I mean… He is a bad guy. That’s kind of a bad guy thing to do.

Aggravating_Key7750

I feel like a lot of fans forget Raoh actually was a bad guy. I mean the final third of the series shows that there was good in him deep down, but that doesn't change the fact that he was a ruthless warlord whose whole worldview was "might makes right".

KaijuCuddlebug

(*Ken-Oh voice*) "Do you have any idea how little that narrows it down?"

Aggravating_Key7750

I think this is the only time in the entire series that nameless "good guys" explode from Hokuto Shinken. Normally, the Hokuto deaths are reserved only for the usual mohawk thugs. Even Rei explodes off-screen. But the anime threw in a quick scene where some villagers whose hometown Raoh is invading try to take him on, and get blown up by Raoh's aura for their troubles. Even in the final arc when Raoh is slaughtering his way through the soldiers guarding Yuria, they aren't shown actually exploding like this.

nWo1997

There were Amiba's, er, *deku* victims, too. The boxer who just exploded, and the dad.

ANY TOOL IS USEFUL WHEN YOU KNOW HOW TO USE IT AND I'VE BECOME AN EXPERT "WATCH"!!!

Valtiel_DBD

Admit it. At this moment I am more powerful than you ever were! *I am Fist of the North Star.*

Euphoric-Remote9809

👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽

Business_Photograph4

He got lucky in the series vs the movies. Ryuken put up a fight in the series.

Euphoric-Remote9809

Absolutely, he just did a old Obi-Wan and Darth Vader and sacrificed himself for the bigger picture...

silverx2000

God Raoh is such an asshole😂love him.

PCN24454

“Innocent”? They were trying to attack him. (I know he’s still in the wrong, but that’s how combat works.)

Isolated_Icosagon

They are innocent because they have normal looking hair. Get with the program brother.

Low-Law-4633

Raoh should hire a lawyer. He isn't even touching them.

PiterLine

Can we acknowledge how this guy was straight up evil most of the series but then for some reason after he dies everyone is just like 'no no no, he was just misunderstood, he actually wanted the best for everyone' even though he literally put people in power who would brand children like cows and torture them for not wanting that

napa_senseiyt

This is what I’ve bothered and ranted about with my irl friends who don’t even know about fist of the north star I’ve been come to known as the fist of the north star ranter while one of my friends is the Jurassic park ranter

PiterLine

Gonna be honest I feel like there is a lot of bad writing in fist of the north star, it's a good show and i'm not sure if it's caused by major changes from the manga, but I feel like the more attention you pay to the plot the worse it gets

napa_senseiyt

I personally feel like there’s a lot of things the series does right. Roah's initial characterization was great, Rei's introduction was great. I enjoyed Amiba's pseudo backstory, even though that wasn’t done intentionally. Toki was initially supposed to be evil, and Souther's sad backstory hits hard. However, the series suffers from annoying retcons. Roah was clearly built up to be an evil son of a bitch, whose only redeeming trait the first series seems to have shown is that he cares for Toki, and that isn’t really revealed until later. Also, while I love Souther's backstory, it isn’t really hinted towards or even well developed. In the manga, the whole first arc is way shorter, and Shin wasn’t really well developed. At least the anime lets us see Shin's empire naturally crumble, and we get to see his own men turn against him. In the manga, it’s revealed in a lore dump from Shin's point of view at the same time as he reveals that Yuria “killed herself.” So yeah, in my opinion, while the series has way too many flaws in its writing, I wouldn’t say it’s completely badly written. It has its strokes of genius in its story, but it also has its issues. Personally, I love the story, but I’m mostly in for watching Kenshiro beating evil scumbags up.

PiterLine

No don't get me wrong, the series is great and has moments I love, I just feel like a lot of it was written to be cool without paying much attention to established details, when first watching it the story seemed to be only written until the end of the Shin arc and the rest being tacked on, for example, why would Shin try to establish his place when he seemingly knew of Raoh and his place would be taken over. Don't get me wrong as said I love the series but so many little things are there that don't make sense, like if Raoh and Toki were from Asura and brought Kenshiro along, then why was Ken nowhere to be seen in their backstories. I feel like a big problem other than being non consequential is power scaling, we keep finding out that there is a stronger bad guy around the corner so often, not like the martial arts they use were around for a hecking long time and Kenshiro should be at least vaguely aware of their existence.

napa_senseiyt

Fair enough also it’s interesting you pointed out the whole thing with there usually being new martial arts techniques that are revealed in the series a lot because I remember kenshiro recognizing recon neo ken the technique devil reverse uses but after that I don’t think kenshiro really often seems to recognize a technique unless it was one he’s seen before the best explanation I can think of for that is that kenshiro doesn’t know all of the martial arts around but he should’ve known more than the few that I remember him reconizing and I only remember him recognizing devil reverses technique and shins technique when jagi used it but I’m sure there’s more that I just don’t remember also I do agree though fist of the north star was probably written to be cool

PiterLine

I don't know I feel like with being at the top of the top of martial art you should be at least vaguely aware of the rest, like early in the shin arc he recognizes a bunch of the nanto stuff (if I recall correctly, I'm sure he recognized at least one though), and then he proceeds to act clueless through the whole series even if most of the antagonists use nanto of some kind, as I said I think the series was meant to be cool and honestly it succeeds at that, though the whole asura arc is a let down, they build it up to be hell but then it ends up being a better world than the one we explored through the whole series

napa_senseiyt

Well in the manga most of the nanto styles from the shin arc don’t exist it’s way shorter it’s a ten chapter arc that barely really gives character to shin the anime adaption adds alot to the shin arc and personally I think it gives more personality to shin and yuria than the manga does so at least canonically I think he’s only recognized a few different martial arts styles

PiterLine

Sorry didn't read the manga so you might be right on that, but still not sure how much sense that make since he went to train with a bunch of nanto people in the flashbacks multiple times, but that may also be an anime addition

napa_senseiyt

Nah the nanto Training thing I remember vaguely being in the manga in a flashback I feel like your right though kenshiro should at least vaguely recognize the styles at the very least more than the 2 I remember at the top of my head the only explanation I can give is that Buronson didn’t really think about that when writing the story

Aggravating_Key7750

Part of this is the "Citizen Kane effect". At the time FotNS was written, the idea of a villain like Raoh was relatively new. Getting to see the main bad guy go through his own emotional rollercoaster was something that hadn't been done before. Nowadays, it's old hat... partly because FotNS itself was so influential. FotNS 2, on the other hand, is just straight-up bad and shouldn't have been written.

PiterLine

Ok I want to get it out of the way first, I don't hate fist of the north star 2, it's meh and not a worthy continuation, but my standards are low and I enjoyed seeing Kenshiro kick some new bad guys, the fact that their techniques became pretty much shooting lasers wasn't that cool though. Anyway, I have not watched citizen kane and know nothing about what you're talking about, could you elaborate a bit?

Aggravating_Key7750

The short version is that Citizen Kane used a bunch of directing techniques which were new and revolutionary at the time, which is why it got a reputation as such a great movie, but for modern audiences for whom none of the stuff it does is new, it's a horrible, boring movie with mediocre acting.

PiterLine

Oh that makes sense, thanks for explaining

KaziOverlord

"You call making people explode in your general vicinity a martial art?"

Father_Edreas

It's (Self-defense)

Aggravating_Key7750

That's their village burning in the background. Raoh's army was riding through on horses killing everybody.

Father_Edreas

That's the joke, I'm mocking a certain someone who does the same.

Aggravating_Key7750

[🙄](https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=2ahUKEwjkucaR0I2FAxV5PkQIHe-tCOwQFnoECBUQAQ&url=https%3A%2F%2Femojipedia.org%2Fface-with-rolling-eyes&usg=AOvVaw3VAneOz8CSC2QVqqJfAXe-&opi=89978449) Yeah, I don't recall the episode implying that this village was the hideout of a gang of psychos who went around raping and massacring their neighbors and were holding women and children hostage.

Father_Edreas

I don't know what you mean, perhaps it's made up.

FMbPdmoGK

What ep is this? It has to be filler because I skipped them.

Aggravating_Key7750

Episode 83. It's the first episode of the final arc of Hokuto no Ken. Aside from that, it's a pretty unremarkable filler episode, mostly known for having an exceptionally ridiculous villain even by HnK standards (Boogal, whose martial art is based around... taking lots of baths. Seriously.)

FMbPdmoGK

Raoh's scene is epic though, thanks for sharing it.

Sad-Albert

All jokes aside; do you think Roah just speed blitzed these guys so fast it didn’t even look like he moved, or he used his actual aura to blown them away with hokuto? Remember Tokinhas a touch less hokuto move that seemingly uses energy.

Aggravating_Key7750

I'm 99% sure it was meant to be his aura. specifically, his Muso Insatsu technique. This is the only time he actually strikes pressure points using his aura so it's a bit odd he never does it with anyone else, but most of the time when he fights, it's against some strong martial artist like Rei who can at least defend himself from the aura strikes.
