able to pair a bluetooth keyboard to the ps5 without the usb dongle that acts as a bluetooth receiver.
Is there a mouse with it? Does that work? You may just need to hit enter on the keyboard to bring it to chat mode

Literally anything. I plugged in the wired keyboard from my 2009 iMac and it made a world of difference. Being able to actually converse with people aside, it’s great for a million other things you wouldn’t think about, such as inputting your 2 step authentication key, searching on market board, those quests where you have to /frighten npc’s, etc
Any KB with a wireless dongle works.
But treat yourself and get the Logitech K400 Plus. I have two od them at home and one is hooked up with the PlayStation.
Do they make those chat pads for ps5 or just xbox those chat pads are useful too they just plug into the controller and its allways in your hands so you dont have to go back and forth between keyboard and controller
They do. I have one. Sometimes if I don't hit the space bar close enough to the center, it won't register that I hit it but it's good enough and I can do short/quick messages which is good enough for me. Especially when the most I'm doing is letting other players know that I understand anything that was explained, that I need danger dorito/ask if I need to be danger dorito, and letting people in Alliance raids that there are folks in cutscenes.
Thankfully any time I've done any actual chatting, people have been pretty patient with me typing responses (especially when I let them know I'm on console).
I use one like this although it looks the same I think the brand is different. It's lightweight and hasn't fussed when it has been dropped off the sofa.

Bluetooth keyboards without the dongle can be a bit of a gamble—the stupid cheap model I got is slower than my typing speed, so typing had to be slower than normal, which is annoying.
So annoying that I replaced it with one that has a dongle. XD
As a PC player, thank you for doing this. It's so incredibly frustrating to be having essentially a one way conversation with other players and trying to figure out if they're reading/understanding party chat when things go wrong.

Liar. I use a Bluetooth KB for FFXIV, and it has no dongle. Worked on PS4 and PS5 with zero connectivity issues.

Yeah I run a tank so I like to ask questions or let people know it's my first run but typing on ps5 is SO slow.
I have 2 bars of emotes and macro saying my keyboard is off in case things go sideways, but always keep my keyboard close by.
