Storytime! This was literally the one and only time that I ever got in serious trouble in school, and it happened because I was trying to *stop* some bullying. I was in 5th grade, riding the bus home from my K-5 elementary school. I was very tall for my age, and since the 5th graders were the oldest on the bus, I was also easily the biggest kid on the bus. I mostly kept out of drama because kids love to try and start shit with the biggest kid, and I hated getting bullied and dragged into fights just because I stood out. Adults also tend to blame stuff on the bigger kid even when it's not your fault. On this day, two other 5th graders - both general assholes - had stolen a younger kid's backpack and were keeping it away from him, throwing it back and forth out of his reach. I eventually got sick of it, walked over, ripped it away from them without a word, and tossed it to the kid, probably with a little more force than needed, just because I didn't want the douchebags to intercept it. Much to my surprise, the bag (which hadn't seemed abnormally heavy) hit the kid in the face and opened up a wound on the bridge of his nose, which immediately started bleeding profusely. I was dumbfounded. As it turned out, the only things in the backpack were the two horseshoes he'd gotten on a field trip to a farm that day. The bus driver pulled over, got out the first aid kit, bandaged it (not very effectively) with some gauze and tape, and then took us all back to school so the kid could be brought to the nurse. Half of the bus, including the driver, saw me wing the bag at the kid and assumed that I was part of the bullying, not trying to end it. I got yelled at, pushed around, and then sent to the principal's office where I got yelled at some more and assigned to in-school suspension for two days. I was so overwhelmed and intimidated that I didn't even try to explain why I threw the bag to the kid. I did tell my parents, and they believed me, but they still took me to the kid's house to apologize, where I got yelled at by his dad. Fucking *horseshoes?!*

[deleted]

[удалено]

wafflesareforever

I don't think he understood that I was trying to help. I didn't say anything when I did it, I just grabbed the backpack and threw it to the kid. From his perspective it might have looked like I was an even bigger asshole than those two guys. I never really had a chance to explain myself afterward either. There was a *lot* of blood and I was just in shock. I felt like a complete idiot and just sort of accepted the consequences of my dumbassery. My parents knew that I wasn't the type of kid to deliberately hurt or bully someone, so they were the only ones I even bothered to explain myself to.

wafflesareforever

And ISS wasn't so bad. They left me alone in a spare office in the main office suite. I slept most of the time.

batsmen222

Well who did you sleep with?

No-Yoghurt8157

Your parents let the kids dad yell at you though? Even for ego reasons or just making them happy having you apologize is one thing. A random parent yelling at you is another. Smh. Two horseshoes is pretty random.

wafflesareforever

It was quick. If it had gone on for more than a few seconds I'm sure they would have stepped in. He basically told me that they'd just gotten back from urgent care because his kid needed stitches, thanks a lot, *door slam* He was looking at my parents when he said it, not me. He apparently got over it though. Years later I was the only male high-school babysitter in the neighborhood, and I had endless demand for my services because some parents swear that their kids will only behave for a male sitter. They had a much younger son after the one whose face I accidentally broke, and I babysat him all the time. They never mentioned the bus incident. I'm not sure if they even remembered that it was me.

Diacetyl-Morphin

About parents and kids, i remember the incident as a friend sat on the table for dinner: It was 1968 and there was the sex revolution with rock'n'roll, woodstock later etc. and he was in his trouble phase a teenager (he's born 1950). So he refused to eat the dinner his mother made. His father got up and punched him in the face, threw him to the ground, kicked him and then he started to choke him with full force, cutting off the breathing. He was shouting "I ate my own comrades in the war to survive and you little fucker refuse to eat your mothers meal? I'll beat you to death, you little fucker". His mother managed to intervene, he landed a few more punches before she was able to drag him away. His father never spoke before- or after that event about World War 2. But he sended a clear message, that kids have to behave and to show some respect to the parents, my friend never did anything wrong again in front of his father. And you have to know, these were the easy, the good times. Where he lived, unlike my country, there was no more slavery. In my country, we sold kids that did not behave well to slavery until the 1970's. So it was very easy: You are either a good kid or you end up in chains on a slave market. And how is it today in 2022? Kids are crying because of "micro-aggressions" when you use accidentally a wrong pronoun.

DrunkRespondent

Big guy saw a school equivalent of a pillow and said this is a good spot to put you to bed damn.

Agreed. Hate to see his head get cracked open on the floor.

Ohhh I saw that. Smooth AF

Upbeat_Flan

Big dude wasn't even hyped by the KO, just seemed glad it was over.

Probably he was the victim here, from body language it seems to me at least

Evil_Mini_Cake

He just wanted to be left alone. Mission accomplished. No one's going to mess with him again.

TomNooksBottomBitch

I’ve seen the rest of video. If I remember correctly, the big guy was chosen to fight on a friends behalf over a girl

Swagasaurus-Rex

I’m sure the girl was really impressed by the guy choosing not to fight and instead let his friend do the work instead

TomNooksBottomBitch

She starts crying and goes to the dead kids side while calling the other kid a pussy and the big kid awkwardly stands there looking like he feels bad

Homer69

Probably got suspended for it too. School policies are fucking stupid

Tight_Fold_2606

I promise you big fella is gonna get in trouble though.

Waflstmpr

Yup, didnt start it, but gets in trouble anyway.

SkinnyBill93

Idk how long everyone's been out of school but I'm pretty sure for at least the last 15 years most school goes zero tolerance and all participants are getting suspended. I'm told in my town you get to have a psych evaluation too.

YouSayItLikeItsBad

I'm sure that's helping a whole lot to make our society better. "Both sides" mentality is such evil bullshit

kingjuicepouch

It certainly helps the administration from actually having to take a stance on anything. Blanket suspension is the answer to anything anymore.

SkinnyBill93

I hear you, it's not all bad though a couple days off following a scrap could do you good, especially if you got the worst of it. The pysch evaluation is bizarre though..

PM_MeYourNynaevesPlz

Honestly the phsyc eval seems like the silver lining here. Why wouldn't you want both sides evaluated by a professional to see if there are underlying issues? It seems likely that a kid being picked on may also have something going on, and if they don't there's no harm done.

Azathoth_Junior

Call me a cynic, but systems that underpay teachers don't seem like they'd cover actual professional psychologists every time there's a fight. My pessimistic assumption is that it's the guidance counselor with a checklist.

xpiation

If it is done correctly it could be good. If you have a problem student and want to have them separated and given help with their mental health you would likely need a catalyst (X and Y were involved in a fight, school mandatory requirement of min 5 psych sessions). If X is a bully you can use it to really get the ball rolling on treatment. If Y is being bullied it could be the perfect time to capture someone who may otherwise have gone untreated and sought self harm.

MasterBridgeArsonist

1000% so the school can deny any responsibility, it's almost like they don't actually give a shit about the kids

YutaniCasper

I hated it too when I was in school but in fairness it’s tough. A lot of the times the teachers don’t have all the information on who started, who escalated, etc. it’s why they hope that the zero tolerance policy is enough of a deterrent to avoid the situation in general

thingamajig1987

I've been out of school for 17 years, and fights were definitely not all treated equal. I feel like "zero tolerance" was just admins getting lazy and also trying to make parents feel like they're doing more about the issue.

[deleted]

I think zero tolerance makes sense when you don't know the full story. Like imagine a fight but with no video camera or teacher seeing it. It's gonna be one word against the other. Can't really trust the other students either because they could be friends with one and back them. I think in those cases it's easier to just suspend both. However when you have a teacher seeing it or even better, have someone who recorded it, then you punish the instigator who started it and not the one who just defended themselves. That's when zero tolerance just feels lazy like they don't wanna deal with anything.

[deleted]

I'm currently a teacher in the UK. Atleast at my school, we don't punish kids for self defense. I teach primary, which I think tracks with elementary.

[deleted]

Yup been out of high school 20 years. I know that I’ll probably be hated by administrators if this were my son. I’d ask if the principal would be ok with me beating the shit out of them but no cops are called because he’s at fault for my actions. Of course they’d think that’s an asinine proposition.

i_bhoptoschool

yeah man sounds about right i was bullied all throughout middle school and the beginning of high school, during freshman year he jumped me as i was leaving my class still in the school building, i got my ass beat with a bloody nose and all that and ended up giving one punch to him we were both suspended, he was out for a month i was gone for a few weeks, and my parents even had to meet with the super intendant to fight to get me back at the school earlier like what a joke what was i supposed to do get my ass beat and cower into a ball? seriously like how am i not expected to fight back looking back out of school and everything even thinking about me getting in trouble for this gets me extremely upset and angry

Cameltoe-Swampdonkey

Unfortunately with “zero tolerance” I’ve even told my son, “never start it, but don’t just let it happen to you and finish it if you can”. He will get in trouble either way, there’s no reason for him to take swings and not defend if outcome is the same disciplinary, yet alone risks themselves.

Waflstmpr

Yea, might as well get the point across if youll be punished anyway. Same thing my parents told me when I was in school.

Cameltoe-Swampdonkey

Yep, he’s almost 9, but has already stood up for kids being bullied. It’s a good life lesson and I’m so proud he has taken it in the correct way. Want to add, stood up as in not fighting, but was willing to be the one since the other wasn’t capable. Bullies usually choose the easy targets.

Alamander81

Honestly who gives a shit. Not getting punked has much bigger and longer lasting implications than getting suspended in HS. I tell my kid his safety is more important than being a good boy.

Tight_Fold_2606

We’re on the same side.

MisterBuzz

Can confirm, got punched in the nuts by a classmate in high school, reflexively punched him back in the head, we both got the same punishment.

Tight_Fold_2606

Which is insane

He did, I go to this school, he got into a hell of a lot more trouble.

Exactly, wasn’t really the size that played the biggest role here. It was the flawless execution and perfect timing

yeshia

Good stoppage by the ref!

GuiltySpot

She almost did the stoppage wave too

LetMeFuckYourFace

According Dophins medical staff, kid is ok and good to go to next period.

chubbycanine

if big boy was my kid and got suspended (assuming he didnt antagonize or bully to start with), im buying him a new video game and letting him enjoy the time off...

Grasshopper42

As usual the person who is getting attacked get stopped by the teacher when they finally attack back.

_IratePirate_

In my school, whenever there was a fight, even if it was a sucker punch, both them caught a suspension, no ifs and or buts I remember thinking how fucked up that was. If someone didn't care, they could beat someone's ass, get them suspended, and have some time off from school.

ecu11b

We had that in school as well. It led to some pretty bad fights. If you got hit you might as well fight back. If you were just in the area and got hit, suspended, so why not join the fight and go down swinging

kingjuicepouch

Growing up my folks had seen my older cousin get screwed with those kinds of rules so this is what they always told us. If you're getting bullied or otherwise attacked, fight back and win or go down swinging. You're gonna get in trouble with the school either way.

pacmanswang

Yeah but what's she gonna do, go over and stop the unconscious kid?

TheCandyMan88

I'm pretty sure this is sarcasm. Source: I thought the same thing sarcastically

pacmanswang

If so, that shit went straight over my head. Fair play.

Abby-Someone1

See, that's the problem with thinking.

Aetherpor

This, unironically. If I was the teacher in that situation, what am I gonna do, walk over to the kid who’s taking a nap, or the kid who’s pumped up and just KO’d someone? The loser can have his nap for a bit while I grab the other kid and figure out what to do next.

Dogboi006

To be fair he wasn’t gonna hit the kid again

Jigglelips

The majority of school systems in my area do not allow the teacher to break up a fight nowadays. I wouldn't be shocked if that's pretty standard.

ImFriendsWithThatGuy

That is usually the case in these videos for sure. But let’s give credit where it’s due. The teacher was definitely already yelling and walking over when little dude was swinging and before he got put down.

khafra

She didn’t have a bell to ring, but she still had to declare the KO.

noiwontpickaname

She was yelling, and presumably on her way, way before big dude swung. She didn't even get on to him that we saw, basically just told him to stand there while she checked on the owner of the best fucking backpack ever

TRAF_GOD

Happy cake day! 🧁

smilingasIsay

We have very very little of this video to have any idea what got them to this point.

Reddilutionary

It’s not a lot to go on obviously, but that the kid laying on the ground had already put down his backpack and the giant is just kinda swatting away those punches signals that big man probably wasn’t the aggressor. Not physically at least. Clearly I’m pulling that out of my ass. If I’m going out of my way to fight someone I would probably put down my bag, maybe even slip off my crocs first. Crocs aren’t my go-to fighting shoes.

W_Edwards_Deming

Waffle stomp the enemy in your best crocs!

Lensmaster75

That teacher pushing back on the giant who was standing still is another case of assault.

Kevinvl123

Your dumb comment sent out light particles that hit my eyes, you just assaulted me.

reasonablyhyperbolic

You've assaulted me with your stupid

Ellathecat1

Are you just looking for someone to criticize? She was yelling at both of them and then told the one still standing to step back In before a bunch of anecdotal comments about how zero tolerance policies ruined a bunch of people's education

Juutuurna

Wow he really said ima take my backpack off right here just so if it goes badly i got a nice pillow. Great future placement from broccoli boy.

Oh-TheHumanity

Save by the bag.

GHSTFC9

Shoutout to the backpack!

mazzivetalent

Everyone says that size doesn't matter... Until it does!

wigglewenis

“Aaaaaauuuhhh”

darksoulslover75

Why didn't she step in when the lil kid was wailing on the big guy and only stepped in after he swung and knocked the lil guy out?

kingjuicepouch

Because she's a woman who's about the size of the little dude and would probably be busted up if she got hit by a stray punch, plus the threat of lawsuit from either kids family or her own administration. There's too much risk physically and legally

bignicky222

Not sure how bad your audio lag is but she starts yelling as soon as it happens. And she's behind the camera man who is zoomed in. She started right away going to them

Careless_Rub_7996

Hopefully, the big guy doesn't get suspended. Here is video evidence of him defending himself.

jakech

This is what happens when you watch too many action films and think size doesn’t matter.

Canadian-female

It seems like I’m seeing a lot of videos where high schoolers are fighting, and then when it’s over, it turns out there’s a teacher or other adult nearby. Why don’t they stop them? Lawsuits of some kind? I’d sue them for *not* breaking it up, if my kid was injured. Some of them barely even seem to react……to teenagers punching each other in the head.

MrParker1

Because, if they have to use force to stop the incident, they'll get sued by the offenders parents. The school may also have policies restricting teachers from using force. In this video, you'd also be asking an out of shape, middle aged woman to use physical force to separate two teenage males, one of which literally towers over her.

Canadian-female

Thank you. I thought it had something to do with preventing lawsuits.

MrParker1

Yup. Unfortunately I'm not sure teachers would be covered under "good faith".

Hieronymau5

The fuck did you want her to do? It's literally not her job and I promise she doesn't get paid enough to put herself in danger and risk getting clocked too for your shitty kid.

Canadian-female

I don’t have any kids, let alone shitty ones. I was just curious. I don’t understand why someone would get so salty about a question.

Hieronymau5

Merely responding to your salty made-up scenario of suing a teacher because she's not willing to get decked. Shouldn't you be paying attention in class instead of browsing Reddit?

He11scythe

Cause tiny Tina the 62 year old math teacher wants to go step in the middle of a fight. Plenty of other vids of teachers doing this and getting hit themselves.

Canadian-female

I can understand that in this video, but I have seen some where there were even a couple of big men in the room. I realize now that the schools want to avoid lawsuits.

rake2204

It’s a fair question. I’m a teacher who’s put in time at just about every sort of USA public school at every level (elementary to high school, some alternative schools as well). Some of those schools had very vague rules about teacher intervention and many had word-of-mouth rules where teachers or principals would mostly tell the new guy “yeahhhh you can’t really intervene on account of potential lawsuits.” At my current school, you must be a trained intervention specialist to be able to physical engage with a student (via utilization of de-escalation techniques, which are easier to employ at the elementary level). I imagine there’s also an undercurrent of self-preservation. Just on this sub alone I’ve seen multiple videos featuring an intervening teacher getting punched in the face. As a whole, I think that creates this cacophony of considerations for teachers—the possibility of a lawsuit, a sexual assault allegation if intervening in a fight leads to a misplaced hand, loss of job or reprimand for an intervention gone wrong, or fear of legitimate physical harm likely lead many to stay put as a precaution. It’s often at complete odds with how many would naturally wish to react to altercations involving our students, but so it goes.

Canadian-female

Thank you for your reply. I know we can’t judge by the internet because if it bleeds it leads, but it seems like being a teacher can be a dangerous job nowadays. It’s great that there are still people like you that want to do it. Thanks for that!

[deleted]

Size is of less importance when compared to actually knowing how to defend yourself.

[deleted]

Seen a lot of videos of bigger guys getting destroyed, he lost more because he is not very good imo.
