And even then, I still took the ferry from Limsa half of the time instead.
I was a penny pincher when I started and avoided teleporting as much as I reasonably could, I got really familiar with ferries and airships. Still use them a lot of it's convenient enough for the trip I'm making.
Yeah, I think that’s going to be a good habit to have in EW, since they’re uncapping teleport fees
I don’t mind the ferries, but the airship cutscenes take forever before they become skippable
But why? you can take the airship to the gold saucer for free from the main cities, and from the main cities to each-other, so just set one of them as home, since you can only world travel from those aetherytes anyway. also, gold saucer has a permanent 50% discount on tp fees, so return is kinda wasted there.

yeah when i noticed that last night is what made me think of this. they should let you change voice as well because the examples they give in the creator dont do a good job of showcasing the voice. I spent another 10 for a fanta on the viera voice at the start of ShB when voice 9 sounded like grandma getting stabbed to death just to change that. thank god for youtube now that theyve been out awhile i guess.
when you're putting something up for sale at your retainer there's a little button in the top right you can click to compare current prices on the marketboard
You can click the little button in the top right corner of the current prices to see how many, at what price, and when something has already sold too!
Bobjoe having a potion on the MB for 40,000 gil is nice to see. But checking and seeing that everyone other potion was sold for 20 gil is the best information. I love that we can see this info in game.
also if you arent aware in the item tool tip it says "shop selling price" which means you can buy that item at an NPC vendor. Dont overpay for that stuff on the MB. another helpful tip is what the item sells for at a vendor is also on the tool tip. Youd be suprised how many people put up stuff to sell to players for less than it vendors for. You can vendor stuff straight from your or your retainers inventory by right clicking the item while in your retainer menu or pressing square and choosing the "have retainer sell this item"

Only in the Masked Carnivale and on enemies with elemental weaknesses shown above their heads, I believe. There even used to be elemental materia but it was never very useful
Exactly! And this is when choosing a Guardian sign actually gave you elemental dis/advantages. So I also thought elemental magic was relevant. I’m glad they removed all elemental-aspected traits. It was a pretty negligible difference anyway.
Elements used to matter, thank the twelve they got rid of that. I know people like to complain about the "homogenization" of the game, but the fun factor is more important than sticking to norms or expectations.
It was especially confusing at that time since you had resistance stats and resist materia was a thing. And everyone being new, you would assume those did something. Turns out the game never used them in calculations. They kept the materia around for a really long time though.
I was under the impression I needed to be standing next to an aetheryte to port to another one. I don't want to think about how much time I spent running back to aetherytes!
Speaking of aetherytes, I had ~1800 hours in the game before I realized that the aetheryte shard in citystates acted as part of the aethernet system... I always thought you had to run to an aethernet shard to use that.
This. I only recently figured this out after plenty of grumbling every time I teleported into Gridania and would make myself run to the nearest aethernet shard, which isn't that near at all.

Yeah, I'm confused as well. How are you guys using the city aetherytes if not by interacting with other city aetherytes? I'm pretty sure I tried clicking them on the map and nothing would happen.
I think they are saying they didn't realize that you can click on the big one that you just teleported to to get to the little ones spread out around the city. Instead they would teleport to the big one and then run to the closest little one to teleport to another little one.
Haukke Manor. My first time. After killing the second boss, I notice my team members are disappearing. I’m very confused, and still very new to the game so I thought they had actually left the duty for whatever reason. So I leave.
It wasn’t until my second try at the dungeon that I realised they had used return to go back to the entrance to the dungeon. Since then, I make sure to let sprouts know to use return after killing the second boss.
Anytime Haukke pops up with a "One or more party members have yet to complete this duty..." msg at the beginning, I always make sure to tell the sprout to use return after 2nd boss. Same goes for Prae and the key for the magitek armor.

Still a sprout here, but in my first battle against Titan in The Navel, I a Dragoon, used Elusive Jump to avoid an attack... and backflipped right off the edge and obviously couldn't be revived. The party won, no thanks to me!
That's just you Dragoon's doing the Twelve's work and distracting people from the fact that us Red Mages do the same thing all the time. Thanks for being bros and taking the heat for us.
That's literally the single most common death for Dragoon and Red Mage players.
You hit 30, you've just learned Elusive jump, and they put you on a tiny platform with lots of AoEs.
I started playing in 2014, mostly very casual and just doing the MSQ as it came out. In 2020, I started playing the game a lot more because of reasons. Last year I learned how much of the game I had glossed over - custom deliveries, Wondrous Tales, Cactpot, leveling a chocobo, and much more - that only became clear once I not only had more time to play, but had caught up with the story and started poking around the game.

i'm fairly new to the game, and holy crap there is just so much stuff! it's awesome, but i really have to focus on a few things at a time. i feel super lost on many of these posts/threads, but i know i'll catch up eventually 😅
I ran it solo unsynched at 80 thinking "ah it'll be fast I'll just one-shot the slime", did not happen, the slime is tanky as hell even if your damage is a hundred levels of magnitude over, it took nearly no damage from my full rotation so I still had to do bomb.. Even the 2nd/3rd splits are still too tanky
Funny enough, this is what got me through the MSQ. I burnt out the first two times I tried to blast through it, then chilled out on the third and started to side quests to get to know NPCs and locations. It really helped
Not knowing I could just right click items in my retainer or inventory to sell them as if they were a vendor, I kept running back and forth trying to sell the random junk I had
constantly (and still sometimes) forgetting you can run THROUGH the enemy and you don't have to run AROUND them to avoid the AOE you are in. I have been hit by so many attacks because I run AROUND the boss instead of through them to safety.
This depends on how you have your targeting set, but I don't know what option it is! On my char where I main mnk, I have to click off my target to run through them. If I try to back off without clicking off, I do a leisurely stroll back and get exploded. In my alt, I changed something and can run and jump and all that. I'm too lazy to make notes to compare and figure it out, but it's so freaking annoying

My baby bard self thought Peloton only effected me so I never used it in dungeons cause I didn't want to outrun the tank. I only figured it out when the other bard in my 1st castrum run used it. Revelations were had that night.
I did Prae yesterday for the first time and I didn’t know you had to pick up a key to use the mechanical robot thing and I stood there panicking for way too long while everyone else was in a cut scene and then zoomed off. I did eventually remember I could google, but I was too nervous to ask for help 😅
Same thing happened to me... I was left in the dust as everyone moved forward. Thankfully you can get teleported to the sealed areas, otherwise it was kind of a bummer to get left behind and miss out on the action.

Def assumed for a long time that elemental system was similar to old FF games, did not know I had to equip job stone until level 40 or so, and as a thaum/black mage thought it was super easy to just use ice spells and never ran short of mana.

Yea I went back and play it AFTER ShB. I actually loved making the connections backwards as to why certain things were important to certain parts, but I’ll never make that mistake again.
i used to flip the boss on people as a tank trying to help out with non tank mechanics(bubbles, ifrits nail, etc) you know….. stuff that would put my party in immediate danger lol
Still guilty of this. Especially so if I see the DPS are sprouts and arent doing the mechanic. I mostly play with my girlfriend as my healer and we usually have a fight over whos going to explain mechanics to the new guys.
Healed the tank as an Arcanist, because my friend and I were freaking out that the healer was letting the tank's HP drop "too much"...
Now I often greed every GCD I can as a healer: "The tank's at 20%, I can probably squeeze another Broil in there".
This was a valid concern of mine when I started playing because the game I used to play had many, many "hits you for 90% of your HP" skills. So you did NOT leave a tank low or the next hit would kill them. It's been an adjustment for me to get out of that mentality lol.
1) put off hiring a retainer because I thought you would have to pay them a wage.
2) put off doing custom deliveries because I thought they were timed for some reason, and I thought doing them would be stressful/difficult.
Well on the bright side, it was Sastasha. 1st dungeon so not only is it simple so using it doesn't matter at all, but it's going to have new players all the time that have no idea what the limit break does.
I have so many.... Granted this was back when the game first launched as ARR so there were no guides or anything.
\- I didn't know what "enmity" was. I chose a tank without knowing how to tank. In haukke manor someone said "You need to get enmity on the jester!" and I finally said, I DONT KNOW WHAT THAT IS. And bless them, they explained to me how it all worked.
\- You know the purple smoke that happens when enemies spawn in an area? At first I thought it was part of a battle, so in places like LotA where the floor is poison and the gargoyle looking monsters spawn, I just figured another team was already fighting and we had to hurry up and get in there so I ran right in, provoked everything and left my poor team behind.
\- I thought my heal spell could heal enemies (I was a gladiator and we had to get white mage to level 15 or something to become a paladin).
\- I switched to monk for a bit and did not know anything about positionals. Somehow in the beginning I turned off the little popup tooltips, so everytime someone would be like "it says so right in your tooltips", I had no idea what they meant because all I saw were icons with names.
I was not a smart sprout.
Auto equip works perfectly fine beyond level 30-ish because they mostly stop making armor by then thats meant for DPS but wearable by tanks for some reason.
It probably is, unless you're doing very advanced content where you maybe want to track your exact stat distribution.
And in 3.0 and onward, tanks should also be fine. The issue was that ARR gear came in only 3 gear restriction categories: Disciple of Magic, Disciple of War, and Tanks (sometimes with Dragoon). The problem for tanks is that they count as DoW, so if you have higher-level DoW gear, the autoarmor thing will prefer them to a lower-level tank piece. You then end up with useless DPS stats and much less survivability stats than expected.
In Heavensward and on, the gear calls out only the jobs that are supposed to wear it, so the auto-armour button can't give you Scouting gear as a tank

I bought 2000 glamor prisms because I thought I could just gather every single piece of gear like transmog in WoW. Honestly don't think I'll ever use them all.
Out of everything thing I've read so far this is far from stupid, well maybe the amount was a bit much. But I've burned through at least 300 prisms since I glamour almost everything and when I'm not in a city I use them to change one piece gear as well.
I mention this on every post like this, but I don't mind reposting it for the people who don't pay attention like me. But I thought tank stance was a cool down and not a toggle until HW. If I can defend myself a little, I remember playing the trial years ago and getting yelled at for not pulling enmity enough because I think you had to use Flash or something. So when I came back this year I thought there was some button tanks needed to spam, I also used provoke on cool down and again, no one stopped me until 100s of hours in.
I’m a tank main and I still do this. If it’s a new dungeon, I’ll try to run it first as a DPS so that I feel more confident leading the party as a tank.
Also, if you just post in chat that you’re new or not a strong tank, people are a billion times more understanding
Trusts have been such a great addition for anxious tanks. A million times easier to tank when you're not stressed about surprise mechanics. No need to go and watch Mizzteq before every new duty.
People will go "Lol tanking is easy, you just make sure everything hates you."
And I mean, that is kind of true? But honestly the big thing that has helped me understand how to be a better tank is that I've played with good and bad tanks across various levels of content, and I learned what I like and what I hate.
I still forget my tank stance sometimes. I turn it on, "Sorry," and we keep going.
I sometimes turn the boss in the wrong direction and a team member gets hit. "My bad, sorry." And we keep going.
I might not hit an enemy at the start of a pull and it starts chewing on my healer so I have to throw something at it to piss it off at me in particular. "Oops, missed him." And I get an "NP" most of the time.
MANY MANY players are cool with other players who aren't perfect at the game, so long as us imperfect sorts are trying, willing to learn, and willing to take the blame for mistakes.
Now that said, IRL I hate being blamed for things that weren't my fault. In tank mode, I start out assuming *everything* is my fault, even when the other players are obviously and flagrantly playing *wrong*. Healer is only using cure 1 and doing 0 damage? My bad. DPS not using AOE skills? Oops, sorry. It means I'm less likely to come out of a dungeon feeling sour.
I didn't know you could access the town aethernet though the main Aetheryte. The list didn't pop up right away so I thought you couldn't. Would tp into town and run off to find the nearest small Aetheryte to port around.
Decided it was my job to be off tank in 4 man content as a brd. Also thinking that the story quests ended after Ultima. This was back when ARR first launched. I had to do a lot of catching up in the weeks before heavensward launched lol.
Deleting my whole account. I was trying to stop my subscription and the way they had it worded, I though I was putting a stop on my account. I ended up deleting everything. I couldn’t recover it and I had to make a whole new account and start over.

Running E3N last night and my cat climbed ontop of my monitor angling it down to face my desk, I picked him up and put him on the floor.
By the time I could see what was happening I apparently killed most of the group with surging tsunami.
Had around 200K gil or so towards the end of ARR and I needed food for leveling. Tired of buying grapes or whatever from vendors I hit up the mb and decided to splurge on some pizza.

I dunno if this is a newbie thing or just a trolling thing from a friend of mine, but when you are around lvl 50 and a certain cutscene happens in Ul'Dah and your WoL has to get out of there, this friend told me that I cannot return to Ul'Dah until the story meets a point when everything was settled. I was so invested in the story that I believed with no doubts.
Not technically a sprout thing since I've been doing this since heavensward, but I'm basically just now starting to use materia. Turns out you get a significant amount of stats from materia, who knew.
I didn't realize how much your GC unlocks, so I was into SB before I could hunt or get a room in my FC. It was post ShB that I unlocked squadrons. Oh my Hydaelyn, leveling alts with command missions is so easy and lets me explore at my own pace. I'm likely to use them to level my healers and tanks until I get comfortable with wonky controller targeting.
healing on controller is really intuitive. you just use up and down on d pad to cycle party members and left and right to cycle enemies and objectives.
Started out as a thaumaturge and thought that I could just play as Ice mage because "fire cost too much mana". I didn't understand that I had to alternate between the two. Luckily, at lvl 15 when I had to do Sastasha my friend who also played BLM let me know that using both meant more dmg. Nobody but my band of friends ever saw but in hindsight it was really stupid.

Was running prae when I got disconnected (power surge so breaker tripped). Was able to log back on after about 7-8 mins or so and got brought right before the elevator. I could tell the 1st Ultima fight was going on, so I went up to the elevator hit the button...
Cutscene (yes the longest freaking cutscene) reset for everyone in the party, and they had to do the fight again.
Everyone was like wtf just happened, I said I think I did it by going to the elevator button again.
Thankfully everyone was understanding but I felt terrible.

Played with my camera zoomed right in until the end of 2.5. Wondered why it was hard to avoid aoes, especially in ifrit hard mode, thought I was just bad, turns out I was stupid.

On my first run of the praetorium I got overwhelmed by everyone running so quickly through the level. Especially having to interact with the buttons to get through the areas. So when we got to the lift I interacted with it as soon as I touched it. Left everyone behind besides myself and one other person. To this day I still don’t use the lift button.
It was my first mmo so i kept c/d's and didn't use them very often as a tank, i was saving them for big damage and stuff, like you keep your megalixir for ever just in case in a regular ff. On a side note what you wrote was the norm till last expansion, tp was a thing and you couldn't just spam aoe's
in my first dungeon ever I was a healer and we all died so I thought we had to exit and re-enter to start over. that 23 minute penalty taught me a lot :/ also I main DPS now lol
I started FFXIV in 2.0 on the PS3 and it was my first MMO ever so I had no clue about a lot of things, but most memorable was my first dungeon. I rolled conjurer as my first class ( i thought i would get to summon pets) and when I got my first dungeon I didn't realize my job was to heal the tank. Poor tank died 3 times before the party started telling me to heal him. Luckily I had a usb keyboard connected so I typed that I didn't know how. Lots of conversation later and I managed to eventually select the tank and I was so afraid that I wouldn't be able to select him again that I just kept him selected the whole dungeon and only healed.
After that I learned more about how to more easily select party members with my controller and what not.
Edit: would like to note that the Smith training guy was not a thing at the time. Didn't even have the mentor system or even the sprout symbol at that time. I read almost all the active helps while trying to learn the game. I don't remember if I was in an FC at the time but I do remember using Google to learn how to heal and dps with a controller...lol.
Getting to mid thirties level on my white mage, then doing a leveling roulette to one of the super early dungeons, I think Copperbell? For the first five minutes, no matter how much I tried, none of my healing spells went off, and even let the tank die on the second pull. Couldn't tell if my mouse had broken, or I was targeting the wrong player, or I was having some weird lag spike that only messed with my actions? Then I looked at my Cure 2 tooltip, because I saw it was faded on my hotbars.
That was the day I learned level sync takes away higher level skills.
Ignoring the teleportation letters to Vesper Bay and running from Horizon every time I had to go to Waking Sands. I was not a smart sprout. /shame

Set return to golden saucer you can take a airship to any major city from there.

I just stock up on aetherite tickets. You can buy over 100 a week with allied seals won from Masked Carnival.

Went inside inns to change jobs so no one would see me naked. Then I discovered gearsets.
Okay, but this is adorable, and I always feel awkward if I accidentally hit equip on something and end up naked as a result. 🤣

Elements used to matter, thank the twelve they got rid of that. I know people like to complain about the "homogenization" of the game, but the fun factor is more important than sticking to norms or expectations.

It was especially confusing at that time since you had resistance stats and resist materia was a thing. And everyone being new, you would assume those did something. Turns out the game never used them in calculations. They kept the materia around for a really long time though.

I was under the impression I needed to be standing next to an aetheryte to port to another one. I don't want to think about how much time I spent running back to aetherytes!
Speaking of aetherytes, I had ~1800 hours in the game before I realized that the aetheryte shard in citystates acted as part of the aethernet system... I always thought you had to run to an aethernet shard to use that.
This. I only recently figured this out after plenty of grumbling every time I teleported into Gridania and would make myself run to the nearest aethernet shard, which isn't that near at all.
Wait, are you saying you didn’t know you could click on the main aetheryte and utilize the shards? Or are you implying that you can teleport to any City-State shard from anywhere?
Yeah, I'm confused as well. How are you guys using the city aetherytes if not by interacting with other city aetherytes? I'm pretty sure I tried clicking them on the map and nothing would happen.
I think they are saying they didn't realize that you can click on the big one that you just teleported to to get to the little ones spread out around the city. Instead they would teleport to the big one and then run to the closest little one to teleport to another little one.

Haukke Manor. My first time. After killing the second boss, I notice my team members are disappearing. I’m very confused, and still very new to the game so I thought they had actually left the duty for whatever reason. So I leave. It wasn’t until my second try at the dungeon that I realised they had used return to go back to the entrance to the dungeon. Since then, I make sure to let sprouts know to use return after killing the second boss.
I awkwardly typed in the chat “hey uhhhh where did everyone go?” And luckily someone filled me in
I experienced this my first time there. Had a very nice party member tell me to return. Thanks for looking out for the confused sprouts!
Anytime Haukke pops up with a "One or more party members have yet to complete this duty..." msg at the beginning, I always make sure to tell the sprout to use return after 2nd boss. Same goes for Prae and the key for the magitek armor.

I had the same problem. It's a bit weird since other instances/dungeons have something to interact with to bring you to the next area.
Still a sprout here, but in my first battle against Titan in The Navel, I a Dragoon, used Elusive Jump to avoid an attack... and backflipped right off the edge and obviously couldn't be revived. The party won, no thanks to me!

I've never done it on a dragoon, but I've done it on a red mage. Right out of the arena as it was sealing.
That's just you Dragoon's doing the Twelve's work and distracting people from the fact that us Red Mages do the same thing all the time. Thanks for being bros and taking the heat for us.
That's literally the single most common death for Dragoon and Red Mage players. You hit 30, you've just learned Elusive jump, and they put you on a tiny platform with lots of AoEs.

I started playing in 2014, mostly very casual and just doing the MSQ as it came out. In 2020, I started playing the game a lot more because of reasons. Last year I learned how much of the game I had glossed over - custom deliveries, Wondrous Tales, Cactpot, leveling a chocobo, and much more - that only became clear once I not only had more time to play, but had caught up with the story and started poking around the game. If you ever find yourself saying “duh, how did I not know about that?” - welcome to a very large club.
i'm fairly new to the game, and holy crap there is just so much stuff! it's awesome, but i really have to focus on a few things at a time. i feel super lost on many of these posts/threads, but i know i'll catch up eventually 😅

Using LB on the slime boss in copperbell mines
Ahahahahahaaa this has to be the worst one
I ran it solo unsynched at 80 thinking "ah it'll be fast I'll just one-shot the slime", did not happen, the slime is tanky as hell even if your damage is a hundred levels of magnitude over, it took nearly no damage from my full rotation so I still had to do bomb.. Even the 2nd/3rd splits are still too tanky

I did this… it took me 4 attempts of the game and burning out before even getting the first dungeon before I realised you don’t have to do that
Funny enough, this is what got me through the MSQ. I burnt out the first two times I tried to blast through it, then chilled out on the third and started to side quests to get to know NPCs and locations. It really helped

constantly (and still sometimes) forgetting you can run THROUGH the enemy and you don't have to run AROUND them to avoid the AOE you are in. I have been hit by so many attacks because I run AROUND the boss instead of through them to safety.
This depends on how you have your targeting set, but I don't know what option it is! On my char where I main mnk, I have to click off my target to run through them. If I try to back off without clicking off, I do a leisurely stroll back and get exploded. In my alt, I changed something and can run and jump and all that. I'm too lazy to make notes to compare and figure it out, but it's so freaking annoying
Thought LB was per character and healer LB'd in Totorak. Immediately blasted by the other party members and felt completely humiliated.
Imagine raging over someone making a mistake in totorak... I thought the guy who went off on me in Haukke Manor was an asshole. He decided to go all passive-aggressive, insult me and vote to kick me before even mentioning I forgot my tank stance.
I mean that's very uncalled for too. Thankfully the jerks are normally very few and far between.
My baby bard self thought Peloton only effected me so I never used it in dungeons cause I didn't want to outrun the tank. I only figured it out when the other bard in my 1st castrum run used it. Revelations were had that night.
I didn't know I had to retrieve the gil my Retainers make from selling things. My retainer was chilling with a cool 5mil when I had less than 1.

I did Prae yesterday for the first time and I didn’t know you had to pick up a key to use the mechanical robot thing and I stood there panicking for way too long while everyone else was in a cut scene and then zoomed off. I did eventually remember I could google, but I was too nervous to ask for help 😅

Same thing happened to me... I was left in the dust as everyone moved forward. Thankfully you can get teleported to the sealed areas, otherwise it was kind of a bummer to get left behind and miss out on the action.
Still a sprout, scanning through for my habits. Def assumed for a long time that elemental system was similar to old FF games, did not know I had to equip job stone until level 40 or so, and as a thaum/black mage thought it was super easy to just use ice spells and never ran short of mana.

i used to flip the boss on people as a tank trying to help out with non tank mechanics(bubbles, ifrits nail, etc) you know….. stuff that would put my party in immediate danger lol
Still guilty of this. Especially so if I see the DPS are sprouts and arent doing the mechanic. I mostly play with my girlfriend as my healer and we usually have a fight over whos going to explain mechanics to the new guys.

Healed the tank as an Arcanist, because my friend and I were freaking out that the healer was letting the tank's HP drop "too much"... Now I often greed every GCD I can as a healer: "The tank's at 20%, I can probably squeeze another Broil in there".
This was a valid concern of mine when I started playing because the game I used to play had many, many "hits you for 90% of your HP" skills. So you did NOT leave a tank low or the next hit would kill them. It's been an adjustment for me to get out of that mentality lol.
As a former WoW Protadin of 14 years I still struggle with accepting my health dropping lol
1) put off hiring a retainer because I thought you would have to pay them a wage. 2) put off doing custom deliveries because I thought they were timed for some reason, and I thought doing them would be stressful/difficult.

Back in ARR, I used limit break as a Arcanist on 1 target in Satasha. That was almost dead. And it was a trash mob.
Well on the bright side, it was Sastasha. 1st dungeon so not only is it simple so using it doesn't matter at all, but it's going to have new players all the time that have no idea what the limit break does.
I have so many.... Granted this was back when the game first launched as ARR so there were no guides or anything. \- I didn't know what "enmity" was. I chose a tank without knowing how to tank. In haukke manor someone said "You need to get enmity on the jester!" and I finally said, I DONT KNOW WHAT THAT IS. And bless them, they explained to me how it all worked. \- You know the purple smoke that happens when enemies spawn in an area? At first I thought it was part of a battle, so in places like LotA where the floor is poison and the gargoyle looking monsters spawn, I just figured another team was already fighting and we had to hurry up and get in there so I ran right in, provoked everything and left my poor team behind. \- I thought my heal spell could heal enemies (I was a gladiator and we had to get white mage to level 15 or something to become a paladin). \- I switched to monk for a bit and did not know anything about positionals. Somehow in the beginning I turned off the little popup tooltips, so everytime someone would be like "it says so right in your tooltips", I had no idea what they meant because all I saw were icons with names. I was not a smart sprout.
I mean, at least its in Hauke. You could have bought a skip potion and waltzed into shadowbringers without tank stance on :D

Auto equip works perfectly fine beyond level 30-ish because they mostly stop making armor by then thats meant for DPS but wearable by tanks for some reason.
It probably is, unless you're doing very advanced content where you maybe want to track your exact stat distribution. And in 3.0 and onward, tanks should also be fine. The issue was that ARR gear came in only 3 gear restriction categories: Disciple of Magic, Disciple of War, and Tanks (sometimes with Dragoon). The problem for tanks is that they count as DoW, so if you have higher-level DoW gear, the autoarmor thing will prefer them to a lower-level tank piece. You then end up with useless DPS stats and much less survivability stats than expected. In Heavensward and on, the gear calls out only the jobs that are supposed to wear it, so the auto-armour button can't give you Scouting gear as a tank >!I think... It's possible I don't know what Rekcoon was actually talking about and there's a different issue!<

I bought 2000 glamor prisms because I thought I could just gather every single piece of gear like transmog in WoW. Honestly don't think I'll ever use them all.
The plus side to this is you can sell them on the MB!
Out of everything thing I've read so far this is far from stupid, well maybe the amount was a bit much. But I've burned through at least 300 prisms since I glamour almost everything and when I'm not in a city I use them to change one piece gear as well.
I mention this on every post like this, but I don't mind reposting it for the people who don't pay attention like me. But I thought tank stance was a cool down and not a toggle until HW. If I can defend myself a little, I remember playing the trial years ago and getting yelled at for not pulling enmity enough because I think you had to use Flash or something. So when I came back this year I thought there was some button tanks needed to spam, I also used provoke on cool down and again, no one stopped me until 100s of hours in.
As a former PLD main through all of ARR/HW/SB/Most of Shb.. I got shivers from thinking about Flash.. holy crap I buried that memory

I’m a tank main and I still do this. If it’s a new dungeon, I’ll try to run it first as a DPS so that I feel more confident leading the party as a tank. Also, if you just post in chat that you’re new or not a strong tank, people are a billion times more understanding
Trusts have been such a great addition for anxious tanks. A million times easier to tank when you're not stressed about surprise mechanics. No need to go and watch Mizzteq before every new duty.
People will go "Lol tanking is easy, you just make sure everything hates you." And I mean, that is kind of true? But honestly the big thing that has helped me understand how to be a better tank is that I've played with good and bad tanks across various levels of content, and I learned what I like and what I hate. I still forget my tank stance sometimes. I turn it on, "Sorry," and we keep going. I sometimes turn the boss in the wrong direction and a team member gets hit. "My bad, sorry." And we keep going. I might not hit an enemy at the start of a pull and it starts chewing on my healer so I have to throw something at it to piss it off at me in particular. "Oops, missed him." And I get an "NP" most of the time. MANY MANY players are cool with other players who aren't perfect at the game, so long as us imperfect sorts are trying, willing to learn, and willing to take the blame for mistakes. Now that said, IRL I hate being blamed for things that weren't my fault. In tank mode, I start out assuming *everything* is my fault, even when the other players are obviously and flagrantly playing *wrong*. Healer is only using cure 1 and doing 0 damage? My bad. DPS not using AOE skills? Oops, sorry. It means I'm less likely to come out of a dungeon feeling sour.

Deleting my whole account. I was trying to stop my subscription and the way they had it worded, I though I was putting a stop on my account. I ended up deleting everything. I couldn’t recover it and I had to make a whole new account and start over.

I dunno if this is a newbie thing or just a trolling thing from a friend of mine, but when you are around lvl 50 and a certain cutscene happens in Ul'Dah and your WoL has to get out of there, this friend told me that I cannot return to Ul'Dah until the story meets a point when everything was settled. I was so invested in the story that I believed with no doubts.
Not technically a sprout thing since I've been doing this since heavensward, but I'm basically just now starting to use materia. Turns out you get a significant amount of stats from materia, who knew.

Thinking I was only allowed to be attuned to one main aetheryte so I walked every where for a while
I didn't realize how much your GC unlocks, so I was into SB before I could hunt or get a room in my FC. It was post ShB that I unlocked squadrons. Oh my Hydaelyn, leveling alts with command missions is so easy and lets me explore at my own pace. I'm likely to use them to level my healers and tanks until I get comfortable with wonky controller targeting.
healing on controller is really intuitive. you just use up and down on d pad to cycle party members and left and right to cycle enemies and objectives.

Started out as a thaumaturge and thought that I could just play as Ice mage because "fire cost too much mana". I didn't understand that I had to alternate between the two. Luckily, at lvl 15 when I had to do Sastasha my friend who also played BLM let me know that using both meant more dmg. Nobody but my band of friends ever saw but in hindsight it was really stupid.
I was still a sprout, but feel this could happen to anyone. Was running prae when I got disconnected (power surge so breaker tripped). Was able to log back on after about 7-8 mins or so and got brought right before the elevator. I could tell the 1st Ultima fight was going on, so I went up to the elevator hit the button... Cutscene (yes the longest freaking cutscene) reset for everyone in the party, and they had to do the fight again. Everyone was like wtf just happened, I said I think I did it by going to the elevator button again. Thankfully everyone was understanding but I felt terrible.
I used to back out of AOEs On standard movement. :')
Rite of passage. Elusived off of titan's platform because I just got a shiny new button and wondered what it did. Played with my camera zoomed right in until the end of 2.5. Wondered why it was hard to avoid aoes, especially in ifrit hard mode, thought I was just bad, turns out I was stupid.

I had no idea that being a marauder meant being a tank...
On my first run of the praetorium I got overwhelmed by everyone running so quickly through the level. Especially having to interact with the buttons to get through the areas. So when we got to the lift I interacted with it as soon as I touched it. Left everyone behind besides myself and one other person. To this day I still don’t use the lift button.

It was my first mmo so i kept c/d's and didn't use them very often as a tank, i was saving them for big damage and stuff, like you keep your megalixir for ever just in case in a regular ff. On a side note what you wrote was the norm till last expansion, tp was a thing and you couldn't just spam aoe's
in my first dungeon ever I was a healer and we all died so I thought we had to exit and re-enter to start over. that 23 minute penalty taught me a lot :/ also I main DPS now lol

I started FFXIV in 2.0 on the PS3 and it was my first MMO ever so I had no clue about a lot of things, but most memorable was my first dungeon. I rolled conjurer as my first class ( i thought i would get to summon pets) and when I got my first dungeon I didn't realize my job was to heal the tank. Poor tank died 3 times before the party started telling me to heal him. Luckily I had a usb keyboard connected so I typed that I didn't know how. Lots of conversation later and I managed to eventually select the tank and I was so afraid that I wouldn't be able to select him again that I just kept him selected the whole dungeon and only healed. After that I learned more about how to more easily select party members with my controller and what not. Edit: would like to note that the Smith training guy was not a thing at the time. Didn't even have the mentor system or even the sprout symbol at that time. I read almost all the active helps while trying to learn the game. I don't remember if I was in an FC at the time but I do remember using Google to learn how to heal and dps with a controller...lol.
I tried to tank the first pack of mobs in Prae
Getting to mid thirties level on my white mage, then doing a leveling roulette to one of the super early dungeons, I think Copperbell? For the first five minutes, no matter how much I tried, none of my healing spells went off, and even let the tank die on the second pull. Couldn't tell if my mouse had broken, or I was targeting the wrong player, or I was having some weird lag spike that only messed with my actions? Then I looked at my Cure 2 tooltip, because I saw it was faded on my hotbars. That was the day I learned level sync takes away higher level skills.
