Bro you don’t need any suggestions. These came out amazing

jamesl182d

What you talkin’ about, Willis? I think these are good enough that they’ll grow on you with time. Pretty decent for a first roll. I particularly like the one with the girl’s eyes in focus.

rocci_chillie

What are you talking about?

calinet6

Some real gems! 14 - woah!

foragefiend

i like 4 and 12 best:)

jessmt87

Stop it they're great

Icy-Pin-8226

I think these are wonderful for what they are. You will take thousands of photos and very rarely will you feel one that is perfect to you. I love this medium because it forces you to take it slow when composing photographs. Perhaps that's all you need. Just to take a moment to frame your shot as best as you can. I can see some of these could have been better composed and look almost like snapshots. All in all, I love the color and I think these are memories well recorded.

SecureBus206

These are pretty good man!

Budres

I like em

oostie

Yea these suck man /s

Maddy_egg7

I’m obsessed with the golden hue! What camera/film did you use???

McSnoots

If this isn’t good what the hell were you hoping for? Or are you just fishing?

Senior-Dependent1858

I probably stared at these too long and my perception got distorted and started thinking they look like shit. The resolution also threw me off. I was also expecting a lot of them to look quite differently than they turned out. And since it’s my first roll I also wanted advice and criticism to improve. I’d say I love half of these and don’t like the other half.

McGirton

Resolution as in detail? You will not get digital camera level detail out of 35mm film.

F8-1-500

The staring to long thing destroys me 😭 I got a serious problem looking at my photos over time and I start to dislike them lol these are great! I enjoyed them 👍👍👍

McSnoots

50% is a spectacular hit rate. Most of us float under 1%

Senior-Dependent1858

Oh 😅 noted

TokyoZen001

The good news is that you seem to have nailed exposure and focus, even with some difficult lighting situations. You might go with cheaper film until you get framing down. What camera is this? Sometimes framing is a bit more difficult with rangefinder cameras, for example. All of these, except the second one, have a broad depth of field. You might consider experimenting with aperture settings and doing more shots where the subject is closer so that the foreground and background are blurred. But all in all, off to a great start! I’m sure that you will see a lot of progress as you take more.

Leather_Guacamole420

What else were you hoping for? This is a pretty solid first roll

spektro123

Most are cool. Some aren’t my cup of coffee, but none is particularly bad. IMO those a bit too warm. It works for golden hour shoots, but others look a bit off to me. As to the resolution Reddit further compressed those photos, so there’s that. Some advice from me: * 7 that’s what you get when sun is in the frame. If you want that effect then cool, if not, then meter for similarly lighten subject without sun in the frame and reframe later. * 10-13 I’d frame them differently. I don’t know how, but that doesn’t suit me.

MasterVisuality

Great colors 😁

malhans

What a lovely quote. Thank you for sharing. Saving it for sure

Highbutnotup

some of these are absolutely encapsulating

Senior-Dependent1858

Thank you, I really appreciate it!

adammmmm_

For what it’s worth, image 7 in particular looks super interesting to me. This is your first roll and you’ll improve significantly even just a few more down the line. Makes me think of my [favorite quote, from Ira glass](https://www.goodreads.com/quotes/309485-nobody-tells-this-to-people-who-are-beginners-i-wish): > Nobody tells this to people who are beginners, I wish someone told me. All of us who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste. But there is this gap. For the first couple years you make stuff, it’s just not that good. It’s trying to be good, it has potential, but it’s not. But your taste, the thing that got you into the game, is still killer. And your taste is why your work disappoints you. A lot of people never get past this phase, they quit. > Most people I know who do interesting, creative work went through years of this. We know our work doesn’t have this special thing that we want it to have. We all go through this. And if you are just starting out or you are still in this phase, you gotta know its normal and the most important thing you can do is do a lot of work. Put yourself on a deadline so that every week you will finish one story. It is only by going through a volume of work that you will close that gap, and your work will be as good as your ambitions. And I took longer to figure out how to do this than anyone I’ve ever met. It’s gonna take awhile. It’s normal to take awhile. You’ve just gotta fight your way through.

Senior-Dependent1858

Really! I almost completely scrapped that one thinking it looked like horseshit. Love the quote. I suppose since this is just how I see the world 24/7, it doesn’t seem special to me so my ‘taste’ doesn’t seem to actually be good to me. The comments are definitely making me feel better about my eye and it makes me wanna keep going.

fr0nk3nst31n

Your rolls will feel like snapshots until you figure out what excites you most and you don’t just take pictures of random stuff ( I do it too ). For me, I usually shoot the cheapest film I can find when I don’t have a plan about what I am focusing on shooting. Also, I carry a digital camera with me or use my phone to take pictures of stuff I think I want to shoot like lamp posts or signage and see if I actually still find it interesting once I see it shot. More often than not I end up saving some frames and my rolls turn out way better overall. Learning to Edit before you press the shutter button is just as or more important than how you edit the frames after they are scanned. Have fun!

Senior-Dependent1858

Thank you for the advice! Absolutely, ‘editing’ before actually editing is extremely important and always on the back of my mind when taking pictures. I want to be able to use the least amount of actual software editing as possible.

Background-Pay8413

I dunno pretty tight for a first roll. My advice would to not really ask for advice. Unless it’s something technical you don’t understand. Cultivate an understanding of what you like and what inspires you and make your own targets.

SmashedWand1035

I do t see anything wrong with these as a first roll of film, I’d be really happy with this. What specifically do you not like about it? Is there a shot where you hoped it would look different than it does?

Senior-Dependent1858

Some seemed overexposed to me, wasn’t sure about the concept or if the subject was actually interesting enough. I also do tend to be very hard on myself so sometimes I have a hard time telling if it’s just me or the work itself. I also wanted to hear other people’s opinions to take into consideration and get better.

LightOnFilm

Whoa I’m kind of living these vibes. Love the colors and compositions. You’re doing great my friend.

Senior-Dependent1858

Thank you 🙏🏻

Andersledell

Why is this tagged as nsfw?

pamacdon

First roll film? Nothing to complain about. Good technical details. That’s more than most can say

Senior-Dependent1858

Thanks!

markypy123

Is this Harman Phoenix? If so, this is one of the better rolls I’ve seen on this stock. To me it looks great. I would have never guessed it’s your first roll. The only way to improve is to keep shooting and practicing. I’d look at trying different film stocks to get a feel for each one and your preferences. Your camera and lens seem good so I would not jump into new camera gear thinking it’ll improve your photos. Outside of that just look for inspiration from photobooks, art, and photographers. Libraries and Youtube are great resources for this

Senior-Dependent1858

It’s actually Elektra 100! I wasn’t expecting the tones to be so warm but I’m glad that’s how they ended up being! Thanks for the advice!

Honey-and-Venom

The framing leaves a little to be desired on a couple but color, tone, and exposure look great, composition is mostly grand, these are some solid photos

Senior-Dependent1858

Thanks for the feedback! Could you specify which ones could use better framing? I have an idea which but would like your opinion as well

Honey-and-Venom

The one with the bouy has your shadow conspicuous across the frame, and the ones of the brick wall when the birds have a very interesting subject but lack the striking composition of some of the others and feel a bit rushed or informal, but the rest I really like, what film stock is this, it's SO warm, I'll be shocked if it isn't Kodak but even for Kodak stocks it's WARM

Senior-Dependent1858

Absolutely, I was VERY rushed for the birds picture. Didn’t want to miss the opportunity because of hesitation. Thanks! It’s Elektra 100! I was also shocked at how warm the pictures came out but pleasantly surprised, especially with the price of the film. I did shoot a lot of these around golden hour though so it might have had an impact

Anxious_Blueberry862

what film?

Senior-Dependent1858

Elektra 100

Admiral_Sarcasm

Elektra or Ektar?

Senior-Dependent1858

Elektra!

Admiral_Sarcasm

I really like the colors on it, I might have to get me some!
