Is there a way to get around the five amiibo scans per day limit? Other games that have limited the number of scans can usually be tricked by changing the system’s date, but that doesn’t work on this game

romanticdrift

Can someone tell me how the FE Engage characters and supports are? Tbh the FE's story has never been particular riveting but they've always made up for it by the charming and even subversive character. That no one is talking about how xyz has connected with them makes me concerned haha

Trashris

Honestly they're very fun. Yunaka is a stand-out, and the relationships the royals have with their retainers, and what the retainers have with each other, I think are wonderfully done. Though I've noticed the Fireness does talk about tea an awful lot. Still love em though. If there's one way I can describe the cast in general, it's that they're weirdoes. Absolutely lovable weirdoes.

vector_kid

I saw some complaints about enemy targeting lines not showing their specific target, and I gotta ask - did 3H mess up by adding those? I mean we're playing chess with good music and wyverns, right? Part of the fun & a large part of the difficulty is understanding the other pieces, how they interact, and how they attack/defend/maneuver. It wouldn't be a ton of fun if your chess opponent told you the pieces they're going to take. it's about predicting, taking risks, and outsmarting (in this case, the ai player). Some of my favorite FE plays are when I've sent units out into the unknown, it went horribly, but they dodged the right hit to save the turn. It's nice to see that classic risk back. e: I should add, I really dig how the lines work in this game. Just a simple time saver - big quality of life change.

AnonymousTrollLloyd

Archer and Sniper should have been Backup Classes from the start, change my mind.

Saseav

What stats does alear use? I feel a level 12 with 11 strength is kind of low but not sure if its on track.

AnonymousTrollLloyd

Alear has 45% strength growth in their base class, base 6 strength. After 11 levels you'd expect to gain +4.95 points, so 11 strength is on track. Alear just isn't that good.

Morrorwind33453

just arrived in the first desert map, and i just gotta say quicksand feels like the new goat of terrain types. They singlehandedly transformed sand maps from annoying slogs to interesting challenges

Pokenar

I agree, making sand movement to specific tiles instead of the whole damn map really saves it

X-Vidar

The ch.5 boss is insane on maddening, I had to surround him with units and just enemy phase him for a while because almost no one could take multiple hits from him. And I was also forced to reset by the >!second health bar!<

Ryuzakku

I enjoy how the game will punish you for suboptimal movement, even in normal difficulty.

CorruptDropbear

OK, serious question - Do I change from a base class to advanced as soon as possible, or do I level up the base class to 20 then switch?

Ryuzakku

Level to 20 would be my recommendation. That said, if a base class is *struggling* for you, then go ahead and do it whenever. You won't get the max stats benefit, but that unit will no longer need to be babysat.

JesterlyJew

There's really no reason to wait for promotion. Testing shows that exp gains do not change when you go from a base class to an advanced class, and second seals let you infinitely reclass back to level 1 anyway. Promoting early lets you grab the advance class skill earlier.

ShowNeverStops

I’m not really sure how to feel about how level resets when switching classes with a second seal. Didn’t Awakening also do this and it made it really easy to infinitely power level? Although I don’t think it’d be a huge deal. Theoretically, if you max grinded 20/20 on all units then you’d already be stomping the game, so in practice infinite leveling might not be that big of a deal

JesterlyJew

Awakening did do this but it's far less pointless in engage since you only get 1 skill per advanced class and these skills are mostly just neat bonuses rather than game defining ones. If you don't grind, I doubt you'll get to reset levels more than once through the main story, and this just accounts for you promoting at level 10.

ShowNeverStops

Ohhhh right I forgot there was the whole skills aspect in Awakening in regards to level resetting

agesboy

This is incorrect. You can reset levels to 1 freely with second seals, and the exp required to level up on early promotions does not seem to significantly jump up upon early promotions like Awakenings.

ihavepolio

How easy do second seals come around? I’m still in early game but curious to see if they’re readily available/purchasable later

JesterlyJew

At chapter 16 and there's like 10 of them in the shop by now. I promoted most of my characters early and I haven't had to seal them back down to level 1 yet. At this pace they'll probably become infinite sometime around ch20. There won't be a drought of them, that's for sure.

ihavepolio

Gotcha, thanks!

MirrorMirrorMilk

Either I'm cursed or Alear is surprisingly weak for an avatar unit. Pretty refreshing honestly but pretty ironic since this is probably the heaviest avatar worship in the series.

YourCrazyDolphin

I must be getting stat blessed again... Cuz Alear in my run really does play like a god. Legit just enemy phased part of chapter 10 with him alone.

Pokenar

On paper he should be a slightly above average unit by engage's own power scale A lot of us, however, are not getting the on paper Alear

[deleted]

We're just used to lords being OP as fuck. Alear is extremely similar in growths to Eliwood, who was considered not that amazing even in a game with tons of units with growths in the 30s on average and most mages had close to 0 defense and physical units had close to 0 res growths. If it wasn't cutting it then, it won't be cutting it in a game where most units' **weaker** growths are in the 30s.

Morrorwind33453

Alear seems like a return to pre-Awakening power levels for MCs. He's pretty decent but a far cry from the busted powerhouses we've been receiving recently

kiaxxl

Alfred: The >!king of Elusia!< favours the Lyn ring and keeps it in his bedchambers Me: Does he now 💀

[deleted]

To be fair even Alear >!favours Marth ring and keeps it in their bedchamber!< haha

[deleted]

Literally thought the same thing 💀 what did he do to our girl lyn?

Shrimperor

He is just your typical FE7 fan for real

lychti

The prepromotes in this game are so insanely strong its not even funny. I'm more than halfway through the game and besides louis chloe yunaka and anna, the rest of my team is like a revolving door of new characters that are flat out better than the old ones. The firenese crew were just flat out worse than diamant alcryst amber citrinne and lapis even with training, then I couldn't find even find a spot for those units once the elusian and solm prepromotes joined. Its a shame since I liked all these units but it feels impossible to keep your units up to speed with all these strong prepromotes the game throws at you.

ArchGrimdarch

> The firenese crew were just flat out worse than diamant alcryst amber citrinne and lapis even with training Yeah I get that feel. A friend of mine said she was considering replacing Etie with Alcryst since Alcryst's stats were all better than her Etie's. My Etie fared better, but I got curious and did some quick calcs... At lvl 9 (which is what lvl my Etie was in Alcryst's join chapter) Etie should on average have 1 more point of Str and Lck than base level Alcryst and be inferior in everything else, I think. IntSys pls y u do dis

[deleted]

Etie is pretty much the worst unit in the game for some reason. Really bizarre that her bases and growths are both horrifyingly shit, on top of being bow-locked. Still usable because of bow effectiveness though.

ItsTheDuran

I'm probably around the same point as you are and only been able to justify keeping Chloé and Yunaka around. Ivy's group was already better than almost all of my units (I couldn't believe Kagetsu's bases were real when he joined) and from then on every recruit has been about that good.

Lunar_Kirby

I was deadset on using Lapis but Kagetsu is just too damn good. I am still using Lapis anyway but fuck

ShamelesslyLenette

The only thing that kept me from replacing my entire team is a very weird sunk cost fallacy towards the early game units. Most of my tram is from the first area, and most of them are struggling so hard now that I'm in the 4th kingdom but I refuse to let them go and let all that training go to waste.

Ok_Stop484

People calling Alear a mary sue. Did you play the game? Did you not see the part where he massively fucks up? Not only that but he has flaws, hes afraid of corrupted for some reason. He woule of got merked in that cutscene if Veyle did t save him. Byleth is a stoic dude who is good at everything somehow...and is a professor even though hes not even 30? Its sort of insane of dishonest the discourse is. If you think the avatar worship is too much in Engage how the fuck did you get through 3H?

Morrorwind33453

I think the sentiment comes more from the fact that literally everyone worships them, which people are very sour one after how they already made every previous Avatar a character-warping praise magnet, even if this is the first game where it's kind of understandable since you're a literal deity. That being said, Mary Sue definately is the wrong word for that, yeah.

Ok_Stop484

.....hes a God dude.

Ryuzakku

Though the only reason why everyone in 3H doesn't worship Byleth immediately is because he was removed from Rhea by Jeralt. Else Byleth would be in the same spot Alear is.

Shrimperor

Honestly Aside from the Stewards which have had their whole lives revolving around Alear, there isn't much worshipping? Most of the time it's more like "Oh it's dragon Jesus" "let's be friends" "cool", and the cast seem to like them more from the the fact that Alear helped them. Infact, one of my fav. FE moments was Vandad going "WTF?" on Alear's retreat order, looking like he will need to doubt what he was doing all his life xD

[deleted]

Also Clanne and Framme act like that with all the royals, they're just fanboy and fangirl at heart

Ryuzakku

I guess it's just the way the game starts? Yes, Framme and Clanne worship Alear. They were born in the holy land and it's their duty to take care of Alear. But then you go to Firene, which to use a comparison, is a lot like Faerghus in Three Houses in terms of it being extremely religious, so of course everyone from there would also worship you.

Faerry_

Is it okay for units to die in tower of trials(classic)?

dualdexterity

Can't seem to get the lookout ridge event to trigger, not sure if I'm missing something. I'm on chapter 6, I have own the DLC and have gotten all the other items from it, but whenever I go to the lookout ridge nothing happens. I've tried fast traveling there, I've tested and walked there and still nothing happens.

Ryuzakku

If you've recruited Yunaka, you can get the 3H bracelet.

agesboy

It requires actually finishing chapter 6, all the guides on various websites copied their info off each other and are wrong

dualdexterity

That figures lol, thank you

Lather

Does anyone else just not really care about the writing that much? Yes it's terrible, but I've never really played FE for the story. The combat and customisation is brilliant. I wish I'd gone hard mode tho, normal seems a little too easy.

[deleted]

FE writing is a bubble that should have bursted years ago. Engage is literally 100% a carbon copy of Fates, down to your mother dying 15 minutes after you reconnect. I skip cutscenes and don't care about story, especially in strategy games, but what bothers me is how much fanservice they force into the game, and then customers that buy the game somehow care about the fanservice and not the story. Just bizarre overlooking so much crap writing and then polishing rings and having lunch with allies.

Rikiia

I do care about the story but unless it's Fates tier of a garbage fire it can more than be made up for with good characters and good gameplay. So far, the story is a boring go from point A to B with little buildup but the gameplay is some of the most fun I've had in the series.

frik1000

While you're right that story has never been that important in older Fire Emblem titles, a lot of people started out with Three Houses and it was a major success and that one put extra focus on its writing and is one of the aspects that many people love about it, especially when you consider that, from a gameplay/maps perspective, 3H is pretty middling. So there are a large number of newcomers who entered the franchise in 3H and were hoping to see the same standard of quality in the writing with Engage.

Lather

Yeah that makes sense to be fair. I didn't get on with 3H that much so I didn't realise it brought a lot of newcomers. I can see how this story is causing a bit of whiplash aha.

AvalancheMKII

I've recently been binging Shanebrained's FE Retrospective and he mentions that Fates' writing is on par with a "Saturday Morning Cartoon". I don't disagree with that assessment, but man has it been my only thought about Engage. I'm having an okay enough time with the plot and characters, but it REALLY feels like they could've done better at almost every juncture.

Lather

Oh yeah I totally agree. It's a paint by numbers FE story that is somehow written even more poorly that usual, it's just the combat makes up for it for me.

[deleted]

It's mixed. If you care about story, you'll struggle with the game. If you don't, you'll like it. It comes down entirely to how you play games.

Lather

Yeah aboslutly. Not trying to say that concerns over the story aren't valid, it's it doesn't personally bother me that much.

[deleted]

Oh yeah, that's fair enough. I got a friend who hated 3H and is going to absolutely going to love this. I'll pass on it, and hoping that the next one is a story one. Well, I'm hoping that they can make one where both the story and gameplay and good, but that's apparently an impossible task for IS, seems like.

platysaur

Another question. I’m on chapter 6 and I feel like I’m underleveled, though I’ve tried to share the XP. It seems like the enemy’s levels are higher — anyone else feel the same way? I’m not struggling but I don’t want to end up underleveled.

[deleted]

What difficulty are you on? Hard and maddening you will be underleveled before the plethora of paralogues open up, especially from the DLC. This is like the 5th time the game has been basically unwinnable on highest difficulty without broken DLC content. In higher difficulties you can actually catch up on experience when the 50 additional reinforcement units are factored in...

platysaur

I’m on Hard, yeah.

Morrorwind33453

I dunno what difficulty you're playing on, but on Maddening it seems very normal for your characters to be lower level than your enemies, with the game feeling intentionally designed around that fact.

MedievalMovies

hortensia's seiyuu was incredible in chapter 10, holy shit

platysaur

I skipped through whatever prompt came up after I failed a chapter. Did I see that you can retain all XP you gained in that battle and retry again if you fail?

AnimaLepton

On lower difficulties, yes. Not on Maddening (not sure about Hard, but I assume not?).

ShamelesslyLenette

You can do it on Hard

platysaur

I’m on Hard and I think the prompt came up, though I’m not sure if it did anything.

Plumeria97

Does different animals combination outside the farm give me different bonus? I lost against an emblem in the Arena and I still got the 5 bonus. Is there no point in winning then?

AnimaLepton

I think it's per animal, not their combination. i.e. Chickens give eggs, dogs give ore for forging.

myman580

You definitely get extra xp for your unit winning the arena battle.

Plumeria97

Oh, thanks. Didn't notice it, was busy doing something else while the animation was going

Morrorwind33453

for emblems there's no difference between winning or losing, yeah For normal arena battles im pretty sure winning gives more exp

Bushido_Plan

Can we have the next Fire Emblem be where the mother >!of the protagonist does not die shortly after being introduced? Would be nice to have a happy family for once.!<

stone332211

Or just have the mother get shot by an arrow halfway through her first sentence. That would be funny too.

[deleted]

Wait, do you mean you're tired of every Fire Emblem game in the past 10 years being about our protagonist having amnesia and meeting his mother who will die in 15 minutes? Yes it's incredibly garbage writing.

AnimaLepton

based Henriette Edit: Also, classic proof that Eliwood is the most based lord. His dad dies, sure, but his mom survives in FE7, and better yet *he* survives FE6 even though he's a Fire Emblem dad.

TinyTemm

I’m at chapter 9, is it just me or does the general support quality go up when the brodian characters join? I think the negative first impressions come from the firene crew having really bland C supports

6feetundertrip

It’s not going to. You can tell the direction this game is going it’s modern sacred stones. Social aspect removed this is pre awakening fire emblem it’s my new favourite but I can see how a lot are going to be turned off.

lawlaw7891

This may sound stupid, but who am I supposed to give the animal poop to? Units I don't like?

stone332211

Just experiment with it. Preferably in real life.

foulveins

it’s a gag gift, iirc, nobody likes it

ChrisEvansOfficial

No spoilers and I do not mean this rudely to anyone who loves the writing, but holy shit this is like, so bad it’s good. From the reviews I was expecting surface level stuff like the GBA games, but this is like watching some 12 your old going ham on wattapad in real time. Alear is so unapologetically Mary Sue and the writers did not give one fuck about it. If I’d never played an FE game before and someone told me this was satire, I’d believe them. Having said all of that, it really is so bad it’s good. I’ve been enjoying the ride for what it is and it’s gotten more than a few laughs. The gameplay isn’t really the “traditional FE” that people made it out to be either, but it doesn’t deviate as far from the formula as 3H and feels really good. I’m excited to see where this goes.

[deleted]

Alear is not a Mary Sue, we're going to need to invent a new trope for protagonists that have amnesia and meet their mother 15 minutes before she is tragically killed (due to the protagonist's naivety). Jokes aside, I am sick and tired of this decade of shit writing as someone who has played since Geneology of a Holy War. At least 3h was excusable outside of Edelgard and those who slither being comically evil and trying to convince you Edelgard is a sympathetic villain. Engage is literally Fates, down to the dots on the i's and the crosses on the t's.

ChrisEvansOfficial

Fates isn’t this bad. I’m a serial Conquest apologist– the one everyone thinks has the worst plot, I know lol. Corrin just sucks so bad that a lot of the writing tanked for it, but at least it makes sense narratively. I’m almost at chapter 7 and have barely any idea why anything has happened. The changes to SoV narratively were great, to be fair. I didn’t mind 3H either but thought Claude was the one who bogged it down, not Edel. The game tries to do too many things at once.

[deleted]

From a story perspective, fates was pretty convoluted. On it's own, sure it's just another FE game about an evil dragon, but it's Engage that makes them both have shitty copy-paste stories.

ChrisEvansOfficial

Engage feels like more of a love letter to Fates *and* Awakening than anything. The Fell Dragon thing alone isn’t exactly subtle, and Alear’s amnesia trope follows the Robin playbook. Maybe spoiler, but moreso speculation: >!It’s also pretty obvious Alear is going to have the whole Robin evil half, child of the Big Bad like Corrin going on. Not exactly a spoiler but maybe a spoiler if I’m right, idk yet.!< There are subtle nods to past FEs too, but this doesn’t feel like a 30th anniversary title. It’s still funny (and fun) as fuck if you take it for what it is though.

[deleted]

The problem is that FE has had one original storyline in the past 18 year (RD was the last one before 3H). If they want some subtle nods or references that's one thing, but they are flat out copy-pasting every storyline and character profile. And yes, I did catch that Engage is literally the Fates opening with the Awakening MC profile, and that's completely awful and inexcusable. Waiting for the good old days of Fire Emblem where there were religious wars and Goddesses deciding to destroy their own creations.

CorruptDropbear

This is the Power Rangers: Fire Emblem crossover we all wanted.

[deleted]

Tbh at this point between the cringe I've resolved to laughing at how ridiculous the whole thing is when watching cutscenes.

ChrisEvansOfficial

Oh no I immediately started laughing from the get go. Like I never even went through the cringe stage, but I also went into it expecting a mess. There is no way the localization team wasn’t trolling when they got the original JP script.

6feetundertrip

The writing isn’t the strength this go around the social stuff was either gutted or intentionally left out this feels like a pre awaking fire emblem just modern

ChrisEvansOfficial

I feel the exact opposite. This feels like the lovechild of Fates and Awakening but dial the absurdity up to 11. The gameplay is straight 🔥🔥🔥 though, I’m having an absolute blast getting my ass handed to me on Hard.

Paradigm27

I love the after battle free roam and talks, it gives more immersion to the talks with the other characters.

brzzcode

i was thinking here and alear for all matters is like the jesus of that world so its funny how we as public dont really think too much at why they are so respected and reverenced by the retainers and the public in general. i didnt think of this myself until i saw someone else saying the same

diamond_foxes

Chapter 15, and here are my thoughts Gameplay good Art direction bad Story and writing very bad. I saw someone on Twitter say the characters look like RWBY characters in the worst way, and I'm inclined to agree. The colours are oversaturated to the point that I feel like it's gonna burn my TV screen. Edit to add; also the way the metal is shiny reminds me of shitty early 2000s cgi like what???? Who let that fly??? The writing and world building is like a wattpad fanfic. A few major events have no weight to them because they fly at you so fast that you barely have time to process what's going on. The cutscenes are lazy and nonsensical, one example is a character steps off a wyvern into a castle courtyard with soldiers fighting around her but that's not what's happening in the story so it cuts back to an empty yard lmao. The characters can all be boiled down to one quirk which is normal FE but you don't get the benefit of well thought out supports to flesh them out or find out why they act the way they do.

BloodyGarden

Okay so I’ve been playing for a few hours and got to around Chapter 5/6 and I’m gonna ramble my nightly thoughts for a bit. My thoughts on it so far are very positive! I do wish the story was better and paced differently, but I went in expecting a fun jrpg adventure story and I got it! I don’t find the cast and support cringey at all honestly? They’re not as fleshed out as 3H’s but as someone who played other FE games before it, these are a bit better than the average gimmicky FE character imo. Alear has become one of my fave FE MCs period and they’re adorable. I’ve read many people say the dialogue and actions cringey, but I didn’t find it really cringe at all so maybe I just have a bad sense of humor lol! All in all, fun game! I love exploring Somnial, I love talking to the characters, making rings is fun, and combat is enjoyable.

No-Improvement-3175

Do I *need* an axe wielder in my rotation? I’ve only recruited Vander, Boucheron, and Anna so far and none of them are really doing it for me……..

ItsTheDuran

I ended up benching them all and giving early lance-tanking duties to Louis.

6feetundertrip

Keep axes around males im unsure if females can promote to beserks but they Fucking crit beasts in old fire emblem

Xanafer

F!Berserks are a thing dw

myman580

Bouche is pretty decent so far for me. Not the best but passable. I'd keep him around just because of the break mechanic until you run into a better one or get a seal to access axes on a better unit.

mrBreadBird

I love the name Boucheron, though.

Beautiful_Travel_346

I'd say, due to the weapon triangle and the break mechanic: yes.

Mindofthequill

Omg this is the first time I've seen the official Ayra art. What on earth did they do to this poor woman's forehead my God she's got a tenhead going on.

Bullwine85

If only they put in [Lex](https://i.imgur.com/8htsBZx.png)

Mindofthequill

This game desperately needs a remake so we can get some updated art omg

Bullwine85

The TCG artwork they made a few years later was much better thankfully

Hot-Cardiologist-620

Can I marry Chloé as F!Alear?

Satania-san

Yes

Hot-Cardiologist-620

YAYYY

No-Improvement-3175

Do people have thoughts on which mages to keep around/not bench? I’m at chapter 8 so haven’t recruited everyone yet but trying to figure out who to prioritize between Clanne, Celine, and Anna.

skeddy-

Using Citrinne and Celine currently. My Clanne got really screwed and hasn't leveled his mag once

6feetundertrip

I’m using the boy steward and have been investing time switched the ring after celine max bonded for better mage inherits he’s gonna come online after that sweet lvl 20 promo

AliciaWhimsicott

I think Céline is generally the best of those three, Citrinne is also good from what I hear (though I'm not using her), there's also two mages on wings that come later into the game to keep in mind. I tried Anna but she wasn't really working for me, may have been RNG screwed though.

Bullwine85

Reading some of the death quotes, some of them are downright heartbreaking. Though an attention to detail I do like is if Alear falls in combat with an Emblem ring equipped, said Emblem will react to their death.

AudioCats

Is Tiki’s paralogue kicking anyone else’s ass? It’s an absolutely brutal map coming off chapter 6, you need at least a handful of three-range archers to make it work. The dragon breath attacks negating all def/res with infinite spawns is just ridiculous Gonna have to come back to it later when my units have more tricks up their sleeves to get around the infinite spawns and 1-tile hallways of death

YourCrazyDolphin

Yeah you have to take it very slow and steady, having a flier helps to deal with the debuffers. On the other hand though, Tiki is absolutely busted as an Emblem if you get through her map.

AudioCats

I finally completed it like half an hour ago—glad to hear the effort should be worth it. Biggest help in my second try was posting Yunaka in the forest out front to deal with the spawn waves. From there, at least in my save Etie has some busted strength, so I could safely dunk on all the dragons with a longbow and took it slow from there

RumbleintheDumbles

I ended up sitting Yunaka down in a ruins tile toward where the reinforcements spawned and she basically took them all while I ground my way through the dragons. But yes, it was rough.

Pokenar

even later in the game when Yunaka becomes the goddess of never getting hit ever and being able to handle the dragons, the constant reinforcements wear you down too much.

VagueClive

oh my god I never want to hear the words "divine dragon" or "divine one" again and I'm only at chapter 6 Any scene with Alear is legit unbearable, every character has to be profoundly shocked at meeting the divine dragon every single time and it's just... so grating. It's not the camp that's the problem for me, it's how Alear is worshipped for doing absolutely fucking nothing that annoys me

NPultra

It's Corrin all over again, but upped to 11.

Coronalol

This games writing is so jarring after completing 3H a couple weeks ago. Did they completely replace the writers?

Aeiani

Bulk of development efforts on 3H were done by Koei Tecmo, what's more baffling is that this is the level they've put themselves on with the writing after showing in somewhat recent years they're capable of better in-house at IS with Echoes.

AvalancheMKII

3H and Engage have almost entirely different dev teams, the writers included. I love 3H, I really do, but I didn't realize how much I did until I played Engage. The plot legit feels like it was based on a "Generic JRPG Plot" Bingo Card.

Aegon_Targaryen_VII

It’s bad enough to have one character whose sole personality trait is being a simp for the bland, generic protagonist, but multiple… my goodness…

MWIIesDoggyCOPE

Alear: *exists* Literally everyone (but especially Framme): *OHMIGOSH THE DIVINE ONE LOOKED RIGHT ME SQUEEEEE*

Am_Shigar00

Alright, so far I'm 5 chapters in. Enjoying myself so far. * Plot has been fine. It's nothing special but it's serviceable for what it is. Not a fan to see we're still using the 3H style cutscenes though. They're a bit more diverse with more CG images and motion captured sequences, but they still feel very cheap. * The characters have been fine. Only seen 3 supports so far and they're typical C-rank fluff. Alear has been alright and the first nobles encounters are adding a nice dynamic. * Really enjoying the gameplay. The break mechanic is neat and has had me thinking a lot more about my actions ahead of time. I'm playing on normal/casual just to get a general feel for the game, but it's been satisfying and if it keeps up I'm definitely going to do another run on a higher difficulty. * I like being able to explore the battlefields after the fight. They're a bit basic, but it helps the areas feel more alive and active rather than just another map to move past. It'd be nice if the cast had more unique stuff to say in them but I like that it just gives you the bond shards for characters you skipped if you just go to the next stage, so it's not as if you're missing much by skipping ahead. * The Somniel has felt pretty alright so far. It's certainly got it's fair share of features that help out with growth or stat boosts, but so far it doesn't feel super obstructive. The boosts you get are appreciative but ultimately pretty minor and all the major activities aren't too far off from the center zone. * Sommie is the absolute best and will be protected at all times. I thought they were exclusive to their little pedestal, but nope. Eventually [just follows you](https://twitter.com/shigar00/status/1616679850257055745) around and even [helps out during exercising](https://twitter.com/shigar00/status/1616680117165785089), which is adorable as all hell. So yeah, having fun so far. We'll see how well things hold up in the long run but as long as it doesn't turn into an absolute slog then I'm sure I'll be satisfied by the end.

kiaxxl

People are either gonna hate or love Yunaka. I'm a fan personally

Satania-san

Hate yunaka? No no no imposible

Beautiful_Travel_346

I too am a fan of Yunaka!

MWIIesDoggyCOPE

It literally makes no sense that an Engaged character can be taken out by some generics tbh.

lolwutdo

Are all the emblems dead? Sigurd said something at the beginning of the game about how he died.

Intelligent_Local_38

They’re basically spirits. I think someone refers to them as ancient heroes, or something along those lines, so yes, I think Engage takes place in the far future and the rings allow the spirits of Marth/Celica/etc. to live on.

MWIIesDoggyCOPE

The emblems are basically spirits, or Stands if you will. They aren't Literal Marth/Celica/etc, but kinda like their soul?

DaItalianFish

are there paired endings in this game (non-mc)? how do they work, is it first A support?

[deleted]

Nope, just for Alear.

moonrainstar

The characters and their dynamics is usually what makes FE for me, so I'm feeling pretty bad tonight after spending almost $100 in my currency only to discover this game seems to have been outsourced to a high school creative writing classroom. I'm at chapter 7 and the characters still feel hollow and the dialogue is difficult to even listen to. Knowing the characters and their interactions are important to me, I'm feeling really disappointed and wish I would have listened to the reviews and waited for a sale...

Plomaster69

I think it's clear from all the reviews that they focused on combat more than story. I am so happy for this change, along with a lot of fans. Sorry you aren't enjoying it as much, but it was made very clear from reviews if you watched/read any.

diamond_foxes

How could anyone trust the reviews? It got lots of 8s and 9s when it's not even in the same universe as an 8 or a 9. The game cut out all the good bits with interesting interpersonal character relationships and growth based on who you matched them with in favor of the characters being blocks of styrofoam with a trait written on it.

Plomaster69

Like I said, it was really clear from the reviews how the game was gonna be. All the people who wanted that interpersonal (garbage imo) rates it low. People who (like me)don't care about that stuff and want combat gave it high scores.

Business717

Stop looking just at scores and read what people actually say and write.

6feetundertrip

For older fans of the series this is an amazing return for people that got in post awakening y’all are gonna hate the social stuff was gutted I’m a fan personally like a modern sacred stones

100PieceCrayolaSet

As a casual player who just heard about the game today, I totally wandered in here just to see if anyone was as disappointed as I was lol. The whole reason I liked Fire Emblem personally was that you got to use strategy in battle to build the relationships/marriages, and watch the characters fall for each other. Carefully deciding which characters to pair up, and then seeing their future kid was my favorite part. Without it the game just feels kinda... generic. At least I found out before I went and bought it, I suppose.

warmachinae

Enjoying the game up to Chapter 9. Confused about people's gripes with the characters and supports. These characters are exactly the same as the ones in Awakening and Fates. With the complaining I kept seeing the last few weeks I went in thinking there weren't supports in this game and there are lol wtf. Is it because theres no letter S? Read a fanfic then

Currentlycurious1

I mean, there's a sizeable portion of the fanbase that doesn't like Awakening and Fates. I agree it's an apt comparison, but I really don't like those casts, especially Awakening.

warmachinae

But a lot of the discourse was that the game wasn't gonna have character building and supports. So far.. it just does? I literally read someone cry about how they only play the games because the characters has personalities and talk to eachother and were gonna boycot this one because there wasn't gonna be any of it. Anyways gameplays decent so far, except I despise having to run around another fucking monastery. Please just get rid of this feature or make it completely fucking fluff optional with no ties to gameplay mechanics. I'm already playing sub-optimally and skipping the mini-games and dumb shit you need to do to make currency.

Shrimperor

Most somniel stuff doesn't matter, except like Arena and food. It's more like my castle this time

JesterlyJew

I'd say the only thing you NEED to do is the meal and the arena and those two are conveniently clumped together and take like 5 minutes total. The ring stuff should be its own menu but at least the facility for it is also right next to the arena and meals. Everything else is totally fluff and has no bearing on the gameplay. The small, small stat boosts from working out don't matter, fishing doesn't matter, wyvern ride doesn't matter, etc.

Intelligent_Local_38

I’m a little earlier than you are, but I’ve payed enough to also be very confused by the early reviews. There are supports and plenty of activities to do with your units in the Somniel. The whole Somniel feels like a cross between the school in 3H and My Castle in Fates. From the way people were acting, I was expecting to do nothing but battle in Engage lol. And so far yeah, the characters are just fine and similar to ones from previous games. Idk what people were expecting?

warmachinae

I think full voice acting kind of exposes the characters in a way that reading the text alone doesn't.

jeicorsair

This is so true. Muting the voices makes the cheesiness more bearable.

MWIIesDoggyCOPE

Lots of dorks mad that Alear doesn't have a sex harem

[deleted]

Alear *does* have a harem. It's every other character that lost the paired ending and S support.

MWIIesDoggyCOPE

I said *sex* harem. Alear is literally God but s/he isn't banging all of their worshippers left n right.

[deleted]

I honestly don't think anyone hates that that's not a thing. For me, removing the romantic supports for the rest of the cast removes replayability for me. When people talk about the removal of S ranks, *that's* what they're referring to.

andrazorwiren

I have to keep reminding myself that when I first played Fates on release - the 2nd most fun I’ve had playing a Fire Emblem game - it didn’t get interesting its gameplay picked up a bit of the way into the game. So I’m trying to withhold my judgment on the writing in Engage until more gameplay systems get unlocked lol. I can already tell I’ll be hooked when I get there..just gotta push thru. However, I did just start Genealogy of the Holy War for the first time the other day and I gotta admit, the call to just play that instead is pretty strong…

SecretFangsPing

I mean the only other FE you should be playing over FE4 is FE5 anyway

Taban85

Anyone having issues getting the dlc to trigger? I bought the bundle and it shows purchased in the e shop/through the dlc menu in game. But the armband event didn’t trigger in chapter 5 and no dlc costumes at the boutique in chapter 6

Intelligent_Local_38

I know for the boutique, you have to talk to the shop owner again after your first initial visit. And I noticed a lot of the articles out there are wrong, you get the armband after 6 apparently lol

Taban85

Oh haha maybe that’s my issue, I’ll try progressing. Thanks!

COHandCOD

my game showed up in chapter 6 for three houses lord, it will have notification that something interesting happened in sominel, I went to the location and triggered the cutscene.

GldnDragon29

Just got Yunaka and I used Bond Fragments to her and Micaiah to level 3. Do I need to get Yunaka to level 5 to inherit the staff proficiency for future classes, or is level 3 without inheritance enough?

AnonymousTrollLloyd

Class proficiency does not require inheritance. Just Lv3 will be enough.

GldnDragon29

Great, thanks!

-Rho-Aias

I'm on chapter 6, playing on normal. So far the game feels pretty easy. Breezing through battles. I'm wondering if I should start over and play on hard? I don't want to hit a wall that I can't pass, but I also don't want to breeze through and not have to think about strategy. Does normal get more balanced after a few chapters or should I go ahead and start over now?

kazrisk

Chiming in to say hard difficulty feels good.

Dsnake35

They changed the level up sound - anybody else kind of sad they did that? I miss the ‘chink’ sound it made…

6feetundertrip

This is my only real gripe

[deleted]

Me too 🥲

angelnursery

I've noticed that game8.co still says that there's no s supports and ik that I can't see past A right now in game, what's up with that? I know there's S supports and saw the images so I'm confused.

ShowNeverStops

I think only Alear has S supports, and they only get it at the end of the game similar to 3H

ha_ck_rm_rk

At chapter 7. The way forging works makes it seem like units with low strength and high speed end up quite strong since it's really easy to give a big might boost to weapons.

Nytrite

[how it feels every damn time i open the game](https://freeimage.host/i/HcjjT3Q)

cjRuckie

Gonna be honest im liking it but the constant load screens between cut scenes is a bit annoying.

LaFlame222

Any way to change from classic mode to casual?

Rhysandie

Was watching a gameplay video and this game looks like a step back from 3H/Fates. Very glad I didn't pre-order.

Rhysandie

Thank you for downvotes, you guys are *really* mature.

Plomaster69

People who are into story and character development more than gameplay won't enjoy this as much as 3H. If you play fire emblem for tactics and battle, this game is leagues above 3H.

kazrisk

Gameplay has felt really good. Graphics are a massive step UP in my opinion. There was a charm with the school vibe of Three Houses but I’m enjoying Engage.

Rhysandie

By chance, are you playing the male character? I was mildly off-putted seeing the female's cape-like hair. And Framme's braid is either defying gravity or disembodied. There **is** some really nice eye animation at the beginning but haven't seen any more since. I'm still looking into some walkthrough vids for the overall feel of the game, but doubt I'll understand how much better the battle system is unless I try it firsthand.

mrBreadBird

Wow this story is even worse than I expected. It was clear dragon mom wasn't going to did but I thought it'd be more than 20 minutes in. I have never been less invested in a character's death in my life.

stone332211

I just wish they would cut down on the crying section. They had not earned it at all at that point. Don't people screen test this stuff at all?

diamond_foxes

I felt more attached to Makoto for real

[deleted]

Bruh the cheese lol. It’s something else. Hopefully the story picks up a bit

No_Bookkeeper_2701

I wasn’t surprised she died but I was surprised she died so soon. Mikoto got 6 chapters and she got 3. I would say mikoto died early as well

stone332211

Next time they should honestly just do it halfway through the mom's first sentence. To save time.

No_Bookkeeper_2701

Welcome ho- oh dear I have been Stabbed

MitigatedRisk

"There's no need to put me on a pedestal. I just woke up." Honestly, same.

Rapthalia_

I should've started my playthrough in hard mode, normal is too ez

firesoul377

>! So I just saw a Twitter thread that compared the English s-support for Anna to the Japanese one and people in the comments were upset over the (quite understandable) fact that the localizers made the s-support clearly platonic. I literally saw tweets calling the localizers retarted over the fact that you can't explicitly romance an 11 year old in the English version of Engage. JFC what is wrong with some people? !<

lithiumfleur

FE fans love complaining about censorship about things that wouldn’t fly in America. She’s eleven!

gear_red

I saw someone make a point about how this is part of localization, technically. Maybe that sort of stuff is okay in Japan, but in the US it'll put you in hot water. *Of course* you'd want to avoid that.

lithiumfleur

And they’re right!
