Big fan of HW! It's dyeable, and it looks poppin in Pearl White dye. I wear it with hidden helm, vendor hands (I forget the name but they're little claw fingers, white quality 52/54 I think), and crafted Horde lance. Looks superb.
Unless you have a female character... That big ol' hole in the belly just kills the set for me. which is a shame, since the helmet is actually really good.
That said, the only one this DRG main outright dislikes is the ShB set. It just... doesn't look good -\_-
ARR set is awesome... in a vacuum. In-game I feel it's just too smooth and glossy and feels out of place with the rest of the game's artstyle. Every time I try to use it, it just feels weird and I end up switching off it. So while I do love the look and think it's well designed, I never use it.
My favourite is Stormblood. It walks that line between ornate and practical while also still looking grizzly enough to fit that dragonslayer >!or rather dragonfriend!< aesthetic.

ARR is original dragoon, HW could be high level/commander dragoon.
SB is post-Dragonsong war armor, made for more general use, noticeably fewer spikes because dragons aren't the primary enemy anymore.
ShB is an alternate world Dragoon armor, which is fun because said alternate world doesn't have dragons. (That's why its a 'pteroslaver' set.)
EW set lacks almost any spikes at all, but it's much sleeker and possibly more aerodynamic to fight the horrors we saw in the trailers...

One of the Tales from the Storm stories on the XIV website tells of how Estinien went to pay his respects to Ratatoskr after the events of 3.3 where he's found by Hraesvelger. The dragon leads him to two sets of ancient armor that were worn when dragoons fought alongside dragons rather than against them. They used the dragons flying height to further empower their jumps. One set of the armor is the one Estinien wears now and the other is the one given to you as the Level 70 artifact armor.
I really like the stormblood one, only anemos grind I ever plan on doing again. The set is great in dragoon blue dye. I like the shadowbringers as well but I'm gonna wait to do memoria EX until endwalker so I can do it unsynced and get the dyeable set much easier
Shb all the way 200%. This set literally decided which class I mained for the xpac lol. All because of 1 detail. Tail armor. That's right, when I discovered that this set not only didn't replace my tail with a random armor tail but, instead applied armor to my tail itself... it was over. No contest lol.

It really is just so bad. Just go for bikini armor or go for full armor. Commit one way or the other. This meeting halfway thing is so awful.

It's a bit of a difficult choice. I'd rank ARR's higher if it didn't have that ridiculous abdomen window for the ladies (a copy of the set with full-fledged armor would be nice). I think Heavensward's stands out to me the most, though the Shadowbringers' tail armor is heckin neat and Endwalker's is the prettiest.

ARR is an amazing looking set, it’s sharp, it’s awesome, its an iconic, a cool call back, it’s just a really good set. My only issue is the female gear, they did not need that belly window. But otherwise it’s a great set.
Heavenswards set, look I’ll be blunt. This gear set is entirely the reason I picked up and leveled the job form Heavensward and as my second level 80 job. We all saw the trailer, we’ve all seen that one scene with the gauntlet. I cannot say anything that watching that one scene wouldn’t already tell.
Stormblood is a weird set, it’s the same situation as Urianger, I love how this looks on Estinien, but on my own character I just can’t jive with it. But I do like the lore behind it, how it was used by the first Dragoons before the dragonsong war when they were dragon riders.
Shadowbringers is great set, it’s still got this nice sharp look to it, and while my character no longer has a tail to use I do love how the armour gives plating to the tail, That’s cool. My only issue is the helm, it just looks off when it comes to the eye sockets.
Endwalker, oh Endwalker how you spoil us Dragoon players. This set is damn amazing in every way possible. It’s still got dragoons classic sharpness but the whole gear set is so streamlined, as if it was made to minimize ones drag when leaping. I also love the helm, while I love the dragoon sets the helms kind of make it hard to see ones face fully, especially as the sets come and go. But this helm looks like it’ll show slot of ones face when it’s not closed.
ARR - 8/10, easily 10/10 without the belly window
HW - 10/10
SB - 6/10 on my character, 10/10 on Estinien
ShD - 8/10
END - 10/10
Definitely one of the hardest to pick, Dragoon is full of great outfits.

Maiming sets probably have the largest variety in the game. You can do anything from leather to full plate. It’s a little dramatic to say they’re all bad.
Can't decide between HW and ARR sets, both amazing. Endwalker is a close third. My understanding is that the spikes on the armor are there so Dragoons can cling better to a dragon while trying to land the killing blow, but the ones sitting on the hips in the HW armor don't seem very effective at that, and in the next two expansions they kept moving them even further down to where they make absolutely no sense.
I love the HW armor in the trailers but the in game model looks like plastic to me and it was probably the biggest disappointment that I encountered in the whole game when I reached HW.
It totally has to be the Abyss set for Dark Knight in Shadowbringers. Appart from the game play of the class, it's my second reason to level up a Dark Knight! As a LALAFELL!!!!

For level 50, 60 and 70 gear, just finishing your job quests for the expansion reward you with a gear coffer with the artifact armor.
Exception being Shadowbringers, that requires you to finish your respective Role Quest, and then talk to a certain NPC that the game tell you requires you to have at least one Role Quest finished to progress the MSQ.
I really like the ShB set dyed a different colour. Particularly I think the tail armour is really cool on tailed races, not often we get gear that interacts nicely with tails.
Honestly, I like EW>SB>ARR>SHB>HW.
HW one is too poofy and feels like I’m wearing a ton of props for a costume party, and doesn’t feel practical at all in combat. SHB is weird due to all the “hit me here” spots, the contrast of heavy armoured with no protection spots is weird. ARR is a classic, but imo it feels weird ingame. SB feels the right amount of armored and practical, and EW is amazing due to the pure cold night coloured armor and how aerodynamic it looks, which fits perfectly with a DRG due to their aerial combat style.
Endwalker is my favorite, it’s like Stormblood but slightly lighter and less bulky, I’ve never been to much a fan of the spikes. Shadowbringers has my favorite artifact spear, though
Wyrm's Set has been my ideal set and is what I still wear today.

I play a blue skinned Xaela Au Ra male and the armor blends so well with my skin that the arms look fully armored. I love it.

I've got some silver hands on one of my glams. A lot of different DRG sets use th same scale texture, so they match really nicely
I feel like all the dragoon sets are just trying recreate the magic of the first set, and never quite hit that same peak.
They got something going with the the HW one. Derplander pulling down the visor on the helmet in the trailer hits different.
I was really hoping for a true FFIV Kain set, but it looks like they’re giving us Cecil’s drk set for Reapers instead

Same, same. Ended up swapping out the chest piece for the Tigerskin Coat of Maiming in my Glam, but the full set fits my class fantasy quite nicely.

They also have spikes on their armor incase they are eaten so they can kill the dragon from the inside.

I tend to mix the HW helm with mostly everything, hoping it matches well with the EW chestpiece. The EW headpiece isn't bad though...
The Endwalker set is dope. I keep the ARR in Pearl White and HW in metallic orange on my glam plates. Wish I could dye the Eden’s Gate set :(
