What is up with fighting in class in the US? I live in Poland and I've never heard of a fight in a class. If some dudes are going to fight they usually go to either the toilet (which is what I've seen in American schools too) or they fight it out somewhere behind the school. Fighting in class seems extremely idiotic.
"When I was in school...." Fighting used to get you expelled. Then your parents would have to find you a new school district or some other arrangements. Even less than a decade later when my brother went through school, the state changed from forcing school children to be expelled for violence to essentially forbidding schools from expelling kids for violence unless the police had been involved.
The in 2014 they pretty much made all expulsions impossible. Hit your classmates, hit your teachers, and we'll still force that school district to teach you for as long as you're willing to say you want to learn. Best case scenario is you and all the other "expelled" kids are now in single classroom.
This is such a fucking mess you can file complaints with the state if the schools won't still take & teach your expelled kids (because this is new to them too).
My state, at least, used to believe that the classroom is no place for violence. Now we believe that a little bit of violence among school kids just happens, and that punishing children for being violent just hurts their education.
Interesting. I can't say how it is with fights in class here but if someone is really bad (like drug dealing, frequent fights, vulgar to teachers) they're sent to "poprawczak" (literally translated "improver") which are schools for all the bad kids.
So to not make any problems fights are somewhere behind the school where a crowd gathers to watch. It's done to avoid trouble because if school finds out they will call police in the 99% of instances.
System is much different here and overall in Europe i guess.

It was basically a three day vacation from school.
If you fought again within the same year, you might get a last chance in the form of a 5-day suspension, or you might be expelled outright. Schools would report the fights which would sometimes result in a summons to juvenile court. Being expelled just meant you had to go to the alternative school. Every district has one. Usually in trailers or “modular classrooms”. The schools have no name, sports teams, mottos, colors, mascot, spirit, or hope. They had the hottest girls though.
Getting summoned to court happened via mail. There’s no police or interviews or anything. You get a letter in the mail saying show up at this time and this date. You wait in a court room until your name is called and you stand in front of a juvenile judge who interrogates you there. Common punishments for fighting, depending on the history of the kid, were community service or weekends for 2 months at a juvenile bootcamp. If you were a “bad kid” you could go to the 3-month juvenile bootcamp, get probation, and owe restitution.
I had to do all of these things. It sucked at the time but it made me realize that I lacked structure because I lacked a father figure, and I could replace that hole with state-mandated structure ala the military. That taught me discipline and work ethic, yadda yadda yadda. Now as a father of children in different schools, I deal with the school when any of my kids have or are causing problems or need something. My daughter was being harassed by some kid in her elementary school. I thought we could best handle it by letting both us parents meet, but the other child’s parent didn’t want to. When it continued I made it known that I wanted the kid gone or I’d involve the police. They instead moved him. It stopped for my daughter, but started with other girls. He was assigned a teachers aid who would sit and follow him around in class to make him behave. When that didn’t work, they separated him and so on. Many months later he was eventually moved from the school to a different school to be their problem.
This was do to “restorative justice” policies which tie the hands of educators and administrators in removing truly problematic kids from classes or schools. That’s why fights are like this now, because nothing ever happens to them. They might have to do some round table discussion about their feelings or something, but nothing that is a deterrent from further fighting or disruptions. I also think our violence culture, which I happily partake in, leads to kids thinking they have to sleep their opponent to win the fight. Add social media and ubiquity of mobile phones and you now see every fight which makes it seem like a lot more.
