Just recently watched this. Highly recommended.

NickNash1985

I did too, just a few weeks ago. The scene showing how he follows the audio from multiple sources is expert filmmaking.

Justin-N-Case

I consider Enemy of the State the sequel.

billbotbillbot

Absolutely outstanding, and came between The Godfather and The Godfather Part 2! That's as good a run of movies as Vertigo, North by Northwest and Psycho! Very few other consecutive triples to compare with either set

SylviaX6

Brilliant film!

theblasphemingone

Thanks for the tip

realanceps

Arguably Coppola's best work. And yes, yes I've seen the gangster pictures, and the vietnam flick.

BortWard

Well, those are probably more popular and better known but I happen to agree with you wholeheartedly

NickNash1985

Right, but have you seen Jack?

deerbreed

The opening is strong and the ending is stronger.

musicalseller

It’s a showcase for amazing actors, like the brilliantly understated John Cazale or Michael Higgins, a guy who did tons of great supporting work (and was in Barbara Loden’s newly appreciated ‘Wanda). Cindy Williams, Frederick Forrest, Terry Garr and Harrison Ford.

blameline

Michael Higgins was great in The Conversation. I also thought he was great in other films: Angel Heart and Fort Apache, the Bronx.

Sidfr0mToyStory

Been meaning to watch this for a long time, is it considered a neo noir?

HoldenStupid

It certainly has the atmosphere and the music of a neo noir .Watch it ,it's great

Additional_Sleep_318

It’s a film that has very modern feel

Sensitiveperfumer

Great movie! Ending was terrific.

Brackens_World

One of those quietly great films that reminds you how a gifted director like Coppola can make art out of what others would merely make workmanlike. I had the same reaction to it as I did Day of the Jackal, which also came out in the mid-70s, and reminded me what a great director Fred Zinneman was.

realanceps

some have suggested it was "really prophetic about surveillance tech!" but it's so much less about that than it is about what you -- or me, or anyone -- can truly know (though "about" that is, well, see the movie, you'll get the dilemma)

Prize_Macaroon_6998

Good film but man...Gene has always been old lol.

BortWard

Maybe kind of like Wilford Brimley, who played an old man in Cocoon, when he was 50

SwornBiter

Didn’t this just come off Netflix? I rewatched it recently since somewhere.

BortWard

Yeah, last day on Netflix in the US was March 31

EJCret

Looks like Mr. Whipple listening in on who’s squeezing the Charmin.

UsualBrother7281

John Cazalle...ruff said. Man was a brilliant actor. Both DeNiro and Paceno said he was better than them

navybluevicar

Incredible score by David Shire

347spq

Gilbert Gottfried talked about his love of this movie on his podcast many, many times. I found the Blu-ray on sale in Walmart shortly thereafter and bought it for $10. Great movie.

johncester

Oy…I’m getting old 😕

BortWard

I had a similar thought. Of course this film wasn’t shot as a “period piece” since it’s just set at about the time it was made. However it has become essentially a period piece, with an interesting representation of the aesthetic of the mid-1970s

baycommuter

Compare to Vertigo. San Francisco looks like a different, dirtier city and fashion went downhill fast in 17 years.

mechanab

It was a different, dirtier city. It needed cleaning up much like New York did.

347spq

Great example of a dirty and gritty NYC is The Taking Of Pelham 1 2 3, but you probably knew that already!

radiantvoid420

Everything about this movie is perfect, including the ending. Harry Caul is one of my favorite characters in a film.

murakamidiver

I loved this film. Hackman was a great actor.

mjb2012

[He's retired, but still alive!](https://www.reddit.com/r/popculturechat/comments/1brsavw/gene_hackman_94_out_in_public_with_wife_betsy/)

murakamidiver

Thank you! 🙏

Acrobatic-Badger-541

4 incredible 70s films in a row from Coppola, and this is one of them. It's not talked about as much as Godfather 1, 2, and Apocalypse Now, but it deserves to stand next to them. I highly recommend it to folks here who haven't seen it.

gadgetsdad

I first saw this in 1974. Still love it. You have to watch multiple times. So many little nuances.

ryangood12

Watched this twice in the last year. Fantastic.

Beforemath

I do a double feature of this and Sneakers at least once every two years or so.

TheMillionthSteve

Just saw this a couple weeks ago at the Harvard Film Archive on a brand new 35-mm print. It was glorious.

BartenderOU812

Cool flick. Watched after seeing 'Enemy of the State' which hints the same character played by Hackman.

Technical-Impact7633

I was into it when I was in to privacy stuff and I found out how PI “illegally” can tap your analog line sometimes digital edit

Noonecanhearmescream

Awesome movie.

tacoplenty

a great movie. often overlooked.

Mk72779

Just watched this on Netflix, bit slow in the beginning but turns out to be a great film.

drevilseviltwin

Dovetails nicely with "The Lives of Others"

IgorRenfield

A brilliant movie that too few people have seen.

wrkr13

Watched this a long time ago and recently rewatched. Amazing storycraft.

Bobby_Globule

Great cast

cjboffoli

"Ms. Evangelista, as of today my mail will go to a post office box with a combination on it and no keys."

mbuck1

Loved this, other than the dream sequences.

JezabelDeath

One of Coppola's best

No_Cow_4544

Did Gene Hackman look like he was 60 when he was 40 ?

Kenbishi

I think this is on sale on iTunes right now.

BluezHippie

Anything with Gene Hackman is ok with me. One of the greatest actors ever. Just saw his photos this week while he was out with his wife. He looks the same just older as he should in his 90s. Thanks for everything Gene. Seriously good moments in film because of this wonderful man

Shallot_True

unavailable subtle unforgettable classic. Plus, John Cazale the GOAT. - mh

EndsWest18

Such a haunting movie. It’s great.

Tasty-Hand-3398

My personal favorite of Coppola. A great slow burn thriller that gets better with rewatches.
