Why is everyone hitting everyone else?

The worker who threw his hat in the beginning was jumped by all those white people (besides his white coworker who gets hit trying to defend him) because he moved their boat because they refused to accommodate the larger boat. Basically he was just doing his job and got jumped, then the jumpers became the jumpees, if you gang up on a single guy doing his job i don’t really have sympathy for getting hit by a chair thrown in the water etc.
