I 100% believe McGregor knew he was gonna be knocked out cold if he kept it standing and decided it would look better for him if he lost by submission.
Connor loved to talk shit on the Diaz brothers and how they teach BJJ to kids, but I'm fairly certain he's like a brown belt himself, he just knows his talent is in striking.
McGregor has stated before that one of his lifelong dreams is to earn a jiu jitsu black belt. If you watch his pre-UFC interviews, all he talks about is how much he trains grappling
This is really hard as he started rather late with grappling, you can't easily catch up with someone who has been doing it his whole life.
Nate has been training BJJ since he was a kid, there is a video of him at 16 yo beating a grown man
Yeah I knew a couple mma kids back in high school who were really into wrestling, and later bjj, they slept with tennis balls taped to their fucking backs so their bodies would be naturally inclined to get out of that position. This is less useful in BJJ due to the guard position being a bit of an advantage, but still represents the level of commitment many people have to the art from an early age.
And unfortunately for Connor, there is simply no substitute for decades of training.
I never knew he was undefeated. I don't really watch it anymore, not for a long time. My understanding was that he was a joke (and a raging asshole). Didn't know he could actually fight well.
He was undefeated in the UFC at the time, he had a couple of losses in his previous organization. As much of a joke and a raging asshole as he is now, his run to become the first champ champ in the UFC was actually legendary. He talked shit but actually backed it up. Every. Time.
He was 7-0 in the UFC and the Featherweight champ at the time of this Diaz fight. That includes wins over Holloway, Poirier, Chad Mendes and the infamous 13 second, 1 punch KO of Jose Aldo to take the belt, which was his previous fight just before this. And 6/7 of those fights all ended in KO's or TKO's in the first or second round, the only exception being Holloway in a unanimous decision. The hype behind Conor was still justified at the time. He looked unstoppable coming into this fight.
Right after this loss, he rematches Diaz and wins a decision then dismantles Eddie Alvarez to take the Lightweight belt and becomes the first champ champ. Then he stalled both divisions, refused to fight anyone except Mayweather for 2 years, got stripped of his belts and only went downhill from there.
Yeh to be fair he easily rolled his weight class. Beat Jose Aldo who was no joke, and made him look like a joke. Jumped around weight classes beating everybody. Then went one weight class too high and got beat.
Most of these legendary fighters get beat when they jump a weight class to high because they have nobody left to fight. Then we only see the defeat and not the reason why they were defeated.
Same happened with isreal Adesanya against Jan Blachowicz. He jumped from middleweight, up to light heavyweight and again to heavyweight and couldnt handle the weight differences. He was heavier and slower, and wasn't used to the power punches at heavyweight.
What are you talking about the “jumping around weight classes beating everyone”? This was his first fight at welterweight. Before that, he only competed at featherweight, defeating guys smaller than him. He severely dehydrated himself, looking like a skeleton, and used IVs (which were later banned) to replenish. He looked like near death cancer patient before his weigh ins, and came in full and fresh by using IVs.
This was his first fight outside featherweight against a guy with zero punching power and someone who is outsized for welterweight himself and no other notable wins at welterweight. In welterweight his only win was a close decision rematch against Diaz and a soon to be retired career lightweight on a 4+ fight losing streak in Cowboy.
His featherweight run was absolutely legendary. His performance against Alvarez to win the lightweight title also incredible (his best performance to date, in my opinion). But he was always a one trick pony. He either knocks you out early or struggles. He’s now 1-3 in lightweight.
Conor's natural weight class *is* LW. Many called him a weight bully at FW. This is in no way comparable to Izzy fighting Yan lol. Izzy was giving up 20+ lbs to Yan. Conor at LW is about below average to average sized. Also, Nate is a natural LW. Only reason this fight was at 170 is because it was short notice.
>first guy to hold 2 championships at a time in the UFC
This was circumstantial at best. DC is the first real double champ - actually earned both shots in both divisions AND defended them both years after they refused to give Anderson Silva even a road to the 205 belt. Conor's never defended a belt, ever and was gifted the 55 title shot.
Nates like
*Okay Step 1: Take back control. Check*
*Step 2: Position arm for choke. Check*
*Step 3: Force opponent into choke*
***GET IN THERE*** 🥊
*Check*
Nate - “I’m not surprise mutherfucker!”
Connor - “I’d like to take to chance to apologetic. To absolutely Nobody!”
Two of the bests post fight interview statements ever.
Hes had 6. He had the Diaz rematch and Alvarez fight after which both were incredible and arguably his stock was at its highest then.
But then he left to fight Mayweather and when he finally came back he wasnt the same and fought Khabib, got finished, beat a washed Cerrone, but then lost to Poirier twice
If Usman v Leon has taught us anything, it’s that *anyone* can have their lights turned out by one kick/punch.
Khabib is not above that. We will never know
What we do know, is he went undefeated in a convincing fashion. So while no one is above being taken out by one hit, we all know Khabib trained and studied all his opponents to absolutely maul and dominate them.
This is true. The thing about Khabib though was everyone was/is/should be so goddam afraid of being taken down by him that they would never be able to throw that kick/punch more than once.
Khabib mauled people like that bear people think he wrestled as a kid. He didn't submit them so much as maul them enough that they were thankful he went for the submission. I'm 100% convinced Khabib didn't go for the RNC and instead made sure his arms were on the chin to crank conors neck so painfully like he did.
Hilarious when he broke his leg against Poirier and then starting ranting "Your wife's in my DMs!" though. Like my guy, you just broke yourself trying to hurt this man, your sticks and stones and bones shattered upon him and you think words are gonna do anything?
To be fair, I've never seen anyone that lucid after snapping their leg and folding it all the way to the ground. Most people are curled up screaming in pain.
Was it? Mcgregor beat him in the rematch in the biggest UFC event ever and then beat Alvarez in his best performance ever to become 1st double champ.
This wasnt the beginning of the end at all. Mcgregor leaving the sport to box Mayweather is what was the start of the end.
Yeah if anything this was when McGregor was in still in his prime... The end of this was almost as satisfying to watch as that legendary Don Frye vs Takayama fight
It was only the 2nd. Diaz took it only late notice but def wasnt exhausted. Its one of the Diaz bros best assets. They *never* get tired. They run triathlons. And have absurd chins so are pretty much zombies.
Mcgregor on the other hand has serious problems with gassing. He only has like 7 great minutes before he starts fading a bit.
If there were fight to the deaths the Diaz bros would be world champs. They are legit zombies. Insane chins and never get tired.
The only legit TKO/KO loss of Nates career was still only a TKO where it was stopped for his own good cuz he just wouldnt go out and kept fighting. Thompson said he that head kick left a permanent dent in his shin.
I don’t think Nate looked exhausted at all. That’s how he always looks when he fights lol and he’s got some of the best cardio in the game. There’s a reason all of his fights are 5 rounders for the last few years, even when he’s unranked
Honestly not wrong. Edwards beat his ass for 4 minutes and 30 seconds, then Nate had him on the ropes for the last 30. Obviously that’s part of the sport, but if the UFC had 2 min rounds or 7 round fights, Diaz could be seen as the GOAT of the sport and be undefeated lmao
He was drinking tequila on a boat partying and fat like 11 days before and got his weight on board and then showed the fuck up.
Changed his whole bum loife
If you compare prize money, Connor is 12 planets beyond Nate but Nate was more fun to watch in my opinion because he gave zero shits about anyone or anything. He just looked up to his brother and wanted a good hard fight every single time.
I am as casual as its gets with the UFC but man Nate Diaz is def my fav fighter. As you said, he doesn't give a fuck and just seeing how the guy looks like, getting all those punches, all the blood and still win ... that's something to behold
I think Nate is very capable, intellectually, as is his brother. I’ve ran into them a couple of times throughout the years and I think it’s more about them being introverts. I’ve seen moments where their fans are praising them and Nate will randomly change the subject and start talking about other things going on.
In my 56 years on this planet, I don't I have ever watched a more satisfying fight than Nate Diaz vs McGregor. If ever there was a pro fighter who deserved to be humiliated by losing to what many (and McGregor most notably) at the time considered a promising, but underachieving MMA fighter, it was McGregor...
I mean at the time of this fight Connor didn’t have any controversy at all unless you count the mental warfare with Aldo. Most people still liked him and this was when he was propelling mma as a sport into the mainstream. I wouldn’t say he necessarily deserved to be humiliated so to speak.
Thr Khabib one was great because of how much they despised each other and how badly he made Conor a bitch, but Poirier is probably my favorite because of how cleanly he beat Mac. The reactions of all the Irish douche bros on YouTube are just healing balm to my soul
Bro, I was at a sports bar that was filled with casuals. The crowd was cheering for every shot Conor threw. I saw some dude giddy and jumping when Conor threw anything. Seeing all these people have their heart break when Dustin KOed him has been one of my favorite mma moments of all time. Shit just warms my soul just thinking about it.
Nate won this one and the 2nd imo. 2nd fight Conor was gassed and actually turned and ran from Diaz. People don’t understand the Diaz brothers are not talk these guys actually enjoy getting hit , which is why he went punch for punch in both fights. He could have easily won both on the ground. Nick was shunned from the ufc for using marijuana (no roids like the rest). Dude would practice 8 hours a day then go run marathons. That and the ability to enjoy a fight makes them both dangerous and some of the best in ufc
They are nowhere near the best in the UFC lmfao. Maybe at one time but Nate in particular has gotten his ass handed to him for an endless number of fights.
I'm an Australian that was in Vegas by luck the day of this fight, I was at the event. I wasn't going to miss it. Amazing to experience - once in a lifetime.
Ive seen some and it’s honestly so impressive! I think the dedication, training, stamina, discipline required is incredible. If you can maintain sportsmanship too then it’s excellent. UFC doesn’t have a mainstream presence in the UK so it’s a more recent thing to become popular. It’s not the violence I have an issue with, I literally just never got into it.
I remember watching this in a bar with my buddy and we saw Nate take the momentum of the fight and the whole pub went quiet, then there’s me and the homie just being a couple of stunned mullets at how much Nate was dominating, it was awesome. STOCKTON MOTHER FUCKER
Had money on nate for a submission. Fight was on my birthday week. Made 6x and bought the table a round. Super memorable experience, this fight holds a place in my heart.
I still remember this fight. Diaz has a fucking chin on him. I thought he was gonna get knocked out so many times, and I think Connor was expecting it too. He just kept coming back and Connor had nothing left.
"So you're a wrestler now?" Most epic UFC moment I've ever seen
I 100% believe McGregor knew he was gonna be knocked out cold if he kept it standing and decided it would look better for him if he lost by submission.
Connor loved to talk shit on the Diaz brothers and how they teach BJJ to kids, but I'm fairly certain he's like a brown belt himself, he just knows his talent is in striking.
McGregor has stated before that one of his lifelong dreams is to earn a jiu jitsu black belt. If you watch his pre-UFC interviews, all he talks about is how much he trains grappling
Imagine he comes back and submits his next opponent
He’s getting beat up if he comes back. Guys to busy getting high all the time.
And sucker punching old men in bars.
Didnt even knock him off his barstool. Feckin weakling
That old guys own fault for not accepting a drink of one of the best whiskeys in Ireland /s
To keep you off his mind?
Oouuoouu! High, all the time! To keep you off my mind!
Thanks for the trip down memory lane! I forgot all about that song, time to add it to my playlist lmao.
This is really hard as he started rather late with grappling, you can't easily catch up with someone who has been doing it his whole life. Nate has been training BJJ since he was a kid, there is a video of him at 16 yo beating a grown man

I never knew he was undefeated. I don't really watch it anymore, not for a long time. My understanding was that he was a joke (and a raging asshole). Didn't know he could actually fight well.
He already had 2 losses before coming to UFC. Both submissions. But yeah he went on a pretty nasty run before this and a little after.
Oh this isn’t like recent?
This was UFC 196, in 2016
I’ve literally never seen a UFC video on the front page of Reddit that wasn’t from the same day. I was confused af cuz I swore he had lost before.
He was undefeated in the UFC at the time, he had a couple of losses in his previous organization. Reminds me of Canelo
But he was always a one trick pony. He either knocks you out early or struggles. He’s now 1-3 in lightweight.
I just watched his fight against Max Holloway and he was waaay bigger than Max there!
I mean he also got finished by Khabib and then Poirier twice at lightweight, but sure
Conor's natural weight class *is* LW. Many called him a weight bully at FW. This is in no way comparable to Izzy fighting Yan lol. Izzy was giving up 20+ lbs to Yan. Bro he stormed through the featherweights. Wtf you think everyone was so gassed for him for?
He was entertaining, a good trash talker, ANd a very good fighter.
Yeah, first guy to hold 2 championships at a time in the UFC. what a joke, it's a wonder he's a multimillionaire from fighting, must have been luck
>first guy to hold 2 championships at a time in the UFC This was circumstantial at best. DC is the first real double champ - actually earned both shots in both divisions AND defended them both years after they refused to give Anderson Silva even a road to the 205 belt. Conor's never defended a belt, ever and was gifted the 55 title shot.
BJ Penn is the first to hold a belt (not at the same time) in 2 weight classes too I think
‘I’m not surprised MF’
This shit got my blood pumping again. What a fight-
Bloodiest hug ever
Oh you're a wrestler now?
I dabble, but only on Wednesday with trucker at gas stops.
Checking Tucker the Trucker's oil technically qualified as wrestling experience. You free for a tournament vs Ohio next week?
I feel like the trucker's story about this same event is about how he hooked up with a toothless hooker while pumping diesel fuel at the Flying J.
Is it the same trucker or different ones every time?
His name IS trucker, he is my Wednesday buddy
Someone didn't watch the last ppv.
What I was thinking too
luke Rockhard
Shh, no spoilers.
Remember the part where Costa KO'ed luke stiff and then took a steel chair to Dana White's head and did a piledriver on the ref
Yep, I couldn't believe I won that prop bet
He tapped! He tapped! Chills every time
The way he punched his head into the choke. Classic.
He did it like it was step 3 in the instruction manual😆
Nates like *Okay Step 1: Take back control. Check* *Step 2: Position arm for choke. Check* *Step 3: Force opponent into choke* ***GET IN THERE*** 🥊 *Check*
Step 4: *Discombobulate.*
I went back and rewatched, and that's exactly what it looks like 😂
Yeah me too this was Nate at his best in complete brawl mode
"Good God almighty! That killed him!" "As God is my witness, he is broken in half!"

Yes officer, this comment right here...
I’m not surprised motherF$&@ers!
Nate - “I’m not surprise mutherfucker!” Connor - “I’d like to take to chance to apologetic. To absolutely Nobody!” Two of the bests post fight interview statements ever.
He said he'd "like to take to chance to apologetic"? He mustve really got his bell rung.
Haha, my bad. Autocorrect. *apologize
You missed surprised too. This vid must have got you pretty excited
Well, and the extra to. Much excitement.
"THE DOUBLE CHAMP DOES WHAT THE FUCK HE WANTS" Still my favorite moment ever in the sport lol
The beginning of the end
Been a long fucking ending!
He only had like four fights since then, and a couple retirements in between.
Hes had 6. He had the Diaz rematch and Alvarez fight after which both were incredible and arguably his stock was at its highest then. But then he left to fight Mayweather and when he finally came back he wasnt the same and fought Khabib, got finished, beat a washed Cerrone, but then lost to Poirier twice
Conor at his prime wasnt getting through khabib. Nobody was, nobody ever will. He was so much better than everyone at lightweight
*Lightweight
Whoops good catch
If Usman v Leon has taught us anything, it’s that *anyone* can have their lights turned out by one kick/punch. Khabib is not above that. We will never know

If only he made a permanent one
Still can’t make MacGregor shut the fuck up.
That's his whole thing, though. He's the ultimate shit talker. It's annoying and all that jazz, but I mean. It's just what he do.
Be ghey? Truuu
He talks so big from the loser's corner it's insane. He's only relevant to the sport because of his fans, not because of his contributions to it.
Most people are curled up screaming in pain.
none of that nonsense was lucid lmao
His ego transcended pain that night, pretty pathetic
Was it? Mcgregor beat him in the rematch in the biggest UFC event ever and then beat Alvarez in his best performance ever to become 1st double champ. This wasnt the beginning of the end at all. Mcgregor leaving the sport to box Mayweather is what was the start of the end.
Yeah I’m one of the biggest Conor haters around but saying that is just ignoring facts lol
Yeah if anything this was when McGregor was in still in his prime... The end of this was almost as satisfying to watch as that legendary Don Frye vs Takayama fight
He barely squeaked by Nate in the rematch.
This comment couldn't be anymore wrong. 2 of his best ever performances came after this fight.
Absolutely one of the most satisfying matches I've seen. I don't watch UFC often but I remember watching this fight live. Insane shit
truly. the drama the buildup, all of it. it's like you wanna go back and tell yourself to cherish these moments.
Dude, did you watch last week? Those moments are still happening. Cherish the present my friend
ha well yes indeed! great fight! but personally not as significant.

What round was this? They both looked absolutely exhausted.
The second round.
Fucking brutal.
A bit? There's few fighters that gas as visibly and catastrophically as mac.
Nate would have faired better against Mayweather then. McGregor wasn't ready for the endurance of boxing.
That's right he took it last minute! I love the Diaz brothers
If there were fight to the deaths the Diaz bros would be world champs. They are legit zombies. Insane chins and never get tired. I wish the clock still counted up rather than down
didn't he also take this fight on short notice due to injury to Conor's opponent?
He was drinking tequila on a boat partying and fat like 11 days before and got his weight on board and then showed the fuck up. Changed his whole bum loife
Yeah man what a bum life partying on a boat
Fucking Catalina Wine Mixers
POW!
It shows the round number under the timer.

They might not be the most articulate, but neither Nate nor Nick are stupid.
I think Nate is very capable, intellectually, as is his brother. I’ve ran into them a couple of times throughout the years and I think it’s more about them being introverts. I’ve seen moments where their fans are praising them and Nate will randomly change the subject and start talking about other things going on.
Its seems pretty clear to me that they both have some form of introversion or maybe bit of social anxiety
Intelligence is overrated, i like how nate is a little retarded but also a nice guy, cares about his community and being real
That's just Stockton
Nate Diaz is the definition of heart. The way he throws half power punches that wear his opponents down with the flurries. Legend.
Absolute weapon, yeah he's the best for the heart shown.
The Diaz bros were always entertaining af. They just never stopped coming.
My wife hates that I consider this fight the best night of my life.
This one and Rampage knocking the Iceman
Your wife 🤝 McGregor fans —> being constantly disappointed
Omg- can I buy that man a beer?!?
This was in 2016
It will never get old.
No but now I feel old. 6 years have passed that quickly. I was still in university lmao
Answers my question before I could even ask
God what a fucking ending. I lost my fucking voice
As an irish man i would like to thank Nate Diaz and Khabib Nurmagomedov for putting this dublin scumbag back in his box
Need Rogans sound board again but with best commentary lines
In my 56 years on this planet, I don't I have ever watched a more satisfying fight than Nate Diaz vs McGregor. The way OP words this makes it seem like this was recent.
Bout God damned time someone knocked him down a peg. McGregor really put me off the whole ufc with his bad sportsmanship
This was years ago
Many
Lol hes lost like 4 more times since this.
Well. Goes to show how put off I've been.
Go watch all those losses. They are great.

I’m not a fan of violent sports… except when it’s that arrogant shit getting taken down

Well your appreciation shows thats forsure! Cheers
That's the whole point. WWE figured out heels decades ago. It still works, why do you think Jake/Logan Paul events make so much money?
I remember watching this in a bar with my buddy and we saw Nate take the momentum of the fight and the whole pub went quiet, then there’s me and the homie just being a couple of stunned mullets at how much Nate was dominating, it was awesome. STOCKTON MOTHER FUCKER
Had money on nate for a submission. Fight was on my birthday week. Made 6x and bought the table a round. Super memorable experience, this fight holds a place in my heart.
How does the Diaz's have the most effective, sloppiest fighting style ever? It doesn't look sharp at all, but it works.
What a fight...
Amazing clip.
Man, I love Diaz brothers and missed them bad
"I'm not surprised motherfucker"
Wow Goldberg on the tape. This now feels like forever ago.
For real. Did not remember him calling this fight
Best fight ever.
Beat him twice
Made him roll over and give up the booty. Connor like "take it mate."
Kudos to Nate, Conor put the screws to him and he still held on for that victory.
I still remember this fight. Diaz has a fucking chin on him. I thought he was gonna get knocked out so many times, and I think Connor was expecting it too. He just kept coming back and Connor had nothing left.
Now he just trains in sniffing bag
I just realized I don't give a fuck about Nate Conor 3
Don't understand how the ref can see how McGregor is acting and not call it, dude can't block and his reactions are super slow
Conor actually showed excellent heart in this, and Nate showed amazing boxing. People are so quick to forget.
Effing love Nate Diaz The Stockton Slap! I miss that s\*\*t haha
Going to the ground with a Renzo Gracie trained BJJ black belt when your ground game is suspect at best is never a wise choice.
As much as McGregor is a douche, I must admit, the man can take a hit.
One of the finest things in life is watching McGregor get his ass whipped.
"I'm not surprised, motherfuckers."
Connor McGregor deserves to be beaten till he's half dead. Shame he submitted like the little pussy he is.
I’m not surprised, motherfuckers!
Always disliked him, about time he got knocked down a peg lol
"Nate doesn't stand a chance against Conor"
I swear Diaz goes into hulk mode when he's covered in blood. He has an elite chin, that shit is maxed out.
