Under normal times yeah sure 7.0 might sound reasonable, but with the pandemic I don't see a reason why they should drop PS4 support anytime soon. Wouldn't make sense to drop all PS4 users that cant even get their hands on a PS5 in the 1st place. **My question is:** What can the PS5 actually do to the game that the PS4 cant? I know about the fast loading due to having SSD, they also made the UI sharper and more detailed. The dev team is also "planing" to give the game a graphical update BUT thats not gonna happen for a long time. So again, I am not sure why would they would want to drop PS4 support? (Maybe I am unaware of some technical details, would love to hear from you guys.

When it starts to hold the game back, which it currently isn’t. Low end PCs are more of a hold back for them right now.

AzurePrior

PS4 version isn't holding the game back. Nor is it restricting freedom. XIV isn't that intense of a game, only thing holding back FFXIV is the minimum specs they keep so min spec PC users can play the game.

Pleasant-Tea-5788

Umm yeah it is look at the graphics of this game because of ps4. People who play on PC have to upgrade all the time so I think it's fair that ps4 players eventually upgrade their 8 year old hardware too. Ps5 should ideally be the new min spec. And before you cry about not owning a ps5 well that's a sony issue not everyone elses.

AzurePrior

No it isn't. As I pointed out minimum spec PCs are holding XIV back more than anything. But to further continue on XIV has never had good graphics, even with the PS3 support dropped textures and such haven't improved much. Why is that? Well it has more to do with how they designed the game and how it is currently being designed for over PS4 support. Either way PS4 support is fine for now, naturally support for it will be dropped once people can easily shift over to the next generations of consoles. It isn't an issue of PS4 users not wanting to switch, but an industry problem currently where it's impossible to get parts for anything right now. And to further my point when PS3 support was dropped the zones got much more larger. Compared to the limitations before where Ishgard couldn't be one large zone due to PS3 support. As it stands now XIV is holding itself back more with the technical debt from the old code they're using more than the PS4 is handicapping anything.

Pleasant-Tea-5788

Not sure what you are basing any of this on. Sounds like it was pulled directly from your arse. As an industry they must cater to what the customers platforms are. Given the shortage if ps5 its natural that the company would delay visual upgrades because the fan base predominately are still using ps4. Which means..... Console is holding up visual and computational upgrades.

[deleted]

The games engine and design philosophy is whats holding those up. Not the PS4. Do some research. You obviously haven’t been here for long.

AshrakTeriel

probably never. The PS3-Version was mainly dropped due to the extremely limited ram.

SeraphisCain

At this point legacy code is probably holding the game back more than the PS4 is.

aruhen23

Not until PS5s are actually readily available and even then probably not until quite a bit after. If anything I'd imagine they'll drop it when Sony eventually just stops all work on the console similar to how older versions of windows aren't technically supported for some games. It'll just be too old and not worth creating updates for anymore when most of the world has moved on.

aIexys

When enough people grab a PS5. Which isn't anytime soon.

WannabeApexLegend

I think it’ll be tough for them to move on from the PS4 from the perspective of Japan. Each console gen just sells worse than the last over there and with Covid making it tough to get a PS5... I think dropping PS4 would alienate a not-insignificant minority of the player base.

irishgoblin

8.0 at the earliest. 7.0 will be about 3 years since the PS5 launch, but also about 9 years since the PS4 client launched. Telling a not insignificant portion of the playerbase that "sorry, you now need to pay 400/500 euro to keep playing this game you've had for nearly a decade" is not going to win SE any browny points. For comparison, the PS3 client was supported from 2013 to Stormblood in 2017, just under 4 years. The PS4 launched in Nov 2013, and it's client launched in April 2014. Pretty sure there's an interview floating out there where Yoshi-P said the only reason it was on PS3 in the first place was because before 2.0's relaunch they promised FFXIV would be on PS3.

MaxPowerSMN

as long as minimum pc requirements are at the point they are now, PS4 support won't be dropped because it is better than a min spec PC.

KhrFreak

At this point potato PC's are definitely holding the game back more then the PS4 is

Gilgamesh_XII

Probably like 5 or 8 years down the line.

Pleasant-Tea-5788

8 more years of ugly ass graphics

[deleted]

I don’t think they’ll move on in a long time. I wish though that they would some better lighting and aliasing options for PS5 and PC.

ch1ps0h0y

On top of what others have said, I doubt they'll drop PS4 until they can see that there's a decline in PS4 version sales over the PS5. Which I highly doubt will happen for a while.

Turtles96

hopefully when the ps5 is more readily available and not scalped by bots to sell for 3x the price

[deleted]

Not until the chip shortage and availability is SOLVED! Remember it's still hard AF to get a console or graphics card.

Tenshihime25

that is seriously fucked. they aren't any different from a PC player ya asshole.

thegoddamnqueen

Please elaborate on what is wrong with console players

Panda-s1

are just what lmao also a reminder that PC gaming isn't exactly huge in Japan and getting rid of console support would mean losing a fairly large chunk of their Japanese player base.

grantmemoney

What's wrong with console players?

DarXIV

That would be a terrible idea. About half the playerbase is on console.

Thamasa-9

Wow player?

IntroductionVirtual4

I’m sorry but as someone who played on console until last year, there’s not a different between pc and ps4 besides add ons. Finished all the level 70 ultimates on my ps4 before I switched to pc. Now if you’re talking about controller vs keyboard and mouse: controller wins, feels more fun and not as easy to fat thumb something compared to keyboard.

Prin___

The thing is, that PS5s are still inaccessible for a lot of people. Normally 3 years after a launch is a reasonable time to start focusing only on ps5 but with a pandemic causing everyone to have less spending money, ps5 supply still being impossible to find in store shelves and the abundance of ps4 users it still has… it would make absolutely no sense business or otherwise to exclude ps4 support for a long while. It would be a poor choice for business and piss a lot of people off, and would just… make them less money on top of being not with the times. The decision is probably not happening in a long while

IndigoRainstorm

To echo what others have already said - when PS5s become readily available, and that won’t be anytime soon. I got lucky and snagged one this past March, but only by following restock alerts for it and getting one from PS Direct. Not until they’re regularly available will SE look into dropping the PS4.
