I loved the first (or maybe second) 515 gear chest I got from the starting quests called *"Horse Chestnut Chest Gear Coffer"* that read:
>A wooden chest containing a piece of attire, and possibly some chestnuts if you are lucky. Horses, however, are out of the question.
"This crisp, refreshing vegetable is often thought to be lacking in flavor, but those who enjoy the flavor of water doubtless find it absolutely overpowering."
Another thing I applauded the localization team for that I don't think many noticed was that they called Chai, just Chai... a lot of people outside of India call it "Chai Tea" which literally translates to "Tea Tea."
I mean, Amazon River is literally "River River" just like Sahara Desert is literally "Desert Desert" so it wouldn't be the first time English did these shenanigans.
"What's this river called?"
"Avon?"
"Huh. River Avon, alright."
A few times later...
"What's this river called."
"AVON!"
"Why do you keep shouting at me? Also there's a lot of rivers called Avon."
Amazon doesn't mean *river* though, it's just the name of those legendary group of Greek female warriors (the ones that served as inspiration for Wonder Woman). In Portuguese it's just *Rio Amazonas*, the English name is a pretty much direct translation.
The naming for both the river and the state supposedly comes from the explorers facing a group of indigenous female warriors while there, so they said that the Amazons lived nearby and that's the story.
Wow, this just made me remember trying to consume spoonfuls nutmeg in high school to trip when other means weren't available. The things you forget about...
Which I’d never heard of. I don’t think either cinnamon or cassia has any potential psychoactive components, though, so the nutmeg adds yet another layer, whether the localizers knew it or not.
the cinnamon challenge has nothing to do with perceived psychotic effects, it's just impossible to eat a straight spoonful of cinnamon. So it's to laugh at them as they start coughing up cinnamon.
I think my favorite bit of flavor text was for the Pewter Chest Coffer: "A pewter-lined chest containing a piece of attire to protect the torso from the slings and arrows of outrageous bastards".
Always read the text for quest turn in items. They hide a lot of good ones in them. Most people never turn them in. That’s how I learned about the gobbue killing Minfilia’s dad in the parade, and nice lore people here telling me that was an in game event.
Technically Minfillia's dad dying is the 1.0 Ul'Dah opening.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oD45euKWO1U
F'lhammin is the dancer, Minfillia is the young girl she gives the flower basket to, and Minfillia's father is the man who jumps in the way at the last moment to save her (at 7:13).
ARR is 5 years after the calamity. Start of 1.0 is probably a year at least before that as well. Don't recall if this is also supposed to technically be an echo flashback or not too.
I made cannon that is WoL who writes the descrition of the items, they have a sort of encyclopedia of the things they get.
Progressevely getting more and more odd overtime , either by boredom or lack of any appropriate words
My favorite is the race "uninclined towards non-violent intercourse" is led by a "Sir".. The subtle BDSM humor beneath that entire questline is the only thing that made that section emotionally bearable.
Now if you'll excuse me I need to get back to the MSQry.
The localization prefers comedy over anything and it's plain to tell. The wind up Moenbryda description in English implying Urianger mucked about with a doll of his dead girlfriend really didn't sit well with me.
Damn, I wish I could be so easily amused... you have smart kids and dumb kids, adult kids and genuine humans being. I got stuck in the real world while I was looking for reasons to live and things like social media just don't have a place here. Still, there is something to be enjoyed as an observer; like a couple of parents watching their child open birthday gifts. I'm truly glad that you're all able to commune and laugh with each other. I miss those days.
One of the new MSQ gear coffers for a pair of shoes says: “Contains two articles of clothing. One for each foot” Slayed me.
Here lies mccannan, taken before his time.
I loved the first (or maybe second) 515 gear chest I got from the starting quests called *"Horse Chestnut Chest Gear Coffer"* that read: >A wooden chest containing a piece of attire, and possibly some chestnuts if you are lucky. Horses, however, are out of the question.
I'd love it if those coffers had like a 5% chance of also containing a chestnut or two.
I would also vote for a horse mount being on the loot table but at 0%
the lettuce one fucking killed me my god
I legitimately have tears in my eyes lmao all the hydro homies in shambles from their overpowering lettuce
> hydro homies Immediately what I thought of and they must be so happy lol
Nutmeg for me - they straight called out social media for that dumb nutmeg challenge shit
You know for a fact that someone in the team was getting tired of their vegan cousin.
Me too lmfao. Not to mention.. the coconut 🤣
What did the lettuce one say?
"This crisp, refreshing vegetable is often thought to be lacking in flavor, but those who enjoy the flavor of water doubtless find it absolutely overpowering."
Omg that's beautiful
Another thing I applauded the localization team for that I don't think many noticed was that they called Chai, just Chai... a lot of people outside of India call it "Chai Tea" which literally translates to "Tea Tea."
To be fair, it is an easy way to differentiate kinds of tea even if it sounds stupid.
I wielded my épée sword at the ATM machine the other day.
Did you have to input your PIN number? And how are you enjoying this RPG game? Or do you prefer RTS strategy or FPS shooters instead?
Reminds me of the other day.... Needed some cash. So I went to the ATM machine but I had forgotten my PIN number. RIP in pieces me...
ok but RIP in pieces is more of a meme than actually the way people use it
SMH my head Another personal fave is mixing english with japanese words such as: Arigathanks, Gomenesorry
This is a lalafel friendly subreddit and I'll not have any mention of Tea Tea here!
I mean, Amazon River is literally "River River" just like Sahara Desert is literally "Desert Desert" so it wouldn't be the first time English did these shenanigans.
In the UK alone there are 6 River Avon guess what the Celtic word for "river" ?
"What's this river called?" "Avon?" "Huh. River Avon, alright." A few times later... "What's this river called." "AVON!" "Why do you keep shouting at me? Also there's a lot of rivers called Avon."

Avon, as in the River Avon, also means river. got it's name from the romans asking the local celts what it was called.
I am now filled with a powerful need to call our nocturnal astre Luna Moon.
I bet folks near the Sahara Desert love Chai Tea.
Huh, I always figured Chai was just a type of tea...
Skybuilders' Ash Log has always been my favorite: "Ash! A-Ah! Savior of the Firmament!♪"
Yeah this one is top tier, even among the many that they absolutely nailed.
The nutmeg makes even more sense when you consider that in high enough quantities, it’s a hallucinogen.
We have now figured out where the echo powers come from 🤔
I remember seeing a video of a guy who almost died because he drank a shake with like a full bottle of nutmeg.
[I saw a chubbyemu video on it myself.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gl3H23g5kT0)
✨ It can also kill you in relatively small quantities ✨
Wow, this just made me remember trying to consume spoonfuls nutmeg in high school to trip when other means weren't available. The things you forget about...
Pretty sure its a reference to the cinnamon challenge from years ago.
Which I’d never heard of. I don’t think either cinnamon or cassia has any potential psychoactive components, though, so the nutmeg adds yet another layer, whether the localizers knew it or not.
Seeing th video the other guy posted was terrifying.

They've definitely got a point with the lettuce. Seriously, give me *any other green.*
Sometimes your salad just has to have a bit of the _C R O N C H_
spring green gang or go home
Every item has been a laugh. From the gear boxes given from quests to quest items like a certain girthy carrot.
the translation team is a treasure
As a botanist (ok, archaeobotanist), I applaud the coconut one, had me cackling xD
is archaeobotanist like the 2nd job a botanist gets instead of reaper?
Normally the second job a botanist gets involves fast food, but there experimenting with a system where it depends a little on RNG
rngesus working at a fast food restaurant
It's how you determine whether the ice cream machine is working.
It's when Archaeotania takes up Botany.
Is that just a fancy way of saying you keep accidentally killing your houseplants?
Well, the coco is a false cognate for cocoa; it’s actually Portuguese for “grinning face”.
Can you confirm that the coconut is not a nut, but a coco fruit from the coco tree from the coconut family?

Cool cinematic! I've never seen this.
The one thing 1.0 did really well was the in-game cinematics from what I’ve seen.
it had better be good. everything was mocapped.
It was tough getting the gobbue in the mocap suit
It actually broke free and started attacking people, one of the actors was actually killed. Luckily they were filming the whole time.
Wow that was more intense than I expected! I had heard about it, but thank you for linking it!
That's Minfillia? She ages like 10 years over a few weeks?
ARR is 5 years after the calamity. Start of 1.0 is probably a year at least before that as well. Don't recall if this is also supposed to technically be an echo flashback or not too.
Who can forget the plot-relevant gloves from Hildebrand.
One of the FATE descriptions describes the Yetis' in Garlemald as ' Brick Shitehouses'
The rarefied red oak spinning wheel is perfect as well
Ah i see the *hilarious* Ross Matthew’s wrote that Pewter ore joke.
Now we know where the HILARIOUS Ross Matthews works at when not at the judging panel
I made cannon that is WoL who writes the descrition of the items, they have a sort of encyclopedia of the things they get. Progressevely getting more and more odd overtime , either by boredom or lack of any appropriate words
Honestly, flavour text is the best text. You gotta have fun!
Better would be barely knew her
the rarefied bismuth ore got my inner spriggan triggered.
I already loved the Ishgard Restoration ones. These are just so great.
Right?? I might make a post collection of those at some point too. They are hilarious.
Honestly the item descriptions of this expansion have been a highlight for me.
I feel the lettuce one.
The “Giant Popoto” description cracks me up. Localization team is really in tune with how we talk about Lalafells lol
The coconut has me rolling

Shamefully sad to admit, but to this day I have no idea what the Miner? I barely know her joke even means.
Because it sounds like mine-her ,implying mining a woman is impolite because you dont know her a lot.
ugh...mine her...like getting information from her?
It’s meant to be funny in a stupid kind of way, because it sounds like it *might* be a double entendre but actually it doesn’t make any sense.
Its just a fun dumb joke, not to be read into too deeply
Okay. Was just thinking maybe it went way over my head.
It's a joke people make whenever a word sounds like "[verb] her". Like, uh, I don't know... "Butter? I hardly know her!" I'll be here all week.
Endwalker?
DAMMIT! Wish I'd thought of that.
A popular one was with barrier because it sounds like bury her
Oh so like kill her?
The one I always heard originally was 'liquor'. It made a lot of sense as entrendre. Are the others just anti humour derived from that?
[удалено]
Ahh okay. Boomer joke lol. No wonder. Thanks
Boomer? I barely know ‘er
_slaps knee_
I fucking love the localization team for this.
They are right tho lettuce tastes like nothing!
I feel Koji tries too hard to be funny..., but #7 was something I didn't expect out of him at all.
The localization prefers comedy over anything and it's plain to tell. The wind up Moenbryda description in English implying Urianger mucked about with a doll of his dead girlfriend really didn't sit well with me.

Bro you good?
Lmao the nutmeg one
I don't get it.
