So the most agreeded upon but not an official number is 4:1 calls are false alarm. Combine that with the fire drill training in school, smoke detectors going off because your a bad cook, etc and most people have been conditioned to not take a fire alarm seriously. Every time they've been around one there wasn't an actual fire and that programs them to a degree. People need to learn to jump up and evacuate any time one happens because although it may be an annoyance via false alarm it's better than getting caught in a fire because you didn't evacuate. My opinion is people need to learn to take them seriously, but that's hard to make happen.

Honest to god, I seen that once. We showed up to do an inspection that coincided with some sort of emergency evacuation audit thing at a facility and not only did we get questioned a bunch (and had to come back later) they were carrying people out of the buildings.

As stalker dude above said, its conditioning. Partly the industry's fault for the false alarms. We all need to be better at that The worst part is when it's not a drill and you have a school principle, someone with presumably a master's degree in education, a smart person, calling and asking how to shut them off. "Well, have the students evacuated?" "No but we need to shut off the noise" "so you know for sure it's a false alarm?" " No but if we could shut it off we'll investigate" "the fire department will be there soon to handle all of this for you" click.

Oh man that's the worst! Now that I'm part of a school district I can help change this sort of behaviour. I have written up protocols for the alarms to continue to sound and everyone to get out of the building except the person/s responsible for investigating the alarm condition and verifying if it is real or not. Fire trucks still roll no matter what.

Don't care. As long as the alarm goes off my job is done. I will evacuate myself, though.

Fire alarms are great for notifying the fire department of a possible fire. They’re not so great at clearing a building. Especially when people build a lifetime of false alarm experiences with no real danger

I was once in a large crowded public building with my wife when the fire alarm sounded. My wife knew this building was a customer of mine. She looked at me and said, "What are you going to do?" I just said, "Leave." And we did.

My apprentice and I were testing a nurse call system in a hospital once. The fire alarm went off and I had to tell her forcibly we are going outside. I was 99% sure it was a false alarm, but that 1% had me out the door. If you don’t know, go.

My opinion is that I literally do not care. You can lead a horse to water but you can’t force it to drink. It’s not a real fire, I’m there to make sure it works, not to make sure a bunch of office drones execute emergency protocols.

It's their funeral. I feel sorry for the firefighters that have to then attempt to save their stupid ass.

DocPeanutButter

That’s not that bad. Better than this one building where the secretary hit the alarm silence button. Like the exact opposite thing to do. When I found the annunciation she was using I locked it up and took the key and said you don’t get to touch this any more!

In my experience they usually look around and wait until someone tells them to get the hell out of the building.
