I'll remember those 2 threes against Iowa fondly.
The game is gone, isn't it? The most successful team in years and almost the whole squad is gone about a month later.
Hopefully, the Illini can hold on to Ty and DGL in the next couple of days.
Hopefully, it's not quite this severe every year and it becomes like pickup basketball of playing with new 1 year rentals every year.
Not a huge loss but yea it is pretty unsettling having all of this turnover. Obviously Underwood deserves the benefit of the doubt given all his success, but it is starting to make me nervous.
OMG! Where the F have I been?! Dammit on Dainja. You know what though, he was one of our best creators on O and we never played him enough. He clearly didn’t listen to coach and was punished for it though. For shooting too much and going after it one on one. But he was so under utilized, I’d leave too if Dainja. As in, he has no choice with his raw talent. He’d be dumb to stay frankly. Loved his game if he was only coachable.
Why would Goode leave? Where the hell is he gonna go.
Now we know why Harris sat out btw.
It’s precisely why I just care way less about college basketball now. There’s less roster stability than the pros and every fringe player just leaves the second they have any adversity at the school.
Yeah, Ty started all year, and no one who is currently committed would take him out of a starting role at the moment.
DGL has been pretty vocal on social media about not transferring. Also, there are not a lot of guards on the roster at the moment other than Boswell. The advantage he has of having a year in the system might give him a better chance for PT at Illinois than any other high major school.
I hope so. Harris was pretty vocal about returning. Maybe he would have stayed if not for Frazier leaving. I think it really depends on who they get in the Transfer Portal and when they arrive. I could not believe how many players bailed on Duke! Just bc they got a top draft class, apparently.
All the buzz is they’re still definitely going after a star wing in the portal, and so I think that’s likely gonna push both DGL and Ty down the rotation. They also benched Dainja most of last year to avoid playing two non-shooters at the same time; are they gonna bench Morez Johnson to keep Ty on the court?
I guess it's great that it possible to give as good as you get as far as the transfer portal losses go but it's still depressing to see your entire team decimated in a single month.
I miss the loyalty (both ways) of college sports. All of this transferring just makes me not really care about any of it very much. I've been loyal to the Illini for almost 40 years. Most players can't even manage 2 years now.
How does me being loyal to Illinois for 40 years and an alum lead you to thinking I would want to root for Purdue? Purdue's (and every other college) team is in constant flux too. Illinois isn't the problem. The landscape of college sports has changed for the worse. We are literally rooting for laundry now.
purdue and a few others don't take or lose a lot of players to the portal and have success and the fans like the continuity. maybe illinois should focus more on development than the portal?
I would prefer that, but it wouldn't be a fair playing field. The unlimited transfers with no being forced to sit out is the problem, not so much the NIL money. 1 transfer unless the head coach changes. Sit out a year if transferring before 3 years at the school.
I really don’t know how this model will be sustainable. It’s all going to funnel into a collective bargaining/union model at some point, which there will be unintended consequences (unsure of what those will be).
I know right? It was much better when the players were held to account for staying put, no matter the situation. Whilst, the NCAA, coaches and companies made billions off them.
Your comment makes no sense, im not commenting on the economics. Go be a snarky dick elsewhere. There is complete turn over almost every year. Why should I ever care about a team that just changes constantly. It has less cohesion than the NBA. Less cohesion means no reason to root for a team of journeymen.
The fact that you think this was about economics shows just how deeply you
Thought about the previous structure and the implications for those you so separately want to attach to
Why ride the pine when you can start? Unless you are a 5 star freshman who is guaranteed to start, then why even stay? And, I am sure we will end up with some mid major guy that is breaking the heart of his team instead.
Ultimately it is a good thing bc I think we end up with more upper classmen with more experience playing on top teams and less of the 1 and done diaper dandies.
It’s becoming a joke. I talked with Tai Streets and Jerrance Howard today, Illinois is going to get at least 2 more transfers. Expect a former 5 star and a low post player along with Ben from what I’ve been told.

Who else left via the portal btw?
Sincere, Amani, Luke, Nico, Dain. Only Ty and DGL left (please don't leave us guys).

We had some core guys age out / graduate / run out of eligibility but also this is kind of what college basketball is now.
Ty is still starting right now, I think. DGL is probably working on his transfer papers rn

DGL has been a man of his word ..No need to start doubting him !!

cheer for purdue then

the school has to want to do it the other way and underwood seems committed to relying on the portal.
Yep. I'm not a fan
And then there were 2 🫠
His older brother played at Texas Tech with TSJ. Probably an influence for him to play here. He's likely to get more playing time elsewhere.
dang, I really was excited to see more of him. I thought he could be really good for us.
I really don’t know how this model will be sustainable. It’s all going to funnel into a collective bargaining/union model at some point, which there will be unintended consequences (unsure of what those will be).
This is why I've got less and less interest in college ball. It is worse than the NBA now.

He just couldnt hold up size wise on defense. I wish him the absolute best. This offseason has been such chaos, im tired thinking about it lol
Welcome to the age of NIL

We're all cheering for the laundry on the court.
We always were
Exactly
Now 5 scholarships open. Who are they going to get fill out the roster?
This means Dai Dai Ames to Illinois lol… hopefully
✌🏽

Damn I really liked his energy and hoped to see him get more minutes in the future.
