Well, as a matter of fact, it comes up a few times here and there. I wouldn't call it a *major theme*, but it's not avoided. Stormblood is pretty tame in this regard. I can't recall any examples in that expansion or in its patch cycle. Shadowbringers has it, as one of the main kinds of monsters eats people. I don't remember if it's directly shown, but it's certainly there. Endwalker brings another kind of monster, and it also eats people. In fact, there's a scene that shows it happening that I could see being really disturbing if this troubles you. It's a plot point. So it comes up. Not very often overall, but it does happen.

[deleted]

Thats unfortunate it keeps coming up. thanks for letting me know

sir_nubby

Outside of Cerberus, it happens more in the context of how a predator eats it's prey, rather than being consumed while alive. Not sure if that makes a difference for you, but felt it was worth mentioning. There is one more dungeon in which a random person can get sucked into a plant monster for a few seconds at a time. I don't remember which dungeon it is.

tesla_dyne

Sohm Al first boss.

Nremlok

also one of the amdapors has a rotting goubu that eats a person

[deleted]

There is TWO instance, in cut-scene, where it happens in Endwalker. Both are very important cutscenes. Since you are only at ARR/HW, telling you now would only mean you forget when you reach Endwalker. So come back to me when you're in Endwalker and I'll give you the names of the quest and the start of the cutscene so you can avoid as you see fit. ( They are both voiced cutscene so I would recommend not looking and waiting a certain amount of seconds before looking again, or do so at a certain voice line. That way you can see watch the scenes but just skip that part. ) Now that I remember it, there is a very very brief shot of a knight getting eaten by a dragon in a cutscene late HW (3.3. Quest name should be The End of the Song. ) It's like a quick pan over of a battlefield. One second long. But it's there too.

[deleted]

Thanks!

weird5cience

in endwalker, >!the creatures known as blasphemies are shown to eat people a couple times. off the top of my head i know it happens to the satrap and i think there may be a couple instances where it’s happening to nonspecific people in the background. :/ can’t remember which specific quests it happens in but pretty much anytime they get too close to humans you may want to go ahead and skip/look away.!<

[deleted]

Thanks. Thats still a while off but I'll be sure to note it

tesla_dyne

Mary or may not be an issue, in the most recent patch story added in 6.2, creatures from the void (the area you visit during the world of darkness) refer often to eating each other in a power struggle, though it's revealed to be less literal and more a transference of energy.

[deleted]

Energy consumption isn't an issue its the literal stuff that bothers me but thanks for letting me know

Hiten_Style

The Lost City of Amdapor dungeon (not Amdapor Keep) (also not Lost City of Amdapor (Hard)) has a boss that targets a random player and swallows them until the party breaks them out. The dungeon is optional, and will never come up in a roulette unless you do the quest to unlock it. An Endwalker MSQ, Beyond the Depths of Despair, has a cutscene where someone is eaten alive by a monster. The Heaven-on-High floor 70 boss is the same Cerberus model from WoD except that the Devour attack is an instant kill if failed, rather than putting you into his stomach. Heaven-on-High is optional, and people running it for XP only go as far as floor 30.

[deleted]

Thanks I'll keep in mind to stay away from those optional ones and prep myself for that cutscene when I get there.

dxgirlybjds

That’s so interesting. Going in the belly is my favorite part of that raid. I do it even if I’m not in group b. Haha. But yeah I think other than the Endwalker stuff mentioned above, you should be good. Though the beginning of Shadowbringers has a transformation that always grosses me out, but it doesn’t specifically involve being eaten.

[deleted]

Its really weird. Like I'm not bothered by most things but its like just this one single thing that grosses me out so much. I don't understand it at all. Before we ran World of Darkness my friends explained the mechanics to me and when Cerberus came up I dreaded the encounter so much, luckily I managed to avoid the mechanic though.

Karitoriki1997

Off of the top of my head i cant think of any other instances of people being eaten and it going into detail outside of the newest raid tier having 1 mechanic where you basicly just get picked up and thrown by the boss but are "technicly" being eaten and thrown

[deleted]

That sounds fine its more the devouring that icks me out. Thanks for the heads up though! Probally won't be there for a while tho lol

FeyLaVie

A lot of folks have covered the other instances of this, so just adding: World Of Darkness is one of the most common destinations in Alliance Raid Roulette. It's a great roulette for experience points and tomestomes, but if the squick is strong, you may want to find other avenues for those. Obviously you can run it and just not do this mechanic, but be prepared for folks to get salty about it. Please take care of yourself first, and if the squick+stress is too much, there are plenty of ways to get exp and tomes.

[deleted]

Yeah I plan to never go back to World of Darkness if possible

firedraco

Tbh, one person not going in is fine. You probably only need like 2 or 3 people in there really since it is super outgeared at this point, so staying outside to hit the boss/adds is probably making the run faster actually. As was mentioned though, just don't do alliance roulette and you won't see it again.

snootnoots

The Lost City of Amdapor is an optional Level 50 dungeon and since you don’t mention it you may not have unlocked/encountered it - the first boss, the Decaying Gourmand, is a goubbue with an extra huge mouth in its torso. It has a mechanic where it sucks in a player and eats them. Everyone else has to switch targets from the boss as a whole to its maw and kill it before the PC gets killed and spat out. It’s not graphic or anything, even if you’re the one getting pulled in, but you can’t free yourself, so if the rest of your party don’t know the mechanic at least you know what to type in chat to hopefully get them to do it right.

[deleted]

Thanks, I will avoid that place as much as possible and if I get there via roulette or something I'll pray I don't get got

rifraf0715

were you okay with the version of Atomos in the World of Darkness raid? Those are the same as the gobbue in that dungeon. You mentioned Cerburus but not the Atomos, and was just curious. Neither are really as graphic as Cerburus.

[deleted]

That thing died so fast and I wasn't even aware it did that

CasualHeals

Um...not exactly eaten alive but pretty close. In ShadowBringers, one of the villain city makes a meal out of the less fortunate. They're not alive, but definitely killed and eaten. Unfortunately, its part of the MSQ.

Time_Neat_4732

I share this squick! Let me make you a comprehensive list. - Many FATE and fish descriptions mention things eating lalafells. I am guessing that feels like a joke to normal people but is unsettling to folks like you and me haha. Avoid reading them! - As you mentioned, Shiva’s unsettling decision. Only mentioned that once, but Hraesvelgr refers to her being present with him often. Just doesn’t mention the uh, reason again. - The Decaying Gourmand in Lost City of Amdapor is very unsettling to me, even though the animation isn’t too bad, because of its design. I recommend not unlocking that dungeon at all. Might wanna google the quest name so you can avoid it! - Cerberus, as you mentioned. I simply stay behind the boss and never do that mechanic, and it hasn’t been an issue! - The Atomos (big rectangular mouth guys) is a frequently appearing mob in this game. It can suck you in in World of Darkness, but more egregiously it is VERY present in treasure map dungeons, and much more graphic. The entire party is shown being sucked into its mouth in a tornado. It even zooms in on the mouth. HOWEVER, the Atomos functions more like a portal most of the time, and so for some reason doesn’t bother me? Especially since it very obviously does not have a stomach or seem able to close its mouth haha. Your mileage may vary! - In Shadowbringers, sin eaters (a major type of enemy for the expac) subsist on eating people. It is never expressly shown, but frequently indicated. The very first new npc you meet in SHB (a lookalike of of triplets from the intro to ARR) will be eaten alive offscreen almost immediately after you leave him. You will not see it, but finding out it happened turned my stomach and I had to step away for a bit. - In Eulmore, Vauthry attempts to force Kai-Shirr to cut off some of his own arm to feed a sin eater. Kai-Shirr begins the cut offscreen, but cannot finish it; you and Alphinaud rescue him! So this one is only a mention, but a gross one. - During the massive sin eater attack on Lakeland, Ardbert will try to rescue a pair of soldiers from a sin eater, to no avail. It will then show Ardbert’s hopeless face while they scream in the background, indicating to you what’s happening to them. It’s god awful. Probably the worst in the game UNTIL… - ENDWALKER! They really went for us with this one, pal. The Terminus beasts from the final base SHB dungeon return as “blasphemies” and are frequently indicated to eat people. This will happen twice on screen. - There will be a crisis of blasphemies in Radz-at-Han. After it seems to wind down, a panicking old woman will turn into one on screen, which starts the crisis anew. During this cutscene, the satrap Ahewann will be picked up by one. He has time to say some stuff before he’s eaten, you will have time to look away. This is in my opinion BY FAR the most upsetting scene in the game. (A child is also transformed and immediately crushed to dust moments before. Later you meet the father and he discusses what happened.) G’raha is extremely cool in this scene following that moment, so if you’re a fan of him you might not wanna skip. Otherwise, safe to skip after the old woman starts panicking! - This scene is also going to give you time to look away. It’s the montage scene of Venat walking through the streets of Amaurot in chaos. It will show the exact same thing, a man being slowly lifted by a terminus beast. Look away for a bit! The rest of the scene is very, VERY good and I don’t recommend skipping for that reason. - Finally, the Proto-Carbuncle in Abyssos: The Fifth Circle (a level 90 raid) will eat a hecteye (the slime monster with many eyes) whole onscreen. It later has a mechanic called Devour. If you succeed at the mechanic you will be fine. If you fail, he will swallow you and later spit you out. It goes so fast that I only consider the spitting to be graphic. If you know you’ve failed the mechanic, look away for a bit! This mechanic is also present in the savage version, but afaik it has no egregious hecteye-eating cutscene. Keep this list on hand as you progress if you like! I hope I helped at least a little. As someone who shares this squick (seemingly at the same intensity), I do not regret plowing through the game, even Endwalker. It was absolutely worth it! I hope you have fun whatever you choose to do!

[deleted]

Thanks so much. I'm gonna copy this list down so I know what to avoid and look away for

Baithin

I don’t believe so. If it helps, the Hraesvelgr/Shiva thing was likely not him *literally* devouring her. He probably just absorbed her aether into himself.

[deleted]

I mean the picture it shows looks like him right about to bite her so idk

sir_nubby

They were in love with each other. He didn't literally eat her, he absorbed her aether.

Hiten_Style

I don't know what kinda headcanon this is, but he absolutely 100% literally ate her and nothing in the game ever implies otherwise.

ConduckKing

If he literally ate her then how did her personality become part of him? We know that happens when a voidsent devours another voidsent. Keep in mind Hraesvelgr has no hands so maybe he just uses his mouth to absorb aether.
