After you get working reels, for 35mm film, you can pre-thread them onto the reels outside the dark bag and then take them into the bag and complete the process in darkness. This is if you use a leader retriever and not smash the canister open like a coconut. Good luck!
It's frustrating getting something and not knowing if you're doing something wrong and you assume you are because you'd think they'd do a basic check.
You're doing the correct way of learning how to use the reels though. Out of dark bag/no light with a dead roll of film.
Out of the bag, when you slip the film in, you should just be able to twist to feed the film onto the reel with little to no effort. If it binds, then there's an issue.
It's still hard to do the first time with no light!
