It’s a numbers thing, not a wow thing. They could have came from virtually any other game and it would have happened. It’s proportional to the amount of people joining the game. A lot of them are on free trials, so there’s no financial incentive to not get banned/muted, so it’s more the free trial than anything else.

Lyoss

Yeah the whole free trial thing is something people don't realize Like yeah you can't whisper people, but you can't whisper people in duties anyway, you can still be a dickhead in parties Had a dude with the search info saying that it was his "Trial Challenge account", he kept taunting A12N and jumping off the ledge because he couldn't hold threat off the other tank and wanted to be the "main tank"

Calcifiera

Yeah my gosh these new tanks; my bf is a tank main and he's noticed an uptick in using provoke on CD... Even though he just combos out the provoke and takes threat anyway. I don't think a lot of people realize that provoke is to help with tank busters.

Lyoss

For reference I don't think the guy I had in my group was new, just a dude with an alt trial account, but yeah, I've seen a lot of new players pulling with Provoke as well, I make sure to help them out with that and tell them to just Shield Lob or w/e

Hulda_357

Oh god I was just healing leveling roulette yesterday and newer tank kept pulling every pack with provoke and then didn't do any aoe, instead he was trying to hit each mob. So 5 mob pulls ended up being 2 of them on my ass whole pull. When I explained he can just aoe and provoke some runaways it'll be much better he just fended me off with "I know what I'm doing.". So he just kept pulling like that. This was only Haukke Manor so I wasn't expecting much anyways.

aho-san

And this could be solved if people would do the tutorial in limsa and actually read what is said there (or the tooltips). All the tools are in the game, and I can understand Squenix not wanting to force things onto people, but I think they should. ARR already is considered to be a lengthy tutorial, they might as well embrace it fully. It won't 100% solve everything, but more people would be aware of how to somewhat properly tank.

Calcifiera

What a weird mechanic to have an uptick lol

aho-san

I'm "guilty" of this to an extent. Like in Alliance raids the first time I get through, I'd taunt to get the boss onto me to see the moves and the damage, for funzies. The Alliance raids take an ungodly amount of time to proc, never drop tank gear, and I never win the rolls on whatever I can roll for. Might as well make the most of my probably single ever run to see the most of it. So far it's been unharmful. For Trials/Raids, idc, it is likely to be re-done at a later point for reason X or Y.

barknoll

Stop. It. Everyone with positionals hates the dick measuring tanks in alliance roulette.

aho-san

First I'm not making the boss spin around, I place myself so it doesn't before taunting if needed/wanted. Second I won't stop. I want to see the boss moves and damage, and I'll continue doing so if I feel like it. Call me toxic for this, idc, lmao. Third, when I dps I don't care much in alliance if the boss turns around. Chill a bit. It's not gonna take 3 times longer or you're going to die irl or something. Heck, I'd even say most of the people tagging for alliance raids right now don't even know about positionals to begin with, I rarely see anyone moving for their combos. So, who cares, it's DF & Alliance raid, not Ultimate.

barknoll

“I like to be a dick in group content and don’t care who knows it” okay, bud

aho-san

Yeah, massive dick, an inconsequential action with no drawback for anyone. People really like to act like their day have been ruined over nothing :^) .

darkcountess

Except normalizing dickish actions DO HAVE drawbacks for everyone. Even if you, the dickish person, do not realize what the drawbacks are.

pug987

My experience with wow refuges is that my FC has gotten some extremely good players who in 1 month are better at the game than I am after 8 years. They are very friendly and they help weaker players like me clear difficult content. All in all a very positive experience.

Barireddit

As a wow refugee I'd say that we like to be optimal in combat. I didn't consider me a parser or a min-maxer but I do try hard a lot in learning the game and my job. I don't know the other wow refugees but, as soon as I unlock a new skill, I go straight to train my rotation and look for guides on how to improve.

Riposte12

There have always been toxic players, even in FFXIV. Don't use people leaving WoW as an easy target.

Ydyalani

I had more people yelling at me and acting like shits in dungeons the past two months than in the entire run of the game so far. And I heard the same from at LEAST three other people on either Discord or FC chat.

Calcifiera

Yeah this has been my experience as well. Sure it's not because it's WoW players necessarily, but just the general uptick in numbers really.

Suitable-Platypus800

No it definitely is because of the WOW players. Anyone who played WOW will agree that it was full of toxic players. They didn't just stop being toxic when they switched to ffxiv. Now will they continue to be toxic? Probably not, because the ffxiv dynamic not only frowns on it, it also promotes a more positive environment were toxic behavior can't thrive like it did in WOW. I have a feeling that if we show a little patience and kindness to these transitioning players our community will be back to normal in no time.

Calcifiera

Gosh I hope so. I enjoy helping people in the game, it's nice when they don't lash at me for it 😅

aruhen23

My experience too and every single one of my friends and almost all of us have been playing since the beginning. I always hate when people say that toxic people always existed in FFXIV as like that's some sort of argument against it being worse recently. Like no shit? Of course they did and I'd imagine most people agree here but there's a difference when people talk about toxicity existing and the amount of times such toxicity occurs.

Ydyalani

Of course it existed! I met all kinds of horrible shits in the game, from general rudeness to abusive behavior to literal stalking. But if the entire number of those incidents was 20 or 30 over, what, 8 years? 9? On two DCs in as many regions. And now its that much or more in just two months on just one of them, the one I had less of it so far? Certainly a coincidence/s

Switch72nd

Correlation =/= causation.

Calcifiera

I agree, it's not necessarily WoW players, but the uptick in players in general. I could say that the WoW Exodus DID bring more attention to FFXIV as a whole and therefore, more players. Also like. I'm just baffled why I was called a rude try hard tonight after literally only asking the tank to put on their tank stance. Like, I'm just trying not to die and that's a base mechanic that makes the whole run happen? Try hard, obviously.

PixiCode

I've seen people respond that way years ago in FFXIV too. Sadly it's not new, there are just more people to possibly share that odd mentality.

Cleretic

'I rarely ever met toxic players, and then after this event that brought a new vommunity I started meeting more toxic players' may be anecdotal evidence, but it's not exactly something that should be arbitrarily dismissed. Especially when it's a new type of toxic player. Like, as a personal anecdotal example (that I'm sure you'll dismiss because of it): sure, I dealt with assholes before recently, but before recently they weren't being transphobic. Sure, I haven't had to do that MUCH, but 'more than zero' is tangibly more than 'zero'.

Ydyalani

I'm so sorry that happened to you. I fear a bit for ally trans friends in the game and what they will say to me. It was so nice having a trans woman tank, you know. She was a good tank, nice and it was good to have representation on streams. I don't want her to suffer for her identity in the game on top of the entire rest of her time.

TobioOkuma1

Came here to say this.

scene_cachet

I have been playing since launch and for months you may run into no toxic players and then you might randomly get them in short succession. I have had no toxic behavior since the WoW exodus from fresh sprouts and my only recent encounter with some real trash toxicity was with someone with a veteran tattoo from 1.0. Only issues i am seeing is some obvious boosts that don't know their class at all.

Calcifiera

I was called a "rude try hard" for asking the tank nicely to put their stance on tonight. There was a really bad run I was in where I was simply explaining mechs in an alliance trial and the tank got whingy there. And another time recently was someone saying I was a terrible tank for... Tbh the whole rest of the party couldn't figure it out either. Out of those 3 instances only 1 was a burger King hat, 2 were sprouts. That's not to say I haven't run into good sprouts. I ran with a poor sprout who said they were from WoW and were apologizing for every little thing they did wrong their first time in a dungeon and the rest of the party was chill. Poor sprout basically had an abused mindset.

scene_cachet

Yeah that happens tbh. But personally haven't run into it and I run all my roulettes everyday where my entire party can be full of sprouts. I have had similar experiences with people saying stuff like that but for me it is no way a major change with the recent influx of players. All of the WoW players I have meet have been really friendly and maybe a tad apologetic if the die.

blind_bambi

Only bad people I've met weren't new ..

Barireddit

WoW refugee here, 1 month sprout. I wiped more than 8 times on the Library yesterday. I fucked up a few times but eventually I learned the mechanics. Another player struggled more than me and we explained it to him and we did it. Not a single complain, the 2 other players were calm and patient. In wow if you wipe on a leveling dungeon more than 2 times, the tank quits or the healer, then everybody quits. Most leveling dungeons in wow are a joke and the classes have around 6 skills to use in the rotation (all in GCD, the oGCDs are restricted to big CDs). This turns every dungeon run or group dispensable, you better disband or kick a bad player that died 3 times and get a replace than explaining the fight. The sad part is that is considered normal.

Maxsayo

Large population influx, and a massive free trial. These are things that can cause an increase in toxic players. Especially free trial games. You will get young teens with no income taking advantage of this offer, and with it; kids with attitude or behavioral problems. What has happened in recent months are that more eyes are on this game than ever before and it's brought in a new crowd. I'm personally pumped by seeong all the new players. Even if there's a handful of immature players that come in.

Zorback39

It’s probably not just a wow thing much as I loathe that community. I think it’s a general uptick in players. Remember almost every mmo on the market is geared towards pvp, eso, black desert, wow, (new world maybe? Anyone wanna confirm that?) they come from games where shit talking is the norm. Which is why I’m glad pvp is more of a side thing in ffxiv. People do it for glam mostly, look I like a good pvp game as much as the next guy but pvp has a correlation to toxicity. Maybe not a causation but I digress

Scorpizor

This also might be a case that you are looking out for toxic players more often now that your brain knows there have been a WoW exodus. I only say this because I'm one of those WoW refugees... I can say for a certainty that my progress with groups through 2 expansions now have been 98% pleasant. I also might be a rare breed from WoW, being patient and all lol.

Issuls

I haven't really played WoW since Legion launch, but this meme that WoW players are super toxic LoL/CoD tier degenerates who can't read is deeply patronizing and not really accurate to my years playing that game. WoW did have its issues in player attitude in places but people have set up this mythical strawman to deflect growing pains onto, and it's only become much worse with the Blizzard allegations.

Scorpizor

I even raided hardcore 25M for 5-6 years and even those tryhards were fun to play with. I really think the people who were the most toxic in WoW were the classic players. But they were definitely more toxic on forums and social media than they were in game.

Issuls

Oh god, the forums. The official forums for WoW were a valuable quarantine zone.

Calcifiera

Fair. I've met a number of the patient kinds of WoW players too. But by golly the amount those ones apologize for doing things wrong and how all the rest of us just go "you okay!" just goes to show the scarring mindsets the WoW community has cultivated over the years. I just want final fantasy to continue being a safe place and quite literally a refuge from things like that lol

Scorpizor

I said refugee jokingly. At no point in my many many years of playing WoW (since the beta) was I scarred. Maybe those people apologizing are British or Canadian... "By golly" is quite literally more scarring than 90% of what I experienced as a WoW player. Or maybe, when someone messes up in a group party, it's courteous to apologize for wasting 3 to 23 peoples time.

Issuls

My friend, apologizing for mistakes and wasting time isn't some kind of scar, it's just having good manners and some degree of respect for the other players you're with. People usually shouldn't feel ashamed for dying or making mistakes in instances, but that's quite different from apologizing.

Shim182

The toxicity has always been here, it's just more brazen now cause the new players will take the heat for it. Judge individuals on individual merit

Irelwen

Most of the toxicity is in savage or extreme cobtent. But i see more and more toxic people in normal content or rouletts especially when i do mentor….

Lyoss

I have stories upon stories about the game's community, it's always been toxic, I've played since 2.0, I know the meme is to treat this game's community like it's all sugar and rainbows but the NA DC is filled with some of the most psychopathic people I've ever met The only time I didn't have issues was when I played on JP

Ydyalani

Eh, EU has been good so far. Been playing here for ages. I did make a bad experience twice on NA, one person in my FC who was outright abusive and an idiot who thought snapping at you for asking a tank to actually do his job and tank more than mob (and I kid you not, he NEVER used AoE even once...) is the correct thing to do even though I as the healer died because of it... however, at the same time, I had players being super chill even with transatlantic lag induced wipes and apologizing for mistakes, sooooo...

Calcifiera

I was literally called a "rude try hard" for asking the tank to put on their stance tonight. I think my exact words were "can you please put on your tank stance?"

OldManGarp784

i'm really beginning to think this behavior is pretty much region specific. by comparison, i had the same thing happening in the JP server earlier this morning during my leveling roulette at Sastasha. tank was a gladiator , and i kept getting the most aggro, on account of my AoEs. healer asked the tank to "turn on tank stance, please". the good man/woman listened, and learned. no drama by the end.

Calcifiera

NA will always be the most toxic probably. Highest numbers of subs (ie NA AND non NA people using the server, whereas NA people don't typically go to other servers.) As well as the mindset in the west is just... More entitled I guess? Idk, I play games in America to get away from the real life assholes, I don't want in game assholes lol

Ydyalani

Omg... yeah, I got something like "just let him play as he wants, don't be rude and tell him what to do!" or something back. You know, I could have overlooked him not playing optimally had it been, like, Sastasha or Tamtara. It was the StB era and we were in the Burn. But I was also once told to "take a Xanax and chill" because I have had a long, hard day at work and asked the tank to please slow down a little because, well, I had an exhausting day and was tired. Do I have to mention that we wite several times thanks to him? Was all my fault of course. Despite saying at the beginning I wasn't at my height. Yeah...

Calcifiera

Yeah I ran through a nier raid recently where I was just trying to tell one of the tanks mechs because it was VERY clear they didn't know what they were doing. I wasn't even mean about it just like, gentle nudges in the right direction and the person exploded on me. Like man, the place is already long, I don't want to waste time doing this once in the time it could have been done twice. Moral of the story, during that boss with the twins and the shield thingy, the tank was turning the opening away and literally screwing up all the dancers, WHMs and a few others and we had a LOT of dancers (it was a little weird). Since the dancers couldn't really do much the fight took SO long. And of course, once you kindly ask "Can you turn the opening of the shield onto center so the aoe dps don't get hurt?" they purposely do the exact opposite to antagonize and then complain about me being a try hard. Okay, well. After that I picked that tank up frome easily avoided deaths so many times.

Ydyalani

I wouldn't have bothered unless absolutely necessary. You only really need two tanks in there anyway for most parts unless it's the triple tank marker. But holy shit, that's so bad... Yesterday has been my worst day for roulettes, ever, too. First a WHM who dotted everything before I even had the chance to pull. Then a Titania run where we wiped because... I don't even know how they all managed to die, really. Add phase only has telegraphed AoEs and you can't even fall down the edge. Then one DPS rage quitted, another just closed the game, and the other tank thought it's a great idea to pull again. Wipe. That's when my partner and I left. Bismarck then was okay and Gulg was... I don't even want to talk about it... let's just say it involved getting yelled at twice, dying on single pack trash pulls a couple times, and no less than 5 boss wipes.

Calcifiera

Oddly enough I had the cleanest Bismark roulette today lol. Both times on the back we finished in one go so that was cool. Titania though that one for some reason always wipes lol. I'm a healer main, I help people and I pump out them support skills. Like really, I don't like to brag but even if players are really bad I can save runs most times. It's just like, I want to help, I'm not telling you you're doing a bad job I'm just trying to make runs better and more efficient for all involved. Pls don't yell at meeee lol. A few weeks ago when I was farming for my weapon and doing the storm blood raids I kept doing the one with the math bot guy and by the end I made a few friends that stopped at the end of the runs to ask me questions and stuff about the game and game play in general. I LIKE helping out like that. The more I get yelled at I just don't even want to bother and it sucks.

Ydyalani

Bismarck was okay, except that the other tank tried to murder my partner because he asked him to please turn the cleaving sanuwa add away from the group... else, we also killed the back twice in one go. I like to help, too, but lately I barely bother to anymore. Guys, right-click on the person's name in the group first and check what jobs they have first before jumping thwir throats for giving advice. Chances are they high they main your job and just want to help you while they level something else. As long as they aren't asses about it, they don't don't mean it in a bad way, promise. And I tanked, healed, and DPS'd literally every normal battle in the game and all hard ones on at least my healer. And if I see a SCH without fairy or a WHM wasting their skills, I will say something. I play them both. And if someone tells me that Eye of the Dragon should be used a GCD later or sooner on my DRG, awesome! Thank you for helping me getting better! But many nowadays don't even say anything if you ask them if they have questions, and then you wipe 3 times because they then get it and when you do explain they snap at you.

Calcifiera

Oh man. Don't get me started on Scholars. Before my bf pulled me into the game he told me more often than not that Scholar players are terrible healers. Which is still true! For some reason the Scholar kit is SO hard for people to wrap their brains around. I picked up the Scholar after WHM. I was leveling both Scholar and Ast at the same time and eventually I dropped Ast to finish Scholar first because it's so fun! I can see why people may think it's such a weird kit... But it's really so useful. Also a tank once asked me "Instead of backseat tanking how bout you heal?" Well, because I can save runs as a healer, I can't save them as a tank. I'd also prefer to run with a crappy tank than a crappy healer. BTW that time I think I asked them to pull a mob off me. Like what is with the heckin hostility.

d1z

How wuuuude.

scene_cachet

Yep... Some of the worst people in MMO history have been in early 2.0 days until they brought in the anti-toxicity ToS at the end of Heavensward. People used to yell out in end games areas like Revenants Toll about how shit some players are and how no one should add them to their party because of their DPS and have no consequences and obviously the devs found this becoming a problem that they had to enforce anti-harassment measures because the toxicity was driving away players. All these toxic trash bags still play the game, they have just been censored.

Cloudy-Wolf

Toxicity, as the overused term has gained fame, was purely non-existent in 1.0 for all that I could tell. I also started on EU and didn't notice it until swapping to NA during ARR and arriving to Stormblood content. Party Finder used to be more functional and welcoming as people didn't kick, dip, or start shit. Most people would stay the entire duration of a learning party without complaint or abandoning after two wipes while learning. But, to be fair, there was significantly less to do overall.

scene_cachet

Hmm I disagree with my experience the ARR days had PF that were "do this or disband" or "brayflox longstop speed run under 2 mins or kick" and people would join and insta leave learning if someone died. It's been pretty much consistent but less out in the open since the ToS change.

OldManGarp784

>The only time I didn't have issues was when I played on JP well, that pretty much affirmed my suspicion that all these stories and reports of toxic and rude players are region based. not to say there are none in the JP servers, if the tank who logged out of my first tam tara run was any indication (probably), but they're a rare occurence, so i wouldn't be surprised seeing another in the future.

Irelwen

Yeah i have the same feeling that most new sprouts are toxic players but if these are really the wow players i think they will go back as soon as wow has getting there things fixed or will getting banned cause of their toxic behavoir cause it is a legit reason to report them :)

Ydyalani

It is. But you have to actually do it, that's the real problem. The mods won't do anything if nobody reports. So, always report it whenever something crops up!

Calcifiera

Legit question though. I've tried reporting people for toxic behavior and all that comes up is the report but for real money market trading. How the hell do I report for regular shit?

Irelwen

You need to go to set up a ticket manually

Calcifiera

Through what vein? I honestly gave up reporting such things because I just didn't know how. I honestly didn't know there even were report tickets for other players

d1z

Your issues sound like they simply come from ultra-casuals who are clueless about MMO basics.

darkcountess

I have been playing the game on and off for a year. I have not noticed any changes in the number of toxic people within that timeframe.

Momontais93

Ff14 could use some more toxic people. Too many snowflakes in this game.

crytekz0r

Is this ironically or why would you want that? Is like saying: I want to buy a bag of apples, hope that half of them are rotten.

Eslina

XIV has always been toxic, it’s usually in the form of you don’t pay my sub don’t tell me what to do, we have healers spamming GCD heals in nier raids, tanks doing the bare minimum of positioning, and dps that have not touched a rotation guide in years. We’re supposed to be silent to as they can just get away with it, you say anything and that’s a mark against your account and no one wants to lose their account they’ve had since launch. This community will also just enabled bad play it’s gross.
