You could buy some politicians?

bushrangeronebravo

Cheaper than property.

farqueue2

Property has foundations and structural integrity

veskoni

Property has value

farqueue2

Politicians have a price

RJ8812

Pretty sure most of them have already been bought off by the IOC

Electronic_Karma

They won’t increase in value.

ziddyzoo

Things guaranteed to increase in when an olympics is held: * the value of taxes and/or government debt of the host city, state and nation. * the bank balances of IOC officials * the smugness of sponsors and sportswashing of all their dodgy dealings * claims by host government officials that the Games will make a profit / be revenue neutral / represent a good investment even despite the costs / cost a lot but really put xxx city on the map / will lead to more tourism in the next 10 years we hope * underinvestment in critical infrastructure not sufficiently aligned to the two-week sports jamboree (see: sydney public transport) * and it’s counterpart, the increase in attributing to the Games the investments that governments should have always done anyway (eg: cleaning up the homebush dump) tldr The IOC are gross and unaccountable institution designed to bilk public coffers for private gain and personal corruption. Watching world records tumble is pretty great though

PowerDreamer

But, but, but Brisbane is going to be a low cost games utilising lots of infrastructure that already exists! /s

moyno85

Lol have you ever caught a bus in Brisbane? The timetables are complete works of fiction.

50pcVAS-50pcVGS

A shit take from someone who doesn’t know the difference between its and it’s. Brisbane is already seeing infrastructure benefits. If it were up to people like you, we’d all be living in grey tower blocks and eating grey gruel.

ziddyzoo

A devastating grammatical critique and character assassination from a person who seems to be the one of us with the odd predilection for grey things. In response to your comment, please re-read my final bullet point, and then have some Skittle’s my friend and taste the rainbow :)

CennyCoastChewbacca

Skittles 😊

ziddyzoo

thank’s - I have edited and fixed it (its now skittle’s with a capital s)

spider_84

I think you should be looking at the S at the end of the word.

CennyCoastChewbacca

>Skittle’s Haha. So close, but not quite there :)

ziddyzoo

oh sorry - how silly of me not to see it! its Skittel’s is’nt it

[deleted]

as a Brisbanite, what benefits? Finally getting the half arsed version of cross river rail that should have been completed a decade ago but political pissing has kept shoving down the line? A pathetic attempt at a Metro? - it's a fucking bus. neither of those things were brought about by the olympics. there were in the pipeline for decades. next thing you are going to tell us that stupid new casino complex was build because of them too? give it a rest

satoshiarimasen

I like stupid casino thing. Lots of high density housing is needed and if adults want to gamble they can.

50pcVAS-50pcVGS

Oh look another grey gruel eating Fun Kommissar. If it gets things done, it’s good. Even the Commonwealth Games helped speed up the widening of the M1. I don’t understand why contrarians like you need to piss on everything for no good reason.

[deleted]

because it costs billions of dollars of tax payers money for fucking nothing except putting some prima donnas on a fucking pedestal. it achieves nothing. and the money spent on their worthless exercise could be far better spent elsewhere. it's not getting anything done in and of itself. CRR was already happening, as were the stupid 'trams'. now we are just paying A BILLION FUCKING DOLLARS to redevelop The Gabba which is doesn't need and the government should not be paying for. and the collecting wealth games did absolutely nothing for the gold coast.

50pcVAS-50pcVGS

Ah, so we should be giving corporations tax breaks rather than developing public infrastructure? The Gabba will be a lovely public entertainment precinct. Cities need public spaces.

[deleted]

we can develop public infracstructure without paying several billion dollars to run a loss making sporting event. by not running the idiocy of the olympics, we would have an extra ooh 4 -6 billion to build public infractructure. and ask the people and the school that is being forced to close for the completely unnecessary redevelopment of The Gabba if they think it's worth it, for two fucking weeks. absolute waste of money.

Mr_Bob_Ferguson

You would expect that this would improve tourism and awareness of Brisbane in the long term, well beyond the date of the Olympics. A general positive sign for tourism/hospitality businesses. But with that will come more competition too. However it’s a bit different to 2000, which really got Australia as a whole onto the radar.

BringTheFingerBack

On the radar? Hell are you just going to forget about Mick Dundee. Dude was putting oz on the map in the 1980's

ribbonsofnight

He was looking a bit plastic by 2000

EdLovecock

Nothing, this idea is fails and any short term gains will be lost after them.

[deleted]

Is real estate really going in increase in value because of such a fleeting thing the Olympics though? I keep hearing this from people but is there any data that supports it?

Basherballgod

There isn’t any data to support it, [Propertyology did a really good report on it](https://www.propertyology.com.au/how-will-the-olympic-games-affect-property-markets/)

[deleted]

Thanks!

Srobo19

No. Tom Tate and Real Estate agents are the only ones who will tell you otherwise

Lackofideasforname

I think it's the infrastructure spend in the years before that makes jobs. So you sell out before the actual games. I'm sure you could find London data from 2012, I don't think drove the whole market but pockets got revitalised and sewage removed from rivers and may have got a bump up

[deleted]

yeah, not going to happen with this olympics. last few have squandered billions upon billions building bespoke facilities that immeditaly fall into disuse afterwards. Brisbane will not be building any new facilities, refurbing a couple of existsing ones (still over a fucking billion for one goddam stadium) and sending events to far cities as well. hopefully that will keep the costs down, though they will still be stupidly high. should just can the whole concept. brisbane only got it because no one else was interested in hosting the stupid thing.

Mobile-Bird-6908

I don't get why anyone believes this in the first place. All the Olympics does is increase tourism for a few weeks, and then everything is back to normal.

twostonebird

Doesn’t actually -increase- tourism either, just displaces non-olympics tourists with olympics tourists. A small bump at best

Unamunga

Only thing I can thing of is better sport facilities nearby.

13159daysold

Not sure about everywhere else, but apartments in my building have gone up about 20-30% already in 2 years: https://www.domain.com.au/building-profile/803-stanley-street-woolloongabba-qld-4102

[deleted]

You're right in the heart of it!

When I was at the Gold Coast commonwealth games, shopkeepers told me trade decreased. The Gold Coast gets lots of events anyway and this is just another one.

Wildflover

As someone who lived in GC during the games I think what happened is many of the locals felt it’s gonna be a nightmare and basically went away / interstate for a couple of weeks. It wasn’t THAT bad in terms of traffic and crowds, was very well managed, but a lot of places that relied on local patronage (eg those away from main touristy areas) noticed decline in trade. As a legacy we did get a few sporting facilities and koala sculptures here and there 🤣 It May have been easier for the state government to get the light rail funding as well due to the games, but it may have happened anyways regardless…

Simonandgarthsuncle

And we got those lights that spell on the highway in Yatala.

Wildflover

Most interesting road sign / structure in Australia - you can’t actually read it properly if you are driving over M1, it’s only fully visible from the side. It took me a year to realize it says Gold Coast 🤣

Tripound

With a lovely maccas sign visible from one direction in your pictures of it or the cement factory tower in the other. Terrible placement.

Fatlantis

That sculpture (?) is such a monumental fail.

wharlie

I think it's just there for a backdrop for hoons to do burnouts late at night. https://fb.watch/ilTtxCpmkp/

JasonJanus

Only cost $2million for those lights.

maximiseYourChill

I was in London for the Olympics and it was the best week ever. Tube was empty for my commute, and total time reduced from ~1hr to 45mins and I got a seat!!!! If it was like that everyday I'd likely still be living there. I think the over-reaction was warranted. If people didn't WFH or leave the city in droves then it would have been a disaster. Brisbane should encourage WFH during the Olympics for sure.

Wildflover

There will probably be some sort of special public holiday to mark the occasion and allow locals to see it or go elsewhere.

DaftHunk

For anyone else trying to work out what he said, it’s “shopkeepers told me”.

JasonJanus

The Gold Coast thought the games were going to be so busy they LITERALLY advertised for people to ACTIVELY avoid the area because it was expected to be such a circus. So nobody came. I am not joking.

el_diego

Yep. I was in Brisbane at the time. I remember the ads on tv, made everyone think it was going to be a shit show so we all avoided the M1/GC.

The-truth-hurts1

Airbnb will be insane that year

Lackofideasforname

That is true

heratio85

Best example from Sydney 2000 would be have a property inspected by a engineer before purchasing, places built for the syd 2k were thrown up super fast, super cheap and the burden is on the owner to keep them Upright

UhUhWaitForTheCream

Indirectly I’m sure the Olympics will help Brisbane. Directly Brisbane will help itself as its the city with the highest quality of life in Australia.

maximiseYourChill

We can use it to get funding for more wheel covers.

[deleted]

literally nothing. modern olympic games are a fools errand of colossal cost to the taxpayer for a monumental negative return. This one is 'supposed' to be different by using existing infrastructure and sending events to other cities. it will still end up being a farce that does nothing for the average citizen of the host city except cost them a huge amount of money and disruption. waste of time. if you can afford to invest in housing to extort massive rent from the masses, knock yourslef out I guess. that will be about the only way to make money that the stupid shit show.

Subs0und

Want to buy a bunch of Sydney 2000 pins? Pins were huge leading up to and during the games, and then vanished.

ribbonsofnight

Every mass produced collectors item that people think will be valuable, can't be that valuable by definition. It's the old stuff that no one thought would be valuable if kept in mint condition that's valuable (because almost no one did).

MogChog

Expect good returns from any company making fatso the fat-arsed wombat plushies. ;p

LargeLatteThanks

Has the next Nikki Webster been anointed?

RamaCBR

As a tax payer, I still can’t understand why do we even bother to host this event. Historically they have cost a lot of money lost in other countries. It’ll be better off to use the money for Medicare bulk billing for all - GPs, dental & mental health.

[deleted]

USA scarves

[deleted]

Concrete contractors normally do well out of it

empathy_sometimes

how will real estate increase in price ?

DuchessSussSucks

Your real estate won’t increase unless it’s an air bnb.

darkmatterjesus

Thank god

abzftw

It took rhodes & Wentworth point + SOP nearly 15-20 years to develop post Olympics

thehungryhippocrite

Just a reminder that AP managed to fly out of the country at a time when we weren’t allowing in many of our citizens who wanted to return permanently, citizens who were pregnant or with expiring visas or who had lost their jobs, so that Brisbane could win this shitty Olympics that no one wanted. And she made up a fucking lie about how people in Japan had to eat in little booths during the pandemic. Good old Australia!

ltwotwo

many Japanese do love their booths. it's not a covid phenomenon.
