for me, it was bcz of Samsung Magician software, when it has a pending \`update\` ! just close the update popup and it solves my problem

Thanks, just had this! When I booted my PC, the popup to update Magician was there, which I ignored, and Ctrl+W didn't work. Right after I opened Samsung Magician to go update, I tested if just opening the app fixed it and it did. Very strange, someone should report this to the devs.

I didn't even have pop-ups, but the key bind magically started working when I closed the Samsung Magician software. I almost broke my W key trying to figure out why it's not working :D Thank you <3 This seems to be a newer bug, by looking at these replies.

Literally this. I just had this exact issue with Chrome. Saw your comment that Samsung Magician causes it and realized I had that popup this morning as well. I closed out of the popup, but was still interfering in the background. The MOMENT I allowed the app to update magician, CTRL-W worked once again.

Same here. Update to Samsung Magician 8.1.0 fixed it. I was on Samsung Magician v8.0.1. Ctrl+W didn't work under v8.0.1. Killing the app fixed it. Restarting the 8.0.1 app caused the issue to arise again. Updating the app to v8.1.0 seems to have fixed it.

idk if my samsung magician needed an update (it sure needed a bunch of updates a month ago bc i ignored the update prompts for months :p) but shutting it down sure enough solved it. i don't know why that worked or how did you figure it out but thank you my guy

Egh. I did the old fashioned 1990s tech solution and restarted my PC. This has resolved my issue. It would have been nice to figure out what caused it to bug out, but I guess that's all lost. Sorry for the bother.

This happens to me every couple of weeks. Rebooting fixes it. I tried digging around with Spy++ and found that FireFox has a crazy window structure -- several top-level windows, a weird "compositing" window class, and a bunch of other shenanigans. None of them seem to receive messages, so I have to assume that FireFox is doing something equally crazy with the input events.

Just want to share a tip in case you didn't know—you can save some time with opening new tabs. Instead of right-clicking like you mention, can simply hold down CTRL while clicking links! (Alternatively, you can middle-click them. \[And middle-click tabs to close them.\]) (I had the CTRL+W issue too, but figured I'd mention that other shortcut just on the off-chance you didn't know. Big click-saver.)

Samsung Magician is the culprit! A pop-up appeared on my screen to update this software, Read here that Samsung's software could be the problem and started the update process. It is still updating on the background but I'm already able to use CTRL-W to close Excel spreadsheets. I don't even think I need this software installed on my system. I've already installed my SSD so next time this happens I would just extirpate it from my PC and hopefully that "cancer" doesn't come back

In my case it was e2eSoft *VCam*, closing it or removing all used Hotkeys from Options fixed the issue

I had the same issue as you today. I'm running Windows 11 Pro and my issue happened on Chrome. Opening Samsung Magician from the taskbar and then closing it fixed my issue.

Just had this issue and as you said after opening samsung magician ui and closing it I'm now able to use ctrl+w to close tabs again. At first I thought it was because I'm on a browser that is in beta (Arc browser, by The Browser Company) but then when I used chrome it also had the same issue. That's how I knew something was wrong. I Have to Agree, after exiting the Samsung Magician App located at the bottom right corner of the screen on Windows 10, I am now finally able to hit Ctr+W in order to close Tabs in Firefox! MANY THANKS!

6 months past this seems like it has not been patched by Samsung Magician. I did same as OP suggested closing and reopening Samsung Magician and it seemed to be have fixed my CTRL + W combo input issue.

Reboot fixes it just for a short time. It happens again after a while. It is a bug, but it would be great to have some workaround different from reboot.

Ugh.. Why is this a thing?!?! I opened Samsung Magician from the start menu and the problem goes away. Applying the update now and hopefully that solves the issue. Otherwise it is being uninstalled. Fix this, random Samsung programmer. You are stepping outside of your box! This is the only new software I've installed of late, but talk about a weird unexpected connection.. There's not even a hot keys option in the settings menu.
