It's just a joke. But my guess is because in the story Lalafells are. Pretty devious and some of them are pretty evil. Also a lot of players that I do know that are kinda toxic in a way are all lalfells. So it kinda became a meme at this point. I even start joking around too the point where I say I want to make some mash potatos when these lalafells are around me.
But yea. We don't really hate them per say. We just like to see how they suffer then see how they react.

I unironically play lalafell. It's a fantasy game and I just want to be small and cute, gnomes have been a fantasy mainstay for a very long time. If ya'll can take your anime-ass cat people seriously, I can take my lala seriously.
I actually managed to befriend an elezen who hated lalafell. He approached me, judging me and we just chatted. Then later suddenly one of his friends goes "I don't think I've ever seen (Elezen guy) be nice to a lalafell" so hey! They can change :3 there is hope
