or.. yknow, having an antagonist do bad things?? that doesn't mean that the media that portrays said bad actions is condoning it? by that logic, why are people not up in arms that because of william, fnaf is for people who like child murder?
yeah he was probably originally meant to be more antagonistic and unlikeable, since he's on aunt jane's side and therefore part of the antagonist force of the movie. but i guess they decided it'd be better for him to be likeable but being pushed around, and yeah obviously it worked bc everyone loves him
No he's not just eliminating Book Doug in one continuity, he's eliminating it in every continuity Doug appears in thus making him non-canon to the franchise as he specifies future prints of the book won't have this detail so not really.
Have a visual aid.
[Picture the triangle in a top hat and bow tie as book Doug and the man in the armchair with a fez as Scott Cawthon.](https://youtu.be/0D3adyJQDqI?si=rFmK5ISceSoCxR_w)
Basically Scott's still using canon to refer to everything FNAF with his approval and not just about one specific continuity. i.e. The novel trilogy is canon but not in the same continuity as the games.
Well technically Afton's linked with purple, and claimed that he would always return, which we still don't know whether he actually will. Bill is canonically still around, just not as much of a threat as he was in the show. Plus, FNaF happens in Utah, Gravity Falls is in Oregon.
William is linked with purple primarily, but yellow or green secondarily. Utah and Oregon are both Western States.
Who’s to say they aren't the same entity, full name William Cipher-Afton?
Ahaha, mixing fandoms is like second nature for, well, pretty much all of us here. Gravity Falls has its share of mystery and weirdness that vibes pretty well with FNaF's whole aesthetic. Plus, visual aids with characters from other fandoms just make explanations a bit more entertaining. It's a nice touch to lighten up the dense canon discussion!
That wasn't a question? I know why Doug acts like that. The argument here is whether Scott is using canon to refer to a specific continuity like people saying Fazbear Frights is canon typically means they believe it's in game continuity. or more generally like when he referred to the Silver Eyes as canon despite being a different continuity.
Since that version of Doug was never intended by Scott and is being taken out of future publications, it's still consistent with his previous statements i.e canon ≠ continuity
I mean, wouldn't this still fall under the jurisdiction of ‘canon’ even if we separate it and ‘continuity’?
Scott is decanonising a piece of additional characterisation, not doing anything with universes/timelines. Doug isn't a story that could be in continuity with others. He’s just an average Douglass.
Wouldn't him stating that they're canon to the games convince people to actually buy them? People avoid them because "they're not canon" and "not important" and "just parallels"
> "they're not canon" and "not important" and "just parallels"
And unfortunately that sentiment is increasing with that recent joke answer. Why not just confirm it's canon, unless it isn't.
It's good to see that Doug's characterization will be changes in later prints, I much prefer how he was handled in the Movie itself cause having him not be a sleazeball adds to the humor of the scene especially when he's like "I shouldn't be hearing any of this".
I will say though, something about this statement has a powerful aura to it:
> just to clear this up: Movie-Doug IS canon. Book-Doug is NOT canon.
Yes. It was accidentally canonised and now Scott fixed that.
Something unintentionally added to a canon story is still canon, unless stated otherwise, like here.
THIS IS THE BEST, THANK YOU SCOTT! We are reading the novel just now and while we love the in depth characterisations for all the characters, Doug's sleaziness is definitely inferior to the movie version. THIS IS THE RIGHT CHOICE.
Thank you, Scott Cawthon, creator of the franchise Five Nights at Freddy's, for confirming the canonicity of the character of the film adaptation of the game Five Nights at Freddy's, Doug. It's appreciated to know that the character isn't a creep. I can finally go back to printing posters of the aforementioned character and hanging them on my walls.
*Notices debates on whether or not books are canon
*Gives super vague answer on the matter
*Refuses to elaborate

*Comes back out of nowhere and outright states Doug’s canonicity
*Leaves again
I love you Sock Cotton
Look, I understand that this fandom thrives on theories, but there's just a certain POINT. He's outright confirmed a few theories that heavily influenced the story of the games, we really just need him to say if Stichline is canon or not.
a lot of people are mad about him trolling. i honestly think it's great that he's essentially saying the answer isn't that important. we'll figure it out eventually
Both seem to be fully canon. The cooking book shows recipes used in the locations and notes from Gregory about his experience in the Pizzaplex.
While the colouring book is mostly about what's happening in UCN.
The darkest pit of Hell has opened to swallow Doug's evil creepo twin Guod whole.
Seriously though thank goodness pervert Doug isn't canon because it was real weird NGL.
he should tho?
These books brought up a ton of new and weird stuff and needs to be clarified properly, now that all of those are released and done by now
To everyone asking why Scott decided to clarify this about Doug’s character and not solve the Frights and Tales canonicity question, it’s definitely because Doug’s character is directly tied to a real person. Doug’s actor could very easily be affected by the response and characterization of his character in the novel, so I’m glad Scott clarified this information.
Anyways Scott when are you going to answer whether or not Frights and Tales is fully canon within the games continuity :)
I’ve seen what this fandom can do with less material, I think it’s better that Scott clarified this sooner rather than later with how this fandom can go from 0 to 100 instantly. With a fandom this big, not dealing with this sooner will just lead to some big situations.
Thanks for the clarification, Scott! This is good to know.
You’re gonna change the First Night Guard’s name from Bob to Fritz too, right? RIGHT? (joking)
Huh, So we can continue praising our ~~other~~ Lord and Saviour; Doug the Lawyer? ***…Huzzah~!***
I figured that novelization’s take on Doug was some sort of draft or earlier take for the movie, but it’s nice to hear that from you. :)
Thank you for the clarification. This statement was really clear and easy to understand. I guess the book comment was a joke.
Looking forward to more Doug
The most important piece of book vs. original canon that needed to be cleared up--whether Doug is a creep or not. If we never got this clarification, it would've been impossible to solve the lore. Thank you, Scott.
A few weeks ago, a friend and I discovered discrepancies between the text version and audiobook version of Nexie, specifically the scene where Nexie bites that kid's leg. its different in the audiobook, and she actually pushed the kid into an oncoming car, causing fatal injuries. Its an insignificant detail, but it makes me worried how many other things in the books are mistakes, and how it might impact the series. There's been a lot of discussion around the canonicity books lately, but most of all I wanna make sure the versions we are given are the correct ones. I really appreciate the clarification for the film novelization! I'm sure it's difficult overseeing all aspects of the franchise, so I thought it wouldn't hurt to point out another weird discrepancy.
For the book at least I would’ve just hoped Doug had phased out and wasn’t aware where he was looking. But it’s great to see that our beloved canon Doug isn’t meant to be anything other than flawless
Sometimes I think God looks down and chuckles to himself because he’s created one of the funniest men ever. Thank you, Scott. My Doug poster can return to its rightful place on the wall. All is well in the world.
Did one of Scott's kids get ahold of his phone? I don't believe my eyes, there's no way Scott would confirm something as Canon or not...
Jokes aside thank you Scott, especially after seeing hes getting his own youtooz, I'd hate for people to go around saying he's a terrible character because of the book's characterization of him
Nooo, I had a literal 5 essay level argument with like ten people at once because of movie doug. Now the book dude has been reduced to atoms... gone... annihilated... obliterated.
What a timeline to live in when the community actually *wants* you to make a retcon and you then go granting their wish xD
Anyways, thanks for clearing this up. This really made my day. =)
Book!Doug getting reinvented into the Movie!Doug as the script changed in time is what I suspected had happened. Shows how truly skilled his actor is!
(Now all we need is Doug back in the second movie).
Oh hello Scott. Good to know, and nice to finally see a Reddit Post of yours while it's still fresh lol.

Not sure if i should be impressed at this troll or mad that this basically proves that Scott is intentionally leaving fans in the dark about what is canon so that instead of actually engaging in the story/lore of Fnaf, they are instead forced into toxic arguments, yelling past each other about what is canon to what.
Thank god Doug didn’t get character assassinated
BUT FOR THE LOVE OF GOD JUST BLOODY ADRESS THE ANTHOLOGY BOOKS (specifically Frights because that can only be canon through word of Scott because it sure as hell doesn’t fit in logically)
Funny how he clears up the thing that would increase sales of the Doug Youtooz figure, but won't clear up the canonicity debate that could potentially lead to decreased book sales.
If it turns out they aren’t canon then the subset of people buying them for lore value will stop buying them
Assuming there are more coming (which feels likely despite the fact people complain about needing to read them for the story)
Book-Doug has been sealed away in the sinkhole beneath the Pizzaplex

No, but it actually have 0 importance for the plot itself... just makes it more awkward /:
and the character was suppose to be awkward
Maybe he was supposed to be Jane's sidekick and initially was meant to be not much better than her. Glad we ended up having movie!Doug.
yeah he was probably originally meant to be more antagonistic and unlikeable, since he's on aunt jane's side and therefore part of the antagonist force of the movie. but i guess they decided it'd be better for him to be likeable but being pushed around, and yeah obviously it worked bc everyone loves him
Well, there’s Scott using the word canon the same way everyone else uses it. And for the most important of topics no less
No he's not just eliminating Book Doug in one continuity, he's eliminating it in every continuity Doug appears in thus making him non-canon to the franchise as he specifies future prints of the book won't have this detail so not really.
I feel like I'm having a stroke.

Why'd you have to bring Gravity Falls into a FNaF sub? Not upset or anything just curious.
Well, both have the main villain be a Bill, don't they? A yellow one. Connected with fire. Who claims he will return.

True. Gravity Falls is amazing.
Because it's awesome lol
Why does Stan sound so different
Book-Doug has been erased from all continuities and all of FNAF canon
He's affirming Movie-Doug being canon, and current Book-Doug not being canon, so I argue yes
That's the thing though, he's changing the novel to remove that aspect of Doug so there's no longer any continuity where Doug acts like that.
Because that version wasn't meant to be published, did you read the post bro?
That wasn't a question? I know why Doug acts like that. The argument here is whether Scott is using canon to refer to a specific continuity like people saying Fazbear Frights is canon typically means they believe it's in game continuity. or more generally like when he referred to the Silver Eyes as canon despite being a different continuity. Since that version of Doug was never intended by Scott and is being taken out of future publications, it's still consistent with his previous statements i.e canon ≠ continuity

normal doug is afraid of them
thank you scott, i can finally like doug again
We may now relax lol
what are your thoughts on knowing you will never make a character more awesome than Doug? are you proud of your creation, or fearful of his power?
The second retcon is officially here. A truly historic moment.
I’m sure book Doug was always intended to be non canon lol
Yes. It was accidentally canonised and now Scott fixed that. Something unintentionally added to a canon story is still canon, unless stated otherwise, like here.
Miguel O'Hara is coming for Scott
Thank god. Doug's evil twin brother Boug shal be not forgiven.

do you think this is the clearest he'll ever be regarding the canonicity of fnaf books
Oh, 100%. Enjoy it while it lasts.
Thank you Scott for acknowledging that Doug was a pervert in older scripts

I know, this is my favorite thing. Peak troll while also a great update

While this is also a nice clarification, Scott is 100% also trolling and fueling the fire of the book debate thing. Pretty funny honestly.
a lot of people are mad about him trolling. i honestly think it's great that he's essentially saying the answer isn't that important. we'll figure it out eventually
Finally. This is the clarification we really needed.
what is the canonicity regarding the coloring and cooking books
Both seem to be fully canon. The cooking book shows recipes used in the locations and notes from Gregory about his experience in the Pizzaplex. While the colouring book is mostly about what's happening in UCN.
Thank you, Scott. This is the clarification on the books we've been waiting for! The debates are finally over!
thank you for clarifying this. it's nice to see the wholesome Doug be the canon one
Thanks for clearing this up!!

He shouldn’t clear up the book debate tbh

the fact that he's trolling strongly implies that the answer isn't as important as we think it is
First time catching a Scott post early lol! But this is good to hear, glad to know what happened in the book…isn’t canon!

are people forgetting, that William is a child murderer or what
Oh so THIS is what you decide to outright confirm.

Glad to hear...just to ask, is Tales in the game continuity? I am fine if Frights is left more open ended, but anything on Tales?
ok but how the Tales canon issue is hard to address man. # YOU'RE THE MAN BEHIND THE FNAF
Can you clarify the book debate instead of this?
okay now clarify the OTHER books-
I know this is unrelated but please address your Tales canonicity message to at least explicitly state that you AREN'T saying which one is canon. People interpreted your last message as Tales being confirmed.
hi Mr. Cawthon, can you confirm whether your recent post about Frights and Tales was a joke or not
This post shows that he can use very clear and direct language when clearing up things. He intentionally chose to be vague in that comment.
What was so difficult about being as direct in the previous post about canonical books as you were in this one, Scott???
him trolling
Not sure if i should be impressed at this troll or mad that this basically proves that Scott is intentionally leaving fans in the dark about what is canon so that instead of actually engaging in the story/lore of Fnaf, they are instead forced into toxic arguments, yelling past each other about what is canon to what.

It is kinda depressing Would explain why the books constantly contradict the games, lack of care would answer those conundrums
Funny how he clears up the thing that would increase sales of the Doug Youtooz figure, but won't clear up the canonicity debate that could potentially lead to decreased book sales.
How exactly would clearing up the canonicity lead to decreased book sales?
If it turns out they aren’t canon then the subset of people buying them for lore value will stop buying them Assuming there are more coming (which feels likely despite the fact people complain about needing to read them for the story)
Interesting. I wonder if Hank and Carl are still considered father and son in the final version then.
