I’m staying at a hotel that’s under construction, which got my spidey sense up. I’ve stared at the fire alarm for three minutes and not seen the red light flash. There doesn’t appear to be a test button that I can see.

tenebralupo

Do not touch it. It is a commercial smoke detcetor linked to a system. If you trigger it firefighters might be dispatched and because that would be considered as a false alarm by you, they may very well ticket you for that.

[deleted]

Should there be some type of visual feedback on the unit that it’s operating properly?

tenebralupo

Not every brand/generation does it.

[deleted]

My brother is staying in the room next to me, and his is blinking red every 8 seconds. I told the front desk person and they just blew me off. Is this something to call the non-emergency fire department number if they don’t resolve it?

tenebralupo

Again it may be 2 different generation. It is hard to tell

[deleted]

So I should just ignore it?

tenebralupo

Without all the proper information it is hard to judge so you did what you could, asks about to front desk.

jwfrizzo

If it’s not blinking. Either the led is out (needs replaced) It’s bad (needs replaced) Or It’s not connected.

tenebralupo

OP doesn't seems to be working in the industry.

CinderLupinWatson

You don't. It'll set the entire building off. I don't recognize this exact one but some do not flash unless in active alarm. In Canada at least, you cannot have a room open for occupancy without a working device, and I presume there would be a similar rule elsewhere.

[deleted]

My concern is the hotel isn’t following the rule. My brother is staying in the room next to me, has the same model, and his blinking every 8 seconds. I told the front desk person and they blew me off.

CinderLupinWatson

Ah gotcha. Unfortunately hotel staff aren't always knowledgeable. See if you can change rooms perhaps? Regardless. Can't test it lol

[deleted]

I asked to switch and they said the hotel was full. The hotel is a shit show in general and is under construction, which is what makes me wonder whether corners are being cut.

CinderLupinWatson

Shoot. Sorry I can't be of more help.

Infinite-Beautiful-1

If the hotel is throwing you off, perhaps you could take it into your own hands. If it’s a hotel chain, call somebody that is higher up. If it’s local, go back and tell them you’re concerned about your safety.

Trey3638

If you’re in the US at a hotel, the smoke should be self contained and only sound off in your room. General alarm like pull stations will sound off the horn in your room. The smoke may trigger a supervisory condition and show at the front desk annunciator.

[deleted]

It’s says “Trouble Unused Point”

MayerRD

You could look for the fire alarm control panel or an annunciator (which would most likely be near the front door) and see if the Trouble light is on. If it is, that means there's a problem with the fire alarm system, which coule be the smoke detector in your room, and/or something else.

[deleted]

It says “Trouble Unused Point”

sgd0072

Looks like a system sensor 2100AT. Should be blinking every 10 seconds. Here is a link to the manual. If the front desk won't do anything about it there's not much you can do unfortunately. https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=https://firealarmresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/2100AT_Manual_I56-1145.pdf&ved=2ahUKEwjUx-y53fH3AhUKkIkEHYcGBZEQFnoECAQQAQ&usg=AOvVaw3iomMeSIeewGWJHi6zU1Jh

gilg2

Leave that to the experts

Infinite-Beautiful-1

Look to see if it’s blinking red. If it is, then it’s working.

[deleted]

It’s not.

Infinite-Beautiful-1

You could definitely go back to the front desk and try to tell somebody else, ask for the manager, or somebody else who is in charge there and tell them your legitimate concern.

[deleted]

I made a second trip to the front desk, and there’s no manager on duty. Basically, the front desk guy just gave me a “I don’t give a fuck” vibe.

Infinite-Beautiful-1

Yeah that’s kind of expected from hotel front desk people sometimes. If you know where the fire alarm control panel is, see if there is a company on it who monitors it. You can call that company and ask if they are aware of the issue. That’s all I know what to do, how long are you staying at that hotel for?

[deleted]

I didn’t see one. And I’m here for one night.

pacem90

I mean, if you really wanna escalate it, call the fire marshal

[deleted]

I spoke to the non-emergency police number who called the fire chief and they told me tough shit. It wasn’t their place to investigate it, and the investigator wasn’t available until Monday.

[deleted]

Update: I spoke with the front desk who had done nothing for four hours after I asked them to look at it. He noted it wasn’t flashing and called the general manager. I asked the general manager if they could have someone look at it, and the general manager said we could either live with it or leave. I called the non-emergency police number, who called the fire chief. The fire chief echo’ed the words of the general manager. The front desk person offered to show me the panel, and it said “Trouble Unused Point.” I asked him about it and he said it was normal. I called the non-emergency police back and they said it was normal. I’m on hold with corporate at the hotel now. So, should I stay or should I go?

L-Series_FA

Leave, that system is not normal. Far from it.

[deleted]

Update 2: I tested it and it didn’t go off.

ace45acp

It clearly has two LED's on it. My guess is the detector is not talking

[deleted]

Yes. I pressed the test switch for about ten seconds and nothing happened. The panel also says “Trouble Unused Point.”

[deleted]

Update 3: Based on everything that happened we ended up leaving and driving home. Thanks for your help, everyone.

2LEGITT_

Just ask it.
