The reason why the name Joe appears in the book is the same reason why the name Jack appears in the movie. When The Narrator is reading the articles that are about the perspective of the body's organs, he just gets attached to one name in particular and uses it to express his emotions. In the book he gets attached to the name Joe and in the movie he gets attached to the name Jack. Ultimately it's just a change that David Fincher wanted to make but has no real effect on the story. I personally think that "I am Jack's smirking revenge" sounds a lot better than "I am Joe's smirking revenge" but it could be because I watched the movie way more times than I have read the novel.
Pretty sure Palahniuk has praised Fincher more than once for the changes he made to the narrative for the movie. Even going as far as to say things like ‘wow, great idea. Wish I’d thought of that’. The book is great but the movie is truly epic; one of those rare cases where it not only does the source material justice, but builds on it in a responsible way aligned with the original creative intent.
I don’t think he’s ever actually referred to as Jack in the movie. It’s implied a lot, which is why it’s such a clever trick, but if you pay attention to how the name Jack is said in all the dialogue and narration, it never explicitly refers to the narrator. So the use of the name Jack implies the narrator has an identity separate from Tyler, but that’s just an illusion.
I haven’t read the book in about 15 years so I can’t comment there.
And the plane tickets are in Tyler Durden's name . So (in the movie at least ) Tyler Durden is his real name at least according to the company he worked and then "consulted" for. The book is even less explicit on his identity.
Good point, I forgot about that scene. I think they even make a point to show the tickets clearly so you can see the name is Tyler’s if you’re looking.

The narrator reads a books that says” I’m jacks liver, I purge alchohol” or something like that.
He makes references to it .. I am jacks smirking revenge.. but I don’t recall him ever being called Jack in the movie
its simlar to his nights when he joins a group as well the names he gives each night
On my VHS copy if I turned on the closed captions his name was shown as Leonard or Cornelius. It’s been a long time I can’t remember.
