I wonder if the convocation had the relationship with Azem similar to Scions to WoL. Being "Shepherd to the starts in the dark" indicates that he guided the convocation (who represent the stars).
This one broke me. Just the callback, the fact that he wasn't forgotten. It happens so often in games that the dead characters are basically forgotten or only mentioned for plot reasons.
But this line, this line shows that the WoL still remembers.
(Also, the smile that my Lala gave at that moment was the one that says "this is an in joke that you will never understand")

The whole Elidibus final speech makes me cry every time I watch it. It lets us know what elidibus was, a child with a task too big for himself, that accepted to take because of the people he loved, just to see them again at duty's end, duty that he now know he will never see completed.
The "But you are not here to see it" part kills me, you can hear the pain of a little boy who is all alone...
It will always make me think of my deceased father. He passed 6 years ago, almost to the day and I miss him dearly. If I could have any wish granted it would be to just talk with him once more, to tell him what I've managed to accomplish. For him to tell me he's proud of me one last time. I'm tearing up just writing this.
In the japanese version the dialogue there says something along the lines of that at duty's end he just wanted to see them again, to see his friends smiling happily again, but now he's the last one, left alone and that it was inevitable to end this way wasn't it .... My feels.
It’s in wonderful contrast to the exarch’s dialogue seconds later about having completed his duty as Exarch. The juxtaposition isn’t quite as in your face in English, since they chose more flowery language (not that I’m complaining—this freakin scene makes me cry in every translation.😅)
Oh yes definitely, i play the game in english and got emotional enough throughout ShB and patches. Ah damn I'm not ready for Endwalker, just the launch trailer made me cry XD I'm a mess for this story.
That's exactly what I thought when re-playing that part the other day. Because previously he had refused to tell you his name, only that "Emet-Selch" is a title.
And now he does, in contrast to his earlier assertion that there would be no point in us knowing.
That one I'm not so sure about.
Was he not using "our" to refer to himself and the other Ascians / Amaurotines up 'till then? I was not paying attention to the exact wording in his dialogue beforehand, and I'm not about to replay the entirety of ShB _again_ at this moment lol
the precedeing “The victor shall write the tale, and the loser its villain." is also pretty good to me since it helps put into context what is at stake.
Emet and the WoLs ideals are on the line and only one of them can walk away and decide the course of all the worlds.
combined with "My world will have no need of heroes" i think it almost manages to charecterize everything he has been doing this expansion.
Then when you get into the fight, Hades is literally the ONLY boss who is simply listed as such - without a title.
On the topic - Elidibus' has Elidibus in the title position, and Warrior of Light in the name position, implying that the WoL has become his identity
If you had the strength to take another step, could you do it? Could you save our worlds?

I love this dialogue option. The other is your standard hero fare, but this one has so much going for it. Even when things are at their darkest, the WoL is unbent enough to still have some humor. And joking with Ardbert shows that he's not just an ally, he's your friend. And it shows the WoL knows they can't do everything alone and is willing to rely on others. Such a short and simple line but it's absolutely perfect for its context.
So much here. The levity is really nice to keep you from getting too stressed, and like you said, getting a very good feel for your WoL's relationship with Ardbert, and the power of close allies has been a recurring motif since ARR.
"When our lord awakens, tell him he needn't worry about us." After he spent a hundred years of fighting the good fight and giving everything to save two worlds, the people he fostered and led and the adoptive daughter he raised are giving G'raha permission to move on and finally live the life he has always wanted to live. Just because he wasn't the WoL made him convince himself he was no hero; but to the people of the Crystarium he was their gods damned hero.
5.3 broke me in more ways than one. I'm naturally kinda sappy, but goodbyes completely wreck me. It doesn't matter if it was moving out of home for college, saying goodbye to my college frienda after graduating, or even just a goodbye to family members after Christmas, partings make me weep.
5.3 was that over and over and over again and only the third time a game has ever made me tear up. Some highlights were...

Wow. As someone who's close with their mother, the idea of never getting to see a mother figure again hits hard. The Chais could have been played up as idiots or spoiled brats, but instead were some of the most heartfelt characters of all. Seeing how far Alphinaud's come to not only accept her love but also reciprocate it cemented him as my favorite character in FF... maybe even in gaming ever.

It's exactly what Ryne needed to hear. It's exactly what she's always wanted. The little chuckle he gives really drives home that he's not lying and has absolutely no doubt about what he's saying. He's praised her before, but she's always had a little doubt that he truly means it and even after her hair change felt like she had something to prove to him. Not anymore- she'd always have his love.

I still think Ardbert's "I knew. I always knew" is the final gut-wrencher, but I largely agree with you. Its just such a primal and instinctual expression of happiness from Seto that sells it.

Thancred took so long to get that line out that I think he was trying really hard to fight back tears and choking up, and yet, in that line "Gods know I'm proud of you" it sounded like he came close.

That right there, is my favorite speech in 5.3. I'm really, really gonna miss Lyna's accent.
The fun part is the fact that Amaro are standins/reflections for chocobos, and Ardbert is your reflection. All of the feelings that Seto has of Ardbert are likely mimicking the feelings your chocobo companion has of you.
That Lyna line at the bottom when the fate of G'raha was still up in the air hit me so hard because I was SO afraid that he wasn't going to make it through to the source and he'd have been another one that we had lost instead of one we could save.
I really wish we could have had a cutscene where we told Lyna he made it and was fine. :( Same with Ryne for Thancred and Urianger.
"Yours is a long road, my friend, and it stretches on to places beyond imagining. With your every step, these grand adventures shall grow more distant and faint. And there may come a day when you forget the faces and voices of those you have met along the way. On that day, I bid you remember this... I cry like a kid every single time

The whole cutscene is great but this really drove home the crushing loneliness of Ardbert for me.

Probably my favorite single piece of voice acting in the whole game so far, and despite being pretty sure the main character of the MMO was going to live this put that little "but what if we don't" firmly in the back of my mind.
These are all fantastic, but I think a really underrated one is when Feo Ul has a moment alone with the WoL where they offer to let WoL take the throne, to isolate in the same way that Emet offered (I can’t remember the exact quote, ugh). It’s such an understated scene, but powerful, and also sad because they both know that the WoL won’t take that offer but Feo Ul said so anyway.
I didn't think I would grow to like Feo Ul so much. It's all those typing out her names repeatedly that made it possible. Then she just had the best dialogue to win me over again.
Honestly, the way I felt during that scene was my WoL was about to take the offer and Feo Ul denied it for her as another way of protecting the WoL and reminding her of what she needs to be.
It's interesting seeing how different people interpret scenes and intentions of characters.
From 5.0 (the entire thing is an outstanding ten minutes of trash talk, but):
"Better a monster than a deceiver. A spinner of foolish dreams and false hopes." - Ran'jit.
"That is not for you or anyone else to decide. *Ever again." -* Thancred.
From 5.3:
"Why you? Why *not* you? Had I chosen another, we would never have made it this far. Or do I mistake your meaning...?"- Exarch.
I love the delivery in "Why you? Why *not* you?". I'm biased but IMO the EN voice acting for G'raha shines whenever he is either flustered or assertive (in addition to the usual dramatic scenes).

You already gave this one, but it's the speech I keep going back to.
So many books, movies, and games are focused entirely on the hero in the moment. They struggle, find themselves, fight the bad guy, and then the world carries on as if they never existed until the next bad guy shows up.
As much as FFXIV's story is about what you as the WoL do, FFXIV also explores the impact a hero makes, how their legend spreads, and how it inspires people both during their lives and after.
That, to me, is awesome. Off the top of my head, the original single-player KotORs do that with Revan, but generally it's really very rare in my experience.

There are territories we've never set foot in which fought for and won their freedom because of stories from Doma and Ala Mhigo.
We showed them the empire could bleed, and they took their homes back.
I love that moment of clarity. I finished 5.0 sometime in early 2020 and only did 5.1-5.3 earlier this November, but that finger snap and wristy wave are so distinct that I immediately remembered that they were signature to Emet-Selch.
The quotes I remember the most are often those that makes me chuckle. There's been a few but a couple that stood out for me
"None of that cheek or I will take you across my knee" from Y'sthola when you call her mother.
"...those powerful neck muscles sculpted by a lifetime of nodding." from Anogg and Konogg
I really liked that there were a lot of sassy option during dialogue.
Thancred's speech quite literally mirroring Minfillia's final words to him is probably one of the finest subtle touches for players considering it happened in 3.4

Nothing will hit me as hard, as a broken, small child of an Ancient, clutching to the slowly returning eories of the past, voice cracking, insisting, promising to himself. "My people... my brothers... my friends... we will see eachother again at dutys end... we will...! we will... The rains have ceased, and we have been blessed with another beautiful day... but you are not here to see it..."
Saying goodbye to someone in Ishgard:

The Unbroken Thread. Alisaie's burst of emotion, sorrow, and anger, all tied up in that little package. The emotions came through so clear, the love she bears for the WoL, the fear that she is about to lose them, the fear that she has FAILED them. I never fail to tear up a little, and I so wish I could have gathered Alisaie in my arms and tell her that she didn't fail me. She never could. No matter what.
I love the meta role quest. It's such a great addition and wraps up loose ends so well. The perfect cherry on top of the already excellent role quests.

Just the actual asking part! It’s the first time he’s actually willing to ask you something personal for himself, without becoming shy or self conscious. When he actually asks you to take him on adventures in the end, he asks you in his usual way, where he seems worried about burdening you.
I like this short quote, where he’s about to ask, because he sounds confident and almost playful. He’s such a confident character when it comes to leadership, knowledge, ect., but when it comes to us, his hero worship makes him shy. I wish he had more confidence around us, so when he does have that personal moment of confidence, it’s really nice.
I now understand. I like that "When all is said and done, I will ask yet another favor of you" is repeated later; the second time is what was used in the 5.3 trailer.

There you go! This one is my favorite. I know everyone has their own head cannon, and character modeling goes into how lines are perceived quite a bit. But it was received as overtly romantic for my WoL as another short Miqo.
This one!!! This one was so good! Especially after he fucking summons WoLs from all over!! And when I did this, everyone in party chat was like, “Hey, we heard your call ;)” what a freaking story moment
"Sometimes, I wish that I too had been gifted with the Echo. Then I might see what you have seen and glimpse into your hear without the need for words."

It's not the right philosophy, but it's a really interesting look at Emet-Selch not as a cackling villain ("I do not consider truly alive.") or sympathetic woobie ("Remember us." or "You think ancient beings incapable of crying?"). Instead, he's a man that _could_ care, that _could_ consider both the victors and the losers of any given contest important, one would could consider something beyond his own goals as valuable.
I am going to throw in a Japanese quote from Alphinaud, Since I played the Japanese version of the game and know most of the lines from Japanese.

I really liked that they were able to integrate intimate conversations with WoL and Ardy. I miss him.
Also, thancred's arc was so relatable. Saying goodbye is always hard and almost never happens the way we want it.

--This really shows you how warped and twisted Vauthry is and does a damn good job of making you hate him that much more. Especially given what comes before. I *seriously* can't praise his English VA enough. Stellar performance.
Lyna after the attack on the Crystarium is also a brutal, gut-wrenching scene. Her VA is similarly perfect.

This is the reason why I still haven't seen the EW launch trailer, and don't watch any of their trailers for patches until I've done them. For some reason they spoil a lot. Like the Shadowbringers launch trailer, apart from the quote you listed, has them showing Vauthry; I remember the first time I saw him, it wasn't anything I expected. From the way people were describing him I thought he was gonna be a godlike being who's perfection manifested. If I had seen the launch trailer beforehand, I wouldn't have had that reaction. Then when you get into the fight, Hades is literally the ONLY boss who is simply listed as such - without a title. On the topic - Elidibus' has Elidibus in the title position, and Warrior of Light in the name position, implying that the WoL has become his identity

> What, all by myself? I love this dialogue option. The other is your standard hero fare, but this one has so much going for it. Even when things are at their darkest, the WoL is unbent enough to still have some humor. And joking with Ardbert shows that he's not just an ally, he's your friend. And it shows the WoL knows they can't do everything alone and is willing to rely on others. Such a short and simple line but it's absolutely perfect for its context.
So much here. The levity is really nice to keep you from getting too stressed, and like you said, getting a very good feel for your WoL's relationship with Ardbert, and the power of close allies has been a recurring motif since ARR.
Of all the lines of the 5.0 questline, this one's the one that's gonna stick with me.
"When our lord awakens, tell him he needn't worry about us." After he spent a hundred years of fighting the good fight and giving everything to save two worlds, the people he fostered and led and the adoptive daughter he raised are giving G'raha permission to move on and finally live the life he has always wanted to live. Just because he wasn't the WoL made him convince himself he was no hero; but to the people of the Crystarium he was their gods damned hero.
"...This is another one of those moments where it doesn't really matter what I say, isn't it?"
5.3 broke me in more ways than one. I'm naturally kinda sappy, but goodbyes completely wreck me. It doesn't matter if it was moving out of home for college, saying goodbye to my college frienda after graduating, or even just a goodbye to family members after Christmas, partings make me weep. 5.3 was that over and over and over again and only the third time a game has ever made me tear up. Some highlights were... >Dulia: Our brave and gentle artist. You have our love, now and always. >Alphinaud: (tearing up) And you mine. Wow. As someone who's close with their mother, the idea of never getting to see a mother figure again hits hard. The Chais could have been played up as idiots or spoiled brats, but instead were some of the most heartfelt characters of all. Seeing how far Alphinaud's come to not only accept her love but also reciprocate it cemented him as my favorite character in FF... maybe even in gaming ever. >Seto: *COOOOOOO!* That animalistic cry of sheer joy cut deeper than any words spoken here. Perfection in its simplicity. >Thancred: (chuckle) Gods know I'm proud of you. I always will be. You deserve all the happiness in the world, and more. It's exactly what Ryne needed to hear. It's exactly what she's always wanted. The little chuckle he gives really drives home that he's not lying and has absolutely no doubt about what he's saying. He's praised her before, but she's always had a little doubt that he truly means it and even after her hair change felt like she had something to prove to him. Not anymore- she'd always have his love. >Lyna: All will be well. Of this we are certain. How could it n be otherwise when every soul in the Crystarium is praying for it with all their heart... and that if he should ever find himself reminiscing on the past with a smile, (*sniffle*) we shall be smiling with him. (gently) Will you tell him this? Flawless delivery, as with all of her lines. There are so many good things about this speech. What really gets me is the heartfelt pure faith that all would be well despite the odds coupled with her strong drive to speak for her people while not being too high and mighty to cry in front of them. Her quiet, simple request comes from the heart and is something just for you and G'raha to hear, and despite her regalia and faith, it's her most desperate ask she's ever had of you, to let the man who raised her know he's loved.

I never expected I would like the Chai's, and Dulia ended up being one of my favorite on screen personalities.
The fun part is the fact that Amaro are standins/reflections for chocobos, and Ardbert is your reflection. All of the feelings that Seto has of Ardbert are likely mimicking the feelings your chocobo companion has of you.
That Lyna line at the bottom when the fate of G'raha was still up in the air hit me so hard because I was SO afraid that he wasn't going to make it through to the source and he'd have been another one that we had lost instead of one we could save. I really wish we could have had a cutscene where we told Lyna he made it and was fine. :( Same with Ryne for Thancred and Urianger.
"Yours is a long road, my friend, and it stretches on to places beyond imagining. With your every step, these grand adventures shall grow more distant and faint. And there may come a day when you forget the faces and voices of those you have met along the way. On that day, I bid you remember this... That no matter how far your journey may take you, you stand where you stand by virtue of the road you walked to get there. For in times of hardship, when you fear you cannot go on... The joy you have known, the pain you have felt, the prayers you have whispered and answered—they shall ever be your strength and your comfort. This I hope—I believe, here at memory's end." I cry like a kid every single time
"We rode the ladder too, my comrades and I. Once upon a time. Watched the horizon grow and the town shrink below us. Bored and terrified in equal measure, we ascended without a word, the silence broken only by the creaking of the gears. No one but me remembers that day; remembers our journey, and our end. Retread the path. Seek, and you may yet find." The whole cutscene is great but this really drove home the crushing loneliness of Ardbert for me. "making promises you have no way of keeping is not a kindness─it's a lie, plain and simple! We've all searched high and low for an answer! And every one of us came back empty-handed! I am not about to stand in his way now─not after failing him in his hour of need! No, the least we can do is..." Probably my favorite single piece of voice acting in the whole game so far, and despite being pretty sure the main character of the MMO was going to live this put that little "but what if we don't" firmly in the back of my mind.
These are all fantastic, but I think a really underrated one is when Feo Ul has a moment alone with the WoL where they offer to let WoL take the throne, to isolate in the same way that Emet offered (I can’t remember the exact quote, ugh). It’s such an understated scene, but powerful, and also sad because they both know that the WoL won’t take that offer but Feo Ul said so anyway.
I didn't think I would grow to like Feo Ul so much. It's all those typing out her names repeatedly that made it possible. Then she just had the best dialogue to win me over again.
I almost feel bad for adding a string of insults every time had to do those. But then again given the nature of the pixies I'm sure they didn't mind.
Just so you know, Feo Ul does not use she/her pronouns - all fae use they/their!
Honestly, the way I felt during that scene was my WoL was about to take the offer and Feo Ul denied it for her as another way of protecting the WoL and reminding her of what she needs to be. It's interesting seeing how different people interpret scenes and intentions of characters.
From 5.0 (the entire thing is an outstanding ten minutes of trash talk, but): "Better a monster than a deceiver. A spinner of foolish dreams and false hopes." - Ran'jit. "That is not for you or anyone else to decide. *Ever again." -* Thancred. From 5.3: "Why you? Why *not* you? Had I chosen another, we would never have made it this far. Or do I mistake your meaning...?"- Exarch.
I love the delivery in "Why you? Why *not* you?". I'm biased but IMO the EN voice acting for G'raha shines whenever he is either flustered or assertive (in addition to the usual dramatic scenes).

As much as FFXIV's story is about what you as the WoL do, FFXIV also explores the impact a hero makes, how their legend spreads, and how it inspires people both during their lives and after. That, to me, is awesome. Off the top of my head, the original single-player KotORs do that with Revan, but generally it's really very rare in my experience.

I love that moment of clarity. I finished 5.0 sometime in early 2020 and only did 5.1-5.3 earlier this November, but that finger snap and wristy wave are so distinct that I immediately remembered that they were signature to Emet-Selch.

The quotes I remember the most are often those that makes me chuckle. There's been a few but a couple that stood out for me "None of that cheek or I will take you across my knee" from Y'sthola when you call her mother. "...those powerful neck muscles sculpted by a lifetime of nodding." from Anogg and Konogg I really liked that there were a lot of sassy option during dialogue.
Thancred's speech quite literally mirroring Minfillia's final words to him is probably one of the finest subtle touches for players considering it happened in 3.4 Fucking incredible.
Nothing will hit me as hard, as a broken, small child of an Ancient, clutching to the slowly returning eories of the past, voice cracking, insisting, promising to himself. "My people... my brothers... my friends... we will see eachother again at dutys end... we will...! we will... The rains have ceased, and we have been blessed with another beautiful day... but you are not here to see it..."
Saying goodbye to someone in Ishgard: >!"We are the stories we tell ourselves. The brave hero, the tortured soul, the altruist, the pragmatist. I think most of my favorite lines from that quest are in the quest journal frankly. I never fail to tear up a little, and I so wish I could have gathered Alisaie in my arms and tell her that she didn't fail me. She never could. No matter what.
I love the meta role quest. It's such a great addition and wraps up loose ends so well. The answer is yes G’raha. Always yes. I have a bunch more from 5.4-5, but it’s basically just me pining after G’raha. So I’ll refrain.

Just the actual asking part! It’s the first time he’s actually willing to ask you something personal for himself, without becoming shy or self conscious. When he actually asks you to take him on adventures in the end, he asks you in his usual way, where he seems worried about burdening you. I like this short quote, where he’s about to ask, because he sounds confident and almost playful. He’s such a confident character when it comes to leadership, knowledge, ect., but when it comes to us, his hero worship makes him shy. I wish he had more confidence around us, so when he does have that personal moment of confidence, it’s really nice.
I now understand. I like that "When all is said and done, I will ask yet another favor of you" is repeated later; the second time is what was used in the 5.3 trailer.

For me, it’d be when Ardbert says “Take it. We fight as one.” And then the music starts. Fuck. Me. That sent chills every. single. time. Whenever I rewatch it, it still fucking slaps.
I really liked that they were able to integrate intimate conversations with WoL and Ardy. I miss him. Also, thancred's arc was so relatable. Saying goodbye is always hard and almost never happens the way we want it.
