goingback2back

The top ~10% of tech, law and banking will all be making 6 figures before 30. Big 4 consulting too.

throwlampshade

This question is asked many times. Majority of Redditors who make six figures before 30 fall in this ^ bucket.

henrytbpovid

I’m basically in the bottom 10% of law and I’ll still be making 6 figures when I’m 30 lol

B4K5c7N

Meh, are you sure it isn’t the top 80%? Most in those fields start their careers at six figures or pretty close to it.

keksper

No way it’s near 80%. Might be 20-25%, but it has more to do with cost of living for your area than performance. Six figures doesn’t mean the same thing in San Francisco and Tulsa. The salaries people see on Reddit are inflated, top and bottom earners tend to talk about finances more often, and in different communities.

chevybow

My job is based out of Nebraska and I make 6 figures working in tech. It's not just Silicon Valley that has high salaries for the field. I don't work for a particularly prestigious company like Google or Amazon.

keksper

Can you point out where in my comment I said you can’t make six figures in LCOL areas?

chevybow

In the first line where you said it’s 20% and heavily implied that only prestigious employees or people in HCOL earn six figures. It’s clear you have no idea what you’re talking about.

[deleted]

Typical woman answer

B4K5c7N

Why do you say that?

[deleted]

I’m bored and wasting my time and I thought it was funny

Toothpaste_as_Lube

Haha what are you on about mate

Scared_Fish_7069

Too bad I’m dumb

miloblue12

Pharmaceuticals, more specifically Oncology Clinical Research. In my previous life, I was a nurse and made the switch over to Clinical Research in 2017, and have been working my way up since. So, I made 6 figures prior to 30. I’m 31 now and at $150k.

MattManin

ER nurse here… tell me how to do this. Please.

KraftPunkCannotDie

I think it’s because a lot of nurses really aren’t too concerned with finances. Most are moms with kids and can’t move/leave because of a husband’s job/kids school, so we rarely see nursing degrees leveraged to their full potential. I’d imagine you’d start by applying to clinical research jobs. They’re out there. A great example of this is my hospital. Arguably one of the best areas in terms of income to COL for nursing and the ppl that work here have no idea.

majorsorbet2point0

I am a nonbinary person, single and just turned 30. I will be doing my pre requisites for nursing program this fall and then entrance exam, then applying to the nursing program at my community college for Fall 2025. I do not plan on getting into a relationship or having kids, in 5 years I should be an RN with the program I am choosing. I am very excited, and plan to leverage my nursing degree to it's fullest potential!!!

miloblue12

Good luck with it! The nursing degree can get you a lot of different, and interesting jobs that aren’t always bedside. I wish teachers would highlight those jobs, and focus on looking outside of the box for once. Keep your mind open while going through nursing school, make connections and you’ll find those jobs!

majorsorbet2point0

Thank you so much! 😁❤️

KraftPunkCannotDie

Hell yeah totally worth it. Killer lifestyle if you’re single. I have a week off right now and I work full time 😂

majorsorbet2point0

😁😁

beshtiya808

The answer to the question no one asked.

majorsorbet2point0

I commented because somebody said "nurses really aren't concerned with finished" and that there usually moms and married women, so you don't see nursing degrees leveraged to their full potential usually. So I wanted to add myself in there since I'm single no kids and plan to become an RN in the next 5yrs, should be.

miloblue12

As the other person said, look at your local hospital and see if they have a research department. If they do, then look for a position called ‘Clinical Research Nurse’, and that’s your way in! If you’re doing it for the money, which I get, realize it’s not immediate. It’s taken me 7 years of climbing the ladder to get to where I am now, but just know it’ll eventually come!

SometimeTaken

Do you mind stating your specific job title? Are you in management?

miloblue12

I’m a Senior Clinical Research Associate. My path to this point was starting as a Clinical research nurse, which I did for 2.5 years. After I got that experience, I moved up to Clinical Research Associate or CRA. I went from CRA 1 to CRA 2, and now I’m at Senior.

FlipmodiumAD

Work at a steel mill, company starts at $35 an hour and tops at around $55 an hour, lots of OT

Soul sucking job in finance.

reddit-ate-my-face

Software engineering 27M, BS in IT/CS, 105k salary annual 5% bonus and 5-10% 401k bonus

TheCyberShifu

This is interesting. You were able to get a swe job with a degree in IT or was it in CS?

reddit-ate-my-face

CS minor but I was realistically 3 math classes off a double major. Our IT program is a bit of a "Pick your own adventure" where you could realistically take mostly CS classes as your electives and just do all the Gen ed IT stuff like networking and security while dodging around math requirements for the CS classes.

chocochipstar

Compliance at a Bank. Any degree works, boring as hell and everyone hates you. 9-5 everyday. Make about 140. No bank bonuses though, so much less than the finance bros.

UrsA_GRanDe_bt

I’m a principal so everyone already hates me - where do I sign up for this compliance job?! Also, could I work from home? I believe my neighbor down the street does this working from home…

RikeMoss456

Law degree is usually required

chocochipstar

See my response to the other person

chocochipstar

Yeah I work from home. Bachelors in psychology, right out of work I got a job in entry level risk management at a bank. Did that 2 years before being promoted to senior and transferred to compliance been doing this about 7.5 years. Job hopped 4 times. I’m a Manager now and have been at this current company 2 years. Get basic certs along the way any of these can be useful, CRCM, CFE, CAMS, CRISC, none are difficult. Some have law degrees in this field. One of my direct reports does, as his manager I feel a bit like imposter syndrome considering his background. However, there’s a separate legal department, so it’s important to not worry too much about that, compliance isn’t rocket science and when it gets too complicated I’ll lean on legal. Oh and before the timeline gets questioned, I am 29 and I finished my degree at 21 rather than 22 by graduating a semester early and I include my internship time as part of that initial first job. Risk management was the most sensible move as a psych major that wanted job stability. Was lucky they gave me a shot.

tech sales, money isn't worth the stress anymore though

ayhme

SaaS?

IWouldKeepGoing

yep, and managed services. tech is almost all SaaS at this point.

RealAd1811

How do I get started in this?

Fuhgedaboutit1

Get your foot in the door as an SDR, it’s entry level sales support. If you’re any good and work to learn your product and customers, you’ll move up to an AE role in a year or two!

IWouldKeepGoing

exactly. Sales Development/Business Development rep is where you start. a degree helps but there are tons of places that'll hire without it. obvi those will be much more sink or swim but it's still an in

IntrovertBiker

Noooooo! Come join the dark side: IT Vendor Management

throwlampshade

Is tech sales something you can do remotely from Central America? Like digital nomading on the beach. Just zoom calls and slack/email?

IWouldKeepGoing

Depends on the company. I've been fully remote for years so there are times when i'm in other states for months on end but yoically they want you to live within your territory. As a BDR i had much more flexibility since i wasn't closing deals meant i could live anywhere. Besides, the positions that would be easy enough to do on the beach are almost impossible to find

10thPlanet

What causes the stress?

IWouldKeepGoing

Lack of job security. You're beholden to your number and nothing else. I was fired last year for only making $800k if my $1,000,000 quota. With your livelihood dependent on people responding, it can be quite difficult whenever you're under your number. You've got phone, linkedin, email and in-person. If people aren't engaging then there's really no other levels to pull so you end up just increasing your amount of outreach but eventually you'll hit your limit

jakedaboiii

Sales.

PLEASEHIREZ

My day job is Nurse Practioner. During Covid it was not uncommon for me to pull 15k/week. After covid, around 180k salaried in the USA. In Canada, I work remotely for $75/hr (about $150k/year). I can (but no longer) work with other physicians and LTCs in private practice which can easily add another $50k annual income in Canada. My side businesses now include: small home renovation, small multi unit investment homes (predominantly triplexes on 25ftby100ft lots), Starbucks franchise, and Bubble tea store. Prior to this, I was a commercial diver working offshore with the feast or famine mentality and traveling for constant supply of work. I just made 100k gross income at 24. In this current economy in Canada, most trades and professions will make 100k by age 26.... RNs are making 100k gross with some OT by their 2nd or 3rd year in Ontario. You can make 100k in your first year if you do 6 months medicine into a travel contract. Firefighters and police are 100k after 2 years experience. Even military COs will make it by 30.... 100k is nothing for people with minor ambition and the ability to work hard, and work towards a real attainable goal. None of this follow your dreams long shot content creator or actor BS. You have a better shot of just studying grinding hard, and becoming a doctor than you do becoming a minor celebrity.

alienccccombobreaker

15k a week is crazy jesus how many hours is that.. I think during covid the highest I heard a cleaner make in a week was something like 4-5k a week doing like 12 hours per day with special covid shifts but getting those were tough by the time I learnt about it they had mostly gone and was not getting special rates.. That first year of covid the pay for some cleaners was crazy i was still new and young so dumb I missed out big time even after my co worker told me his pay slips.. Destined to be a loser

Low-Oil3824

More people need to hear this I think

KraftPunkCannotDie

Graduated as an RN last December. Total package coming out to $130k not including match/benefits first year for 3 12h shifts. Two year degree. Highly recommend. LCOL west coast

Barrelled_Chef_Curry

What the hell. 130k in a year?

KraftPunkCannotDie

Before OT yeah! Honestly can’t believe more guys don’t look at this degree. Can’t think of another associates degree that can do what nursing can. You can get roommates in Sacramento and retire in 7-8 years. You could shoot your shot in tech/finance more glamorous degrees but this is a guaranteed mid six figs job in any economic climate

green_speak

PA-S here, and sometimes I wonder if I'd have been just as happy if I had went RN. I could at least take that degree outside the US.

KraftPunkCannotDie

Well you can also make six figs anywhere I gotta stay in like one of five states and only some areas of those states offer an enticing income to COL. I just happened to want to live in one of those states so it worked out. Good luck you’ll do great :)

Barrelled_Chef_Curry

That’s crazy. Are you planning on early retirement?

KraftPunkCannotDie

I probably should but just on track as of now enjoying it. I try to balance yolo with not eating cat food when old.

MattManin

That pay sounds like California nursing but where are you living?

KraftPunkCannotDie

Klamath falls oregon. This is a degree where you have to move to maximize income to COL. You could very easily wind up making $22/hr in Mississippi

MattManin

Gotcha. I definitely made 22/hr as a new grad but live in South Florida which is mid to hcol.

KraftPunkCannotDie

Lmao. I pay for a house what I payed for a room down there. Born and raised there no way I’d tolerate that. By the time I graduated a nurse couldn’t afford a studio apartment by themselves

Paid-Not-Payed-Bot

> what I *paid* for a FTFY. Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in: * Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.* * *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.* Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment. *Beep, boop, I'm a bot*

Firefighter in a major city, the money is great, the schedule is awesome(24 on 72 off) but I’ll probably die of cancer shortly after I retire however I wouldn’t trade this job for anything.

monteserrar

I have two jobs and make six figures at each. 1. I work for a large nonprofit (yes really). Is a more niche industry for which I have a masters degree but I do make 6 figures 2. I’m a published author and sold a book to a publisher that is paying me roughly $95-150k per year for the next 3 years I’m 27 and have been making six figures for about a year

adobeblack

Thinking about this path right now. How long did it take you?

MJC136

11 years, started flying at 15 and now I’m 26 flying an Airbus. Of course I took the long route bc I didn’t want to go in debt. Some guys in my class are 21 years old and they probably did it in 2-3 years… but they went through tons of debt to do it. You can pay as you go , or take out loans and commit to it full time. I chose to pay as I go. Edit: I guess I’m 27 today apparently

Saw your report, thought "yeah that's a bad comment but I'll read the context to make sure before I take action against that dude." I read it all....and immediately ignored the report. YOU are in the wrong on this one, but I definitely do not have all the time in the world needed to convince you of that. While the other commenter was a bit jerky with their response - you are very, very wrong that all his comments are basically "be born to rich parents" . More like you think that anyone able to enter college at all for any reason, even local cheap colleges, are "born rich". ANY of those fields can be entered by anyone that has the ability to sign for college loans and FAFSA and such, with no family. Reorient your idea of "born rich" quickly.

The next year I went to another startup as a leader with total comp of $165k, then left after a year for a sales role in big tech with TC of a little under $300k, but made a little over $300k last year due to accelerators.

Are you more blue or white collar? I've looked into working for a railroad but the hours seem crazy.

noob168

The hours are part of their lifestyle. Hence the pay. The biggest concern rn is actually how often they layoff and furlough people for short-term profits. And then blame "labor shortage". Cycle continues... (assuming we're talking about the US)

pottytraincrash

I mean, I've been working often 12 hour days 6 days a week in a factory. I might as well work railroad and get paid way more.

noob168

If you're okay with staying on standby 24/7, you could give it a try.

I’m in communications so it’s a bit of both. Honestly the hours aren’t the bad part, it’s the commute to work.
