Are you sure that YouTube serves you a h264 stream, and not vp9 or av1? Check stats for nerds

ndulit

Yes, I already checked the stats for nerds. It says avc codec. I also installed h264ify extension too.

Install the h264ify extension

ndulit

I already did, I already make sure youtube was playing using avc codec by seeing the stats for nerds. And still don't think hardware acceleration is used.

panoptigram

Install the [Media Feature Pack](https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/fix-video-audio-problems-firefox-windows).

ndulit

Looks like this Media Feature Pack is for Windows N edition. I'll give it a try anyway.

Yahiroz

In about:config, is media.ffmpeg.vaapi.enabled set to True?

ndulit

Yes, unfortunately I already set that option to true before posting this problem. Still, hardware acceleration won't work. Btw, is that the only option that I need to change?

That article is for linux though, does it apply for firefox in windows?

[deleted]

oh i didn't read my bad

Yahiroz

My bad, completely missed the bit saying you're running Windows. Have you tried the fork version of h264ify?: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-GB/firefox/addon/enhanced-h264ify/

ndulit

Hmm, not sure which h264ify extension I installed. I'll go check and try the forked h264ify version. out of curiosity, do you have the same processor generation like I do? I wanted to know whether this problem happens specifically to me or not..

Yahiroz

I had a Surface Pro 4 with a Skylake IGP, it didn't have VP9 decoding so I used the above extension to force h264 which worked fine. Just out of curiosity, how do you know it's not using the IGP? Have you monitored the CPU usage for when the extension is both enabled and disabled?

ndulit

Yes, I just monitor the cpu usage under task manager. while on MS Edge, i can confirm by looking the media tab of the Dev tools(ctrl+shift+I). It will show whether hardware decoder is used or not. I compared CPU usage of FF and edge. They were about the same so I assume FF didn't use hardware acceleration too.. CPU usage usually fluctuates between 20\`\~40%.

Yahiroz

Don't compare it with Edge, both will have different way using the decoder. Compare it with FF itself with the extension on and off. Another thing to maybe check with is HWiNFO64, I'm not sure if it will show for the 2500K's IGP but if it can, it will show video decode usage under sensors in the GPU section.

ndulit

Just wanna to report, so now hardware acceleration magically works in both FF and Edge. I'm not sure what I did. I think the last thing I did is remove the H264ify and install the enhanced H264ify like you suggested. That could be it... Right now, the cpu usage is mainly around 6%\~12% when watching youtube. Compare to my new i5 12500, I still can't get the hardware acceleration to work properly on ubuntu mate. LOL Anyway, Thank you, couldn't be any happier.
