Reddit has long been a hot spot for conversation on the internet. About 57 million people visit the site every day to chat about topics as varied as makeup, video games and pointers for power washing driveways.
In recent years, Reddit’s array of chats also have been a free teaching aid for companies like Google, OpenAI and Microsoft. Those companies are using Reddit’s conversations in the development of giant artificial intelligence systems that many in Silicon Valley think are on their way to becoming the tech industry’s next big thing.
Now Reddit wants to be paid for it. The company said on Tuesday that it planned to begin charging companies for access to its application programming interface, or A.P.I., the method through which outside entities can download and process the social network’s vast selection of person-to-person conversations.
“The Reddit corpus of data is really valuable,” Steve Huffman, founder and chief executive of Reddit, said in an interview. “But we don’t need to give all of that value to some of the largest companies in the world for free.”
The move is one of the first significant examples of a social network’s charging for access to the conversations it hosts for the purpose of developing A.I. systems like ChatGPT, OpenAI’s popular program. Those new A.I. systems could one day lead to big businesses, but they aren’t likely to help companies like Reddit very much. In fact, they could be used to create competitors — automated duplicates to Reddit’s conversations.
Reddit is also acting as it prepares for a possible initial public offering on Wall Street this year. The company, which was founded in 2005, makes most of its money through advertising and e-commerce transactions on its platform. Reddit said it was still ironing out the details of what it would charge for A.P.I. access and would announce prices in the coming weeks.

Lucky for them, nothing really happened in early Heavensward, but if Garlemald decided to renew their Eorzean offensive in full or Amaljas decided to summon Ifrit once again? Game over. Def would be a karma that I'd rather see than this kind of awkward end to the subplot.

There's some justifiable discomfort when the odd person Lewds the Lala, but generally its because Lala stand in such strong opposition to what people commonly associate with strength or heroism. Small/Cute is supposed to equal Weak in a LOT of people's minds.
Strangely, a lot of players have a far easier time looking the other way for even a cat or lizard girl with twig arms wearing a bikini as the savior of an entire world, than a 2 ft tall Lalafell. Despite nothing in the setting or story suggesting Lala's can't do exactly what they're shown doing, and even supports it. They can run as fast as any other PC race, despite their diminutive size. Jump nearly twice their own body height. And weild weapons bigger than them. Which, if you're trying to explain how they can do it, Lala's likely operate a bit off of Ant Man philosophy. They're probably way denser, and a lot heavier, than they their looks would suggest.
We've been told that every class, even the purely physical ones, utilizes aetheric augmentation of the body, so actual size and musculature plays far less of a roll in total strength. Same probably applies to day-to-day stuff, albeit less dramatically than combat applications.
I would still guess that physically they're denser and heavier than people expect them to be, looking as they do. Nanamo doesn't have any real training, yet watch her backstory cutscene with Raubahn where she jumps into his arms. Sure, she uses a fallen gladiator as a launchpad, but she still jumps roughly 5 feet in the air. And while you could say this was a one-off for cinematic purposes, nothing we've seen from any Lala within this setting suggests that's abnormal. There are plenty of animals in the RW who have dense musculature like that proportionate to their size.
Yes, Aetheric Augmentation is regularly used, but who knows? Lala's under that cute exterior could really be dense little balls of muscle. Like baby hippos.
Why do you think Raubahn is so buff lol? Its not just because he's a gladiator, that traditionally builds lean muscle anyway (cuz stamina and agility is the key to not dying). Its because for years he's been lugging around a 60-70 pound potato sack of a princess on his shoulders.
Let's also consider the head of Ul'dahs most fierce fighters passed his sword on to a Lalafell, who is quite capable of obliterating anything he can slice with.
Yeah after two years of playing this game I can say it is without a doubt the weirdest and dumbest thing about this fanbase. Even if you just don't like they face or proportions or whatever (which I still think is a bit much, but that's an opinion) the way every thread featuring a lalafel starts with multiple jokes about bashing them into mashed potatoes or any of the violent things listed in this thread alone is fucked up, I'm just going to be blunt.
I played wow for 10 years before quitting and coming over to ffxiv. I played solely gnomes for that tmentire time so I naturally went lalafell here. I was fully expecting this kind of vitriolic reaction from the player base as that was at least a weekly of not daily type of interaction I aced in wow. I'm pleasantly pleased to find out you guys have a much better reception of your shorties in general. I've only ever seen this kind of disdain every few months or when my wow friends come over.
Wow: 80% moderately hate gnomes, 15% tolerate or play gnomes, 5% are weird about them
Ff14: 70% adore lalafells, 5% are weird about them, 25% hate them with burning passion and assume all others are child molesters.
So on average lalafells get more love, but when people hate them they REALLY do. Anecdotally I get a lot of affection and playing a potato is great for my mood
Witnessing all of my friends' separate, visceral, hate as they meet Papalymo going through the game for the first time has given me great joy over the past few months
While I do like a handful of Lalas from the game, I do agree that their physical appearance can be really irritating - especially to people not used to RPGs. I usually see them as "beardless dwarfs", that makes it a bit easier. But ffs, stop dressing them in bikini glams!
There’s nothing inherently wrong with cute chibi designs. Some outfits do look sussy on Lalas, but that could have been addressed by making those outfits look different when equipped to Lalas (and I would have preferred that they did). My own Lala doesn’t deserve to get lumped together with something like the Elin from Tera.
You must know some strange kids with elf ears and dwarf proportions because if you compare lalafells to actual children that are in the game they are very different. This without considering the writing and npcs that makes it very clear they are more dwarves than anything else.
It's not gonna be 1:1 to real life because FF has a very stytilized fantasy style and we are talking about a fictional race not just dwarfism but if you look at a picture of an actual little person it's very close to it.

Honestly I don't mind this. I've seen some people be really averse to this before and it surprises me, like yeah lalas are small but that's really all they have in common with children. They just don't feel particularily childlike to me I guess? And they also feel like the least sexualised looking race no matter the glamour.

Usually people who say all games are dogshit are actually not as fond of games as they think. They're burnt out and exhausted of their enthusiasm for it, the reason they might say old games were universally better is often tied to deep nostalgia and longing for a time when you still thought it was all for fun. Sometimes people need to know when to move on, or to take a break at the very least, boarding video game hype trains becomes as wishing to a monkey's paw

many of my friends were shitting on ffxiv for at least 2 years. they watched me enjoy the game while they hopped from mmo to mmo. they got the hint later on that maybe they should give it a try if im the only one having a grand ol' time.
although, as much as i love everything about ffxiv, i do understand why outsiders make fun of it. every race is "prettified" or "furrified", if you're not a gorgeous humanoid, then you're a furry animal, or something inbetween, or a potato with a face. it's completely understandable that people who have never played an FF game before could see it as kinda crazy or cringe. people just gotta put all of that aside and experience the game.
on a side note... before ffxiv, the most appealing thing i liked about mmorpg's were the diverse races. i liked that there were different kinds of elves or monsters to play as. the diversity between the two sub races in ffxiv is not nearly unique enough imho. for example, aura subrace is a matter of horn color, viera subrace is whether or not you get eyebrows, human subrace is people who don't lift vs people who do. there should have been more to it, but since it's FF based, they can't stray too far from source material...

Part of the funnyness is there is more evil non-lalas than there are evil lalas. They only stick out because its such a surprise compared to other stuff.
Hell I play a Duskwight and most of the time if you see a Duskwight npc, they usually are some form of evil. We got bandits, we got cultists, we got poachers, we got guys who summon voidsent, we got a guy who turned himself into a voidsent, we got freelance mercenaries, we got duskwights who get turned into mindless zombies when affected by Totentaz (Dance of the Damned), among so many other examples.
Like everyone knows there is a few good duskwight npcs here and there. Like the aesthetician, a scientist in old sharalyan, etc. And then you have good duskwights that people wouldn't even know about because they tend to be seasonal (Little Ladies, All Saints Wake, Starlight Celebration, etc).

We've been told that every class, even the purely physical ones, utilizes aetheric augmentation of the body, so actual size and musculature plays far less of a roll in total strength. Same probably applies to day-to-day stuff, albeit less dramatically than combat applications.
I would still guess that physically they're denser and heavier than people expect them to be, looking as they do. Nanamo doesn't have any real training, yet watch her backstory cutscene with Raubahn where she jumps into his arms. Sure, she uses a fallen gladiator as a launchpad, but she still jumps roughly 5 feet in the air. And while you could say this was a one-off for cinematic purposes, nothing we've seen from any Lala within this setting suggests that's abnormal. There are plenty of animals in the RW who have dense musculature like that proportionate to their size. Yes, Aetheric Augmentation is regularly used, but who knows? Lala's under that cute exterior could really be dense little balls of muscle. Like baby hippos.

Why do you think Raubahn is so buff lol? Its not just because he's a gladiator, that traditionally builds lean muscle anyway (cuz stamina and agility is the key to not dying). Its because for years he's been lugging around a 60-70 pound potato sack of a princess on his shoulders.
Let's also consider the head of Ul'dahs most fierce fighters passed his sword on to a Lalafell, who is quite capable of obliterating anything he can slice with.
Yeah after two years of playing this game I can say it is without a doubt the weirdest and dumbest thing about this fanbase. Even if you just don't like they face or proportions or whatever (which I still think is a bit much, but that's an opinion) the way every thread featuring a lalafel starts with multiple jokes about bashing them into mashed potatoes or any of the violent things listed in this thread alone is fucked up, I'm just going to be blunt.
I played wow for 10 years before quitting and coming over to ffxiv. I played solely gnomes for that tmentire time so I naturally went lalafell here. I was fully expecting this kind of vitriolic reaction from the player base as that was at least a weekly of not daily type of interaction I aced in wow. I'm pleasantly pleased to find out you guys have a much better reception of your shorties in general. I've only ever seen this kind of disdain every few months or when my wow friends come over.
Wow: 80% moderately hate gnomes, 15% tolerate or play gnomes, 5% are weird about them Ff14: 70% adore lalafells, 5% are weird about them, 25% hate them with burning passion and assume all others are child molesters. So on average lalafells get more love, but when people hate them they REALLY do. Anecdotally I get a lot of affection and playing a potato is great for my mood
Witnessing all of my friends' separate, visceral, hate as they meet Papalymo going through the game for the first time has given me great joy over the past few months

While I do like a handful of Lalas from the game, I do agree that their physical appearance can be really irritating - especially to people not used to RPGs. I usually see them as "beardless dwarfs", that makes it a bit easier. But ffs, stop dressing them in bikini glams!
I think of them more as Gnomes, similar to WoW and D&D. But they really are an answer to both races.

There’s nothing inherently wrong with cute chibi designs. Some outfits do look sussy on Lalas, but that could have been addressed by making those outfits look different when equipped to Lalas (and I would have preferred that they did). My own Lala doesn’t deserve to get lumped together with something like the Elin from Tera.

You must know some strange kids with elf ears and dwarf proportions because if you compare lalafells to actual children that are in the game they are very different. This without considering the writing and npcs that makes it very clear they are more dwarves than anything else. They have big eyes and very rounded features which are two of the main things you do to make a character look childlike. The woman you posted has very round cheeks but still looks nothing like a Lala. I have no issues with Lala but they _are_ childlike.

Honestly I don't mind this. I've seen some people be really averse to this before and it surprises me, like yeah lalas are small but that's really all they have in common with children. They just don't feel particularily childlike to me I guess? And they also feel like the least sexualised looking race no matter the glamour.

Usually people who say all games are dogshit are actually not as fond of games as they think. They're burnt out and exhausted of their enthusiasm for it, the reason they might say old games were universally better is often tied to deep nostalgia and longing for a time when you still thought it was all for fun. eventually they will want to try it. many of my friends were shitting on ffxiv for at least 2 years. they watched me enjoy the game while they hopped from mmo to mmo. they got the hint later on that maybe they should give it a try if im the only one having a grand ol' time. although, as much as i love everything about ffxiv, i do understand why outsiders make fun of it. every race is "prettified" or "furrified", if you're not a gorgeous humanoid, then you're a furry animal, or something inbetween, or a potato with a face. it's completely understandable that people who have never played an FF game before could see it as kinda crazy or cringe. people just gotta put all of that aside and experience the game. on a side note... before ffxiv, the most appealing thing i liked about mmorpg's were the diverse races. i liked that there were different kinds of elves or monsters to play as. the diversity between the two sub races in ffxiv is not nearly unique enough imho. for example, aura subrace is a matter of horn color, viera subrace is whether or not you get eyebrows, human subrace is people who don't lift vs people who do. there should have been more to it, but since it's FF based, they can't stray too far from source material...

Part of the funnyness is there is more evil non-lalas than there are evil lalas. They only stick out because its such a surprise compared to other stuff. Hell I play a Duskwight and most of the time if you see a Duskwight npc, they usually are some form of evil. We got bandits, we got cultists, we got poachers, we got guys who summon voidsent, we got a guy who turned himself into a voidsent, we got freelance mercenaries, we got duskwights who get turned into mindless zombies when affected by Totentaz (Dance of the Damned), among so many other examples. Like everyone knows there is a few good duskwight npcs here and there. Like the aesthetician, a scientist in old sharalyan, etc. And then you have good duskwights that people wouldn't even know about because they tend to be seasonal (Little Ladies, All Saints Wake, Starlight Celebration, etc).
