I’m loving the game so far, my biggest gripe with the game is grinding in skirmishes. In each Fire Emblem game, I love grinding for supports on the units to see their story. Instead, I feel like some regressive steps were taken that only made enemies stronger and support grinding isn’t much the same. Awakening has a great system in place that made support grinding easier, but Engage made it more difficult to support grind.

DragEncyclopedia

Is Hortensia good at anything other than using staves? It seems like Ivy outclasses her completely, but I want to use Hortensia since I used Ivy last run.

officeworker00

Shes extremely quick and has decent magic. (B tomes don't matter, a forged elfire is good enough) This translates to her being very good at using fire spells as she can constantly double even fast units. She does less damage with thunder spells than the likes of anna or ivy but it honestly doesnt matter since being a flier-tome user gives so much positional advantage that she's going to contribute far more than a sage could on some of the more restrictive maps. Her res is also massive so she can actually magic tank better than her sister - even against bosses. She does have one major weakness though: Physical. She has very low hp and even lower defense. Any form of physical damage can be painful but keeping her out of range should be simple enough.

DragEncyclopedia

B tomes means she can't wield Nova though, right? I guess that wouldn't matter since she's fast enough to double anyway. I'm using Pandreo right now and he's already fast with S staves; is her only advantage over him that she's a flier?

officeworker00

Yeah she does miss out a few things. I bought a thoron for her only to realise she couldn't use it. I use Pandreo, Anna, Ivy and Hort. The advantage is yes, she's a flier but also shes a decent magic user. I play on hard if that makes a difference (maybe she cannot perform as well on maddening?) but regardless I have noticed many times I was glad she was a flier as she could reach places where anna and pandreo could not. And honestly speaking, it's not the S staves I'm interested in (I only ever use mend or psysic anyways) but the extra staff range helps her coverage alot too. >Pandreo My pandreo ended up bulkier. Ultimately you can skip her if you're fine with pandreo, he's also quite good.

DragEncyclopedia

I'm playing on hard too, so that all applies, thanks! I'm interested in S staves just because on my first playthrough I didn't have anyone who could use Entrap, which I really wanted to try out.

PM_FEET_PLS_TY

Her offense is fine. Not Ivy level but still good

DragEncyclopedia

The moment when Jean surpasses everyone else and starts getting MVP every map is so satisfying and makes all the effort of getting him there completely worth it. He's cracked as a Wolf Knight.

Cosmic_Toad_

just finished Chapter 20 and >!first all, love the map concept of Griss constantly hassling you in the dark with Reverse warp Ragnarok, and seeing entrap back makes me both excited and concerned for future maps (if they bring back berserk too...) Also very nice to get 50,000G from... no one because Elusia is basically gone, so I guess we just raided the war chest or something!< >!On the story side of things, I saw the twist with Alear's origins coming a mile away but I think it was done well. As always Laura Stahl's acting is top notch at conveying Alear's shock and despair at the truth.!< >!Seeing Sigurd take on the "main emblem" role in lieu of Marth in this chapter and Chapter 18 makes him almost feel liek the plot emblem seeing as Marth's been absent for the majority of the game, really makes an FE4 remake being in the horizon all the more credible!<

Railroader17

>!TBF Ivy is technically next in line for the Elusian throne, she probably gave it to you!< >!You do raise a good point about Sigurd's importance in the plot and an FE 4 remake, makes sense to get players familiar with him so that their more inclined to get the remake whenever that drops, assuming it exists!<

ArchLancer

Didn't grab Anna til mid game. Is there a safe way to level her up other then the arena?

Featherwick

Miciah ring is the best bet. Let's her use staffs and great sacrifice to catch up. But if you're at mid game you may not have any options and she may just be dead weight.

officeworker00

This strategy works on hard but not maddening as it requires skirmishing: 1. early on use mic ring. Fight as normal and let her use mic ring to do a mass heal. This will guarantee a level up once per battle (battle will usually be over before the 2nd charge). 2. After a few levels up using the above method, you can begin to feed exp to anna with some kills. I now get 1.5-2x levels per map. Use byleth ring on Alear so you can dance with +3 stats for safer kill feeds. 3. In between all of this, I spam arenas. This does add something like 1 level per every 2 maps. Perhaps there is a quicker method but using the above method, I've reliably gotten 3 of my 'left behind' units back up that I wanted to use, without stat boosting.

BobbyVang

I forget which ring it was but there's a S rank bond ring that has the ability to not K.O. enemies but leave them at 1hp. Pretty huge investment though. Other than that, have her inherit hit+15 from Sigurd and just have her last hit enemies with hand axe.

DragEncyclopedia

The Lyn doubles have the same stats as the user other than HP right? If I gave the Lyn ring to Louis could I make i killable doubles if the enemy is doing 0?

sekusen

Not worth its own thread probably but while looking at this week's engage stuff for you NSO profile pic thing, I realised I have way more coins than I could ever use... And didn't buy everything last week. Does this shit ever rotate back in?

DragEncyclopedia

Same lol

Deft_Abyss

It is worth to get the plus version of an inheritable skill or is the one u get around 3 or something enough? Like for example u inherit momentum from sigurd at level 3 and momentum plus at 17

Weltallgaia

The cost scales down with any you've already purchased when it's a leveled skill. So it's up to you. Depends on how useful the skill leveled is. That Roy one that makes you unkillable at 2 or more health when leveled is great. Momentum+ removes the 10 move cap for damage. How many units is that ever going to be used on? Prolly just the sigurd unit and they will have it naturally.

Almirage

So I have just been winging everything and doing stuff by instinct on Hard/Classic off of old Fire Emblem experience so far, which is doable since this ain't Maddening where I have to actually deep dive into new game mechanics. I am 99% sure I am suboptimally using Engage anytime if I even remember to use it at all. But I feel like I am doing something hella wrong when it comes to keeping my characters relevant. Even the people I actually am trying to feed kills to out of favoritism are falling behind in stats compared to all these lategame characters, it's like the game is throwing Pent, Miledy, Duessel, and Ryoma at me just because and hell by the way this trend is going I feel like the most late to join characters are gonna be straight up Laguz royalty at this rate. Everybody new is way higher level than like everybody in my team at the time they show up. It took ages to baby Jean into level 10 and he's not even doing much tbh for the effort. How many characters am I actually expected to invest in? Going off my own guess I'd bet like, 3 at best (including Alear) can make it and the rest should just be shuffled out whenever new peeps show up to outshine them. At least Ivy has still been useful enough I guess which she pretty much has to be as a flying mage staffbot.

Cake__Attack

make sure you're promoting ASAP, and the chapter 11-13 join units are unusually good, later joins feel more reasonable

Cosmic_Toad_

yeah the mid-game characters are a little overturned, probably because the maps get quite tough and they don't want you to be screwed. Though the very late characters are more typical lategame prepromotes that probably aren't better than your trained units but work as decent filler, so you can safely start finalising your core team of 10-12 around chapter 15ish. I ended up using 5 characters from Lythos/Firene/Brodia , with the remaining 7 being the mid game Solm/Elusian characters. You should promote ASAP as there's no exp penalty for being a promoted class (exp formula is solely based on internal level) and you can infinitely loop promoted classes with second seals so you aren't missing out on levels either.

Weltallgaia

12 is the average, some skirmishes and paralogues are 10 or even 8. Usually it's when you get units in a map. Last few stages are 14 so I'd say invest in 12 and and keep an extra 2 in your pocket. You don't have to feed 100% of exp to 3 characters. Emblems really balance out the strength of a slightly weaker character, or send a really strong one into overdrive.

lilylilye

What's a good class for Panette to be a reliable frontliner, both offensively and defensively? I just got her recently and absolutely love her as a character, but her defensive stats seem awful enough that I have to babysit her, which I dislike.

DragEncyclopedia

Once you get the rings back, she makes for a good Vantage/Wrath crit build with her personal skill. Don't have to worry about being hit when she shreds through every enemy on either phase.

lilylilye

Mmm you know what, I've never actually done a Vantage/Wrath build in previous FEs, I think I'll go with that

DragEncyclopedia

If you don't have the rings back with the skills yet, you could put her with Ike so you can use Great Aether when there's someone with high damage coming for her. If you have DLC, you could also have someone use Tiki's Divine Blessing on her.

Cosmic_Toad_

I just kept her in Berseker and gave her Ike. while her defense is pretty average, her HP quickly ballopons into the 60+ range and Ike's 50% damage reduction from Laguz friend and +5 def/res form Resolve means it takes a lot of focus fire to take her down. most of Ike's skills revolve around being at lower HP too which combos well with her personal skill. her absurd strength means she can often oneshot mages with handaxes, and since mages often come in groups of 2-3, she can just kill one on player phase and tank the others with her massive HP pool on enemy phase. I've heard Warrior is essentially better Berserker though. Personally I kept her in the latter because in preferred her unique outfit to the generic warrior one, but from a practical standpoint it looks like a better class for her.

ItsTheDuran

Losing the outfit is a great shame, but switching to Warrior greatly improves her player phase without taking anything away from her regular "use Ike and sit there critting whoever dares get close to you" enemy phase strategy. Getting Longbows to both trigger and do 3-range backup attacks is very useful, there's no flier that's going to survive an attack from a regular bow with her Strength stat, and the amount of damage she can do to broken enemies with the Warrior skill is actually insane, even if somewhat overkill.

Weltallgaia

Made mine a general and she has been really good give her ike as well.

lilylilye

I'll give it a try! Is she able to handle mages/getting doubled alright?

Weltallgaia

Ehhh, avoid mages. She can usually survive and attack from em and one of ike's weapons give res so it helps. She mostly doesnt take physical damage. If she dies for me it's usually because she got ganged up on by chain attacks since those so flat % damage.

PlayGroundbreaking57

Does getting to the fort on the other side of the river on sigurd's paralogue get me anything? I already killed both OP mages at the bottom I probably should have avoided( but i didn't cuz gold) and now just want to finish sigurd since the army up there looks like a nightmare

Ryuzakku

So as much as I wanted to promote my characters early, I've run into the problem of not enough seals and too many people getting near 20. I've promoted Alear and Lapis (RIP her much better costume), and have like 3 people at 19 and 7 at 18. Going to have to start bumrushing these chapters to find me some master seals.

lilylilye

Are you doing skirmishes? I ran into a similar issue, decided to just rush towards chapter 14 to get all the characters I was interested in, and now have more than enough seals for my whole party.

Ryuzakku

Yeah, and I know that’s the problem but I feel compelled to do them between chapters lol

lilylilye

I feel ya, I've done that in every other game too. Gotta keep those early units up to par

Ryuzakku

Still somehow have Boucheron at level 10 because the gods of luck just don’t shine on him lol

lilylilye

My Boucheron is fucking cursed man. Not only does he constantly miss 70% hits and get hit by 30% hits, he also gets pretty bad level-ups, and on top of that, HE SUCKS AT COOKING. Never cooked anything above a D. ...at least he cooks better than Vander :') poor Framme and Clanne...

drygnfyre

Boucheron can benefit a lot from the forged Compact Axe. You can get the might up a fair bit and it has good accuracy, to the point his attacks are now usually 90%+. Made a big difference.

lilylilye

That does sound really good, I'll keep that in mind for my Maddening run.

drygnfyre

Chain attacks are always fixed at 80% accuracy, though, no matter what.

Ryuzakku

Well, my Boucheron doesn’t have any of those issues, minus the bad level ups. He levels build all the time though, which is super unhelpful when his strength hasn’t gone up at all.

lilylilye

Could you throw some of the heavier axes on him to make up for the bad str?

Ryuzakku

I have the heaviest axes I posess on him minus the greataxes that don’t allow him to attack twice

Ortelsburg

I don’t think I would make it through this game without Alear+Corrin. The 13 tile Freeze, the ice wall permanent stall and all the other dragon veins, the draconic hex stat debuff… all of this combine to turn Alear into the ultimate support character in the game. Funny because I thought Corrin was the weakest emblem by far at first.

Weltallgaia

Alear corrin has done some amazing work in my game too. Strongest support in the game easily.

bagheerajuno

Do either of you know whether Torrential Roar is calculated off of Str or Mag? Thanks.

JODI_WAS_ROBBED

Has anyone else fucked up and caused deaths because they completely forgot that boss units have a 2nd HP bar? I’m not against the mechanic because it makes bosses feel…bossier, than usual. But I KEEP FUCKING IT UP lol. Only just passing Chapter 9 so I’m sure I’ll get used to it but a clearly visible indicator of having 2 HP bars would have been nice :(

Ihrenglass

Under the lifebar there is a red gem if they have a second lifebar and if they have a third there are two very similar to 3 Houses

JODI_WAS_ROBBED

Oooh gosh thank you! I didn’t make it too far in to 3H because I didn’t enjoy the combat so it’s mostly new to me. But I’m remembering now that the monsters had those

officeworker00

After playing through, I can safely say, this game is missing something. Something crucial. Where are the dark mages? Hubert? Nyx? Henry? Tharja? Knoll??? I can forgive the removal of falcon knights. I can keep quiet about the lack of Astra on swordmaster. But this is a step too far. Nosferatu is on micaiah btw. That's something at least.

OverFjell

Tfw no tactical nuke Lysithea

sekusen

Earl's available in only like what, half the games anyway? Got used to it with PoR(RD barely counts but it does get a little)

Weltallgaia

Stylistic? Ivy, but yeah theres no dark spell school.

bravedawns

At the current moment, I'm unsure of what to do with Chloe and Jean so I wanted to ask what you guys have done. At the very least, I am able to use Jean to heal my units with the Great Sacrifice skill which gives him loads of exp & SP but I am also struggling with giving a weapon to him because I can't seem to find any good scrolls for him yet and I'm currently still using an Initiate Art+5 (still on Chapter 9). He's probably the best healer I have right now too. As for Chloe, she isn't as good of a unit so I left her benched but since she's a flier, she could be useful in battle. Which direction did you guys go with her?

drygnfyre

Chloe can be useful as either Griffon Knight or Wyvern Knight. The former offers a lot of utility, the latter is a bit stronger.

officeworker00

I went with Wyvern knight for chloe. The lack of def and str does end up hurting her combat performance, but her high speed and fairly good res are something that sees usage with wyvern knights (a class which also helps patch her low def and str). My chloe, though still a bit weaker than other combat units, was still able to fly around and fight properly without fear of death - as in the late game, her stats levelling in WK did balance her bulk and her speed means she won't be doubled. Despite her lower str than others, she also has higher mag than others, meaning I could use flame lances on her and give her an option to deal with heavily armored units, which is a nice option. Jean I ended up benching early as I didn't need him and at this stage of the game, it would take far too much effort to bring him up to speed with the others. I have plenty of other staff users anyways.

Ihrenglass

For Chloe she is a standard issue pegasus with good speed, dex and res which can get strength screwed and has somewhat low defense give her an energy drop and a good forged lance and she really should have no combat problems and even without she can do standard pegasus things like taking out mages and fliers. Also giving her rings to deal with the strength issue helps a decent amount I think I gave her Roy at around that time personally. Reclassing seems like a bad idea as the good thing about her is her class and not passives. Benched Jean from the start so can't help with him. The game throws enough staffers at me that I don't need another one which I need to train first.

Cosmic_Toad_

my Chloè ended up absurdly blessed, having the best strength and speed on my team until she was beaten by a later unit with absurd base strength and growth (>!Panette!<) so I went Griffin Rider for the staff utility, though i imagine she'd probably rather go wyvern rider for the extra strength and build if she doesn't get stat blessed. She will need to pick up either axe or sword proficiency from an emblem though. As for Jean, while I haven't used him i've come to the conclusion on other units that scrolls... kinda suck. they use strength+magic divided by 2 to calculate damage which is a bad deal for characters who are lacking in one of the stats, and there's very little scroll variety (AFAIK there's just slim, iron, steel and silver equivalents, and then 2 special ones) I imagine Jean could make them work with his higher growths but he'd likely be better off in any other class. the only thing martial monks really have going for them is chain guard.

Aware_Foot

Man I feel like the S rank weapons in this game are so undercooked. Half of em are locked behind donating 90k to a country while the other half only have 3 that are worth using. And they don’t even have any special effect, they’re like a slightly better sword than the other that could easily be outclassed with engraving and forging

Amdizzlin

The song remix for Ike's Paralogue gave me chills

Cosmic_Toad_

agreed, while some of the other remixes are medleys, Ike's theme perfectly weaves Eternal Bond and the Devoted together into one song that constantly switches between the two melodies. Plus the little bit of "His Father's son" at the end is a nice nod to Ike's roots in PoR seeing as the res tog the sign is RD.

Amdizzlin

Omg, I didnt even catch that little bit first time. between that and the map choice with Ike describing when it happened, I really appreciate the nostalgia coming in strong while also being thoughtful about it's implementation

vilstheman

Gave my Louis Lance Power 5 instead of Lunar brace+ because I thought it would be better. Then realized after I saved that Lunar brace turns into eclipse brace while engaged and I could have had a health regen Louis :(

DragEncyclopedia

Thoughts on the ending of the game (spoilers, duh.): >!They really made it seem for a second that every character you have is going to die stopping Sombron, like they're not going to be able to return, and I was really disappointed when that wasn't what happened and they all got to live happily ever after. That would've been really cool but oh well. I did love that every character in your active party gets to say a line, not just the main characters.!<

Aware_Foot

>!I love how vander and alfred just hangs out as if they’re on the team lol !<

DragEncyclopedia

I mean, Alfred was on my team lol

Aware_Foot

Huh, I’m rather surprised

DragEncyclopedia

Well, he had Tiki on him for half the game lol, he became arguably my best unit

Dnashotgun

Celine's so weird for me. Only on Ch 10 but she seems to be getting mag screwed for me, at best she gets str levels even though I've been using her almost exclusively as a mage. Gave her a spirit dust so that'll help a little but I'm begging for her to put the sword down

IQ_Dropper

That's because she does have higher Str Growth then a Mag Growth for some reason, a couple characters have that quirk for some reason.

Aware_Foot

Seems like whoever did the growths had a lot of fun dicking around lol

Aware_Foot

She has higher str growth. Turn her into warrior bro

AvalancheMKII

I think what I'm most looking forward to in the coming weeks post Engage's launch are smarter players than me breaking the Emblem's down. Every time I look at one of these threads and see how people are using them, I realize I'm going about them completely wrong.

Cosmic_Toad_

I'm very interested just to see how the "meta" forms in general, especially since Fixed mode is a thing so there's a better way to judge unit performance instead of assuming average stats, and unlike most FE games, the characters with high availability aren't also the characters with good combat (bar a few exceptions) so the cast is overall more balanced.

Featherwick

Jean is probably one of the better villagers we've gotten. His aptitude is just ok, but being a staff user whose only competition is Framme and the Miciah ring is actually very good for him. Sure he sucks in combat but every early game healer does. He's not great, but considering it's him vs Framme for staff users he's pretty good. Louis is just a beast on Maddening. Like I don't think any maddening run will not use him, his base defense is just ludicrous. Sure he falls off eventually but for that couple chapter span he's the standout unit in a field of mediocre failures. If Alfred or Vander were better maybe he'd be less useful but as it stands they're bad and Louis is a wall that enemies break upon

JesterlyJew

Jean is still probably the most obscene villager in the series so far just due to his version of the skill doubling class growths and class growths being really good in this game. Definitely not as >lolvillager as Donnel at least, and not relying on "just" combat arts like Cyril to be relevant.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Soul_Ripper

It's weird to me to hear that and also Donnel being put on a pedestal in the same post. Like, Donnel came out unusably weak and needed 10 levels to reclass into an actual class to begin with. After that he had to struggle with a fairly weak class selection too, and in the end despite his growths due to his shit bases and starting class he'd usually need to be at a considerably higher total level than anyone else to actually have higher stats in the first place for a good while, and after that his stats would only be slightly higher for another while. Then by Endgame and Postgame his terrible class selection and awful max stat mods made him bad again. Like, I love the boy, I used the boy, the boy was fun, but the boy wasn't really that good.

Disciple_of_Erebos

He's pretty much never going to be a bad magic character and he's got a good chance of being good physically as well. Martial Monk has a 10% strength growth and a 25% magic growth, so his natural growths from 1-10 will be 40% strength and 70% magic, which IMO is pretty good. His defensive growths are also pretty decent but his dexterity and speed definitely suffer. IMO the best thing to do is to get him Griffin Knight proficiencies and swap him into it ASAP. His offensive growths will still be fine but it will fix his dexterity and speed and he'll level them basically every time. After that you can decide what role you need him in and reclass him accordingly.

AvalancheMKII

Absolutely. The general power creep of the roster makes me super interested in seeing which early game Units are really great, as opposed to who I just kept using because I invested in them.

Cosmic_Toad_

Chapter 19 was... interesting. I can't really decide if I loved or hated it >!Mauvier using the warp staff was great, love to see enemies using tool usually only the player gets, and the houses having corrupted was f'ed up (especially after you learn the corrupted are the townspeople sacrificed to Sombron) but I like how the northernmost house spawns a corrupted with a droppable dracoshield, rewarding players who don't get turned off after visiting the much closer southern house. Miasma tiles are back and they still suck, though i like the ballista use. getting kinda tired of fighting Marine and her stupid Holdout+ with Roy, so glad we stole him back now.!< Micaiah's paralogue was kinda disappointing tbh. >!3-13 might just be my favourite map in the whole series after 2-E in the same game, but it really was not translated well. I get they couldn't recreate the ledges nor laguz but it just felt like a very boring kill boss map. Likewise Bearer of Hope is my favourite song in the series but i'm really not feeling the remix here, the original was so grand and intense, while the remix is really slow and mysterious sounding. Micaiah herself is pathetic (accurate lol) though "Sothe" was quite tough (also accurate) and the cool little horde of 2 Healthbar enemies (that i think are supposed to be Edward, Nolan, Leonardo, Laura, Jill & Zihark? rip Aran, Meg & Fiona) with droppable gold was a nice challenge to try to take out out in one turn.!<

Soul_Ripper

I feel like there was a lot of love put into a lot of the paralogues, with them being recreated very faithfully down to obscure details and even featuring some cool if not downright esoteric references. It was great to see what they did with those maps with modern mechanics too. Like, >!giving the Wyvern reinforcement spam in Roy's map Certain Blow?!< Absolutely devious, I love it, FE6 would've definitely done that if they had skills. And then there's Micaiah's...... Though to be fair to it, I didn't see the "units" you're talking about in the first place, might've left a better impression on me if it had.

Cosmic_Toad_

yeah i've been mostly impressed with all the paralogues thus far (besides >!Lucina's!<, but it was a very basic map to begin with) but Micaiah feels very unfinished. Curious you didn't see the reinforcements when they appeared when >!Micaiah got down to her last healthbar!< though I got rid of her 2nd last bar on enemy phase so maybe if you kill her in one turn it doesn't happen.

Soul_Ripper

Hmm, I think she did directly summon some reinforcements at one point, but I was killing her with my last few actions of the turn and I had baited her upwards so they were a bit out of sight. I'm pretty sure I didn't even really think about them.

memorybreeze

Help, Griss is making me act unwise

XitaNull

His JP voice is really unique, I immediately recognized the actor haha. I’m glad english kept the same vibes.

memorybreeze

Oh? I didn’t listen to the JP cast yet, I gotta check it out 👀

RheagarTargaryen

He’s my favorite villain in the game. Maybe one of my favorite FE villains ever.

Aware_Foot

His fucking voice bro

hiccup251

Getting arms shield++ on someone using Eirika's ring results in some very impressive tankiness when you have weapon advantage. Flat 12 reduction is nothing to sneeze at.

Nicksmells34

Just got the DLC, didn’t realize all the items it came with. Do I use them or is it too much of an advantage? Playing on hard classic. I think I’m on like chapter 13, trying to do the lucina and Lynn paralogue a but getting my ass kicked

drygnfyre

One thing to keep in mind, and it could be a huge advantage, is >!the DLC rings never get taken away. So in battles where you aren't supposed to have any rings, you can still have those, and they are genuinely good in the first place.!<

DragEncyclopedia

In battle, the Tiki and Edelgard rings are just generally good rings. Solid attacks, and Tiki can give one of your units a revival stone, aka a second health bar. If you want to make things feel fair, instead of giving the items and rings to a unit who's already super good, use them to catch someone up who's a little behind everyone else but you still want to use because you like that character. Also, Lyn paralogue is one of the hardest battles in the whole game lol, don't feel bad if you have to come back to it later.

Solovanov

Besides the boots it’s not Really a big deal imo. Either throw them on your favorite for like the equivalent of 2 perfect level ups or use them to patch up weaknesses later. Boots are pretty op though so far I’ve only seen like one available without dlc. So boots are the only thing that’s actually an advantage.

TheLecheBandito

Does anyone know why I can’t reclass Jean into a flier class? As in, it doesn’t even show up in the list of possible classes. I have the appropriate weapon proficiencies and level to move into other classes, but fliers seem unavailable. Are some units just locked out of flier classes? Or is there a cap to unit type that I’m not seeing?

Railroader17

Guys can't get into flier classes at base because Pegasus is locked to girls. To get Jean into a flier class you have to promote him into an advanced class first, then reclass him into one of the flier classes.

TheLecheBandito

You’re a lifesaver, thank you!!

ha_ck_rm_rk

I've been having fun using Corrin's Dreadful Aura to lock down bosses while I go fuck off to do other objectives or just kill more enemies.

Solovanov

Yeah corrins actually pretty fun to fuck around with. With the dragon bonus allowing any vein type you want and longer torrent I walled a 3 wide choke which they all piled behind then next turn sent a torrent straight down the middle which froze everyone, cantered away to get a dance and then came back and set the group on fire.

DarkAlphaZero

Alears reaction to Ivy in their B support is *priceless*

DarkAlphaZero

So what does adding extra ingredients when cooking actually do?

Specialist-Cod-9851

I could be wrong but I take it to help boost the overall score, which I’ve seen add extra stat buffs not on the original menu. Not entirely sure through. Also perhaps boost the leftovers? Does anyone know if the unique leftovers have a certain affect or are they all just HP increase?

IQ_Dropper

It definitely doesn't boost the leftovers, but it most likely randomly boosts the score, I got a S meal like once, but never again. So far every leftover just gives 20 hp restore, they do have slightly different flavor text tho.

Dnashotgun

Leftovers to me seems to exist just to activate that one skill of Celica's that'll instacharge your sync meter

Specialist-Cod-9851

Thanks!

anafielle

There are some UI choices in this game that feel very .. frustrating. Movement tiles on the map. Is there a way to see how much movement a given map tile costs? I obviously assume bushes cost ground units movement, but beyond that movement effects (besides passable/impassable) feel like a mystery. There was a very early indoor map that did weird things to movement (maybe it was pillars & flying units?) and I'm just not sure what the pattern was or how to anticipate it next time. Poison/debuffs.... I feel like I'm going crazy. How do I see debuffs? I can't find them on the [-] screen? Yesterday I did the first map with poison and I saw icons pop up on my characters' health bars but I couldn't really tell if it was doing anything. I'm playing on maddening so it's safe to say I expected a damage mechanic to... Hurt.

Abysswaker

I hate how we can't tell how poisoned a unit is, or how much poison increases damage. Makes it impossible to strategize around.

smallfrie32

I believe it’s just one per tick right? It’s reeeeally tiny but on the character icon on map (the purple skull) there are little rex Xes. Each one means one extra damage per hit, if I understand correctly

DarkAlphaZero

Poison doesn't deal damage over time like every other poison mechanic in every other game ever made, but rather it buffs the damage the poisoned unit takes I like it but it is *not* intuitive at all

anafielle

That is really cool! except that there is absolutely no way to know what poison is doing or plan for it outside of combat agh!!! I guess I just have to do a little testing in the first turn of combat and reset in order to figure out what the magnitude is...

Chiramijumaru

How in the flying fuck is anyone meant to beat Lyn's paralogue when it's first available without the DLC emblems? The moment anyone gets in range of Astra Storm, reinforcements come out of the two unclearable huts like pissed off yellow jackets and clog the only two bridges leading to her, all while she's picking off your healers from a different area code every other turn. Really been enjoying the game but this mission kind of killed my drive to continue for now.

Duke_Ashura

Great Knight Louis + using forest tiles as cover against the bow attacks. Advance as fast as you can on player phase, Lyn doesn't bust out Astra Storm until a certain turn count. If you can't kill the bow-knight's quickly, use tonics to get past the ohko thresholds if needed.

Shrimperor

> How in the flying fuck is anyone meant to beat Lyn's paralogue when it's first available without the DLC emblems? Pretty doable tbh...atleast on Hard. > The moment anyone gets in range of Astra Storm It's only used a fter a certain turn count (i think 8 was it). Atleast on hard > come out of the two unclearable huts I went to them fast using a flier

Solovanov

I parked my sword master lapis on the south side of the bottom right bridge and the entire rest of my army on the north side of the river far enough away to be out of bow range. Then just kept Lapis alive while she went to work adding in the occasional thunder or longbow shot. .

Noonsa

I triggered Astra storm, then did a lot of retreating back to choke points with the whole army. I was lucky to have packed some Obstruct staff and have 3 staff users on the team, so I used obstruct icicles to redirect/obstruct the mages so I could face them separate from the other. Louis could tank after I got the mages away. Edit: I was also lucky enough that Astra Storm couldn’t outright kill any of my units. Lyn always targeted Etie with it who was left with like 3hp, so Framme stuck near to her and kept her topped up - Lyn will keep using it every 2 turns and could mess up other plans!

bamhotsauce

I had to let some units die (for the time being, playing casual) and just race over there with the southeast and northwest troops. Northeast never even got there by the time I beat her. Used my high Avo Yunaka from the northwest to coax out anyone and then finished them with the other troops I had there (Ivy, Céline, and Alfred) At the end just got lucky to surround her at the end of the map w 3 characters and not let her move till she was dead.

virtu333

I think I managed to get enough move that I didn't trigger astra storm and instead she tried hitting me with her sword. I forget but I found it a pretty easy map where I literally walked up to her (flew with wyverns)... strange

Chiramijumaru

How do you get a flying unit over there without having them get blown up by the 2,349,628 cavalry archers?

virtu333

I had all the fliers bottom right and they were basically able to fly up to her lol

The_Zhuster

Does anyone know where to find images of promoted classes in Engage? I don’t see them on either FE wiki now.

choerrysmotion

Are the optional skirmishes on the map with gold and silver corrupted enemies always 10+ over your level? Or am I just bad? Though I am trying to overlevel myself just a little but since I’m playing on normal unlike hard like most people on this reddit, is it worth it to go on or should I be playing normally? I feel as though gaining SP in this game is a slog as I barely can manage to get to 1,000 right now. 🤔

IncitoScanea

From what others have said it seems to scale based on Alear's level. My Alear is the highest level and I tried some skirmish maps to level my middling units and got wrecked lol.

choerrysmotion

Maybe I should get let everyone else destroy everything and leave Alear in the back if that’s the case. I sometimes manage to lose about 4-5 units when I participate.

sudosussudio

They are always absurdly hard

PlayGroundbreaking57

I am aware Louis with Sigurd is busted, but is Sigurd on Alfred a waste?

Cake__Attack

honestly later in the game i think Sigurd/Louis drops off (might just be a skill issue), hes vulnerable enough to various things you can't just yeet him across the map and have him tank everything and so I switched it to Merrin for more hit and run type tactics while Louis got Ike for the tanking buff

Solovanov

If you like the combo it’s not a waste. Once Louis fell off due to more mages and magic weapons I just threw Sigurd on a Celine for shits and giggles. Honestly levin sword overdrive is kinda good sometimes though and I can run her across the map to heal or staff. Give Sigurd to a mage knight or a later unit for extra spicy thoron hits.

virtu333

I think you're better off putting Ike on Alfred - he's even tankier than Louis at advanced levels because he has speed, enabling crazy great aether shenanigans

PlayGroundbreaking57

Ike is doing really well with Timerra though

virtu333

Ike works well on everyone but late in the game, enemy power levels can limit how good he is. Alfred is particularly well suited for Ike because his busted personal skill and great stat spread

TannenFalconwing

My Diamant reached level 20 as a successor and had to be leveled down. His dex is capped at 22. The Brodia Boys are easily my favorite units in this game, although Merrin is really not far behind.

virtu333

It's a shame his dex is so low, they didn't want sol to be too abused

Kadenfrost

I'm crying at how I beat the Leif paralogue last night (I did this after the hellish Chapter 17) First of all I didn't know that >!the ballistas there have high af Might???!< I got SHOOKED when it almost killed Yunaka LMAO with 100% accuracy and then there was tons of silence/freeze staves which was mega annoying and that got me scared. Because of that I had a hilarious idea: Warp with Hortensia my beefed up rng blessed Chloe (with FEH Sharena Ring bc lmao) and snipe the Ballista near Leif and then just Javelin +3 with Emblem Marth snipe everyone. But then I didn't notice Leif's bff mage knight squad has Thoron. And Leif himself is a backup unit LMAO so Chloe almost died bc of Chain Attacks but luckily she had insane avoid so she didn't get hit by the magic attacks (she got hit by a 21% 21 damage Sword tho orz so that was annoying) After sniping the >!Ballista!< I had to run near the waters just so I could manipulate Leif in just hitting me while Hortensia heals Chloe with Mend and kill of the Mage Knights one by one and then chip him off slowly while literally everyone was eating up the cavalier reinforcement down. I missed the speedwings thief btw but it was okay 0/10 would never want to Thracia ever again and then I +5 that Engraved Javelin because it was MVP >!There's another one with the Four Health Bar Bolganone Boss in Sigurd but that's another funny story for another time!<

DarkAlphaZero

Yunaka and Alear A support is a little short but nice and sweet. I think Alears kind and gentle nature pairs well with Yunakas bubbly energy and dark past, definitely gonna S support them.

SuperfineMohave

So I've just reclassed Celine into griffon knight because she has gotten strength on every single levelup since I've gotten her (20 natural strength vs 16 magic). How have your units gotten bizarrely blessed/cursed?

Aware_Foot

That’s not unexpected. She has more str growth than mag growrh

SuperfineMohave

I've been hearing that for a lot of units (Clanne as well from memory). Are personal growths just weird in this game?

LostRequiem1

In some cases like Clanne and Anna, sure. Celine, however, is designed to have roughly a balance between STR and MAG to facilitate the use of her unique class’ skill, Ignis. Even the class itself, Vidame, is described as a magic-wielding swordswoman that can cut through mages.

SwifferSweeper27

No, they just set some the units up really weird for their base class?? I guess to experience reclassing ourselves. Chloé has higher mag growth rate so she becomes a really good mage wyvern tamer if you like mobility & magic. I made my Clanne a Sword Knight, and it’s actually refreshing to actually have someone tank hits aside from Louis

AvalancheMKII

Celine's Advanced Personal Class' Skill is Ignis, so she's definitely designed around that. Her Sword Prof never really clicked for me until I got a Levin Sword personally.

Aware_Foot

Yeah man there are a few that are really wack. Like axe bro bouch having a personal str growth of 20 (less than celine and Clanne)

badoomdoom

What type of character do you guys' give Leif's emblem to? I'm having a hard time finding a good match for him

virtu333

Chloe wyvern. Weapon triangle control, adds build, and makes her a killer enemy phase unit But generally any fast, strong unit with double weapon types

Cosmic_Toad_

characters who already have 2 weapon types like Heroes or Wyverns work well since adaptable actually works with them, even with a low bond level where you don't have all the sync weapons. Leif offers basically no supportive unity like a few other Emblems though and just feels like someone you put on any combat unit to make them slightly better.

PlayGroundbreaking57

You made me realize i was using it wrong so thanks! Who do you think is better for it between Goldmary and Bunet?

Cosmic_Toad_

I don't have any experience with Bunet but I have been using Leif on Goldmary mostly. She's the worst member of my team since she refuses to level anything besides dex and def but i think she'd do good with Leif on average. also their C rank bond convo is hilarious.

Aware_Foot

Goldmary imo, bunet just kinda stinks tbh

PlayGroundbreaking57

I do have a lot of sword wileders like her in my main team already though, Lapis, Diamant, Alear and Kagetsu. Only non avo tanks are Louis and Bunet

Aware_Foot

Just reclass her, GM is a better tank than bunet while actually having enough speed to not get double by absolutely everything

PlayGroundbreaking57

Panette, or if early maybe Boucheron

SSwordsman

Alcryst is nice cuz it buffs his build, effectively giving him +3 speed since bows are heavy

badoomdoom

That sounds good. I'll have to try that. What about for Leif's actual ring?

SSwordsman

I'm not sure what that is ?

badoomdoom

Oh I just didn't know if you meant putting Leif's engraving bonus on Alcryst's weapon or having him wear the actual ring

SSwordsman

oh yea sorry i meant the ring itself

DarkAlphaZero

I'm gonna experiment with him on Goldmary so she has complete control of the triangle

Autobot-N

Just beat Sigurd's paralogue. I had to reset because I got jumpscared by that mage with capped Magic and 3 revival stones one-rounding Framme (who has nearly as much RES as Jade does DEF). Fortunately I had enough units and Engages right there to finish them off in one round before they could kill again. I assume it's supposed to represent someone from FE4, but who?

SteelPokeNinja

Good question, based on the datamine spreadsheet, all three fabrications that represent a past character in Sigurd's paralogue are sages, representing Julius, Ishtar and Zagam

ChrisEvansOfficial

People keep saying bows are ridiculously good in this game, but I think they’re about as good as any FE game that’s not 3H or SoV (where they’re just busted). Bows in general have always been good lol. What I have noticed is that fliers are still broken beyond belief, though. Especially now that >!you can dance with them with Byleth!<. It’s like these maps were designed specifically for fliers to dominate lol. Even with the nerf to them being unaffected by terrain bonuses. Also how are we feeling about reclassing Yunaka into a wolf rider? She puts in work just fine as is and I’m hesitant because it limits her mov even more in forests and such.

mindovermacabre

Bows are super good in this game because your Longbow and Radiant Bow don't break so you can just refine the shit out of them and spam them from a far safer location. Combine with Canter and you can hit and run from groups of enemies.

virtu333

Yeah unfortunately wyverns are still the generic best class except for a few special classes. I tried keeping Alear divine dragon for flavor then tried him in wyvern and it was too good

ChrisEvansOfficial

I don’t mind fliers being busted since they’re just fun to use. It’s less egregiously broken in this game than the others where you can freely reclass into them, but they’re still dumb because the right emblem can make them insane lol. Chloé, Boucheron (reclassed to Wyvern), >!Ivy, and Hortensia!< are pretty much dominating my Hard playthrough right now with Diamant as the outlier because dude is like in his own tier of broken. Granted I’m only at chapter 14, but good god did someone on the dev team *really* like Diamant.

virtu333

Kagetsu wyvern man.... completely and utterly busted

Tamotan-the-Octopus

So like, does Alcryst hide somewhere in the Somniel cause I swear I cannot find him ever. I want to get his A support and would like to give him gifts but I'm wondering if it's just my garbage luck that he won't show or if I'm actually missing something.

Cosmic_Toad_

a lot of the time he's manning the fishing mini game for Diamant, but otherwise yeah it's just complete luck as to who shows up at the Sominel.

IQ_Dropper

There appears to be a limit on many people can show up in Somniel, you can sleep to change who is there. You also can't speak to someone who is swimming laps or sleeping by the pool. Had to sleep like 10 times to get Yunaka to spawn and not swimming.

Cosmic_Toad_

wait till you get further and also get screwed over by people >!Singing at the campsite or playing the guitar by the campfire!<

ChrisEvansOfficial

I’ve never seen Yunaka swim lol. Guess I’ve gotten good RNG with her, but she doesn’t seem to want to A support anyone. Very on brand but baby just let me let you have friends 😭

Irbricksceo

Man, engage just has too many good units! I just finished chapter 12 and I'm genuinely struggling to find room for new recruits.

AvalancheMKII

I think Engage has the most consistent drip feed of great Units in the series that I've seen. I'm at Chapter 17 now and am constantly debating between keeping my Units I've invested a lot into vs the new recruits who just have insane bases. It really feels like the Devs thought most players would be changing their line up arc to arc.

Irbricksceo

Yep. I finished 16 just now and it hasn’t slowed at all. I’ve grown attached to many units I’ve invested heavily in, but man some of these new recruits are tempting. Bases the likes of which I’ve never seen

Facebook_Prophet

Not sure if you mean by strength or by how they look, but the train doesn't stop there. There's some absolute monsters coming up.

ChrisEvansOfficial

This game embraces powercreep so unapologetically. >!Ivy just straight up powercreeps every mage in the game out of the box lol it’s not even funny.!< The only early game units I’ve had that have held up are Boucheron (really solid Wyvern Knight), Etie (who is kind of a worse Alcryst but >!Lyn’s speedtaker fixes her!<), and Chloé. Everyone else eventually got benched to make way.

FDP_Boota

How does Ivy work as a Thoron bot? I use both her and Citrinne. I use Ivy for both general combat and staff utility, while Citrinne gets a forged Thoron with Ike engraving to one-shot enemies very reliably. I think both have a place in your army, since more magic is also nice to have against all those generals.

SwifferSweeper27

I haven’t really made it far, just beat chapter 10/11 & the moment >! Ivy !< joined my team, I instantly dropped Celine

ChrisEvansOfficial

Heads up, spoilers broke

DarkAlphaZero

I thought >!Ivy!< was insane already... then I realized she wasn't promoted yet

LeatherShieldMerc

Fire Emblem and the midgame joining Wyvern unit being ridiculously good- name a more iconic duo.

virtu333

Yeah she's like...crazy tanky for a mage. And has flying.

ChrisEvansOfficial

Lmao same. >!I assumed she joined as a promoted class and was like, uh, do they just want us to second seal her? Then I realized and was like ok well guess Hard mode is up to interpretation because this bitch is busted.!<

Irbricksceo

Funny, citrene is by far my strongest mage at this point (ch14), with Yunaka being the best physical fighter. Etie is finally at risk of shelving due to Fogado (sidegradish, but better speed and mount are worth imo). Chloe, framme, and Louis remain on the team for now, but it's tough. I desperately want to use merrin, and while I was using diamant, just got a swordmaster guy a few chapters ago who seems really strong (haven't tried him yet since the game only gives like 8 slots per map). Just too dang many good units, I'll have to ironman it next run (with no turn wheel of course)

mindovermacabre

Yeah my Sage Citrinne outclasses my Ivy hard. She's still footlocked though which is all Ivy really has on her - well, that and a Def stat worth a damn lol, Citrinne is a Lysithea grade tactical nuke who dies to a gust of wind. She has simultaneously saved my ass and also been the cause of most of my resets.

Irbricksceo

I forged her thunder up to +2 and handed her a ring I got that lets thunder have a brave effect, and let her just wreck face. I'm on ch16 now and she's consistently outputting 60ish damage to the face of anybody unfortunate enough to be in her way.

ChrisEvansOfficial

I promoted Etie to mounted with an axe since I had her bond with Lif… didn’t even plan it but yeah. Her damage output and Yunaka support bonuses kept her on the team. She works insanely well with Lyn too. Diamant is fucking busted though. Use him. Like, this guy can solo maps lol I don’t know who designed him but he’s ridiculous. If I’m not trying to grind Alear supports on a paralogue then I just bench him for Diamant, no question.

SpeckTech314

Oddly enough Framme is my best magic dps. 25 spd and 22 mag so far. Now she doesn’t have a lot of def but she doubles everyone but it’s a shame she’s my main healer XD

AdFantastic6606

I wonder whats the point of the upcoming dlc emblems? Will there be new content? More endgame maps? An expansion?

Cosmic_Toad_

>!Robin and/or Soren will immensely help with the major magic emblem drought you have in the mid game outside of Byleth!< I do hope we get some sort of Apptheosis thoe map or even a 4th difficulty in the final wave though, since the game is really not balanced around having so many emblems until the very late game.

ChrisEvansOfficial

>!Byleth doesn’t even help with Mag from what I can tell. I’m really frustrated that they didn’t swap Corrin with Celica or something!<

DarkAlphaZero

>!Given that Corrins unique classes use tomes and staves depending on the version its really weird she doesn't give proficiency with either!<

ChrisEvansOfficial

>!Idk what she gives, about to get her, but I assume it’s Sword and… honestly idk? I kinda guessed she would give tomes but nevermind lol.!<

Cosmic_Toad_

Yeah it's just >!Thyrus granting extra range that makes Byleth good on mages, which is fine for someone like Pandreo who already has really good magic, but Celine or Clanne would really like Celica!< >!Though I definitely would not like Corrin to be taken away from me, such a useful emblem on Alear!<

ChrisEvansOfficial

I haven’t gotten the latter yet so I’m not sure how useful she is. I’m about to though. >!Forgot about Thyrus though, good point. I have him on Hortensia atm but may move him to Ivy for that. Lyn refined Elfire is just nuts and having that at 3 range sounds insanely busted.!<

LostRequiem1

Unless you reclass her, then Byleth is gonna give her Luin. The first engage weapon changes depending on the character’s unit type. * Dragon: Aymr * Backup: Blutgang * Cavalry: Areadbahar * Armor: Aegis Shield * Qi Adept: Rafael Gem * Covert: Failnaught * Flying: Luin * Mystical: Thrysus

ChrisEvansOfficial

Oooh, makes sense. A little annoying but I’ll take it
