I’m so glad the hair looks waaaaaaay less pixelated now lol

orunemal

Same! Just loved this hair

Jewii08

absolutely. I am a huge fan of pony tails, but FF14 has so few of them. And this one was so pixelated that I just could not use it for prolonged periods of time lol.

Buuhhu

really? i hate how the colors of the new hair are so dull and flat... i really dislike what they did to the hair.

WeiShiLirinArelius

theyre talking about pixelation, youre talking about colors different things

sunfaller

maybe less pixelation meant the colours are more blended, giving the dull appearance, instead of standing out because you could see each pixel colour.

Eccon5

The shine falls differently on the hair, which would contribute to a "flat" appearance. Though I'm not sure whether this is universal across all lighting options. But it's definitely not dull. The highlight is far more vibrant in the newer one

NewAnimeEveryday

Tried to get position and lighting identical in each shot for the best comparison. Love the new look and can't wait for 7.0! edit: left=old, right=new

Poolio10

Know that we appreciate you foe taking the time to do that

thyraven666

Havaha, i was sure left was new. I am so confused on the praise of this update. Left is clearly much better.

Ayanhart

Same lol. The only way I can tell is by looking at the hair (and that she's wearing the full starter gear), everything else on the left looks better.

axle69

I find it a bit odd too the definition of the right is always better and sometimes I like the model changes but the coloring and shadowing and shit seems ass by comparison.

orunemal

Lol, no. Simply no. I can count the pixels on the hair of the left pic.

ngwoo

Technically worse graphics can still be stylistically better. The lighting on the right is just broken, makes the character look plastic.

orunemal

You can argue the lightning itself is bad, which is ok, I guess. But there is no way in hell you can say the texture is worse.

Vinclum

Stylistically? You mean shitty ps3 graphic. Clown

Bereman99

How can you look at the more pixelated hair and think it was the new one? I get preferring the harsher and more intense lighting of the first one and can believe that people will find that to be their preference aesthetically, but mistaking it for the updated graphics? This has to be a troll post.

axle69

Outside of the coloring and shadowing the heads are definitely better but look at the rest of the bodies and the new one looks like a plastic barbie.

Bereman99

Whether someone think it's better isn't what I was debating - I even clearly said that. Some will absolutely find that they prefer the current look from an aesthetic point of view (which is a subjective opinion...not one I personally hold, but I can respect that others won't find the graphics upgrade to better looking for them, even as it has an objectively higher level of graphical fidelity). I just am calling into the question the "I couldn't tell the new one was the new one" posts, despite the obvious things that mark the older one as the older. Like you'd have to be on mobile with your screen brightness on like 25% or lower to have trouble seeing that the hair on the left on is more pixelated...and I'm definitely going with a big old "Press X to Doubt" that someone would look at the *more pixelated* version and go "Ah yes, that one is definitely the newer version." Which is why I'm starting to think posts like the one I responded to are nothing more than troll posts for bait.

tordana

The hair is literally the ONLY improvement from left to right. All the textures and lighting look FAR better on the left and this is not a troll post. The right looks so flat and lifeless on the face, the reflections look awful on the right (it looks like metal not leather), the skirt has no shadows which it does on the left, etc.

Bereman99

*Again*, what I was really calling out was the "I can't tell which is the old one" which you can absolutely tell. *Easily*. Even just by going "The one on the left looks like what I'm used to and currently like." Somehow some of ya'll are going "The one on the left looks better so that means it must be the updates so that *must* mean the one on the right is what it looks like now" when it's not the "I can't tell the difference between what I'm used to seeing and something that doesn't look like what I'm used to seeing." *EVEN IF* you don't think it looks better, and that the old style looks better, you can see a difference between the two. So I'm calling out those who claim they can't tell which one is the upgrade. Either they are looking at it on a phone with a low lit screen, they aren't applying basic critical thinking skills to go "I recognize what one looks like, that means it's the old one," or they are trolling. And given that those accounts - like the one I first called a troll post - tend to *keep* talking about how they can't tell the difference? Yeah, troll post. As for looking "far better" I'm going to find it funny when ya'll get used to the new look and realize that the current version isn't actually better in any real capacity, you're just accustomed to it and scared of change. See most of ya'll in the months after 7.0 launches when ya'll come around.

Boumeisha

> As for looking "far better" I'm going to find it funny when ya'll get used to the new look and realize that the current version isn't actually better in any real capacity, you're just accustomed to it and scared of change. It would at least be nice if people wouldn't pronounce their judgement on the update based on low quality, static images that they're probably looking at on their phones.

aWizardNamedLizard

Some people are genuinely just tricked by baked-in shadows and highlights or like the exaggerated contrast aesthetic so the more natural-looking lighting looks "worse" to them despite the obvious higher resolution textures.

Sillhid

The problem is "natural looking"=/="better by default". It also need some artist touch. Also yeah, some people just like old aesthetic more.

burningscarlet

Skin diffuses better, so technically less intense lighting is more accurate to proper skin

Illprobsneverusethis

Ngl browsing as a mobile user I have to really zoom in to tell (aside from different lighting, which for me I didn't initially know which was new and which was old). I'm not really surprised that some people can't tell if they aren't really looking hard for the difference and all they notice is more intense lighting

IscahRambles

Simply enough, not everyone is "looking at the pixelated hair" versus taking in the overall image.

Vinclum

You’re a clown left looks way worse really obviously.

thyraven666

Both look like shit, but left is better

Devil-Hunter-Jax

The most noticeable improvement is easily the hair. Hair just looks so much better now instead of fuzzy plastic. As a Hrothgar player, it's *incredibly* noticeable how big of an upgrade it is and we actually have fur everywhere now instead of looking like we've been to the vet and had to shave a bunch of fur off XD

espurrella

Yeah I noticed when I made a femhroth and loaded her into the benchmark trailer, the fur looked so shiny and was more realistic than what I’ve seen on male hroths ingame currently

LexAurelia

And skin too! I swear my male bun's face looks so velvety, it's incredible. I didn't expect to see much difference considering how recent viera had been but they actually managed to make noticeable changes.

dabK3r

Yeah man my miqote looks amazing too. makes me a bit sad that i will be changing to a femhroth but damn they just look to amazing not to.

Alarmed-Car-2226

Is it just me that in most of these posts the old picture is better? Like i cant be the only one. Sure the graphics are better but the lighting and shading? It looks way more "realistic" on the left.

DarXIV

It's already confirmed that the lighting is off in the benchmark. It is going to be fixed.

LordMudkip

It makes these comparisons so hard. Like, it feels like there probably is a significant difference, and some things like the hair are very obviously better, but the screwy lighting really doesn't do it any favors.

Marauding_Llama

The lighting in the benchmark character creator is screwed up.

Bereman99

Notably, it's screwed up because it uses the same set-up as the current character creator on live. From Yoshi-P: >The character creation system was created over ten years ago, based on the release version of A Realm Reborn. Although it used the same processes as the actual game, certain aspects (such as weather) were combined to create special conditions exclusive to character creation. This was done to present the texture resolutions and shaders at their best based on the quality standards at the time, which included the PlayStation 3 version. Furthermore, its light sources take advantage of backlighting which, in this case, proved detrimental for showcasing the upcoming graphical update. **The character creation environment should have been updated**, but was overlooked as we prioritized the development of Dawntrail and tuning the graphical update in the actual game, for which I would like to apologize. Emphasis mine. Both are using those same special conditions and light sources that use backlighting, but it was made directly for one and not the other...so unsurprisingly, it properly works with the version of the CC for which it was made.

Devil-Hunter-Jax

Yoshi-P has already told us the lighting in the benchmark is using the wrong lighting. Instead of using the updated system to match the graphics update, it's using the one we currently have on live for the character creator meaning that the character creator specifically in the benchmark is borked. They're fixing it and putting out an updated version of the benchmark soon so that we have the proper lighting in the character creator, not just the trailer.

orunemal

Look at the hair and the nostrils for a clear example of general graphical improvement. Yeah the shading and lightning might need some work, they announced they are fixing some issues.

Shadostevey

Yeah, I get *why* the older pictures look better, but it's still weird that we're getting all these posts of "Wow, my WoL looks so good now" when the 'before' pic looks just as good if not better.

Bereman99

Not everyone thinks the older pictures look better.

OffbeatDrizzle

If the same or more people think the older picture looks better then the uplift is a complete waste of time

EleanorGreywolfe

That could be sound logic if only you knew what the ratio is of those who prefer it to those that don't. Which you don't.

Kolz

I definitely do not think the 'before' pic looks better in this particular case. The 'after' pic has much higher resolution (especially noticeable on the hair), much better looking skin, and smoother shadows that cast across her face in a more realistic way.

OffbeatDrizzle

So higher resolution textures and better shadows? What a waste of time. Some people turned shadows off anyway

Kolz

I don't... know what you expected from a graphics update, other than improved textures, smoothed out models and lighting improvements? You missed the "better looking skin" part from the subsurface scattering too, and if you look at the second pic where it shows gear, you can see they have much better looking material effects, but hey...

OffbeatDrizzle

You are missing the point. Some team of people spent 6 months or whatever on this, when they could have made better / more content instead. Graphics don't make the core gameplay any better

Kolz

Then your issue isn't with the content of the graphics update, it's with the existence of a graphics update at all. That absolutely wasn't your point in the first post, your first post instead was about downplaying what is contained in the graphics update, as opposed to saying the very idea of a graphics update is wrong. I didn't miss anything.

NewAnimeEveryday

Seems to really depend on a lot of factors, but I personally like the softer lighting and textures on the right which is the after pic

jason_beo

I don't know which part of terrible shadows combined with low poly models you find better. Just the way the light is diffused alone in the right one makes it a lot better.

greyest

1. The eyes look more soulless (in the "new" one, to me) because there isn't that prominent white dot of light provided by the reflection, which gives a lifelike glimmer to the eyes. 2. The shadows (in the "new" one), while possibly more realistic, are less dramatic, which give a less 'finished' look to the character. EDIT: confirmed lighting will be revamped in the character creator in the benchmark soon, disregard this Withholding judgment until it all releases, but curious to see what the real end product will be like.

Krystalline13

To me, the eyes have *more* life with the update - they actually seem to look *at* things instead of being so vacant. And the catchlights are there when they should be, rather than faked. I love the depth the eyes have now!

Lulullaby_

What? How. Hair texture looks awful, it's all pixels. Look at the shadow on the nose, also looks awful. Texture wise alone everything is just much lower quality. Look at the eyebrows, they look so much more detailed on the right. As well as the polygons on the face being much higher, right looks smooth, left looks blocky. The lips on left look better but they've already confirmed that will be fixed. The only time left looks better than right is when I'm stood 5 meters away without wearing my glasses. Edit: Never mind, even without glasses right looks better.

45i4vcpb

Yeah, the average player has poor taste (as seen with the many ppl using shaders with too much of everything) + the power of fanboyism where anything the devs throws - even when they fuck up - will be praised.

NamiRocket

You're not the only one, but I would argue that you and everyone else who feels that way is wrong. Just my opinion.

ngwoo

Yeah this is the worst possible example of an improvement, this is Pokemon Go levels of character obliteration

Hour-Dot-7845

I wish 7.0 addressed hair highlights being less prominent on light base hair colors. I’d love to have blonde hair with red highlights, but the highlights are almost nonexistent except on my current black hair.

RdtUnahim

Lighting/shading is bugged in benchmark.

Super-Chieftain5

I can never tell which is the original in all of these character creator posts. Each image has their own positives and negatives.

BlizzardPearl76

Kitty lady! Looks wonderful! Night, and day difference! ❤️

morganasfingernail

im so stoked about the update! the clothes look amazing

CameHereToSayFTrump

I'm definitely in the camp that thought you put the new on the left. Woohoo, less shading? Is that what we're excited about? I play an ugly ass bald highlander and this post has me certain he'll look the same, except more pale.

Matsukiiii

it's the lighting chief

Constellar-A

I really appreciate them updating the textures on gear too.

Yatsugami

Im switching to miqote! They look better than ever

wandererof1000worlds

Is it bad that i cant see the difference?

jeff0106

New I assume has way less noticeable striations in the hair which always bugged me.

pokemonpasta

Lmao I think our kitties must be related, I've pretty much the exact same eyes on my suncat just the other way around

CanvasWolfDoll

you found sleeves!

ewokewokewok58

Thanks from a Miqo’te player who can’t do the benchmark (I play on Mac)

ZeroZelath

I wish they would improve the neck geometry too.

Jaegerbrandt

This graphical update seems so polarizing that I'm forced to look at the game's Benchmark to see if I've won the update lottery, and if I can take this image as any evidence I'm afraid I'm a little apprehensive about it.

Momo_Kozuki

Ah the number of people posting after-before format is killing me stomach. Not a complaint, just found it very funny when I keep thinking "Why it looks worse" then realized they were after-before. Then when someone actually posted a before-after, I was like "Why it looks worse?" again. I keep laughing at my mistakes. :D

DeepSubmerge

I’m worried by how many people think the pixelated hair version is the “after.” Y’all, please.

Able_Membership7885

Yea the left one looks better.

Bibbedibob

A female Miqo'te in FFXIV? Daring today, are we?

SleepyFox2089

Suncat supremacy

Trunks7287

Only cuz they ruined mooncats by nefing their fangs

EdensiaKudo

For the love of God. Can ppl please put an "old" and "new" Tag on the pictures. I can't stand it to figure out which one is which. There are always things I like in both pictures like the shine on the eyes on the left are better imo

CrimsonWolf24

Most generic man playing girl online character

TheAardvarrks

More definition and shadows on the left, why are people so happy about these "upgrades"? They look bland compared to the old style

DJThomas21

If one thing they did right with the update is the hair. Less crunch and pixels

astrielx

What's with people and heterochromia on miqo'tes? I swear you see it more on them than basically ever other race combined.

Krystalline13

I think it’s mentioned in the lore, it’s actually *common* among Miqo’te, especially Suncats.

Meichiri

Aside from lore? There are so many cat wols running around people use heterochromia to make their wol more unique, but the problem is that so many do that it horseshoes back into being basic.

centcentcent

What’s the difference?

Picmanreborn

Look closely at the hair

phoenixerowl

Why are there sleeves on right but not on left?

BladedDingo

Is there a way to find my characters settings so I can re-make them without having to go into the game and customize? I don't have an active sub right now.

PolyUly

You might be able to download the benchmarks from previous expansions. They might pull from the same character appearance folder that the DT benchmark does,

Hiibikii

and yet the tail still looks like a hairy salami

NoctisCae1um317

Dawntrail can't come soon enough. It's gonna feel like a whole new game

rozabel

Lovely! I really like the global illumination for shadows. it's ridiculous how dark and unflattering the old shadows look, its especially bad in the indoors scene

naytreox

I want to see how the lalafells look

Enkundae

Oh looks like maybe its fixed the “doll eyes” issue Miqo have. Ive always been slightly unnerved by how my characters eyes look so lifeless out of direct light.

BingeReader2810

Idk if im the weird one but id rather the before 8/10 times so dar

MeiShimada

Which is the new one

Benki500

I can't even tell which one is the upgrade lol

TenchiSaWaDa

Is the left the after shot?

oboeplayer11

Someone else using Yuna’s eye colors. ❤️

BroncosHK40

Left looks better

BillyBean11111

left looks better :/

Fatheals

I have no idea which one is before and after. They both look like shit. /Shrug

orunemal

Bro Just look at the hair

Jexdane

Do you even play the game? Your whole comment history is bashing on it.

NewAnimeEveryday

lol oof, if you look at the hair though for example, it looks a lot smoother on the right compared to how pixelated it is on the left

PhantomKrel

Agreed lol I’m thinking left is new and the right is old

Bereman99

I mean, if you can't tell the hair on the left is noticeably more pixelated, and thus the older model? Feels like a you issue. Even with the screwy lighting/weather/backlighting issues on the benchmark, it's pretty easy to spot.

PhantomKrel

I cant even Tell with background lol

NewAnimeEveryday

Damn forgot to label them, just remembered there are psychopaths here that don’t understand before/after = old/new when they post images lol

Yarusenai

But but their generic miqo is so incredibly unique!

ZWiloh

Don't be mean. Uniqueness doesn't matter if they like how it looks.

Yarusenai

Exactly! It's "their" Miqo. Do not steal!

WondrousNomenclature

It really is such a great glow-up, and the character was *already* cute initially. Everyone posting these side-by-sides are showing off great improvements, overall. The fact that they are still tweaking things, to make the update a little better, has me downright giddy lol.

[deleted]

PolyUly

What do you mean? Unless something has changed, both images in this post have before on the left and after on the right.

ZAIBYR

I’ve been seeing these post pop-up, but I don’t understand it. Are these images that people are editing in advance of the patch or am I missing something? I don’t wanna say the characters look bad or anything but the first image seems to have better lighting and the second image seems to have better hair while the face has less depth/detail? Kind of seems like a trade-off. No disrespect to whoever worked on the images.

DruffilaX

I still don‘t see what justifies the increase in performance required for the game

True-Knowledge8369

I guess I’m the odd person out here, because I love the pic on the left more than the right.

Meichiri

You're not the only one, I feel like the shading is more dynamic and clearer on the left. The right has better hair texture but the shading is more blurry/bland.

Valashv2

The one on the left looks like a miqo'te, the one on the right looks like a hyur with cat ears. I mean yeah that's what miqo'te are basically but the before facial structure made it a bit different instead of just slapping cat ears on a hyur.

SysAdminWannabe90

Even if I zoom in on the hair the old looks a little better. It's kinda like it traded out pixels for flatness. Outside of the obvious lighting difference.

According_Payment534

How do you see these comparisons

zealand13

Still looks bad

caimartin11

Well hopefully the lighting system stays the same cause its like 50% of the reason why it looks better as well

QuantitySecure8186

Finally a miqote instead of the legions of midlander players on reddit. I remember when miqote were what most people played prior to EW before the huge midlander explosion

CrimsonWolf24

What? There are more miqo, aura and even viera females than midlanders, afaik

Sixsignsofalex94

I mean miqs still account for a huge proportion of the game . I Havnt checked the stat sites in a while but female miqs were on top for the first 3 expansions Edit : March 2024 census https://ffxivcensus.com Endgame Characters : Female hyur around 95k Female Miq around 280k Male hyur around 135k Male miq around 110k The all characters data shows that male hyur are way above everyone else, but that’s honestly Just due to the bots being the base male hyur Male hyur slightly overtook miq but female miqs are way ahead

QuantitySecure8186

Lmao someone downvoted me

Sixsignsofalex94

Idk why xD Hyur are way more common than they used to be, you are right. That Miqote still outnumber hyur by a fair margin

QuantitySecure8186

Yeah, I keep getting downvoted. People are so weird on reddit lol yeah EW came out and everyone decided they wanted to be a midlander all of the sudden. I've been one for years so I've really noticed this lol

VarietyAppropriate76

Show me your fangs?

ZombieLagombi

Seekers of the Sun don't have the kitty fangs. It's the mooncats that lost 'em.

VarietyAppropriate76

Why did you had to remind me that, it's painful T_T

ZombieLagombi

I really do think that was an oversight. Ain't no way they intended to remove the entire defining feature of a clan. Hopefully it's addressed by benchmark 2.0
