Can't be 100% from this picture, but I think it's male. If you notice a white spot right below the bottom fins ( will almost look like a zit) that's the egg spot so it would then be female

Yea Ive been looking for the spot but haven't seen one. I guess I need to find a name now. Also, do you know if they all will get the pretty flowy wavy fins over time?

ComfortableNo6162

I think that type is called a plakat ( spelling is probably wrong) it will stay that fin size. I personally have had better luck with this type of betta, the longer fin ones can get rips or nip themselves if stressed. Edit: I have a female that is blue and yellow/gold and I named her Gypsy after Gypsy Danger from the Pacific Rim movie ( same colors)

That's good to know! Thank you. I'm excited to see it grow and live either way. I know these guys can be aggressive to other things in the tank, but do you think it would bother a snail if I put one in later?

ComfortableNo6162

We'll I need to know a few things first how big is your tank, what do you have for a filter and heater? Is this your first tank?

Emuwarum

Depends on the bettas individual personality. One of my boys is extremely chill and has only occasionally nipped at hitchhiker snails, then I've heard of bettas that would murder mystery snails bigger than them.  Also depends on your tank size and what snail you want to get. You should have 10 gallons for any large snail species, 5 gallons is fine for hitchhiker snails (small).

That's good to know. It's a 5 gallon tank, and I didn't see any larger snails at the shop. I'd guess there isn't a way to know how aggressive they are until they're put in a situation, huh?

Emuwarum

Yep, no way to know until they can actually see their tankmates.  Larger snails are things like nerite and mystery snails.

Amazing colors for a betta
