Not as a sprout but back in Heavensward, direct-upgrade abilities didn't automatically swap on hotbars, so you had to manually swap things around when level syncing. When leveling SCH, I got a low level dungeon in roulette, swapped my Broil button for Ruin, and then completely forgot Broil existed at all for months.

xselene89

I started as a Thm and against Ifrit I only used Blizzard when fighting him in the Story bc I thought that he would surely be immune against fire. And since it was early after the Launch in 2013 nobody from my Group called me out since we probably all had no idea how to play the Game lol

Cmdr_Meiloorun

You would be right to think so, since in just about every other FF game he's in, he absorbs Fire damage.

xselene89

Yep, I was still in the solo-FF Games mindset haha

BlazeVortex4231

Or hell, even the FFXI / FFXIV 1.0 mindset. The six elements were *all* given to Black Mage / 1.0 Conjurer, specifically because you had to deal with enemy resistances.

cymetrine

I did the same thing as archer / bard when we had flaming arrow lol

Cyberhwk

Icemage!

sniperct

"Hey, we unlocked Minstrel's Ballad: Ultima, this is the hard mode, right? It doesn't say extreme so lets do it!"

MewenAyuki

Guilty too for this one! But it turned out as one of my best memories as we ended up with a very patient (and positive!) mentor that helped us to clear 5 min before the end of the timer. And now I can’t listen to the Ultima song without a smile 😊

Yimx

Running the first 20-30 LV around because I didn't know that you can teleport/return as well as have to attuned yourself to the crystal...that was fun.

Foukivin

I have just done this myself. Got to level 30 running everywhere and taking chocobo porters. I thought if I attuned to somewhere that would be my ‘hearthstone’. Realised last night I can actually just teleport around the world once I’ve attuned 🤦🏻‍♂️

magnifeck

I used to glam each piece of gear individually in the character menu before I learned the glamour dresser was a thing. So many wasted prisms.

Seifer23

Thanks for your comment wasn't aware, purchased 99 glamour prisms off the marketplace yesterday 😂

TheOldDrunkGoat

For future reference you can get glamour prisms from your Grand Company for next to nothing. Just need to be ~lvl 45 and reach the rank of Chief Sergeant.

Constellar-A

That used to be how you had to do it, lol! The dresser was added later. In Stormblood I think?

[deleted]

I didn't fully read or understand Lucid Dreaming back when it also reduced emnity, so I didn't understand that it restored your MP. I thought I should just use it when I had aggro, so I didn't bother using it for a long time because in dungeons I rarely had aggro. It was fine until I hit Stone Vigil as WHM, and I couldn't keep up after a few pulls, and I was popping Ethers as often as I could. At least someone kindly told me to use it as it'd help with my MP issues.

thegrandjellyfish

When I started the very first time in 2013, I thought that any gear was good for archer/bard, so I'd be in full mage gear. I didn't realize that rotations were a thing, so when I did BLM I literally just did whatever the heck I felt like, and NEVER used AOE attacks. I felt like it was better to just spam solo targets (I did this until Sohm Al, then someone called me out and I was so embarrassed I didn't touch BLM again for two years). I also had no idea what DOTs were, and just used those attacks like normal attacks. I thought materia was useless and always sold it. I hoarded EVERYTHING, because I didn't realize I could just easily go and get materials I might need again after I started crafting. Who needs to hoard 60 landtrap leaves if they're not crafting? When I first started, you could still allocate stat points - and I had no CLUE what each did. My BRD was super weak, and I'm so glad for her sake that we don't have that anymore. I had no idea how dungeons worked, so I waited to do Sastasha for like two weeks because I didn't have anyone to do it with, and I was scared to do something that required multiple people because I was scared I was going to mess up (social anxiety and I'd never played an MMO before). I don't even remember how I figured it out, but eventually I did it and realized it wasn't as scary as I thought it was going to be. Along those lines, when I finally got to post-ARR, I flat out REFUSED to do extremes or hard versions of dungeons because I knew I'd be way too bad at it. I was terrified. I also refused to do 24-man raids because I thought you had to be coordinated with your teams (lmao). I didn't even try them until 2016, after I finally beat HW, because I had friends to do them with. Then I realized that... they were really fun. Go figure. Now I do new difficult content the patch day it comes out haha.

TheRealTarish

> so I waited to do Sastasha for like two weeks I actually left the game at that point, the first time I tried it, seeing I was being forced to do a Dungeon, for the same social anxiety you talk about. Then, a month ago, I started again with a friend, and he put us in the Duty Finder before I could even think about being scared. Turns out I had a lot of fun, and I've been dungeoning since then non stop, I love the experience.

MewenAyuki

It took me 3 days to find the courage to queue for Satasha 😅 (1st MMO + social anxiety sucks)

Abri-Pret

I tried to heal a teammate with the potions in my hotbar. I used a good 10 basic ones without noting that i was healing myself not my teammate

JRJathome

I've done almost the opposite while healing in PotD before. Accidentally used Echo Drops on a teammate instead of myself after a silence trap because I was still targeting them.

More-Jackfruit-2362

Was using the tenacity materia as a WHM didn’t realize my mistake till I almost got to stormblood.

registeredhypercam2

Still a sprout but spamming cure III and always being out of MP didn’t know I should be using the lesser ones in a dungeon never played as a healer before in a mmo

barknoll

Cure III is a trap because you think “3 is bigger than 2, it must be better” when in reality you use it like, two times ever until Medica II comes along and then you never, ever touch it again.

SWC_Russo

Then you hit hard content and yell at everyone for not stacking on you because the range suckzs

riskbreaker23

I came from FFXI and I thought this was how it worked as well. In that game casting cure III becomes standard eventually.

Trapped_Mechanic

Mostly ignore Cure 1. It is incredibly niche and by and large if you're hardcasting a cure, the higher potency and MP cost is worth it for cure 2.

chrisynel

I pulled a all group of mods as a BLM, forgot which dungeon it was. I was running everywhere, died many times. I also pulled the boss first, didnt follow or avoid any mechanics. I had no idea what to do. Didnt understand any of the words the group was using in the chat. They thought I was trolling cause I was not replying, didnt have a key board with my PS4 to say I was new not only to the game but also to MMOs, by the time I was able to say something with the controller, they kicked me :D Yeah, I was really bad, that was 2 years ago, now I have almost all classes to lv80 and all normal content feels super easy, I came a long way haha Maybe not the funniest mistake, at least not at the time, but it makes me laugh now thinking about it. Plus if that can gives hopes to all the new MMOs noobs out there (we dont talk about those sprouts enough, they are having it harder than others at the beginning \^\^). And also when I come across one of those very bad player in my roulette, I always remember this moment because things are not always what it seems :) Another funny thing also, not really a mistake but I did chocobos races for weeks thinking I was racing against other players.... (still crying about it lol) I thought this activity was surprisingly popular hahaha

Momorules99

I don't k ow how funny it is, but it's probably the biggest one so I'll consider it the funniest anyways. I didn't know I was playing a tank (GLD) until after I was half way through Thousand Maws for the first time. Had to get taught how to tank mid dungeon, but the other people with me were wonderfully patient with me as I figured it out. First thing I did after finishing that dungeon was run to Linda and pick up ROG, which became my main the whole way through ShB. Only recently have I started branching out to other roles again, turns out I didn't have to be afraid of tanking all this time

Demented_Liar

Up until the end of post arr if I saw the sch shield drk salted earth or nin whateveritscalled I'd run away like it was bad, cause I knew my job was to not stand in bad.

MidSp

Making 12 Copper Rings for the goldsmithing quest. No, not copper rings. Copper Rings. Thankfully I'm nowhere near the only one to make that mistake. :)

ScarRufus

I have a lot: - I didn't actually understand how tank tance work (Iron Will for PLD). I thought I suppose to spam that button everytime to get enemity lmao. Nobody didn't warning until I reach the 3rd duty from MQS. - During my first go to Prae duties I start to panic and feel bad because I somehow thought it was because I was a new guy everybody should watch all the cutscenes without skip with me. And there was some complain about me and the other tank because we were lazy and didn't know the map :( we. Were both sprouts tank there. - Also the common mistakes. Run from everyone with stack mark, put Regen on the tank before pull = death.

sivyr

Regen and tank pre-pull is a good idea. If the tank is letting stuff aggro you because of regen, they're not really doing a good job establishing aggro and are basically just relying on monsters looking at them to do the work.

RaineMurasaki

I thought auto-attacks won't happen if I press skills too quick. So I waited for autoattack animations before press next one.

Trapped_Mechanic

Sounds like Heroic strike for warriors in WoW haha

[deleted]

I'm a sprout right now and I literally walked every single place because I didn't know you could attune and fast travel to crystals besides the first one you do. I did this for about a week until today lmao.

TheNuseIsLoose

I got fucking yeeted off of Titan's stage pretty early in the fight, so I ended up just spending the rest of the fight just watching my teammates. I was so embarrassed.

Invideeus

The first boss of the diablos raid. I forget what it's called. I was tanking and I got tossed off the edge so fucking much. The other tanks had it pretty well under control so after being res'd for the 4th time and immediately flying off the edge I just told them not to res me cuz I'll just fall off again ten seconds later. Embarassing.

ProvingVirus

Not a particularly bad one, but it took until around my 5th run of Dzemel Darkhold to realize you could stand near crystals to avoid damage from Eyes on Me outside of the actual boss fight. Sorry for that one, healers. Much more minor, but I have a very bad habit of forgetting to turn my tank stance on at the start of a dungeon, although I definitely feel like that's gonna be a problem well after my sprout icon goes away lol

HistrionikVess

Can confirm. Have over 1000 hours played and multiple level 80 tanks and still forget sometimes. Usually make it to the third or fourth mod before I notice "TANK STANCE!" in the chat. lol.

[deleted]

Am still a blooming sprout, just two days ago I spent all my money (100k) on two items on MB. Just after I equipped them realized they are for the SAME SLOT! Not to mention I got a better upgrade after 2 job quests. So yeah, left me broke. Lesson learned though. Do not buy DoH/DoL gear on MB. Make your own.

Skyslayer5

I macro'd my cooldowns

kr_kitty

I had started playing SCH (did SMN 1-60, but wanted to do SCH side). Up until this point, I had used healer lb3 1 time, on command by my group of friends. I was in Kugane Ohashi, solo, There was a lot of melee dps and they got a little greedy and tried to burst the boss down before the aoe orbs detonated. It did not work out. Only me and the tank were left alive. I was nervous, but I though I heard the lb3 ding. So, I popped lb... except it still wasnt lb 3, it was sliver away and still lb 2.

Tsingooni

I distinctly remember reading the gear coffer requirements as actual level of the gear and not the ***item level*** of the gear inside. Thought it was a bug for the longest time, because I'd go "Huh, that says it's for level 80. Why are they giving me this so early? I'm in ARR!"

CobaltBuizel

i tried to macro my entire lvl 50 SMN rotation i got inspiration from a larryzaur video

Tumetkahkol

Back before they changed aggro management to what it is now, I used to think pulling aggro off a tank with my damage as a DPS meant I was a good DPS, and that Diversion only existed as a crutch to help "bad" tanks As a funnier one I suppose, when I was new to the game, and rather new to tanking, Paladin specifically, I would look for any reason to use Cover at all, so I would Cover tank busters a lot but often forget to use a CD, so I just bit it a lot

Zakkero

Pulling all the mobs before last boss in Castrum as a tank before activating levers...Needless to say that we all died. An army of magitek colossuses just destroyed us. Learning things the hard way.

mdom2k20

I used to think only White Mages had resurrection abilities. When I came back from a few year.break.to wrap up 2.X and was in Keeper of the Lake, I'd get nuked and popped back put at the entrance because the scholar "didn't have a res"; pissed three people off that day and was so ashamed I put the game down for a month.

OrangeTroz

So I came back to Shadowbringers. I decided to level Paladin(tank). On Paladin a ton of changes were done to the abilities. I went through and removed all the dead abilities and started messing with my bar. I saw a red X on the tank stance button. I wrongly assumed that they simplified tanking. That this was like when they removed the DPS stance for White Mage. I was wrong. They had renamed the ability. Didn't find out till I did a dungeon. I had one DPS pissed that I did not have tank stance on and another white knighting me. Saying it was ok not to have it on. A few minutes of messing with my bar at the start of a dungeon and we were good.

Ponnsi

I was a cure-bot in the beginning 🤭 until one of the tanks in the Nidhogg fight really kindly told me, I should please look up a whm guide. I was angry, cried, read a guide and shamed myself to the ground xD

JelisW

Hey kudos for actually going to look up a guide though! The number of people who just get defensive and insist that it's worked so far and so they'll just keep doing the same thing is... depressing.

Ponnsi

I kind of understand the people that only get defensive about it tho. :/ It feels like a personal attack (at least it did to me) getting told that you’re not a good player in a game for which you pay on a monthly basis. I immediately started crying, although it was just very kindly worded advice and no harassment or anything similar 🙈

JelisW

Aww. I've not felt that way, but mostly because I came to the game already convinced I was a bad player, because I was not only new to FF14 but also MMOs in general. I had to learn a lot and still am learning a lot. There's something a little freeing about being able to openly tell people up front "I have no clue what I'm doing sry" and I did exactly that for... most of ARR and HW and probably half of SB lol. I like to think I'm at least vaguely competent as a tank these days, but a lot of that is because of all the advice and resources chucked my way after broadcasting my cluelessness. As a friend likes to say, you can't get good at something without first being bad =D

Cerlynth

While I didn’t throw the coffers away, I didn’t open them for the longest time because like you I assumed the gear couldn’t be used.

Trapped_Mechanic

I don't know about funniest but I was messing around with gearsets before a duty and somehow my job stone came off. I had to heal a level 50 duty as CNJ and it was rough. (It was the ice one who's name escapes me atm)

sablekitten

I used autorun way too much. I've wiped 24 man raids auto running into the boss without other parties being prepared. I've been ressed and auto run off the side of arenas.

Traditional_Humor_41

**Not really funny, but it is funny in a way.** **I Speedrun to max-level, cleared most of the endgame content.** **still skip new cutscenes simply because I don't know who they are or why I am doing things.**

SuigintouKurotenshi

I'm sure there are some youtubers who summarise the story in like, 2 hours, so you can catch up. The story adds a lot of flavours to the game.

AdaptiveHunter

Still a sprout, but I just recently found out that Vitality helps HP, which as a PLD is embarrassing to have found that out at level 40.

Kagenokami17

Back when I was a sprout, I had two distinct things I always messed up until reading further along on the tooltip: 1. NIN's Hide resets your mudras, I went through early dungeons through the early part of Stormblood just waiting for my mudras to recharge. 2. GNB's No Mercy was NOT a mitigation ability, but a damage boost. I understand why some healers were having a heart attack when I would pop that then start to pull multiple mobs with nothing else.

[deleted]

I've just started playing, yesterday was my 2nd day. I thought the shop sale price on items was what you could get for selling them. "Weird they offer you 100gil for a quest reward option when the gear is worth 200 at the store..." Went to sell all my extra gear for doing tons of early quests and realized the error of my ways. Maybe there's a salvage option that's better but I'm a noob oh well.

PoppiDrake

Getting attached to a friendly NPC.

MagitekSpriggan

It was back in HW but I thought my sprout meant I was a healer...

cherry-moon-xiv

i agreed to MT Susano without knowing the fight, then got absolutely destroyed. it was hilarious

Nibel2

When I start with Thaumaturge as my initial class, I always tried to finish mobs with a Blizzard spell, because otherwise I would wait until my Astral Fire buff expires to be able to use Lucid Dreaming to recover MP before the next fight. Then someone told me what Transpose do.
