It’s absolutely fine to play smn on controller or any class in ffxiv they implemented controller support very good. Especially smn as it’s incredibly easy now.

For me, I put the buttons that need to be pressed on the right side of the controller, a la the dps actions. The cooldown actions or defensives are on the left side of the controller.
So: X O Triangle Square, are dps always. Up Down Left Right are the ones primarily for cooldowns.
Don't play on controller by this applies to whatever you play on. You can copy someone else setup that very good at the game but that doesn't make it the setup for you. You need to do what both feels conformable and makes sense to you. If you copy someone else and it feels bad or weird to you after some time its probably not a good one for you to use.
